Use imac as second monitor

I understand this can be done in some previous generations, and am just not sure whether it works in my situation.
I have a MacBook Pro (2009) and a brand new iMac 27" (2011). It seems that MBP has a mini displayport and iMac has 2 thunderbolt ports. I am curious whether I can use iMac as second monitor for my MBP. If possible, which cable should I use, a mini displayport-to-mini displayport cable from Belkin or thunderbolt-to-thunderbolt cable from Apple.

You can't except through a product such as ScreenRecycler. The iMac's Thunderbolt port won't accept video from a non-Thunderbolt source.

  • Macbook Pro running Windows with Boot Camp, wanting to use iMac as second monitor.

I am using a Macbook Pro that is running Windows with Boot Camp. I want to connect it to my iMac so that I can use the iMac as a second monitor.
If it is not possible, I also have a TV that I could use using an HDMI, however when I tried this my Macbook Pro running Windows 8.1 did not detect it in the Display Settings.
What are my options? I just want to use my iMac or TV as a second monitor!!
    Any help is appreciated, tMachanks!

  • How do I connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?

    Hi !
I was wondering if it were possible to  connect an older imac to my new imac to use as a second monitor?
My older imac is from 2006. The new one is a 2012 imac.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Look this article over, the key is to connect either mini display port or thunderbolt and using CMD+F2, let me know if this helps or if it doesn't work out. I'll find another solution if this doesn't work Joel ^_^

  • Can i use my imac as second monitor for my  pc / notebook

Can i use my imac as second monitor for my  pc / notebook

Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be  posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:

    This Apple article:

  • IMac as second monitor

    I have a 27 iMac and a 24 iMac.
Can I, and how do I, go about using the 24 iMac as second monitor?

Niel, forgive my ignorance, I am trying to wrap my mind around this.
I have a 2009 24-inch, and a 2010 27-inch. The easiest solution would be to run male to male mini display cable between both machines and use the 24, with the 27 as the second monitor.
However, if it is not too much hassle, the opposite could be better.
To use the 27 and have the 24 as the second monitor, you say I would have to "set up a network".
Is that merely running a cable, or what exactly is involved?
And, after setting up a network, I would use the ScreenSaver application.
Presuming that I was successful in setting up and running the 27 via this method, would the ultimate result be slower than running the 27 as the second monitor?
I do not do any games or graphics, primarily making books with CS5.

  • I am looking for the image file that is used on the second monitor .

Iam looking for the image file that is used on the second monitor when an app is in full screen mode.  not the NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png as thats for the fullscreen background generally and not the one for the dashboard eather.

  • Can I use iMac as a monitor?

Can I use iMac as a monitor to plug my media player to it? That is only turn on the iMac Mon, not the OS X.
    If yes, how?
    Many thanks

No. All methods of using the iMac as a display require interaction with the OS installed on it.

  • Use older 2008 iMac as second monitor for new iMac

    Hi all,
I have one of these older machines that has no real purpose
      http://support.apple.com/kb/sp485
but would serve me very well as a second monitor for my brand spanking new iMac.
The specs seem to note that there is a video output - but I'm not seeing anything about video IN.
Is it possible to use this older iMac as a monitor?

that looks cool, and there is a free trial.
I am not keen on using the WiFi to do this - my old iMac has firewire but the new one doesn't.
Besides using the ludicrously expensive Thunderbolt <-> Firewire 800 convertor
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD464ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter
is there any other way to create a wired connection between these devices? I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a USB <-> USB network connection.

  • Use 2008 iMac as second monitor for pc laptop

I have a 2008 iMac and wish to use it as a second monitor for my wife's laptop.  I originally bought a mini display port to vga adaptor cable and realized that it would not work.  I have to go back and buy the mini DVI to vga adapter cable to use it.  But in scouring the google links - I saw that it might not work.  It had said for 2011 and above it might, but did not mention earlier models.  I could use some direction.  If it not possible, I would rather not go and buy a new cable and try.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks  .

You need to set up Virtual Network Computing.

  • 24" imac, can this be used as a second monitor

    Hi All,
I have a 2007 iMac and on the verge of buying a new Mac Pro Desktop.
So i was wondering if I can use this imac as the monitor for the New Mac Pro.
This will save me money for buying the new monitor. Can some1 pls be able to tell me how this would work?
    Many thanks,
    Apurva Shah

Only Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and Mid 2011 and newer iMacs can be used as an external screen with Target Display mode, so your Mac is not compatible.
However, you can use an application like ScreenRecycler to use the iMac as an external display through the network. You just need that both Macs are connected to the same network

  • Late 2009 imac as second monitor

Hello, I just purchased a new iMac retina 27 inch. I am trying to use my late 2009 iMac 27 inch as a second display using a mini display port. I can get it to work my old cheap second monitor, but when I try the 2009 mac, and I press command F2, it shows the options to set up as a second monitor on the new retina mac but then after a few seconds the options disappear and they go back to being separate monitors. Just wondering if anyone has been able to make this work as I'd hate to have to sell my 2009 mac. Thanks in advance.

You're starting in Target Disk Mode not Target Display Mode. Follow these instructions:
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.  (This is where you're going wrong)
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

  • 27 in IMac as second monitor for G4 Powerbook

Is it possible to use a 27 in Imac as a second monitor for a 15 in G4 powerbook

Is it possible to use a 27 in Imac as a second monitor for a 15 in G4 powerbook
Use ScreenRecycler. The feature on the current 27-inch iMac which provides video in with the Mini DisplayPort requires that the device sending the video also has a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort; if any other sort of adapter is required, it won't work.

  • Use laptop as second monitor for hp touchsmart 310-1020

Product name: HP TouchSmart 310-1020 PC.
    OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Can I use my laptop as a second monitor for my HP? It doesn't have an hdmi port, so is there any software or converters someone suggests?

Sorry to say, but it won't be possible - any video ports on your notebook will be output only.
Actually that's not what the OP asked, and it's incorrect since you're not answering the question he asked. There are software packages out there that will let the OP do what they want between multiple PCs. Multiplicity by Stardock is a quick example http://www.stardock.com/products/multiplicity/ and it's only $30

  • Use iMac as secondary monitor for my PC(Windows)

    Hi,
    I have a PC running windows 7 and an iMac 27" i5 running OSX10.6.6.
I'd like to use my iMac as a secondary monitor for my PC (I still need some applications from my windows computer and I dont want to install windows on this beautiful mac).
Is that possible with the _Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter_ on the apple store?
Sorry if it has been asked before, couldn't find it!
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
No, that adapter will not help you accomplish your goal. It only works in one direction; mini-DisplayPort to DVI to allow you to attach a DVI video device to your iMac, such as a projector or display by the m-DP. You will need either a video card in the PC that provides DisplayPort output, then you can use a DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort cable, or you will need a converter to switch your PC's DVI output to DisplayPort signal. Those converters run US$150 from 3rd party developers such as Atlona or Kanex and are then restricted to a a maximum 720p resolution.
