  • Cable to connect old iMac as second screen for new iMac

Just bought the new iMac 27" with thunderbolt port.  I understand I can hook up my old iMac (24" Mid 2007) and use it as second monitor.  My challenge is confirming that, and then figuring out which cable to use.
The manual says the old iMac has a "Mini-DVI video out port", making it sound like it won't accept input.  True?
If it will indeed accept input, what cable do I use to connect the two Macs?
If indeed I can't use the second iMac, I'll purchase a separate monitor.  What should I look for in monitors that will easily attach to the thunderbolt-only new iMac?  I won't be buying the Apple monitor.
Thanks for any help in advance.
    Bob

Most new monitors will support standard DVI and VGA connections. Some may support Mini-DVI ports. That's about all I can tell you.
As for other factors I would look at monitor reviews - as many as you can - for the size and resolutions in which you are interested. There are a lot of products out there. You might try first doing a Google search to learn more about the meanings of the various specs the manufacturers provide so you might wade through the smoke and mirrors in search of meaningful information.

  • Use older 2008 iMac as second monitor for new iMac

    Hi all,
I have one of these older machines that has no real purpose
      http://support.apple.com/kb/sp485
but would serve me very well as a second monitor for my brand spanking new iMac.
The specs seem to note that there is a video output - but I'm not seeing anything about video IN.
Is it possible to use this older iMac as a monitor?

that looks cool, and there is a free trial.
I am not keen on using the WiFi to do this - my old iMac has firewire but the new one doesn't.
Besides using the ludicrously expensive Thunderbolt <-> Firewire 800 convertor
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD464ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter
is there any other way to create a wired connection between these devices? I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a USB <-> USB network connection.

  • Extra screen for my iMac

    Hi
I've got a Powerbook running OSx 10.4.11 with a power PC g4, and an iMac running OSx 10.5.5 with an intel Core 2 duo.
I want to connect the laptop to the iMac just so that the extra screen can be used and i have a larger work area and the one mouse can flip between screens. Is this possible? i can do it on my PC at work but i've tried ethernet and firewire and it isn't working out.
If anyone has any ideas that would be gratefully received.
    Thanks

If I correctly understand what you want, you'll need software called Screen Recycler. Install it on both Macs and it will route the video signal through Ethernet, making Mac #2 as a monitor for Mac #1.
If what you meant was to control both Macs but each is running independently, then you'd need Teleport.

  • Using old time machine back ups for new mac

I have upgraded to a new intel macbook pro from a g4 powerbook. I was able to move my files and apps to the macbook pro. How do I get time machine to use the old back up data on my new laptop. I have selected the hard drive that has the back up data from my powerbook but the macbook does not pull up the info.

First a couple of things you're posting in the iMac forum not the MacBook Pro forum. In addition there is a Time Machine Forum. I'd recommend reading the Time Machine FAQ's there. You can find the TM forum at:

  • Unable to use my MacBook as second screen for my iMac with Thunderbolt connection.

    Someone who can help me?

You can use the iMac as a second display, not the other way around.

  • I recently purchased a new iMac with an external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  Comments?  Help?

I recently purchased a new iMac with an 1 Terrabyte external drive.  I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac.  I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern.  May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure?  Comments?  Help?

If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

  • Why can't I use a Thunderbolt iMac as a screen for an TV or a gaming console?

Is there any hopes for a device/adapter that would make it possible to use an Thunderbolt-equipped iMac as a screen for other devices? It worked with DisplayPort, why wouldn't it work with Thunderbolt? Is it just a business political decision?

  • Can a 27" iMac late 2012 be used as a target monitor (screen) for a Raspberry Pi ?

Can a 27" iMac late 2012 be used as a target monitor (screen) for a Raspberry Pi ?
If yes, please describe how it can be done?
    Thanks

Nope, you are describling Target Display Mode. Please read Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and you will see the other device (in your case a Raspberry Pi) has to have a Thunderbolt port that supports TDM.

Is there posibel to use Ipad4 WI-FI as extra screen for a Iphon4?

Sorry but no. The iPhone doesn't support dual screens to any device, much less an iPad.

  • Old iMac won't migrate to new iMac

Have a iMac running Mavericks and i have tried to use migration to transfer files to new iMac running Yosemite the New iMac sees the old iMac and assigns a code number but the old iMac can't find the new iMac. What could be causing this.

Thanks for the advise, but I choose to install from my Time Machine Backup. The only difference is now I have two logins, the transferred original one from Mavericks and the new one using Yosemite's setup. I really don't consider this a problem and I'm just happy that I have an excellent fast running operating system. Man is that Intel 3.5 quad core i5 processor fast and it has a turbo boost to 3.9 GHz.

  • Software Update Server - Deleting old updates to make space for new ones

On Page 77 of the SystemImage_and_SW_Updatev10.4.pdf Apple recommends "deleting old updates to make space for new ones". I've looked and searched and yet to find a way to do this. The Server Admin interface and the command line options I've looked into don't appear to provide this option.
So I actually tried stopping the server, moving the updates from /usr/share/swupd/html to another location, starting the server, the server wouldn't start, moving the files back again, the server still won't start.
    1. Does anyone know how you're supposed to "Delete old updates to make space for new ones"
    2. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get Software Update service running again?

Can a LCD screen for a iMac G5 can be replace?

Thanks for the reply.  Soon after I posted, I found that solution.  However, the Airplay feature is not on my IMac.
I am very disappointed with the Sales and Service at the local Mac Store.  I was very clear about how I intended to use my network of computers and devices when I purchased the package.  It took two visits to the Support desk for someone to provide me with the Apple TV component.  And now I find that I don't have the Airplay feature on my IMac.
