Use Network ready printer with Time Capsule?

Recently bought a laser all in one Canon printer that was network ready. Canon tech support told me it would not be compatible with Time Capsule (500 GB) as the wireless source. Is this true?
If true, what printer brands will network easily with the Time Capsule?
Thank you!

Welcome to the discussions!
If the all-in-one is "network ready", it will have an ethernet port to connect to the network. It will need to connect by ethernet if you want to be able to use the scan, fax, copy, etc functions.
If you are planning to connect the all-in-one to the Time Capsule USB port, the printing function will work if the device is compatible. The other functions will not be supported.

  • Using Airport Express as separate wifi network vs extender with Time Capsule?

Hello all.  I recently converted my home computer network from Windows/PC based to an iMac with Time Capsule.  On my previous setup, I had a Cisco/Linksys router with wifi, and I also had two Airport Expresses in separate areas of the house where the Linksys had a weak signal.  Obviously, I had the Airport Expresses set up as "separate" wifi networks, as they could not be used as network extenders with the Linksys.  This setup seemed to work really good, as the 3 wifi networks provided good blanket coverage in all parts of the house.  Each network also seemed to "hand-off" to the other pretty well, meaning that Airport Express 1 would show as the active network when you moved far enough away from the Linksys (or insert any of the network names here, even though I'm pretty sure that the device accessing the network has more to do with this than the networks themselves).  In particular, the speeds that I got from the Airport Expresses actually eclipsed the speeds that I would get from the Linksys wifi.
My issue is that after I converted everything, I left the Airport Expresses as "separate networks" and essentially removed the Linksys/Cisco router and replaced it with the Time Capsule.  So I still have 3 separate wifi networks, just like before, with the Time Capsule network taking the place of the Linksys wifi network.  While the Linksys and the Airport Expresses seemed to co-exist together nicely, I get the feeling that the TC and the AEs are somehow working against each other or at least competing with each other for bandwidth.  For example, if I have my iPhone right beside my iMac and TC, and I run a speed test on the iPhone using the TC wifi network, I get download and upload speeds in the range that I am expecting (30-40 mbps download).  However, when I walk down the hallway to the other end of the house, the TC tends to remain the dominant wifi network, even when I am in the same room with one of the AEs (this is where they used to "hand off" nicely between networks).  When you run a speed test in this location still on the TC wifi, the speed drops down to 5-7 mbps, and worse, I believe the signal becomes inconsistent because webpages and data often seem to be freezing in the middle of downloading.  I understand that the distance from the TC is causing this, because my solution has been to manually switch from the TC to the closest AE, and that fixes the issue.  Run a speed test after I manually switch to the closest AE when I am in the same room as an AE, and the speeds pop back up to 30-40 mbps.
My question is this:  would switching the AEs to "extenders" of the TC wifi network help this issue?  Honestly, my laziness was one reason that I did not do this when I setup the TC initially, because I have several devices that access the AE wifi networks that I'd have to update with the new network name and password.  Everything was working great before, and I just didn't want to upset the apple cart.  But if I have created an unfriendly environment between the TC and the two AEs, I certainly have no problem making the change now.  I just wasn't sure if making this change would fix my problem or not.  I know it's a mundane thing, but I'd like to be able to roam the house without continuously having to manually switch between wifi networks to get a consistent signal.
Sorry if this is a simple issue.  I am admittedly a newbie with the TC and its interaction with the AEs.
    Thanks in advance!!

It is not a simple issue.
Exactly which method works best is going to take some experimentation.
The way you are trying to set it up as a roaming network is generally considered the best.. but the devices like iphones do not hand off neatly.
It is interesting that they in fact used to hand off better using the Linksys.. which could be due to its poorer range. The new TC having so much better range is causing the phones to not swap "towers" to the local express.
Test it with a Mac laptop.. as generally they do hand off better.
I cannot quite figure out if you are using roaming correctly. All the wireless should have identical names, with identical security setting and passwords.
The only thing that should be different is wireless channels on each item. And you are likely just using auto anyway.
So each device is creating a wireless network. And for 2.4ghz one should be channel 1, then another channel 6 and another channel 11. For 5ghz it will be same idea but there are more channels available.
When you extend wireless, everything runs the same channel. But the wireless speed is reduced. You must disconnect ethernet to each of the expresses.. and the problem is your 30-40mbps will reduce permanently to 15-20mbps for all clients. So take your choice.. 15-20mbps for all clients forced to double hop is better than 5-7mbps which you experience now when you walk around.. although I am not sure how much browsing you do whilst walking. You may need to compromise which is the better out of several not great alternatives.
I would have a test.. which is wrong btw.. but I have heard that it works.
In your roaming network at the present time. Try setting each router to a manual wireless channel.. and fix all of them the same. So for instance, set 2.4ghz to channel 11. Try fixing the 5ghz as well, say the TC is defaulting to 149, it might not actually respond to manual wireless channels.. you will need to test this.. say set to 36 or 40 and see if the TC is actually changed.. if not just set all the expresses to 149 as well. What you are doing is trying to reinforce the wireless in each area.. but this is actually wrong. So all will have same wireless name and same security wpa2 personal is the only valid one.. and all the same password.
Test with a few clients and see if the results give you decent local speeds as well as better roaming.. once you decide which to do, then you will need to change all the clients.

  • Anyone Use Different Backup Software with Time Capsule

I love the concept of Time Machine + Time Capsule, but there are too many problems and I have wasted too many hours trying to get it to work properly. So...
Has anyone had success using different backup software (maybe Apple Backup) with Time Capsule?
I would love to go back in time and simply:
1-Plug my computer into the drive (wireless is fine too)
    2-Launch my backup software
    3-Backup

Really not sure. I've always just done bootable backups...
You CAN create a bootable backup onto a sparse disk image on an Airdisk, but of course it wouldn't really be bootable until the backup was cloned back directly to a drive. So I guess you could back up that way, and if you needed it you could restore back to your main HDD, from the sparse image, and the computer would be restored and bootable. I think.
My original goal was to have both Time Machine backups and SuperDuper clones ll being done over the Time capsule/Airdisks, but now (if I decide to get an AEBS or TC) I will likely only do the Time Machine backups over the wifi, and still have an occasional clone made to a drive plugged in via usb.
To your last comment though...if your only going to do the User folder, it may make as much sense to just use Time Machine, since you can restore/migrate from a TM backup. Although it may be smart to do a user folder backup using BOTH Time Machine and SuperDuper, for redundancy.
Sigh, always so many options, and usually doesn't work the way you want it to...

  • Use airport express wireless printing with time capsule

I want to add airport express to my time capsule network to take advantage of wireless printing. I have set my AE to join my existing wireless network and connected my printer to the USB port. I logged into AE through Airport Utility and clicked on the printer pane. It shows my usb printer is connected to the AE. Then I went to system preferences to set my print and fax settings to share over network.
I thought this is correct, but when I click print it tells me the printer is offline. Am I missing a step? I would connect the printer to my time capsule but I need my printer in a different part of the house. Thanks for you help!!

You have your printer installed at two different locations. To confirm, open System Preferences and then click Print & Fax.
You should see your printer listed twice in the printer list on the left.
One is your printing installed at your computer and the other is your printer installed at the AirPort Express.
When you open a document to print, you have to choose the printer that you want to use. You may still be choosing the printer at your computer. Look for the printer at the Express. If you intend to use the printer at the Express most of the time, you might want to make that your default printer so you don't have to select a device each time you print.
For more info on printing issues, see the Apple Printer Troubleshooting Guide.
Keep in mind that not all printers are compatible, even though they may appear connected to your device. If you work your way through the guide and still cannot print, then that's likely the explanation.

  • Network printing with time capsule doesn't work with OS X Lion

I have a canon printer which will print when it is set up and connected to my imac.  However when it is set up and connected to time capsule it will not print.  It thinks it has completed the job but it hasn't.
I think that this may have something to do with OS X Lion.
The printer is just new, I bought it as the old one was playing up - I had been unable to get the old one which was connected via the time capsule to print since installing OS X Lion but never put two and two together - I just assumed the the printer had eventually died!  So I bought a new one!  It seems to set up OK as it is recognised as being attached to the timecapsule but there is no out put.
Does anyone have any ideas as how to sort this out?

Solved (apparently): After reinstalling, iTunes 10.5 beta 3 appears to work.

  • Trying to Connect Wireless Epson Printer with Time Capsule

Greetings. I am a regular Mac user and using Mac for several years now. However, I am a new to network administration. I have a Linksys wireless router that syncs our 5 Macs (one iPad-1 iMac and three MacBook Pros), plus 4 Windows PC's we have in our network. I recently decided to purchase a Time Machine, and further our use of Apple technology in wireless devices. I want to back up all my computer's files to Time Machine and use the Airport Extreme functions of Time Machine while discontinuing the use of my LinkSys router. However, I can't get my Epson WorkForce 600 to wirelessly connect to Time Capsule in order to use the scanner & fax functions. Connecting the printer by USB enables the printer function, but disables all other functions of the printer (fax-scan, etc.).
I tried downloading new Epson drivers and couldn't get some of them to install. This time My iMac wouldn't install the .dmg files. I tried opening the .dmg file and installing. The pop up box requiring my administrator password, kept flashing when I tried to enter my password. Since I couldn't get the .dmg files to install, my plan to update Epson driver's didn't work. Question #1: I am looking for advice how to install these weird disk image files ?
I turned off my Time Capsule, re-connected the LinkSys to the cable modem and all my wireless functions work again, especially my printer. Sadly, no Time Capsule.
I read another discussion suggestion connecting both wireless devices together. I assume since I want to use Time Capsule that I set it up with the modem and connect the other router to it via one of the four ethernet connections. I didn't want to try this until I received further advice. I am hoping I can connect my LinkSys router to Time Capsule and use the printer through the LinkSys connection with all other computers on my network.
Question #2: How can I get my Time Capsule to find the Epson so I can use it again, or should I just use the LinkSys router connected to the printer?
Thank you in advance for help.

This sounds as if you are trying to use instructions that are more than 2 years old at this point, but you are using a new version of AirPort Utility Utility in Lion or Mountain Lion....which would not track or apply to the older instructions.
Can you confirm what operating system that you are using on the Mac that is being used to configure devices?
The new AirPort Express will connect directly to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection, correct?

  • 306 Error Printing with Time Capsule 2TB

I just upgraded from a 1st Generation Time Capsule (500GB) to a 4th Generation Time Capsule (2TB).  I have a Canon MP600 printer connected via USB to the Time Capsule.  In my previous setup, this worked flawlessly and other computers on the network could print to this device.  With the new setup, I'm receiving a 306 Error printing to the printer via the new Time Capsule.
    I have:
    Reset the printer system information.
Rest the TC to default settings, attached the USB for the printer, and restarted the device.
Tested the USB direct connection to my printer (works fine).
I feel like this has to be related to the new TC...wondering if I've got a setting mixed up.
Any help would be great - I've reviewed most of the postings related to this subject, but this one feels different as it involves an upgrade to new TC and I'm not trying to use a wireless printer.

First, restart your MacBook Pro and your Time Capsule. This solves the problem in most of the cases.
    If it doesn't work, see > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html

  • Remote print with time capsule

    Hello,
I setup the time capsule so that I have access from remote over the apple-id.
Connection and access to files on the time capsule works very well.
Now I would like to print a document remote over the time capsule.
Is it possible without direct connection of the printer to the time capsule?
The printer got an IP address by the time capsule and when I am not remote it is possible to print via air play.
    Thank you!
    Regards, PK

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275 (note - older article)
Have you tried using Airport Utility to see if you can see the Time Capsule?
FWIW - I have 4 Time capsules on an in-house ethernet network and they all work as they are supposed to.
Pjot84 - Is local network hooked directly to the computer?  Probably my dense head, but I'm not sure I understand you.

  • What is the best HP printer with Time Capsule

What is the best HP printer (all-in-one) to use with an Airport Time Capsule?

Kappy is dead on correct about Bridge Mode as a requirement for the Time Capsule.
Do you know how to check to see if the Time Capsule is configured this way?
Next question.....you really should not try to have two wireless networks....one Arris and another Time Capsule.....unless it is absolutely necessary. Two wireless routers in close proximity can create wireless interference effects that can cause problems with either...or both...networks.
Best to turn off the wireless on one router to keep the chances of wireless interference between routers minimized.
Are both the Arris and Time Capsule providing wireless signals?

  • CONNECTING MY WIRELESS PRINTER WITH TIME CAPSULE

Cant seem to get it to link up, any suggestions.?

I have the same printer but have always used it on a wired network - I have a couple of problems that recur with it - sometimes I have to turn it off, unplug it and reinitialize it for no obvious reason - have you tried that?
And if I'm gone for a while sometimes it gets a new IP address and I have to find it again for my computers
Have you gotten the manual out and seen if there is any help there?
Maybe as a test you should move it near the Time Capsule and hook it up via wired ethernet and see how things go that way
I have not been able to scan with it since upgrading to Leopard - have not spend much time on that - it may be something really simple (or maybe not)

  • Setting up wireless printer with Time Capsule

I've just replaced my original Time Capsule after it had a terminal power failure.
The replacement Time Capsule is working okay as a backup and I have set up my wireless network again, but now I can't print using my Canon MX860 printer, which had been working well with my original Time Capsule and wireless network.
Any advice how I can fix this issue would be much appreciated - thanks.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Your post did not tell us what you may have already tried, whether you are trying to connect the printer using wireless only, or whether it will be connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
If you are trying to connect using wireless, you'll need to "re-install" the printer again using Canon's setup utility just like you did the first time.
Likewise, if you are using USB to connect, you'll need to open System Preferences on your Mac and click Print & Fax to install the printer.

  • Networking Mac's with Time Capsule

I'm having trouble networking my two MacBook's using my Time Capsule as the server. Any tips?

I'm having a similar problem. My network worked fine for a long time. Recently, I went on to a couple of machines and deleted a number of files to try to regain hard disk space. I didn't think I deleted anything important, but afterward, machines were not recognizing each other. A couple of the files I deleted were Hewlett-Packard files from the Startup folder. I realized the need for tham afterward, and reinstalled the printer drivers.
However, while the printer is now working, it is only working with the machine attached to it. The other machines which accessed it over the network can not do so anymore.
The weirdest is, after resetting everything, I was able to log in to my Mac Book from my Mac Mini, but I couldn't do the reverse. When trying to connect to the Mini from the Book, it timed out. I tried directly using Go to...Server with the Mini's IP address, no luck. I made sure "File Sharing" was turned on both machines.
At one point I was in the sharing preferences and noted, on the Mini, that a "Permitted Users" list existed. One had a dim network icon with my name "Daniel", which is similar, but not same as, name of the Mac Book ("Daniel's Mac Book (2)"). As a test, I deleted it, and, sure enough, I could no longer log into the Book from the Mini. I hit the + sign to re-add "Daniel", but wasn't able to because the Mini would not recognize the Book anymore.
All the computers recognize the Time Capsule just fine, they all access the internet just fine, they all have File Sharing turned on, they just won't recognize each other.
This is an important problem because we have only one printer, hooked up directly to the Mini. All our printing is done over the network through the Mini.
I've done hard reset (unplugged Time Capsule), soft reset (through Airport Utility) and reset manually all Time Capsule settings - still no recognition computer to computer.
    Any ideas for next steps?

  • WIreless Printing with Time Capsule.

    Peripheral info:
    MacBookPro 17" early 09; 10.5.8
    Printer: Canon Pixma MP480
Time Capsule Dual-Band 7.4.2 firmware, uptodate AirPort Utility
For some reason when adding the printer using my 17" uMBP it sees the printer but no drivers specifically attached to the printer...i tried searching the built in drivers for the printer but no luck.
I dont ever plan on using the copying or scanning functionality of this printer on this comptuer and i dont really feel the need to isntall the included software, so im wondering if the drivers for printing via Wifi/Time Capsule are included or do i have to actually install the drives for this printer for it to work over the network?
With a printer sepcifically provided by apple that illustrates and advertises just a plug and play wihtout install excess drivers...
    thanks!

    Hi Frank,
It looks like you can get the driver from Canon's website without all of the bloatware that usually comes with the "suite."
    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=2610&m odelid=17160#DownloadDetailAct
Bonjour will typically see the printer when it's connected via the TC but you'll see need the drivers to be present on the machine before you're able to print to the device. I recommend setting up the printer to where it works via USB when wired to the machine and then move it over to the TC.

  • Epson CX9400 won't print with Time Capsule

Seems like there are plenty of Leopard printing issues, so I'll add mine to the mix.
Just upgraded my MacBookPro to 10.5.6 and it connects fine to the Time Capsule and such. The Epson Stylus CX9400Fax pops right up in Bonjour. Newly updated all drivers. When I print there are no error messages, just a normal que that shows the job as completed, but of course it's not.
This system prints fine locally through the USB. Unfortunately there is no Ethernet on the printer to try another workaround.
System prints fine if I boot in 10.4.11.
Epson is no help. They don't even try to suggest anything. All of the FAQs here don't help either.
The MacBookPro prints fine with my network printers in the office.
Leopard not talking to Epson's newest driver via Airport. Am I just out of luck?

You have made no mention of how Time Capsule is connected. For the initial backup, you should be connected using an ethernet connection. It would be a fresh, new backup. Did your setup of TC go smoothly? I assume the network is all setup and that the TC disk sharing is enabled.

  • Using my Apple Tv with Time Capsule

I would know if it is possible to store movies and photos on Time Capsule, not in a folder in the back up folder, and displays them to the Apple TV, use it as an external HD. How can I do this?

You would need to treat the Time Capsule as a network drive location storing iTunes media - the compuer running iTunes would need to be on with iTunes running.
No way currently to get AppleTv to see TC without iTunes acting as intermediary.
