Use iPhone as an external hard drive?

I am going to be purchasing an iPhone in the near future, and I was wondering, does the iPhone have an external hard drive mode? What I mean is, on the iPod, I can turn on "use as external hard drive" as a means of transferring files (i.e. word documents) to another computer. Can the iPhone do this? Thanks.

Why would you think it would be? The basic hardware is almost identical.
According to the Touch manual it doesn't appear to be able to do this either (I base this on the fact it isn't formated, as a "regular" iPod has to be for the Mac or PC, as well as the sync and operations within iTune is the same. But without one in my hand I couldn't say for sure).
If you are interested in this ask on the Touch forum -- I'm sure they know.

  • I have been using my newly purchased Iphone for Iphonagraphy (Iphone photography).  I would like to sync my Iphone to my external hard drive so I can move photos in and out of my Iphone, to make use of the apps I have exclusively on my phone.

I want to sync my Iphone with the external hard drive so I can move photos from my phone to the hard drive AND BACK!  I'm using a Windows OS

    You have several options:
Connect the phone using a cable to your computer. Use the camera and scanner wizard to import the photos from the Camera Roll, then organize them and sync them back to the Photos app (see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083). the Camera Roll is intended for temporary storage only.
Save the images to your Dropbox account. It's free, http://www.dropbox.com. There's a Dropbox app for the iPhone, and also for Windows, Mac and Linux. Dropbox can also be accessed using a web browser. Dropbox (and similar services) provide cloud-based storage that can be accessed from anywhere.
    Use Photo Stream
Email or text (MMS) the images to yourself
Create a Picasa or Shutterfly account, save the images to it, then download to your computer
    I'm sure there are others.

  • How do i back up my iphone to an external hard drive and not my computer

How do I back up my iphone to an external hard drive attached to my pc and not my pc?  My disk on my pc is almost full and even though I selected the external hard drive it still seems to try to back it up to my computer, then says I don't have sufficient storage.  I cahnged my folder under preferences to the External Drive folder.

This is where iTunes stores backups for different operating systems: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now.  But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go.

  • Managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive

Hello, I need some help with managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive.
    Background:
I have 1,200 photos/videos on my iPhone 4S on the camera roll and need to delete them to save space. Most are photos/videos of my new baby which I would be devastated to lose, so I want to be 110% sure that I have them backed up properly and accessible.
I frequently hook my iPhone up to iPhoto to download all of the latest photos to iPhoto.
I have done Time Machine back ups and just did a latest one yesterday.
I would like to save my camera roll into a folder on my hard-drive so that all of these photos are in one place in case I need to access them (and not spread across different folders like in iPhoto).
My Mac (Macbook Pro - circa 2009) is now telling me that my 'Starter Disc is nearly full' and won't save all of the photos from my camera roll.
    My questions;
Are photos stored both in iPhoto and Pictures folder, and if so are they duplicates?
I've heard that Time Machine only backs up full libraries and so cannot be used to access individual photos - is this true? If so, how do you access individual photos/files from my external hard-drive?
How and where should I delete older photos from to save space on my Mac - iPhoto or Pictures? (once I know how to access them from my external drive if needed).
How do I delete all of my photos from my iPhone camera roll in one go? - I can only see a way to delete the 1,200 of them individually.
Going forward where is the best place for me to synch/upload my photos for medium term storage/access on my Mac?
I would consider myself quite intelligent but when it comes to this topic, I'm happy to be spoken to in very simplistic terms!
    Thank you.

Import the photos to iPhoto - then select the photos in iPhoto and export (file menu ==> export) to the desired location

  • Directly transfering pictures from iPhone (4S) to external hard drive?

    Hi,
I'm looking for a way to directly transfer the pictures from my iPhone to my external hard drive without having to import them on my mac. I'd also like to find a way to delete some pictures off my phone using my mac (again without importing them). iPhoto isn't really doing much for me (could also be the case that I just don't know how to properly use it).
Basically, I'm looking for a way to do this as simple and easy as I would have done using my PC (via files etc).
I'd love to find a quick and easy solution for this as I have used my PC until now but want to swap to only using my Macbook to be more independent/efficient.
    Thanks in advance!

It may be a terminology issue but Apple uses the word "import" for any transfer of photos from the phone to a computer (or to an external drive attached to a computer). http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
You can (I believe -- haven't tried it) import them directly to an external drive attached to a Mac by using Image Capture. Image Capture is in Lauchpad -- probably in the "Other" folder in Lauchpad. Easiest way to start it is via Spotlight Search. It can be set to open automatically when a phone or camera is connected by opening iPhoto and going to menu named iPhoto and opening Preferences.
With the phone connected, the bottom of the Image Capture window allows you to select where you want the photos to be saved.

  • Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup.  However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails.  And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external.  Sort of a catch 22.  Any ideas?

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

  • I am not much of a computer technician. I bought a time capsule thinking I could use this for an external hard drive and keep my MAC hard drive free. Was I mistaken? One I back everthing up on the TC, can I delete everything off of my MAC?

I am not much of a computer technician. I bought a time capsule thinking I could use this for an external hard drive and keep my MAC hard drive free. Was I mistaken? Once I back everything up on the TC, can I delete everything off of my MAC and then use my TC as my hard drive??

Once I back everything up on the TC, can I delete everything off of my MAC and then use my TC as my hard drive??
TC was designed to backup your Mac. The TC literature is pretty clear about this:
If your Mac's hard drive has a problem....it will sooner or later....you can use your backup on the TC to rebuild your Mac.
But.....if you move all of your data to the TC from your Mac....you only have one version of that data now, and it is on the TC.
Have you thought about what will happen when....not if....the TC has a problem?  Since the only version of your important data was on the TC, and the TC has failed......you lose all of your data.....because you have no backup.
A much better plan would be to add a USB or FireWire hard drive and connect it directly to your Mac. Move the data on your Mac over to the hard drive.
Then, the TC will backup both your Mac and the hard drive.  So, you have original data on on one drive and backups on another drive.
That would be a minimum backup plan. Most of us have more than one set of backups.

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

  • Can i use applications from an external hard drive?

Can i use applications from an external hard drive?

Photoshop itself needs to reside inside of it's Applications folder so that it has access to it's Libraries and plugins. So if you are going to attempt to store and run it from an external drive you need to copy the whole Application folder or install it directly to the external drive. Even still I am not 100% positive it will work as I know it still needs to access your Library/Application Support for additional files and licensing.
Why do you want to run Photoshop from an external drive?

  • Retrieving data from hard-drive - using it as an external hard-drive

Hi, first post here. Really hope you guys can help me out
My mac died over the christmas holidays (the motherboard fried from a water accident) and consequently I cannot get access to all my music and pictures on its hard-drive. I know the hard-drive is still functionable because an employee from a mac reseller store managed to retrieve as essay I desperately needed for it.
What I want to know is how I can remove the hard-drive from the mac and how i can use it as an external hard-drive so I can retrieve all of the information from it into my new laptop - which is a windows I'm ashamed to say (money is tight!). Also, would the fact my new laptop is windows affect whether i can move the data from the mac hard-drive to it?
Hope you can help, I need those pictures!

Hey Robot and sorry for your lose -
Here's a video to get your drive out: [Video to get Drive out|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuyi-NWLLz4]. You'll need to go through the the point of removing the EMI shield with the T8. Then put the drive in a a 2.5" SATA enclosure and hook it up to your new notebook.

  • Is there any way to connect an iPhone to an external hard drive without the use of a computer?

    Hello All,
I am planning to travel to Central America, and I want to take pictures with my iPhone. I only have 8 GB memory, so I wanted to take my 1 TB WD Mac External Hard Drive with me on the trip. Is there any way I can connect my iPhone directly to the external hard drive, without the use of a computer? Thanks in advance!

The external hard drive has only one input port which is usb, so you can only use usb here. Also try considering online storage.

  • Using Ipod as a External Hard Drive for Downloading

    Hi,
My question is, my computer is older and does not have a lot of storage space (18 GB). I would like to know if it is possible to download files (such as videos) from the web onto the Ipod and then using Itunes to play the files.
    Any response is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

If all of your existing library is on the iPod, the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. That would allow you to restore anything you'd bought from iTunes. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
