Use old AiportExtreme as relay to extend WIFI from Time Capsule

Hi
I have an 24' 3.06 iMac running on Leopard and it is WIFI networked through a brand new dual band Time Capsule 1TB (TC). The setting up worked fine using the updated AriPort Utilities (APU) coming with the time capsule.
I also have an Old iMac 17' which is for the time being ethernet networked to the TC.
I would like now to move my old mac to another room. Unfortunately it has no Airport card so I would like to use my old UFO shaped Base Station AirPort Extreme (BSAPE), that I was using happily last week as my WIFI hub. My plan is to have it as a relay station to pick up the network from the TC, extend the signal to the other side of the house for my iPod and connect the Old G4 to it via ethernet connection. The (BSAPE) got reset using a pen at the back, and the APU has recognised it as a base station with a six didgit alphanumeriacl code! Ther is a orange light in fornt of the BSAPE icon. So far so good.
I tried then to set it up as a relay, first AU asked me to swap device. I did so and tried to reset the base station. Once all done the TC started blinking was blinking. What did go wrong? Is there a guide I could use to get it working. The TC is in bridge mode.
Thank you for your help

Welcome to the discussions!
You will need to configure both the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme to participate in a WDS (Wireless Distribution System). The Time Capsule will be configured as a base station and the AirPort Extreme will be configured as a remote, not a relay. A relay is a device located between a base station and a remote. So, you would need a minimum of 3 devices in a WDS to configure a relay.
There is a step by step guide on pages 42-43 in the Airport Networks Guide for configuring a WDS.

  • Can I reuse my old Belkin wireless router as an extender to extend wifi from Time Capsule?

I plan to buy the new Time Capsule and use it as my wireless router. Would it be possible to use my existing Belkin Play router as an extender of the "new" wireless netword provided by the Time Capsule?

Apple designed the "extend a wireless network" function as a proprietary feature to only work with other Apple routers, so it would be extremely unlikely that a Belkin product would be compatible with the Time Capsule if you want to extend the network wirelessly.
If you can connect the Belkin router to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection, you should be able to configure the Belkin router to provide more wireless coverage that way.

  • Cannot extend wifi from Time Capsule

    Hi all
I have a time capsule (TC) in bridge mode connected to a livebox router. Internet access is fine, wirelessly and wired from the TC. I have disabled the wireless from the livebox router, to keep things simple.
I was hoping to extend the wifi through the house, using 2 airport expresses (AEXS), one as a relay, one as a remote.
I have ticked create wireless network in airport utility, on the TC, and extend wireless network on the AEXS, but cannot get the network propagated from the AEXS. The AEXS's are set to pick up the lower frequency channel from the TC, and I understand that this has a longer range than the 5 GHz band.
I also have broadband running through the mains circuit (we call this homeplug in the UK) but connecting the AEXS to the homeplug ethernet socket does not work either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

Here's how to do what you want with the furthest Express (AX):
You may be able to simply change some settings on the AX, or if that is not possible, you'll need to hold the reset button in on the device until you see the amber light begin to flash more quickly.
I prefer to setup devices by connecting an ethernet cable from the Mac directly to the device...the AX in this case, but you can also configure using wireless only if you prefer.
On the AX, Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons. Your setup should look like this:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your Time Capsule (TC) network
Radio Mode = Probably 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) would be a good choice here, but you could choose 802.11n 5 GHz if all of your devices are capable of connecting to 5 GHz.
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your TC
Wireless Password = Same setting as your TC network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings. This will provide you with extended wireless coverage and devices will be able to stay on the same wireless network as they move around and connect to the access point with the strongest signal.

  • Best configuration to extend wifi with Time Capsule & Airport Express

In my house I have a Fritzbox wifi router on the ground floor as my primary internet access.  I have an ethernet cable going to the 3rd floor study where the Fritzbox signal is relatively weak.  I purchased a Time Capsule as a backup device, but also wanted to extend the Fritzbox wifi network by plugging the ethernet cable in to the TC.  I was not successful in extending the network, so I had to create a new network.  When moving from downstairs to upstairs, my iphone keeps the connection to the (now weak) wifi network and I have to manually change to the (stronger) TC wifi network.
Additionally, I used to be able to successfully extend the downstairs wifi using my Airport Express (and also managed to have my speakers plugged into this for wireless usage), but do not want to additionally complicate my set-up.
So, what is the best way to connect the following equipment, ideally with the same network name, to ensure I always use the strongrst signal automatically:
Third floor:          iMac,    Macbook,   Time Capsule,  Airport Express
Ethernet cable from ground floor to 3rd floor
Ground floor:     Fritzbox wifi connected to internet

You must configure the Bridge Mode setting as the very last step before you Update the settings, otherwise the setting will change automatically.
In other words, you can change the setting to Bridge Mode, but if you make any other changes before you click Update, the Bridge Mode setting will not take effect.
Or, if you see any error messages about DHCP conflicts or Double NAT....the AirPort is not in Bridge Mode...even though you might think it is. Check the settings again.
will I still be able to set up an additional 5GHz network in parallel?
    Yes

  • Unable to connect to my wifi from Time capsule

Hello am trying to conect mi iphone 4s to my wifi account from time capsule, my macbook connect perfectly also my ipad, but my iphone aways copme with teh unable to connect, i did the reset network, and doesnt work

Put the TC in bridge before you plug it in.. ie do the setup in isolation to the rest of the network..
I would also start a new wireless name on the TC so it is different to the cable router..
If you want to be exacting also set wireless channels so the cable router is set to say channel 1 and the TC set to 11 for 2.4ghz. Then plug it in.. you will have no trouble as the TC will get an ip address as part of the existing networking.. then extend the wireless using the extreme.

  • Want my DVR to use wifi from Time Capsule

We have two wireless networks in our house which seems stupid.  Until now, we've shrugged it off and ignored the wifi created by the fios router and use a wired Time Capsule to create a wifi network that we use.  Now, there's a new feature where we could watch tv in other rooms on our iphone, ipads, etc.  That's great except the TV is on the wifi that came with the FIOS router instead of the wifi the rest of us in the house are using.
So, I googled about it to see what I could do to combine the networks.  It turns out you cannot extend the fios wifi with the Time Capsule because the Apple Airport devices have features for extending networks that the fios wifi doesn't have.  I found I could turn off the fios wifi but then the DVR wouldn't have an internet connection.  So, I thought, I'll change the DVR ot use the Time Capsule wifi, which I'd prefer because we want to keep that network.  I checked the DVR and found the home network settings -- and it turned out to be a place where you can see the settings, but you can't change the settings there, but there has to be a way to set it up somewhere, no?
Ideally, I'd turn off the FIOS wifi and change the DVR over to use our existing home network.  At the moment, we will have to switch networks, depending on what we want to do.  We use the Time Capsule for backups, to share files, for airtunes, etc.  It also extends thru the entire house whereas the FIOS one doesn't.  If we wanted to use the new features to watch programs from ipads, etc, we'd have to switch them over to the other network while we did.  It's just a bit of a pain.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Many folks have two or more wireless networks in a single dwelling (including me).  It doesn't seem stupid to me and if there's a problem, one or both wireless networks can be disabled in the router or Time Capsule settings.

Maybe it's just a terminology issue, but none of the Verizon STBs or DVRs has wireless capability.  Presently these devices only connect to the network using coax, although this may change in the future.

No.  As in my earlier comment, DVRs and STBs connect to the network via coax and are fed IP addresses via the FiOS router.  That's how they get Guide data, VOD, etc.
    liz4cps wrote:

The DVR will always connect to the network via the FiOS router.  However there is nothing to stop you from disabling the wireless radio in the FiOS router, and having all your wireless devices (but definitely not your DVRs or STBs) connect to your preferred wireless network.  You can use whatever security features, SSIDs, and passwords you desire on the alternate device, and have all your portable devices connect there.
I hope this is clear, so please review the above and come back with further questions if necessary.  Good luck.

  • Limited wifi from time capsule

My ipod & laptop connect to the wifi but my peripherals cannot.  The Time Capsule I am using  is 3+ yrs old.  What could be the problem?

Make sure the TC is bridged. In ML go to the NAT area and make sure it says bridge.
The problem with running two wireless devices next to each other is they can interfere.. I am assuming you have the TC plugged in by ethernet.. if this is close to the Hub, then turn wireless off in one or the other.
    Or
Set it up so that wireless is on different channels.
In the TC.. since you don't have pure apple.. set TC name and wireless name to short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric. Apple names with spaces are wrong.
But you can be sneaky.. give the TC the same wireless name.. ie SSID as the HH.
Same security setting.. wpa2 personal.. and same passkey. But they need to be different channels.
Fix the wireless channel for 2.4ghz. I recommend locking both devices which are probably on auto.
Fix HH to channel 1 and fix TC to 13.. since you are in UK. Sometimes 11 is better due to American drivers for wireless not working in the Europe area properly.
Now give a different name to the 5ghz on the TC. So for devices close to the TC they can get much faster connection on 5ghz.. but not everything works.
    See how that goes.

  • Advice to extend range from Time Capsule - wireless and ethernet with Airport Express and Airport Extreme

Current wireless network is Time Capsule (connected to a Cisco router, 1GB switch to servers and printer 1) to Airport Express (wireless) and to Airport Extreme (wireless). Distance means poor signal at the Extreme which has 2 printers (ethernet cables) and an iMac (wireless)
Solution is to connect the Extreme to the Time Capsule via Cat 6 ethernet cable
How do I configure the TC and the Extreme?
I will keep the Express for a wireless extension to the TC

Wired Ethernet from the TC to the AirPort Extreme will result in much better performance.  It sounds as if you are not configuring the AirPort Extreme correctly.
Please try the following steps carefully:
Unplug the Ethernet cable from the AirPort Exteme if it is not already unplugged. With the AirPort Extreme powered on, hold in the reset button on the Extreme for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Extreme to restart
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the Extreme.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click on AirPort Extreme.
The example below displays an AirPort Express. You will see AirPort Extreme.
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Extreme will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Exterme and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
That's it.  Pretty simple.  Things should be working fine now.

  • Why is my wifi from time capsule intermittent

Wi-Fi looking for networks, then onto my network, then searching again. I've powered down the Time Capsule and restarted it. Installed all upgrades. I tried taking it off Auto channel, but to no avail.

The issue seems to be Lion.. but what particular part of the setup is messing up I am not sure.
But at least try the following.
Reset the TC to defaults holding down the reset button for about 10sec.
With the TC plugged in by ethernet, rename the TC itself and the wireless to SMB standard.. no spaces, no special characters.. short. Name 5ghz differently to 2.4ghz. Passwords are the same but 8-12 characters is sufficient unless you have an ICBM silo in your backyard. (And TC is storing the launch sequence).
Set the wireless to fixed, a/n - b/g
Fix the channels.. for 2.4ghz, in most areas the channels that do not overlap are 1, 6, 11 (in some places 13) test with each one.
Fix N wireless to 40 if you can.. certainly one of the lower channels if possible.
To do all that you probably need to download airport utility 5.6 for lion.

  • Problem with airport express extending wifi from extreme

My setup is an airport extreme wired to the internet with two iMacs connected by wire and an airport express to extend wifi from the extreme to the further parts of my house.  When originally installed about a year ago this arrangement worked perfectly, but I noticed a few weeks ago that neither my iphone, ipad, nor my MBP 13" is connecting to the aitport express anymore and the network extension is not working as intended.
Last night I investigated the isue and found that the express is connected wirelessly to my extreme because when I wired my MBP to the express and turned off the wireless connection it could still reach the internet.  But, even with the express sitting plugged in next to my iPhone I could not get it to connect to the express - it always uses the extreme and while I'm in range there is no problem.  The problem is that my house is old and the wals tend to cause problems with reception and I can't get wifi in the garden and some parts of the house.
I have the express and the extreme configured to allow access only by the client macs that I have provided and it looks like the two devices share this information when they are in extend mode (but not sure about that).  When I set up the system I added the aitports mac addresses to the approved list in the access control screen, which seemed to be necessary then though I removed them (the airport mac addresses) fromt he list last night to see what effect this had and biefly the airport did connect to my MBP.  But after returning it to its location where it usually is I have not been able to reconnect to it.
In brief;  I have an airport express extending an airport extreme wifi, it used to work, but now all wifi clients will only connect to the master.  I have a suspicion that a recent airport update has caused this (both airports are up-to-date) but can't be sure.  I have the express correctly configured to extend the wifi of the extreme as it was originally working.
One thing I have noticed - I had the express set to use a fixed IP by setting 'static' in the internet screen - this is not the current setting (it's reverted to DHCP) and I cannot force it to update to and remain set to static.
Does anyone know how I can restore the correct functioning of the express as an extension of the wifi network?
    Thanks
    Damon

Perform the Factory Default Reset one more time. Hold the reset button until the amber light has been blinking rapidly for 8-10 seconds before you release the reset button
Run the setup wizard, and wait for screen similar to this to appear, then click on Other Options:
Select the Add to an existing network option, then click Next and follow the prompts.
If you are still having difficulty, try running the setup utility on an iPhone or iPad, since Yosemite has a number of bugs in the setup process.

You likely first configured the AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network" using wireless only, correct?
If yes, you cannot then connect the AirPort Express using Ethernet....that will crash your network.
The Express must be configured to "create a wireless network".  AirPort Utility will do this for you automatically, but you will first need to perform a Factory Default Reset or Hard Reset on the AirPort Express and then start over with the configuration again.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the Express before you open AirPort Utility. Post back if you need more tips on how to set this up.

  • My ATV will no longer stay connected to WiFi. Every time I want to use it I have to setup the WiFi from scratch!!!

My ATV will no longer stay connected to my home WiFi network. Every single time I want to use it I need to set up WiFi from scratch all over again. I'm considering dumping it as my Roku box has no issues. I'm an Apple loyalist though and want the ATV for playing my large music collection.
    Any suggestions?

    It's a 1G ATV, 160Gig.
The wireless is an Access Point w/WPA encryption and all DHCP is done by a remote wired router in a closet. Resetting each has had no effect on it. I don't see a setting anywhere on my ATV that I can change to turn off periodic standby mode.
I actually replaced an Airport Extreme w/ this D Link AP & it's worked great for every other device. I had the exact same issue with the Airport Extreme although it seems like after the latest ATV SW upgrade, it does it every day. Previously it would only do it occasionally.

  • TS1398 The WEP password to access WiFI from Time Warner is 12 numbers and letters plus 14 zeros.  Can I expand the available space in the space for entering passwords

The WEP Password to access wifi from Time Warner cable is 12 numbers and letters followed by 14zeros.  The available space to input password is unequal to the task?  Time Warner advised to call Apple.  Any one with a suggestion on how to either 'customize' WEP or expand available password input space?  Better ideaS?

wjosten - I was using a WEP password of greater than 13 characters with no problem.
Mondayblues - Are you saying that you cannot set your own password for your router/modem? You should be able to access it from an ethernet connected computer and change the password to suit yourself.  If it's not more than about 4 years old, you should be able to use WPA instead of WEP, which is much more secure.  Google "time warner modem  yourmodel" to find the user manual and the URL to access the modem.

Thank you William for your most helpful response. I shall deal first with your three comments:
Not being tech savvy, I would not have been able to make that call myself but it sure makes sense.
I have updated my profiles as you suggest.  Excellent tip.
This guidance is good.  Being new to Apple Support Communities, I did not find the field a labeling and guidance to be clear, a point you make.  Now I know, I shall do as you say and will use the small slim box as a header to the full message/question, which will place in the larger box below.
Secondly, I come to your question: Did anything change on your Mac recently, such as replacing the disk or main logic board?
The answer is “yes”.  Two events have happened both of which concerned the Time Capsule:
The telephone company, with which I have access to the Internet and I have my email account, installed a new modum.  After the technician left I had to try and get the Time Capsule and WiFi working again which ended with my having to call Apple for technical assistance.  The Apple technician walked me through a number of procedural steps which effectively re-set up the Time Capsule.
Access to the Internet failed and the telephone company reset the modum.  I had to call Apple again.  This time the technician did not reset the Time Capsule but walked me through a number of steps tha included renaming the “site”  (not the Time Capsule).
Another piece of information that may be relevant is that the MacBook Pro uses the Time Capsule for backup.  Everything appears to be in order.  When I enter the Time Capsule for this laptop I have backups going back for a long time.
Also, I do a weekly backup of the two computers onto another external hard drive using the Time Machine software.  So I have another backup of both computers.

If you are syncing using iCloud, try going to System Preferences/iCloud (computers) and checking Safari. If it is checked, try deselecting it, wait 10-15 seconds, and then check it again.
