USB to DVI devices cause dual and triple monitors to flicker

Hello everyone!
I have two T500's which are on a Lenovo docking station, using 3 external monitors.   One monitor is using the port on the docking station, which is a digital port, thus using the ATI video card within the Thinkpad.  The other two monitors are using the Lenovo USB to DVI devices to have 3 external digital monitors total.    Recently, for no reason that I can see, after the laptop is docked and booted up, once all items on the taskbar load, the usb to dvi icon on the taskbar starts to "circle" and then all 3 monitors take turns flickering, redrawing icons, etc.  It will eventually stop on it's own, but it is frustrating to wait for it to finish.  I see no evidence of anything in the eventvwr.  I have updated the BIOS, the ATI drivers and used the latest usb to dvi drivers to no avail.  I have turned hardware acceleration off on the one monitor that is running from the docking station, but it does not affect it.  Turning off hardware acceleration on the usb to dvi causes them to not function at all.   Any light that you can shed on this will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Lisa

Thanks for the help but I think I will stick with Xmonad and Xinerama as it work perfectly. I just will not be able to use a different window manager with composite, oh well I do not like extra bloat anyway. I already have 2 powerful video cards and there is no need to spend another $200 on an adapter.

  • Connecting some USB 3.0 devices interrupts charging and wifi

I have a very strange issue:
when connecting my USB 3.0 hard drive (3,5" with its own power supply) or my USB 3.0 hub (also own power supply) to my 2013 Macbook Air the charger will stop charging for a brief moment. The red or green light on the connector will go off and back on after about one second. This is not very annoying during normal use, but when connected to a external monitor, the latter will also switch off. On the other hand, smaller things like my USB 3.0 USB stick or my 2,5" USB 3.0 harddrive do not have this problem. Is this somewhat related to the external power supply of the hub and hard drive?
Another problem I have: When the hub is connected, wifi will stop working completely. I suspect the USB cable, which was quite cheap and is very thin. (Google says that a bad USB 3.0 cables radiate in the same 2,4 GHZ frequency as Wifi), however this only happens on the left USB port. All of this has been driving me crazy. Thanks for reading!

  • Can using USB 3.0 cable for a usb 2.0 device cause damage?

First off, before you tell me to look elsewhere (since I'm sure many have posted on USB 3.0 recently) Hear me out.   I have read the backwords compatibility rules for USB 3.0.  My understanding is that I can use a 2.0 cord on 3.0 device (it fits) but not a cord on a 2.0 device.  It don't fit...TOO MANY PINS.
    Well so I thought.
    My question:
I bought a new External HD that had a USB 3.0 port and came with 3.0 cables.  I plugged these cables into my Mid 2009 Macbook Pro and it worked perfectly.  Transfered files and everything. Knowing the rules on USB 3.0, I am worried this could damage the device, port, or cable.  Any advice?  Thanks guys (and gals)!
For clarification: the HD is 3.0 usb,  the cable is 3.0 usb, but the computer port is 2.0 usb.
Thanks very much for any help you can give!
    Ethan

As long as you don't force the connectors in, there won't be any issue other than your wait for the 2.0 bottleneck.

  • Macbook Pro -- DUAL or TRIPLE MONITORS

I have a macbook pro laptop
Can I set up my system so my primary monitor is in landscape mode while the secondary displays in portrait mode? That would be very usefull for me.
If the screen is closed.. then dual monitor is fine..

AFAIK, you can rotate any display connected to the couputer as long as the video card supports display rotation (which includes all current Macs running 10.4.whatever). Each display you connect will represented by an icon in Display prefs. However, I don't see how you would connect more than one external display to a laptop that only has one external display port. I don't think there are any ExpressCard 34 DVI video cards that could be used to add another display so I would say that you are limited to one external display (I could be wrong on this but if such a device exists, I an not aware of it). If it were possible to connect more than one external, you should be able to rotate the display just like any other.

  • USB Devices Not Detected and High CPU Usage

Hello, I'm using arch on a Dell 1720 laptop.
I have some weird issues involving detection of USB devices.
When the laptop is on battery and I plug in a USB mouse the power flickers on and flickers off again; nothing in the logs/dmesg.
If I then connect the AC adapter the reconnect the mouse, the same happens, except the CPU usage hits 87%+ on one core.
    Running
    sudo rmmod ehci_hcd
solves the problem; the CPU usage drops and the mouse gets detected.
Subsequent attempts to hotplug USB devices does nothing, no high CPU and no Power.
Rebooting the computer is the only way to use USB devices at the moment.
    usb-autosuspend is disabled in laptop-mode.
    uname -a:
    Linux MatSalleh 2.6.39-ck #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Jun 5 18:30:30 EDT 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
The same happens with the stock kernel too
    My kernel line in grub:
    kernel /vmlinuz26-ck root=/dev/sda3 elevator=bfq ro resume=/dev/sda2
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Chris.

I highly doubt it's that, it was working fine on ubuntu just days before...
tydell wrote:I had similar problem with USB pendrive, it wasn't detected and it makes high cpu usage. It was problem with ehci_hcd module
This one helps me to solve this problem
My USB devices don't even get detected, so that script won't work.
Last night I hibernated my computer after not using any USB devices, on resume, my CPU usage was 100%, removing the ehci_hcd module fixed it.
    Any more ideas?
I'm tempted to build a vanilla kernel...

  • IPod Nano: Error Message "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it"

Hi everyone, I just received 2 brand new iPod Nanos for my kids for Christmas, thought I'd be smart and sync them both now before wrapping them so I don't have to be messing around with them on the day. One synced without a problem, then using the same cable, same computer, same USB port, the 2nd one came up with "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it" I've tried restarting my computer, unplugging and reinserting the USB. Is there anthing else I can try before returning it? Thanking you for any help.

I have solved my problem, I ended up ringing Apple and got an awesome lady who told me to reset it by pressing the sleep button and menu button together for about 10 seconds and once it actually turned on for the first time the computer then recognised it, so it's all good, :-) Thank you lovely lady!

  • Plugging USB from cinema display to dual-link DVI adapter shuts-off adapter

i have a macbookpro and 30" cinema display. i had been using the $100 minidisplayport-to-duallinkDVI adapter to connect my monitor but now whenever i plug the USB from the monitor into the adapter (to use the monitor as a USB hub) it  kills the power to the monitor! does anyone know what the problem is here? it seems to have gotten worse and worse over time and now i cannot ever get it to work no matter how many times i replug things... causing my studio to be quite disconnected. does anyone have any information on this issue?

There just so much power that can be delivered to the usb buss.  You probably need a powered usb hub.

I don't think you can connect a printer since you won't have the printer drivers. I use FingerPrint from collobos.com to print to my non-AirPrint printers.

  • Itouch - USB device not recognized and Itouch now no longer works

I'm now on my 3rd Itouch since December all due to the same problem. All seemed to be going well with my 3rd replacement Itouch. Having loaded most of my cd collection into ITunes the night before I was going on holiday I synced my Itouch. Some sort of automatic download took place I think from Microsoft and suggested my drivers were being updated. Next thing I got message to restore my Itouch to factory settings. I did this and all the problems I had with my previou Itouch's started again.
When I now plug my Itouch into my laptop it says "USB device not recognized" and the Itouch will not switch on. I've done everything including reinstalling Itunes, holding down the power and home key but to no avail. Looks like I'm going to have to send my Itouch back again. I have a suspicion that a Microsoft download is corrupting the drivers. If anyone can help I would be very grateful. I really like my Itouch but the fact it keeps failing leads me to wonder if I should opt for something else.

I had success with the holding down the keys and connecting to usb and using itunes to restore firmware like they show here

  • USB device not recognized, and more!

This morning when I tried to sync m y Z22, I got "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED".  Connected the cable to every one of my USB ports, tried to sync each time but got the same message.
I shut down the PC, unplugged it, waited a few minutes, reconnected it, rebooted, and tried to sync again.  Still got "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED".
Checked Palm Support, was advised to upgrade to the current version of the software (I was using V4-something).  Downloaded and installed the upgrade.  I got an error at the end of the installation that (what I assume was my old software) had been moved to Palm OS Incompatible Apps.
I tried to sync again, same problem.  Opened the (new) software & half my data is gone.
So, I have a few problems:
1 - How do I fix this &^#$!!! USB error? and,
2 - How do I roll-back the software to my previous version to access all my data?  In Add/Remove Programs, with Updates checked, the new software is the only one there.  (Because I couldn't sync, at least the data on my Z22 is still intact.)
Someone PLEASE help, my whole LIFE is in this thing!!!
    Thanks in advance,
