USB Ports not working with specific devices

So this one has me scratching my head. My USB ports on the back of my iMac are working except for a few devices. 1 being a logitech USB receiver, and 1 being a usb mp3 player. When I plug the received into the iMac the keyboard won't work, but when I plug my USB hub into the same USB port and the receiver into the hub it works fine. The mp3 player isn't working in any usb/hub (so that's a mook point).
Here's what I've tried to resolve this issue:
1. Reset iMac
2. Reset PRAM
3. Try every usb port on the back of the iMac
None of these have fixed my issue. Plugging it into the hub isn't a huge deal, but I'd like the option to use my USB ports as I wish without having to deal with this. Anyone have advice on a solution?

It is not a matter of using your USB ports as you wish, it is a matter of what you are plugging into them and the power demands that what you plug into them makes on the system.
Not all USB ports or devices are created equal. How many ports are you using? What exactly are you plugging into the ports? What is the power demand of each item that you are plugging into each port? Are any of the USB devices self powered from their own separate power supply? Are all of the devices dependent upon the iMac for power?
It sounds to me that you have too many high power devices demanding more power through the ports than the iMac can accommodate. Is the USB hub self powered? If so, that is probably why it resolves your issue with the Logitech Unified receiver. There is very little info on this device on the Logitech website, so I could not ascertain its power demands.

  • One of USB ports not working with wireless mouse USB receiver (MBP mid-2009

    Hi,
I've got a weird problem with one of the USB ports (the one next to SD card slot). I use a Logitech VX Nano (wireless) mouse.
When I plug the usb receiver to the USB port, no device can be detected. But when trying the other USB port, all works fine.
I also tried using a usb extension cable with the USB port (problematic one). All works fine again.
The same happens with windows xp pro.
    Any help appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Alex

  • Acer C710 - USB Ports not working with patched kernel

    I have an...
    Acer C710-844G01ii
I have replaced the original SSD with a Mushkin 120GB SSD (MKNSSDCR120GB-7)
I've used John Lewis' script at https://johnlewis.ie to flash the firmware. It works great. It loads 64 bit dual arch iso (2014.10.01) written to a USB flashdrive (Well, I'm actually using SD card in a USB reader. Not sure if that makes a difference) without having to utilize the workaround listed on the Chromebook wiki page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … stallation). I just create a regular arch bootable usb and it seems to work fine. I can use the bootable USB tools. I can install arch to the hard disk fine. (I did this a couple of times on the original SSD that came with the chromebook before I replaced it, so I know it works without having to change the SSD).
The problem I'm having occurs after I install the patched kernel (linux-chromebook-3.16.4-1-x86_64 or linux-mainline-chromebook-3.17-1-x86_64 I've tried them both. Both times I wiped the hard drive and went through the entire install process from scratch). After booting, everything loads up fine except that I lose functionality of my USB ports. The custom BIOS still reads the arch bootable USB if I choose to boot into it. If I boot from the hard drive though, as soon as the patched kernel loads, the USB ports are not working.
    The output of
    dmesg | tail
is the same before and after inserting a flash drive into a usb port.
    Running the command
    lsusb
    gives output
    unable to initialize libusb: -99

Updated the system, now using arch kernel 3.17.1-1
    Problem still exists.

    Hi,
What about if you try to install drivers from your product's page?
    http://uk.msi.com/support/mb/Z97-GAMING-5.html#down-driver
And when exactly it starts to fail to work? Did you try to have OS just installed, restart it and see if it works then? Are you able to determine which driver installation causes USBs to stop working?
    thank you
i just remove USB3 controller driver and work
    thank you all :D

  • Touchsmart TX-2 fingerprint scanner and USB ports not working

    Hi everyone,
Please forgive me if this is in the wrong spot.
Just sent my laptop (Touchsmart TX-2 1015au) off for a warranty fix - told them the USB ports weren't working on Windows 7, 64 bit. It came back wiped, running on Vista 32 bit and.....with the USB ports not working.
I figured I'd try to get it working because I need my laptop for uni and can't send it back right now. So I clean installed Windows 7, 64 bit again and its still not working. Did the standard open device manager and uninstall everything under the usb tab. All that has resulted in is causing the fingerprint scanner to stop working (being told that it is not connected) and still no working USB ports.
All advice really welcome and very much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

    Hi:
Should be no problem to get W7 32 bit to work on that model.
Just use all of the drivers and software from the HP Probook 450 G0 on your model except the Audio, BIOS and firmware files.
Your model uses the Intel HD graphics driver only.
The first driver you have to install is the Intel chipset installation utility and then reboot.
    http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/swdHome/?cc=us&lang=en&sp4ts.oid=5359407&ac.ad...
Audio:  Accept the agreement.  Download and install the first driver on the list.

If for some reason, the Intel HD graphics driver from that model does not work, then use this one...

  • USB ports only work when the device is connected at start up

    I have a dv5-1110em laptop which I have upgraded to Windows 7.
If i connect a USB device before I start the machine then it works fine as long as I do not unplug it.
If I unplug a device and then need to use it again I have to restart the laptop.
If there are no devices plugged in at start then the ports will not work with any device.
I have installed the new BIOS.
I have uninstalled the USB ports and then re installed them.
I have been searching for an answer to this for months and found nothing that solves my problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem.  Installed windows 7 professional over windows 7 home preminu.
Only see USB device if it's plugged in at startup.

  • Email settings DO NOT WORK WITH iOS Devices

Vz keeps sending these "important" instructions for email port settings, BUT they do not work with iOS devices--iPhones and iPads. Last go around with this I spent over 16 hours trying to reconcile until an Apple Expert discovered "special" instructions for iOS device settings. Get with the program, Verizon.

So what are the special instructions?

  • Split x2 problem with USB ports not working

My computer is somewhat new and this problem has been happening since I first got it.  I couldn't find anything about this problem here or elsewhere online.
When I plug anything into either USB port (I've tried my phone and an external harddrive) the computer like sort of recognizes it on and off.  When I plug in my phone the computer beeps at random every several seconds and doesn't recognize it.  The external hard drive was sort of recognized but only on and off and I couldn't move things from it to my computer because it wouldn't stay connected long enough.  It's literally like every 2-3 seconds it recognizes the USB thing, changes it's mind and then recognizes it again, etc. forever.
I haven't had a chance to test the SD card slot or the HDMI port yet.
Sometimes the mouse freezes also, I'm not sure if this is the same problem (related to connection between the tablet and the keyboard parts) or if these are separate problems.  It seems to be happening less often and goes away if I wait for a moment.  Still annoying but the USB ports not functioning is a more urgent issue.
I need help, is there a way to fix this or is something faulty with my computer?

  • Usb port not compatable with windows 8

I have a usb port to download  called, CareLink for Medtronic, that will not work with windows 8. What can I do ? I really need this for my husband to use with his insulin pump. The company is waiting on approval from FDA to get approved for windows 8.

Do you mean it is a device that plugs into one of the usb ports of the computer? And there is no driver for Windows 8?
Here is a page I found showing how to download drivers for Windows 7 and Vista. In the vast majority of cases Windows 7 drivers will work with Windows 8 as long as the driver install program is set to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode.
    http://carelink.minimed.com/html/en/US/help/index.html?v477122.htm
Try running the installation in Windows 8. It will likely fail but do not despair. Note where the installation files have been unzipped onto the hard drive. Go into the file where the installation software has been stored. It is likely in a folder in the program files. Open the folder and look for an installation program (.exe). It is likely called setup.exe. Right click on it and choose properties and then compatibility and set the compatibility to Windows 7. You might also need to set it to run as administrator. Once you have it set that way, try running it again by just double clicking setup.exe.
This link also claims to have Windows 8 drivers:

    Post back with any questions.

  • G580 (2189) USB Ports not working

    Hello,
I have an ongoing problem (for 2 months, before I had no problem at all) with all 3 USB ports on my G580. None of them are working properly, if I plug in a device they do not recognise it, however, the devices get power, e.g. I can charge my mobile phone through USB port but it does not recognise it. The most irritating part is that also my opctical mouse does not work.
I have tried a couple of solutions like:
    - restarted the computer
    - uninstalled the USB root hub, devices etc
    - disabled the above mentioned ones
    - ultimately I refreshed the OS (I have 64 bit Win 8.1) but the problem still occurs.
    I attached a picture.
Thank you for your help in advance.
    Balázs

    hi Balázs,
Just to check, was this G580 (2189) originally running on Windows 7 as indicated in this pdf datasheet? If yes, were the USB ports working fine before you upgraded to Windows 8.1?
If the USB ports were working fine before the upgrade then it's likely that this is an OS issue as discussed in this microsoft blog.
    Things that you can try:
    1. Run Windows Update to get the latest patch and bug fixes for the OS.
    2. Check this microsoft blog on "What to Try When Your USB Device is an "Unknown Device"
    3. Check this microsoft blog on how to apply a registry workaround.
Hope you get the issue sorted out.

  • Thinkpad 433835U Docking Station W520 - USB Ports Not Working

I have recently purchased the 433835U Docking Station and have the same issue in which when I have my W520 docked, NONE of the USB ports work at all. In Device Manager, I have an Unknown Device with the Hardware Ids of:
    USB\VID_17EF&PID_100A&REV_0000 and USB\VID_17EF&PID_100A.
Yesterday I had a technician come on-site and replace the motherboard on my W520 and I am having the same results. I am also the owner of a Lenovo T410s and when using the same 433835U Dock, all of the USB ports work as expected, so it can not be a problem with the docking station.
I have called Lenovo Technical Support for the past two days and was told that there could be a compatibility issue with the W520 and this dock and I can not find the proper driver for the Unknown Device Hardware Ids listed above.
Do the USB port on this 433835U Docking Station work at all for anyone else with a W520?
Can anyone provide and insight as to resolve this Unknown Device issue?  I am thinking about purchasing the 433830U Docking Station to see if it might work.
    Thanks much in advance

I have the 433830U dock and the USB ports all work fine with my W520.
