Use ethernet port to connect a pc

Hi
I am planning to use my raspberry pi to do a few projects, but it is not near the router (needs connection thought  Ethernet - and before anyone asks im not able to use a wifi dongle to connect due to project requirements size wise ) but near my officejet 6700, can i use the Ethernet port on the printer to connect my raspberry pi to the network the printer is connected to. Do i need to fiddle with settings?
Can anyone help
Thanks in advance

No you can not use the Ethernet port on the printer.  This is only to connect the printer to a wired network.

  • Using Ethernet port of 1760 to connect to internet?

    Hi
I wonder if it is possible to equip a 1760-V router with 4 FXO cards and then connect this router to an ADSL line using ethernet port of 1760? or I have to use WIC card for this purpose.

1760-v can be equiped with max of 4 FXO cards:
    WIC/VIC slot 1
    WIC/VIC slot 1
    VIC slot 2
    VIC slot 3.
If you use aDSL router (do not use modem) in front of 1760 then you can use Ethernet connection between 1760 and aDSL.
Otherwise you need to leave one WIC.VIC slot for DASL POTS line card.
Here is some indicative config for you:

  • Can time capsule be connected wirelessly and still use ethernet ports for other devices?

can time capsule be connected wirelessly and still use ethernet ports for other devices? we have it connected wirelessly but devices connected to the ethernet ports are not working.

Not as an additional router.. the TC will be plugged into the main router via ethernet (or ethernet equivalent)..
Then the TC is setup in bridge mode. It will simply act as a Switch and HDD.
The wireless can be setup in a number of ways.
From your convenience point of view use it in roaming network mode..
you simply give the TC the same Wireless Name as the existing routers SSID.
Same security setting and password. WPA2 Personal = WPA2 AES which is the best.
But they both use different wireless channels.. normally if you leave the TC on auto it will work fine, but I prefer to control the network.. so set the main router to say 1 and the TC to 11.
You can also use a completely different wireless name etc.. that is up to you. It is still a single flat network and the only thing that is important is only having one router.

  • How can i browse FP 2000 via serial port same use Ethernet port(RJ 45)?

I am a new user for  labview.I develope my program with FP 2000 but I have some problem
1 How can i browse FP 2000 via serial port same use Ethernet port(RJ 45)? if it can Tell me please.
2 If  I use GSM/GPRS modem via FP 2000 rs 232 port (I under stand how to send AT command) and leave it stand alone
Can I dial modem and browse file in FP 2000 same as use Ethernetport?
Someone please help me.Thank you very much.

    Hi!
First, I can say that your project involves many things, I cannot describe all features in the forum, and I'm not used with GPRS modems (my modems are base band serial modems...).
Anyway, I would say that in your project you should proceed like this:
          1) Configure your FP 2000 module via MAX and ethernet connection;
          2) Download an embedded application to your module (build in LabView Real-Time)
          3) In your application, you should build a kind of serial port manager, and by the means of serial port you send/receive commands from PC.
The commands from PC can include "Tell me the about the FP 2000 file system ", or "switch on line X", or anything you need.
I think it would be difficult to use Internet exp, because you use IE with TCP/IP, and TCP/IP is over ethernet.
I know that for Windows you can find some wrappers that make you "see" the serial port as an ethernet, but these wrapper do not exist under filed Point, and you shoul build one yourself!!!(and that's not easy).
For example, to browse your files, you should build a VI that searches through your file system, and reports, via serial, the files present in a directory (it's an example....).
About communication between GPRS modems and FP2000, I know nothing.  I suppose that these modems accept serial inputs, so you'll have to configure your serial port on FP 2000 with the correct baud rate, parity, and so on..... and you send your data to the modem.  The modem will transfer data in its way, no matter on how it does.
To send data to your modem you shoud take a look to some Serial communication examples.  What I suggest you, first, is to connect the serial port of FP2000 to a PC, and test communication between PC and FP2000, without modems. Just direct cable connection!  If you're able to do this, insertion of modems is the next step, and should be quite easy.  If you're not able to make the PC receive strings of data from FP2000, over  RS232, adding modems is a further complication, and you won't come out of this mess!
So, what I say, is just build, for now, a simple embedded application for FP2000, that, using RS232, sends data to a PC (you should see data sent with use of Hyper terminal).
To build this application, use Instrument I/O --> VISA commands (VISA open, VISA write, and Property node should be enough, for now).
Please, let me know if this helps......
        Have a nice (programming) day!

  • As a Verizon FIOS client, can we just use Ethernet cable to connect to time capsule, or do we need their router to connect to the time capsule?

As a Verizon FIOS client, can we just use Ethernet cable to connect to time capsule or do we need the Verizon router to connect to time capsule?

The Time Capsule is indeed a wireless router with simultaneous dual band capability...and a hard drive for backup purposes. You can use that to your advantage if you configure the Time Capsule as I suggested in Bridge Mode.
The Time Capsule will provide a 802.11n 5 GHz band and a 802.11n/g/b compatible 2.4 GHz band to allow virtually any device to connect to the network.
I suppose that you could also use the "g" wireless network provided by the Verizon router as a "guest" network or something similar if you really do need another wireless network.
It might be possible to configure the Time Capsule as the main router on the network....that's a question for Verizon. But even if you might be able to do this, I'm sure it is not supported by Verizon, so you would be on your own in the event of any Internet connection difficulties on your service.
And, since the Time Capsule does not have a built in modem....you would still need to add a separate modem to the installation anyway.
That's why my suggestion is to use the Verizon device as the "modem" and let the Time Capsule provide the dual band wireless network and of course, handle the Time Machine backups.

  • I have two airport extremes, one acting as amodem and the other operating in bridge mode.  The extremes are connected using ethernet, but remain connected even when I disconnect the Cat5a cable. How do I know if they are operating wired or wirelessly

I have two airport extremes, one acting as a modem and the other operating in bridge mode.  The extremes are connected using ethernet, but remain connected even when I disconnect the Cat5a cable (I did this to check that the 100 feet of Cat 5a cable connecting them was working). How do I find out if they are operating wired or wirelessly?  I want to know as I assume I will get much better speeds if they are wired.

Hi Bob, many thanks for the prompt response.  I think I did what you suggested, but you're the expert so I have sent over a few screenshots.  The extreme in question is High Birches Home Office (the rest of the network has been in place and working well for some time).  My new home office is going to be in the garden, circa 100 feet from the main house.  I have installed armoured Cat5e cable down to the shed that is going to be adjacent to the home office once built and situated the High Birches Home Office Airport Extreme there temporarily.  Everything works well, so I was surprised when I unplugged the ethernet, that it still worked.  I also tested the ethernet cable by switching off my laptop's wifi and unplugging the cable from the airport extreme and directly into the laptop and that worked ok.
If the screenshots below (I did every Airport utility tab for the High Birches Home Office) don't tell you anything more, then the set-by-step instructions would greatly appreciated so I can ensure I completed the steps correctly.

  • Can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and Airport express for printer

How / can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and use an airport express to set up wifi for printer and Apple TV?
    Macbook Pro. OS X 10.9.4

I've never tried it, so I don't know what the results will be.
However, you can move Ethernet to the top of the Services list in Network System Prefs which will cause it to be the Internet source. There is a command in the gear menu to set the Service order.  However, after thinking about it, if there isn't an internet connection via Wi-Fi, it might automatically drop down to the Ethernet connection.
Then, you can set up your Wi-Fi so that it doesn't connect to the Internet, as Linc stated. How to do that would be dependent on the Router.

  • Time Capsule is connected wirelessly and I need to use ethernet ports for other devices.

I have a 1st Gen Time capsule 802.11n and an Airport Extreem round hockey puck style.  My airport utillity program is version 6.2  My OS is 10.7.5 My internet is from a verizon hot spot Jetpak. All my devices, laptop, desk top, printer, and time machine are running off this jetpak.
How can I use the ethernet ports on the back of my time capsule for a device that I had pluged in to my airport extreem?  Before I had verizon, I had hughes net for my internet provider. My time capsule was the main unit in a WDS network with the airport extreem. I no longer have Hughes Net and I need to run this item that was pluged into the airport extreem ethernet port.
Of course with the newer airport utillity software (6.2) I can not control the older airport extreem anymore. This does not help my situation

You need to load the older utility.. 5.6 is still available for lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
WDS is hidden option so hold down the option key..
But I would search around for a cheap airport extreme N square type.. doesn't matter how old and you can pick up the older ones for $50 or so easily.. Then you use wireless extend which works much better than WDS. Using WDS you are killing wireless speed for everything.

  • I can not use the Ethernet Port to connect another device.  My Airport Express allowed me to do this.

I want to use the Ethernet Port for my Apply TV for another device (Direct TV box), but it doesn't work.  I have Airport Express with an Ethernet port and I was able to plug my Direct TV box to download.

It's not designed to extend a network, and plugging in ethernet disables wi-fi in any case.

  • Ethernet port not connected - airport working - not able to get online

Hi, new poster. Never had an issue with our beloved iMac 20 inch Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz - 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It's old but it serves us, we hope it's not shot. Power goes out a lot here, system has surge protection but no battery backup. System just goes down without being shutdown properly. We used wired Ethernet. No the problem. Last time power just went out, the system would not boot up. I searched around and found out to use the DVD to verify/repair disk. It finally did and system now boots up. However, it says the Ethernet is not connected. It is. I tried three different cables that worked with our laptop and two different routers, all that happens is the light on the router flashed on and off. While on the network status in sys pref displays no cable detected vs. Cable connected but not connected to internet. Assumed the port was shot. OK, turned on the airport. Connects, gets DHCP assigned IP address and/or accepts static IP but when we launch Safari says it can't connect. Tried Opera browser, same thing. Sophos AV also can't connect for updates. All these network configurations had worked previously until this last power outage. Searched for help, as I don't want to waste peoples time. Found out about these things that follow: SMC RESET - PRAM RESET - Delete connection and recreate same - Network Diagnostics - Hardware Diagnostics - Verify & Repair disk ••• Nothing makes it connect to Internet. Network diagnostics gets to end but will not get connected. Hardware diagnostics regular and extended report no issues. We think the logic board is shot given everything we tried and symptoms with system. Can anyone suggest something we did not try of the things we did listed above? Please help us save this thing from the recycling center. Thanks in advance. Sorry for the long post, wanted to be thorough with what's going on and what we have already tried and done thanks to searching these forums for the last week.

    Yikes, sounds like big problems!

  • We traded our home internet service for a Sprint Hot Spot.  The hot spot does not have an ethernet port to connect through.  Can we connect our time capsule to the wireless hot spot?

Hello, we switched our home internet service from an ethernet modem to a wireless hot spot.
Do you know if there is a way to connect our time capsule to the hot spot?
Everything I read only suggests connecting through an ethernet cable.  I'm hoping there is a way to do this.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!!!

No you can't join a wireless hotspot with a Time Capsule directly via it's 'join' option (tried and failed - well to be exact it kinda works but the Time Capsule's ethernet ports no longer work).
What you can do is buy an airport express and use it's 'join' option to connect to the iPhone's hotspot. Then you connect the airport express via ethernet to the time capsule (in bridge-mode).
You can then connect your computers to the time capsule via ethernet or use it's wireless function to set up wireless network (with a different name to that of the hotspot) that your wifi stuff can connect to.

  • Using ethernet port as bridge to wireless network

I've connected TV to MacBook using Ethernet cable and enabled Internet sharing. TV can connect to the Internet, but can't use other network resources. I want to play music and watch photos on that TV from PCs connected to the network using DLNA technology. At this moment TV can't see/connect to DLNA servers.
I was able to do this connecting TV to the Ethernet port of Airport Express, but I prefer to connect TV to my network using MacBook. *What settings I need to make on my MacBook to enable my TV using all network resources.*

If I read you correctly, this is not a bridge. Internet Sharing is to connect devices via the Mac, but not to act as a router. If you look at the IP numbers, they are not in the same series (e.g. 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.2.2), so ethernet connected devices will not be able to see the wifi ones. A cheap wifi router in bridge mode would be an easier solution.

  • Can't connect using ethernet but can connect using Airport

The problem I am currently facing is when I try to plug an ethernet cable into my MacBook Pro I can't get on the internet. At home I use an AEBS and connect fien, but when I go over to a friends house and they don't have wireless I try to hook up using the ethernet cable directly from the modem to connect and I can't.
I open System Pref and it says on the left side under ethernet "Self Assigned IP" On the right hand side it says ethernet is connected and underneath that it says, "ethernet has self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect."
I though this was a problem at his house and when I went home I tried it and I get the same thing. I used to have a Powerbook using Tiger and it did the same thing. Once I turn my Aiprort back on and plug the ethernet cable back into my AEBS I get on line.
Am I doing something wrong? I figured if I just plug in an ethernet cable it should detect it and work.
    Thanks

I am not sure if this is your problem, but I believe a lot of cable modems need to be power cycled if you switch the device that is connected to them. They only recognize the MAC address of the first device that connects to them after they have been power cycled.
Although this was a couple of years ago, I was trying to investigate something (I can't remember what now) and I unplugged my router from my cable modem and plugged one of my computers directly to it. I found I couldn't do anything on the Internet. Later, when I was looking at the Comcast forums, I found the information about needing to power cycle the modem to get it to accept the "new" device.

  • Dynadock U3.0 - Not able to use Ethernet port after Win 8.1 update

    Hi everybody,
i am using a Dynadock u3.0 dock with my Vaio SCP 13.
Since I updated my device to Windows 8.1 Update 1 I am not able to use the Ethernet port of the Dynadock.
    Before that everything worked fine.
I am not able to reinstall the drivers correctly (tried 7.6m0, 7.5m2). While the driver insaller tries to start i am getting an error message, that the installer is not able to set a bunch of registry Keys (SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DisplayLinkGA\D evice1) (till 0). (Image 1)
If i ignore those messages and do install the driver, the Ethernet port will remain uninstalled in the device manager. (Image 2)
If I try to install the driver manually (DisplayLink Network Adapter NCM), Ill get an error message that a driver was found but that the access was denied. (Image 3)
I started the safe mode and could install the driver. But if I reboot to normal mode, the device could not be started.
I also tried to disable UAC and I am logged in as the "real" administrator.
Please find the error messaged attached (in German):

BTW: If I unzip the installer (7.6m0) and install the *inf for the right ven&dev (4503) it still does not work...
I dont know what to do anymore...

    Hi
After Windows 8.1 upgrade, you should also update the Display Link driver/software
    This is very important!
The latest driver can be downloaded here:

Note: the old version should be removed!

  • Xserve ethernet ports shows connected though no physical connection

    Hi all...
We have a very strange issue in the 3 latest xserves (with Nehalem processors)that is purchsed couple of days back. The issue is, in the Network, System preference, both the ethernet ports shows green and displays as "Connected" even though there is no physical connectivity. This active state of the eth ports is visible only in the network system preference and the port state shows as inactive if we check through CLI and the server monitor. Both the ports functions normally except for these wrong info in the system preference.
Have anyone faced any issue with the latest Nehalem processor Xserves or is this be a bug in the OS X. The installed OS version is 10.5.7 and the firmware is up to date.
    Please help !!

Call Apple Support for assistance; this looks to be a nasty error with multiple new Xserve boxes and given these are likely covered under their initial warranty, which implies there's something seriously weird with 10.5.6 or 10.5.7, or with the Xserve early 2009 boxes, or firmware, or with what the configuration tools allow.
