USB ports don't work after resuming from standby with Windows 8 on X230 tablet

I have just done a clean install of Windows 8 on my X230 tablet.  Before installing Windows 8 I installed the most recent BIOS for this machine (version 2.50).  After installing Windows 8 I installed System Update from the Lenovo Website and downloaded all the recommended drivers and other files.  I've also installed all the latest Windows 8 updates.
Here are the symptoms of my problem: After resuming from standby/sleep mode, my USB ports do not work.  My computer has two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 ports.  All exhibit the same behavior.  After resuming from standby mode I have tried inserting both my mouse and a USB thumbdrive, but neither are recognized.  After restarting Windows, the USB ports work again... until I resume from standby mode again.
I hope there is a solution to this issue.  It is very frustrating.

Thanks for the suggestion about tweaking the "Allow this computer to turn off this device" feature.  I un-checked that box for every entry I could find under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in the Devide Manager.  Unfortunately, the same symptoms of my problem persisted.
I went back and looked at the README file associated with the BIOS 2.50 download on Lenvo's support site.  At the bottom of the file it gives a "Summary of Changes".  Under version 2.03 of the BIOS (the version just before version 2.50), it says:
- (Fix) Fixed an issue where USB device might not detected when system resume from sleep mode.
This indicates that Lenovo support was already aware of such issues.  The problem was intended to be fixed in version 2.03 of the BIOS.  However, the issue persists on my machine, even with the latest BIOS.
Hopefully someone from Lenovo can comment here.

  • USB Ports don't work after sleep mode on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

I have been using my laptop for about a month without a problem, but over the last week or two I have had a problem where I lose access to all of my USB ports when resuming from sleep mode. If I go into hybernate or restart the computer, the ports
miraculously return. The techs at the manufacturer can't figure it out and wanted me to do a full system restore, which is a little too drastic a solution! The only real thing I can connect it to, is I had to use Virtual PC (XP) around the time this
    started.

    Hi Greg,
Microsoft has been fixed this problem, but it is not successful with all PC/Notebook manufacturers. So, the OEM developers itself started giving patch for this issue. I have seen the patch upto Windows Vista version. Lenovo, HP, Dell and other people
are providing this patch. Sony is providing this patch for some selective models. Go to sony support, enter or auto detect your model and check for the update. With Windows 7 SP1 your USB drives should work properly.
Anyway, check the below sony support link to understand how to wake up a USB drive after sleep in Vista, Do the equivalent modification in your Windows 7 PC registry. It will work for you.

  • After update to OS X 10.7.5 on my Mac Pro (2009) USB ports don't work at all after wake up from sleep mode; with 10.7.4 there was (nearly) any problem.

    hello,
after update to OS X 10.7.5 on my Mac Pro (2009) USB ports don't work at all after wake up from sleep mode; with 10.7.4 there was (nearly) any problem.
the used ports appear to be "killed"; the unused USB ports seem to work, but the Mac works in slow-motion.
The only "solution" is to restart my Mac.
    - SMC-reset, PRAM-reset or repairing user rights had no positive effect; what is the solution - a bug-fix-update???

I have a mac mini (A1283) with OS 10.7.4. Upon upgrading to 10.7.5 it did not start up again. Instead, the light was on and the hard drive did not start up. The light on the connected USB mouse was not lit.
    My solution:
    Cold start with Command-v pressed.
This should start Verbose mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492 ).
What happened on my mac mini was that the grey startup screen with the Apple logo appeared for a long while before the login screen came.
Maybe Cmd-v set open firmware params and fixed some corruption.
Anyway: my mac mini works again.

    HELP ME
My usb ports work fine until Sunday, I restart the W8 OS and they don't work (my last activity was configure a router but I didn't install anything). I've two OS (W8 and Ubuntu 11.1) and I tried all and my USB ports don't work. I don't have any idea about the cause of the problem. All work fine except my USB ports. They are enable according to the BIOS but the OS (W8, W7 or Ubuntu) doesn't recognize any device.
    I tried this things:
    - Change my porwer supply
    - Restart the BIOS to the Fail-Safe and Optimal value default
    - Clear the CMOS (Changing the jumper and remove the battery)
    - Remove the W8 and install W7
    - Remove W7 and install Ubuntu 11.04
    - Flash the BIOS to the last update (it's the same that was loaded in the BIOS)
Currently, I don't know what I must do it. I'm really disappointed with this board (MSI 880GMS-E35). This is my second problem with these model. Previously, I've one and it didn't supply the energy to start the proccesor (Phenon X4 955). My actual board works fine until Sunday.
Please help me to solve the problem.

OK, I have no idea but fortunately my usb ports work fine now.
I don't know how to fix the problem. But I can assure that thanks to Ubuntu it's fixed. My last two operations were:
    - Flash the BIOS
    - Check lsusb
Yesterday, I'm full disappointed and I was going to prepare my hard discussion with my provider when suddenly I found a this post:
    http://askubuntu.com/questions/69594/my-usb-ports-randomly-stop-working-till-a-reboot
But before to enter the command in the Ubuntu's console, I saw that my USB devices work. It's amazing!!! I'm a newer electronic engineer and I saw events similar that this more than once time in my labs (Typical student experiences).
If anyone has the same problem, I could recommend:
    - Check BIOS usb options
If these are ok, else enable the propertly options
    - Check # lsusb (In Linux)
If your ports don't appear check the PSU (Maybe there are others things that you should check) else
    - Check # dmesg | tail (Before and after to connect a usb device)
If there is an error saw in forums, maybe it's the common problem so far (Incompatibility in the kernel -error hci-)
    - Type # acpi = force irqpoll
    ELSE
    - Flash the bios as show in this forum
ACLARATION: I think that this algorithm might help you but I don't prove this. It's your responsible to do that. I only write the items that I learn with this issue.
CONCLUSION: I don't wish that anyone has this problem. I lost one week trying to solve it.

  • My Toshiba Satellite A660 USB ports don't work and the webcam doesn't either.

For some odd reason all my USB ports doesn't work. It worked fine with I got it and this laptop is pretty much new. I also tried to uninstall and install the USB device back but I always get an error saying it didn't work. Any solutions to fix this?
Also, my webcam doesn't work. Every time I log into my laptop I always get this error saying "Web camera initialization failed. Please check your camera device and restart application or computer." I have no idea how to fix this. Can anyone help me out please?

For your USB ports, try this one first..
    1. Make sure that the power light is off.
    2. Unplug you AC adapter form your laptop then remove the battery.
    3. Without those two, hold down the power button for 10 seconds then release it. After that put the battery and the AC adapter in.
    4. Turn NB on and just choose start windows normally.
This is the simplest thing that you can do. Basically, the reason behind this is because it will reset the microprocessor on your system board. Try this first then if it failed check these links:
USB port may stop working after you remove or insert a USB device
Tips for solving problems with USB devices
For your webcam, you said it is giving out a message "Web camera initialization failed. Please check your camera device and restart application or computer.", that means the application is not installed properly. You only need to uninstall it first from Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features (make sure that view should be in large icons) then look for the Web Camera Application (looking at your laptop model I assume it's Toshiba Camera Application) then uninstall it. To reinstall it back, pull up the Toshiba Application Installer by going to Start then type in Toshiba Application Installer. Once you got it pulled up, click on Next Button and look for the application that has a name webcamera from the list and install it.

  • Windows 8 won't find any airport after resuming from standby

    Hi,
I have had a windows 7 PC with both airport express (2nd and 3rd generation) working flawlessly. I bought a new Windows 8 Laptop. Initially everything worked fine, but after resuming from standby mode (closed the display and reopened) my itunes stopped working, and the airport utility software was unable to find both airport express. After shutdown and restart they both worked again until the next standby mode.
I've read somewhere that it might be a conflict with IPv6 so I disabled it from registry, but the problem remains.....
    any thoughts
    Regards,
    German

Did you upgrade the drivers from the wireless card manufacturer in win8 machine.. ??
If that doesn't work.. do some more basic wireless investigation..
    1. Are wireless names SMB compliant.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric?
    2. WPA2 Personal security with a password which also conforms to the above.
    3. Test with fixed wireless channels. 11, 6, 1
    4. If none of the above work.. turn off security for a few minutes and see if that works.

  • Touchpad permanently not working after resuming from suspend

I lost touchpad and trackpoint functionality after resuming from suspend on my ThinkPad E530 (3259CTO).
Even after a complete power off (with the battery removed), the touchpad is detected but doesn't send any event, and the trackpoint is not detected.
In Windows, in the UltraNav control panel, the touchpad is marked as enabled and cannot be disabled, the trackpoint is grayed.
In Linux, I can see the difference is kernel traces when the driver is loaded.

After looking at https://gerrit.chromium.org/gerrit/#/c/31105/ and Synaptics public documentation, I was able to get more information : the device status register (F01_RMI_Data0) is 0x45, which means the touchpad is in flash programming mode since there is a firmware CRC failure.
It looks like http://code.google.com/p/chromium-os/issues/detail?id=24298, so it's probably not a Lenovo specific problem, but a bug in Synaptics firmware.
Can Lenovo provide the firmware to flash like http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-Touchpad-jumpy-response-when-used-with-90... which would hopefully make my touchpad working again ?
The original firmware should work, but an updated one would be better, if it avoids losing the touchpad again later.

I don't know why, but this made me think of the episode of the simpsons when home tries to get over 300 pounds so he can work from home.  When he tries to dial the phone he hist all the buttons and gets a recording that says "We're sorry, you're fingers are too fat. To obtain a special dialing wand, please mash the keypad now."
BTW, sorry I can't help... but at least I am entertained easily.

  • T420 USB Ports do not work after installing XP

Hello my office has  been using Lenovo's for some time now but we recently purchased a T420 and installed Windows XP SP3 on it.  The issue we are having is that the uSB ports do not work.  I have tried every driver I can find but still no luck, can anyone help?

    hey chris0277,
could you check in Device Manager and see if there is any ? or ! symbol on the USB area.
If there is, i do recommend uninstalling the drivers from it and then visit http://support.lenovo.com and update your unit

  • Cd/dvd burner and usb ports don't work with itunes

I got a 7th_generation_ipod_nano for Christmas and when I downloaded itunes I discovered my cd/dvd device disappeared and my usb ports no longer worked.  I tried a fix and that failed so did a system recovery to the time prior to my itunes download. My ports and cd/dvd worked normally.  I then re-downloaded itunes and again the ports and cd/dvd failed and again I did a system recovery and again they worked normally.  Anyone got a clue?  I noticed I am not the only onw with this problem and am wondering if its a bug in the new download.  Any help most appreciated.  Thanks!

I discovered the answer to my own problem and anyone else out there who needs it here it is:  If you have itunes installed on your computer and cd/dvd device is not working do a system restore to a time prior to the dl of itunes.  Check to make sure your cd/dvd works again.  If it does, then all you need to do is make sure your ipod is NOT connected to your computer while you download itunes again.  Should fix the problem.

  • 35% CPU after resume from Standby

After comming out of standby, CPU runs at 35% busy for a long time (30 minutes or more). Reboot and CPU is 2%. Is there a reason why resuming from Standby is crippling the system. The CPU time is in a SYSTEM process with no other information (Task Manager) and just runs and runs and runs.  The system is 4 days old and I have not made changes to the BIOS settings.

Thanks for the reply but the solution related to a docking station problem and I do not have a docking station. But the problem has gone away. Why? I do not know. That is actually more distressing because there was no cause to link the problem to. So who knows when it will just start again. I did change the power options to not hibernate but then changed them back. The change seems to have made the problem go away. Turn it off then back on and it runs differently. Not very comforting.

  • USB Mouse / Keyboard doesn't work after resuming from hibernate

I am using a USB device that splits out to 2 PS2 ports, one for a mouse, one for a keyboard. It works great, but when I put my X61 into hibernate, the mouse and keyboard do not work when I resume from hibernate.
I installed all the relevant patches and power manager drivers from the driver downloads page, but my mouse still doesn't work.
Can someone point me to the correct download or shed some light on this?
    Thank you!

I have this same problem with this same device. It is a "composite USB device".
What I've notice is that the problem happens mostly with USB 1.1 ports. When the device is connected to a USB 2.0 port the problem doesn't happen always.
It depends on the computer though. I added a PCMCIA USB 2.0 adaptor to my laptop that has USB 1.1 only. And when I connect the USB-to-PS/2 cable to the USB 2.0 my mouse sometimes work after suspend/hibernate but sometimes doesn't.
However, on my other desktop computer, which has integrated USB 2.0 ports, this problem has never happened (I haven't tested it exhaustively though).
This is a Windows bug of course. Everything related to USB 1.1 support is buggy in Windows. One more example is the annoying (and possibly catastrophic) "Delayed write error" that appears when you use a external hard drive plugged to a USB 1.1 port.
I guess M$ is focusing their efforts on making USB 2.0 to work well and they have forgotten about USB 1.1. Or it could a problem related to "USB composite devices", hard to know.

  • Since upgrading to Lion 10.7.3 my USB ports don't work for anything. Any ideas?

I have been a long-term (nearly 25 years) Apple User, so am reasonably familiar with the system. I upgraded about 1 week ago with an automatic update to Lion and since then I have had massive problems using the USB ports on my Mac Pro (which is from 2009). At first this affected every USB port and I couldn't use my keyboard or mouse, but since restarting a couple of times, and repeatedly inserting and removing them into the various rear ports, I can use these plugged in via monitor cable.
However, the USB ports for other devices are extremely problematic and frustrating as nothing seems to work consistently on them. This affects all devices that I usually access (and which all worked seamlessly before upgrade), including my iPhone (which will power up but not be recognized when plugged into any front or rear port), external drives, cameras, and my printer. However, for the printer only (a Brother MFC 9840) it will work some times if I restart the computer, but not others. I have tried rebooting, switching ports, using other cables, changing power cords. I have read multiple threads on USB issues with Lion for a solution including those to do with printers (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3301218?start=0&tstart=0), those to do with external drives (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3510032?start=30&tstart=0), and even those to to with modems (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3164614?start=0&tstart=0). Despite this, I note that there appear to be no consistent solutions reported and that in other support threads including reseting PRAM. I do see many more problems than I would have expected.
I don't know if this is related, but after the upgrade I also had problems with Outlook not working, but for some reason that seemed to stop after a couple of days. Just in case I also checked to see if I was affected by the malware program (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3856206?tstart=30), but thankfully I am not.
I am sure this has to do with the upgrade to Lion 10.7.3, and have been expecting something from Apple to address these issues, but nothing so far. I am completely lost for solutions, and any help gratefully received.
Slightly unrelated, but again speaking to a possible change in culture in Apple that has seen upgrades cause more problems than they solve, I am also affected by the change from MobileMe to iCloud and the loss of push e-mail. For those not aware, this has been an issue for more than 6 months, and on the discussion there are now 35 pages of comments, and no solution in sight (https://discussions.apple.com/message/18050375?ac_cid=142432#18050375).

Generally speaking, a full recharge and reboot after the recharge will solve the issue with the ports.  Many ports will also start to fail if you leave devices hooked up to them when the machine is asleep.  Unfortunately, many non-Apple devices don't understand the low power mode ports go into after Energy Saver is woken up, and only a reboot solves that problem.

  • DVI to ADC Adapter + Mini DVI to DVI Adapter = usb ports don't work?

I have a 23" Cinema with the ADC plug. I've been using it with the DVI to ADC adapter for many years, though I did not use any of the monitor's usb ports during this time. I recently bought a new Macbook, so now I have am combining a Mini DVI to DVI adapter with the DVI to ADC adapter. The display works fine, but now I find the usb ports on the monitor do not work. I've checked all the pins involved and they are all straight and look normal.
Does this have anything to do with the double adapter situation, or could it just be that the monitor's usb ports are aging and haven't been used in a long time? Or is it possible these ports do not support usb 2.0 devices?

    Thank you Malcolm.
It's true I cannot adjust the display's brightness using the buttons on the monitor. But I can put the Macbook to sleep, both when the adapter's usb cable is plugged in and when it's not.
So if the usb circuitry has gone bad, will this cause me any other problems, or can I just ignore it? Right now I am trying to choose an external hard drive to buy, so I'm taking stock of my available ports. I don't think I'd put a big hard drive on a usb 1.1 port anyways.
