Use as second monitor

Can the Ipad be used as a second monitor. Attaching it to my powerbook for business presentations and production on the go.

Wow, the iDisplay seems pretty cool. However I would imagine that the iPad wouldn't make a very functional second display. I would just spring for a second monitor and set up a second display that way. Using the iPad as your second monitor is just going have lag time as it is all wireless. Also what use is having a multi-touch device when you're using it in a way that doesn't utilize its touch capacity.

How can I use a second monitor in i movie.  I could use it under preference in imovie 9, but in the new imovie 11 i can't find any advanced  prefernces let alone how to use a second monitor

I too got the same. Both monitors went portrait. Then I unchecked the 'Mirror Display' option in the Arrangment tab of iMac display and voila. Got what I wanted.

  • Use a second monitor on a iMac G5 without iSight.

I'm wanting to use a second monitor with my iMac G5.
My iMac doesn't have Front Row or the iSight camera. It's the G5.
    I know that I need a cable that's the Mini-DVI.
But the problem is that my monitor I would like to use as a second monitor doesn't connect through S-Video, it connects through a VGA. Is there another adaptor?
    What do I need?
Pardon, if I have posted this message on the wrong area of the forum.
Any links, suggestions, ideas, or anything would be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    I know that I need a cable that's the Mini-DVI.
Actually that's wrong. You need the Mini-VGA to VGA adapter, referred to in the Apple Store as the "Apple VGA Display Adapter".
I trust that you are aware that your iMac officially only supports video mirroring, so that any external monitor you connect will show the same picture, at the same resolution, as your iMac's internal screen?
BTW, for future questions, I'd suggest you try asking in the iMac G5 area. This forum is for the new Intel-based iMac and so perhaps not the most likely place for you to get a quick and accurate response.
    Good luck.

  • Installing Leopard using my second monitor?

I'm trying to help my mother install leopard. I got her a Powerbook a while back, but in the interim her cat knocked her computer off the table and screwed up monitor (thankfully that was all!). It was too much for us to get it repaired, so I bought her a monitor keyboard and mouse to use, so now she basically has a "messy" desktop computer. (I cringe, but she loves it..).
The problem is, even when I have the second monitor set as the "main" monitor, the installer will only run on the broken laptop monitor... it does not want to run on the working monitor! I can't move the installer window or anything, and I can't see the prompts to get the installation going...
Any ideas other than getting her laptop fixed?

    Hey -
I talked to someone in an apple store, and they said it is possible if you have a second apple computer and a firewire cable. Apparently you can load an OS using Target Disk Mode (hold down the "T" key on the laptop with the broken screen during startup), and put the install DVD into the working Apple computer. If the computers are connected via Firewire cable, the hard drive for the broken screen laptop should show up as a hard drive on the working computer. Run the installer on the working computer, and just select the hard drive of the broken one as the destination drive to install on, and apparently it'll work great.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to make sure this works myself as I am back from visiting my mother and did not have a firewire cable to use while I was there.... I will try it the next time I visit, but the good news is the employee said there should be information on their site for how to Install an OS using Target disk mode, and he was somewhat right. I found this support post that should be helpful to you.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
If you could post up your results when you're done and let me know if it worked, I'd appreciate it. My mother needs a new computer in the near future anyway, but she only uses it for email and the internet so it would be much more cost effective to just keep her current laptop up to date, rather than buy her a new iMac!
    Good luck!
(P.S. I'm not sure what YOUR reasoning is behind not fixing your laptop monitor, but I did some research and you can find the necessary monitor part on eBay, and bring it in to an Apple certified shop, or chance it yourself, and according to my estimates, the cost was cut in half or more! I'm fairly tech savvy, so I would've attempted it myself, but the eBay post I found offered the screen, casing, and instructions for about $400... that's much better than the $1300 quote I got from Apple! Even if you brought it to a shop and only paid for "labor" it would still be less than if they got the part for you and marked it up.)

  • Airport doesn't work when using a second monitor

My macbook pro, purchased mid-June, is exhibiting an odd problem. When nothing is plugged into the mini-displayport, everything is fine. If I plug my external monitor in, and the display is being mirrored, whether the lid is open or not, once again, everything works perfectly. Once I switch into extended display mode however, my wireless connection drops after a few minutes and refuses to reconnect.
It is definitely not a signal issue. The second I unplug the monitor, my wireless connection returns to normal even if I don't move the computer an inch.

    Hello,
I have the exact same issue: whenever I am using my external display, my wireless connection with airport immediately stops. Same June 2009 macbook pro for me as well.
If I go down to the lowest resolution (640x480), I can get it to connect. The moment I unplug the external display, the wireless connection with airport is re-established.
This problem has been reported on the apple discussions forums by a few people. Someone mentioned that it could be electrical cross-talk between the graphics card and wireless card internally, one causing noise for the other.
Anyone have a solution? Or have the same problem?

  • Using a second monitor as the primary display with MiniDisplayPort

I've got a new iMac, but the screen seems to be straining my eyes. I'm trying things like scaling the display, lowering brightness, changing desktop layout, etc, but if all else fails...I'd like to go back to my old external monitor.
So, my question is...if I connected this monitor to the MiniDisplayPort on the iMac, could I use it as a single primary display, or would I have to use it as mirrored or secondary?

    Hi Brian,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  You can mirror the displays or make whichever display you want the primary in Extended Desktop mode.  See this article for details:
How to use multiple displays with your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019
The white bar at the top of the left blue box represents the menu bar and determines which display is your primary display. To change your primary display, click the white bar and drag and drop it on the blue box representing the display you would prefer to be your primary display.
    Cheers,

  • How to use second monitor as extended monitor

Want to use a second monitor at MacbookAir 11. I get the mirror to work and I know resolution is unfortunately not the same, but I wanted to use the two as one extended monitor. I cannot move or extend any window to cover both. Any advises how to get to that?

You should be able to drag the application off the right side of your monitor and it appear on the TV.  You can size and position as desired.
Check System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab  for the placement of the external monitor.  It normally defaults to the right side but could be above/below or left of your primary.

  • How to use a secondary monitor in Portrait mode

Finally discovered how to do this.  Here is how to use a second monitor in portrait mode:
Open System Preferences from your iMac dock.
Click Displays - Click Arrangement - Click Gather Windows - the secondary monitor dialog box opens.
Click Rotation - Click 90 degrees rotation for PORTRAIT MODE.
Click CONFIRM on the secondary monitor to keep Portrait mode.
    Select the desired resolution. I chose 1200 x 1920.
You'll see a dialog box that says, "About to change the display mode."
    Click OKAY.
Click Confirm. (If it appears. For some resolutions, I did not have to click confirm, most likely because the monitor supports those resolutions.)
Then resize the windows of the software you're using.
    Done!

I too got the same. Both monitors went portrait. Then I unchecked the 'Mirror Display' option in the Arrangment tab of iMac display and voila. Got what I wanted.

  • If I run a second monitor from an iMac, will I be able to achieve a resolution of 1928x1080 which is the max resolution of my second monitor?

I am changing to an iMac later this year. At the moment I run a Sony Vaio all-in-one and use a second monitor with it. Although the resolution of the second monitor is 1928x1080, I can only get it to work at a max of 1680x1050 so it's a bit fuzzy.
My question is, when using an iMac, will it be able to support the additional monitor at its max 1928x1080?
    Thanks

You are only limited by what the maximum resolution is on the external display. Look at it's specifications, then when you have connected it to your iMac look at System Preferences - Diplays - Display tab and choose the resolution on the external display.
BTW please complete your profile. It's difficult to assist you without knowing anything about your iMac. Much like asking Sally Ormond for financial advice and not telling her anything about your financial situation.

  • What's wrong with my second monitor?

My second Apple Disply worked fine in Jaguar, but yesterday I installed Panther, and now the second monitor is gray and has hardly any resolution. The second monitor is using an ATI card XClaim 3d Pro in the PCI slot. I downloaded ATI's universal update (8/05), but it did not fix the problem. I was afraid (from past experience) that this might happen, that's why I stuck with Jaguar all this time, but I thought by now, there was a fix for this. I never touched any cables or moved the computer during the install. I'm ready to pull my hair out. I need two monitors for my work. Any suggestions? Should I switch to Tiger?

Thank you. It makes sense now, because the board came out of my old G3. Why did it work in 10.2 and not in 10.3? Any suggestions on what card I should buy for the PCI slot? The AGP slot already has a RAGE 128. I just want it to work. I don't do games or anything fancy. I'm a graphic designer and I use the second monitor to view tools, etc.

  • Crazy crazy crazy! Airport loses internet when second monitor attached!

Can this really be happening? I decided to try using a second monitor attaching via a mini dvi -dvi converter. Several attempts to get it recognised by the iMac without any success. Scoured the internet groups to see that very many (and I mean very many) others had this problem.
Solved it by swapping my dvi-I lead for a dvi-D lead. The difference is that the DVI-I lead has fewer pins than the DVI-D lead and the iMac mini dvi socked supplies a DVI-D signal. Phew!
So--pleased with myself at surmounting this I fired up Final Cut Pro, dragged the canvas window to the second monitor and had to play around with the resolution setting to get a stable playing of the timeline.
Decided to go on online and see if I was alone on this.
    NO INTERNET CONNECTION!!!
30 mins later decided to unplug the second monitor (Philips 200) and got back my inet connection.
Tried the routine again and sure enough each time the second monitor was connected I lost the Airport connection!
Is it possible that the proximity of the second monitor fouls the wireless signal?
    Or what?

    Kaybee31 wrote:
So far no one has either claimed the same problem or offered a possible explanation.
As I said this loss of internet connection when 2nd monitor is connected is unbelievably odd.
It sounds like another case of EMI (Electromagnetic interference). I believe this is at the root of all these weird Airport or wireless problems. Interestingly enough many of these anomalies are exhibited on the newer generation Macs. Different materials were used, shielding could have been compromised either for cost cutting or by design error. Regardless I'm sure Apple is aware, unfortunately those who purchased these machines may be in the worse case, left with hard wiring for reliable internet and or network connections.......sorry.....

  • Installing from Tiger to Snow Leopard using only external monitor?

Backstory: I currently have a mac book pro which i procured from a friend after he dropped it and broke the screen. He promptly went to the apple store and bought a new one and had them swap the hard drives. After hearing this I told him he could most likely still use the old one with an external monitor even if the screen was broken. I hooked up an external monitor myself and what do you know the Tiger set up screen came up and i proceeded to set up this mac book pro for use.
    The issue:
I now wish to upgrade this laptop to snow leopard or to leopard than snow leopard. The problem being when I insert the Snow Leopard disc into the drive and click install os when the computer reboots and reaches the set up screen it uses the second monitor as an extended desktop, not as a duplicate.
This means i cannot see the install screens and therefore cannot upgrade.
The F7 shortcut seems to do nothing which is sad because it worked in the initial setup of tiger.
Does anyone know a workaround so I can duplicate the screens? Why would this not be the default behavior? What is the point of extending the desktop DURING setup?
Also it seems some people are reporting problems with external monitors not being properly recognized once 10.6.3 is installed. Is there certain external monitors which avoid this?

You could boot the laptop in target mode and install the OS from another computer onto the laptop drive.

  • Premiere CC won't playback on my second monitor

I can use the second monitor for putting anything else (like a window) but it doesn't playback the footage I'm using like before. The problem started when I updated Premiere several months ago and I can't find a solution. It does recognize the monitor and it is selected for playback; I've tried turning that off, rebooting Premiere and then turning it on again and nothing happens. Also tried the "Enable Transmission" option, wich is on also, but still doesn't work.
