Use Prolific based USB-to-Serial with Solaris 10

Hi all,
I currently use a Dynex DX-UBDB9 adapter, which is a Prolific PL-2303 based USB-to-Serial adaptor and it seem to be working OK in almost all situations (with Sun Ray, my laptop, and so on).
I put it in the USB port #0 on a Sun Fire V240, and the server saw it:
# cd /dev/cua
# ls -al
total 18
drwxr-xr-x   2 root     root         512 Jan  8 14:17 .
drwxr-xr-x  17 root     sys         5120 Jan  8 14:37 ..

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root          51 Dec 22 10:20 b -> ../../devices/pci@1e,600000/isa@7/serial@0,2e8:b,cuIt is appearing as the "0" up here. I followed the procedure on the Sun site for using a "tip" connection (the procedure is for a Edgeport device, and is described at: http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/USB-Faq.html#Serial point #4), and I added the following line to the "/etc/remote" file:
u0:\
:dv=/dev/cua/0:br#9600:el=^C^S^Q^U^D:ie=%$:oe=^D:but I'm not able to use it for a "tip" connection yet. I get this error:
# tip u0
tip: /dev/cua/0: No such device or address
all ports busyIs there someone here who could help me out getting a functionning "tip" session using my Prolific based USB-to-Serial adapter?
Thanks in advance!!

Hi Martin and thanks for the reply. This is very strange to me, because when in use on a Sun Ray station, I can use this adapter - from my Sun Ray station - to make a tip connection!! But when I connect it directly to the V240 server, I'm not able to.

  • Lenovo X131e doesn't work with Prolific PL2303 based USB to Serial Adapter and Windows 7 x64

This is sort of a bug report. A Lenovo X131e with Windows 7 x64 and the PL2303 driver including 1.6, 1.61 and 1.7 will not successfully install the driver - Windows always reports "Driver Install Failed" on plug in to USB 3 or USB2 ports. However, putting a USB2.0 hub inbetween the USB to Serial Adapter and either USB port type makes the adapter work fine. This was not the case with the X130e. I'm not sure where to report this beyond this posting, but more of an FYI.

If the USB can be used for other equipment,
That may be compatibility issues for USB and Prolific PL2303.
Don't plug Serial Adapter when installing the driver,
Ofter installation, Connect serial adapter to see whether it is working normally.

  • Can I use other Apple USB Power Adapters with iPad

I am looking for a spare  Apple Power Adapter to charge my iPad.  I have an iPad (3rd Generation), which came with a 10W USB Power Adapter, Model A1357, output 5.1V. 2.4A USB Power Adapter.  I have two other Apple Power Adapters 1) iPod Power Adapter, Model A1070, output 13V, .62A Firewire Power Adapter, 2) USB Power Adapter, Model A 1265, Output 5V, 1A,and  3) USB Car Adapter,   Can either of the latter three Power Adapters be used to charge my iPad

Technically, yes, but they will trigger the 'not charging' because they're not giving out the 10W that your device wants. And charging with them will take significantly longer than the ipad charger.
I'd only use them as a 'shucks, left my iPad charger at home and I'm in a pinch' situation.
Your best bet would be to either get another iPad charger, or if you're trying to use one adapter for several devices, use the iPad one for the rest of your stuff.

  • Using the MXL USB.006 microphone with logic express 7.2.3

When I have the USB audio codec selected in logic express 7.2.3 (macbook pro, intel dual core) I cant get any sound from my speakers on the laptop, or the headphones I use with the laptop headphone jack. I can record vocals but can't hear playback. If I switch to the built-in audio driver for the macbook pro, I can hear the vocal I recorded on the MXL, but with the built-in driver selected, I can't record with the mic.
Is there a solution for this?

    Hi md,
I think if you look up Aggregate device in help it's what you need. You create one in Audio MIDI set up which allows for input via the USB microphone, and output through built in audio. Then Select it in Mac Sound Preferences.
    Good lck,

  • USB to Serial port adapter - Mac thinks  it's a modem

I’m trying to connect my Mac’s USB port to a Sony Beta SP recorder's Serial Port using a generic USB to Serial adapter which uses the Prolific PL-2303 chip.
I’m using the latest Prolific Universal driver, but when I plug in the USB cable I get a message that a ‘new network device has been detected’ and suggesting that I use System Preferences to set it up. But in System Preferences it seems to think the USB to Serial adapter is a modem and is looking for a phone number and other configuration data.
Does anyone know how to get it to work as just a serial communication device to my Sony’s serial port? If I get it working I'll be connecting it to an RS232 to RS422 adapter to talk to the Sony port.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Andy.
I'll have a go again. It was late last night when I was trying to set it up, so maybe a fresh brain will have more success. I did try to 'Cancel' the network preference window that opened, but got the impression that it would not work unless I did 'something'. Someone else told me I could cancel that message permanently within System Preferences, so I'll try that too. Yet another bit of advice I got was that I would have to install 'MacPorts' and run something called 'Minicom' to set up the serial parameters. Windows was so simple by comparison
As a non-techie (at least in all these software and protocol issues) I'm more than a little confused.

  • Using NI VISA to control serial relay card

    Hi
I am using a relay card to control the operation of a pneumatic machine. The relay card has an FDTI chip and uses an integrated USB to serial convertor. It came from eBay (see link). The card works fine but I am struggling with the VISA code in my vi (see attached library).
The card switches a relay when a command from 1 to 8 is sent to it. I.e. if you write 1 to the serial port, the card will switch on relay 1. If you then write 1 again, the relay will switch off.
so my vi generates a character pulse from 1 to 8 to control the relays. The first element of the resulting array is checked. If it is non zero, the character is written to the serial port.
Ideally, the case structure then switches to "read mode" where is checks which relays are on using the VISA read vi. The relay states are written to the shift register and then the case structure switches to the default case of 0 where it clears the buffers.
The e-stop button reads which relays are on and switches all of them off when enabled.
The problem is that the read function does not work.Everytime a relay is enabled, an error is thrown up when the read mode is enabled. (I do not know the error code but can find out this next week when I am back at work). I know that the read function does work as I can read the card in another vi.
Can anyone suggest a better way of coding the VISA read and write functions to avoid getting an error everytime the program tries to read from the card? I am new to VISA (I normally just use daqmx devices),
I suspect that the vi is not allowing enough time for the read function to grab all the bytes from the card and is therefore giving an error. I had to slow the loop down with the time delay to avoid getting errors from the VISA write vi.
Is there a way to run the VISA rear vi until it reads all bytes from the card?
Any help would be greaty appreciated.
    Thanks. John

the warning is typical.  I often supress (clear) this warning when reading "number of bytes" instead of until "termination character" and I'll supress the expected warning "Termination char recieved - more data may be available" if  I've enabled termination characters.   All it means is that you asked for 8 bytes and got 8 bytes but you don't know how many bytes were there (it was at least 8.)
The Timeout error means that less than 8 bytes were available in the 1second you waited.  There could be several reasons for this and each affects your code differently.
The equipment hasn't sent data lately:  in this case you just need to read less often or peek into the buffer (property> bytes at port) to avoid buffer underflow/overflow.  Or set the device to produce data more often.  With your current code your outer while loop timing is dependant whether or not the VISA call timedout or read 8 bytes.  You may need to change to a different arcetechure if it is important to have tight control of the DAQmx task timings.
The latency of the FTDI driver is delaying sending the bytes.  Unlikely that the 16 mSec is causing a 1 sec TMO error but if it is DECREASE the latencey timer to solve this.  Increasing it would only make it worse.  2mSec would be better than 16.
Without knowing how the equipment is supposed to work its pretty hard to say one way or the other that the TMO error is "bad" ar the normal consequence of an expected (or predictable) scarcity of data availablity

  • Thinkpad USB Port Replicator with Digital Video - extended monitor shows only mouse icon

    Hi,
I have been using my Thinkpad USB Port Replicator with Digital Video for quite a long time with my previous employer laptop. I recently switched job and got a new laptop (Dell XPS 3, Win 8.1). While installing/paring this laptop with the port replicator, I had some issues e.g. extended monitor not getting identified etc. I updated the drivers and now I am able to identify the extended monitor. But the extended monitor shows only the mouse icon and nothing else. I have upto date Intel HD graphics drivers installed in the laptop. Intel's Graphics control panel doesn't show the extend option for the USB monitor, but able to still move the mouce icon to the extended monitor.
Any help/pointers to fix this issue is highly appreciated.

I have the exact same problem on my W510. Everything but the screen Works. I cannot however do duplicate screens. That would help a Little bit, so I could use the big monitor instead of just the laptop.
    Please fix this Lenovo!

  • Solving Prolific PL-2303 USB to Serial Comm Port installation issues

    Hello everybody,
More and more machines are comming without Parallel and serials ports, they are comming with USB external ports only.
Some have the RS-232 and Parallel headers in the motherboard, and that should last for about a year I think.
At any rate, the issue I was facing is the following:
    (a) Installing Prolific PL-2303 USB to Serial Comm Port on Windows XP Pro SP3 works OK and system runs fine. there are some capacity issues regarding the buffer size, but that is another post.
    (b) Installing on WEPOS 1.1 SP3 on some motherboards (Older ones) that have at least the Parallel headers and a serial port, the device also works as with (a)
    (c) Installing on WEPOS 1.1 SP3 with a machine with only external USB's (no parallel / serial port or headers). The installation process runs OK. but when the device
is plugged I get the following error message:
"An error ocurred during the installation of the device"
"A service Installation section in this INF is invalid"
    (d) Installing on POSReady 2009. I get the same as with (c)
This is how I solved, after many frustrating reboots with the same message about the INF section and multiple Prolific drivers tried.  I started digging windows:
    (1) Find the setupapi.log and read it, if the OS is a fresh install it will not be too long.
    (2) Read this:
    #-166 Device install function: DIF_SELECTBESTCOMPATDRV.

    (3) So it was the serenum.sys file that Windows needed to find in the ..\system32\drivers folder. I got the serenum.sys from one of the temporary folders created by the installation process.
(3a) So, I think that windows installs this sys file if it recognizes the motherboard has at least one parallel or serial port.
    (4) So good luck when installing your serial device to your POS solution. I will open another thread if I have problems with the buffer size of the device.
    Humberto Sequeira

    Hello Terry,
Indeed, they were not intended as POS system, the EEE Top machines are candy to the eye, but for my taste they do not work in POS environment (I give them 1 year before they pop). Regarding the other, well competition is tought, so you have to get creative in order to keep costs down, and this one can be used as a waiter stations, that do not need heavy serial comunications.
Anyways, the POSReady does not install these system files if the installation does not detect a serial or parallel port (which make sense, as why would it install drivers for a device that is not detected). I posted this for others to be aware of this when they select the hardware that will be offered to their customers, as good old "on mother-board" serial and parallel ports cannot be beaten by their USB imitations (IRQ and memory addressing processing are needed for end devices to function properly).
    Have a great weekend,
    Humberto

  • USB Drive with FAT32 on Blade 2000 with Solaris 9

I attached a Western Digital USB Drive to the USB-Post of my Sun Blade 2000 running Solaris 9. It is detected immediately:
    iostat -En< ... snip SCSI & DVD drives ... >
c3t0d0 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
Vendor: WDC Product: WD2500JB0104153 Revision: Serial No: Size: 250.06GB <250059350016 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 0 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0
The drive can be formatted (takes ages) and UFS set up and it runs fine with that. But the goal is to have it running with FAT32 for data exchange with other systems. If it is formated FAT32 with Windows it cannot be mounted using for example
    mount -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0s2 /mnt
    mount -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0s2:1 /mnt
    mount -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0sX:Y /mntetc. with variing numbers for X and Y!
The error message always is equivalent to (I can't recall the exact words): no valid DOS-filesystem found.
Invoking "format" and selecting the disk then asks if the disk should be labeled. If answered with yes all the disk is in one partition. Labelling the disk seems to kill all partitions as reattaching the disk to a Windows computer has the result that the disk has to be initialized and new partitions created. All data is hence lost.
I also tried creating a FAT32 filesystem from Solaris (which would be nice actually, as Windows isn't able to format 250Gig with FAT32 in one chunk) after creating a new partition using:
mkfs -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0s7Trying to mount this slice then yields:
    mount -F pcfs dev/dsk/c3t0d0s7 /mntI/O error
Now I'm out of ideas! Do I have to "activate" FAT32 support specially? It all seemed so easy reading the "Managing USB Devices" in the Solaris 9 Documentation.
Thanks for any help in advance!

    Did you try
    mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c3t0d0s2:c /mnt
What's the contents of the fdisk partition table on Solaris, after you've prepared the USB HDD on windows?
The command "fdisk -W - /dev/dsk/c3t0d0s2" prints the raw fdisk partition infomation.
You can also try to create the pcfs filesystem on Solaris, using something like this:
fdisk /dev/rdsk/c3t0d0s2 (create a 100% FAT32LBA partition, activate it and write back the fdisk label)
    mkfs -F pcfs -o fat=32 /dev/rdsk/c3t0d0s2:c

This is perfectly correct on my case I was not adding the root properly you must add the CA and the ADFS as well, which is twice you can see below my results.
    on my case was :

  • Using usb as serial connecting to cisco router not working

Tried using ZOC and securecrt and both shows only /dev/tty-Bluetooth.....
any ideas how can I use USB as serial connection to router?

Hi and welcome to the forums!
GREAT FIRST POST!! Very clear and specific. You don't know how rare that is
Is the laptop in a docking bay?
Content "encryption" meaning Content protection is turned off, right?
Are you able to backup and sync with the Desktop software?
Do you have the correct folders on the card?
Blackberry, music, ringtones, pictures, videos, voice notes?
    (blackberry has to be first).
Last one, how did you format the card?
    Thanks

  • Windows XP in BootCamp using USB-to-serial converter

I know this is all ancient equipment, but here is my dilemma.
I have an old computer-operated embroidery sewing machine I would like to use.  In order to use it, I need a machine that has RS232 and parallel printer ports.  My current machine is a MacBook 2,1 running OS 10.6.8.  Since the sewing machine works in Windows XP, I need to run that software in BootCamp with XP and Service Pack 3.  I purchased a USB-to-RS232 adapter cable, but the XP will not recognize the cable as a "port" to allow the software to recognize it.  When checking Device Manager in XP, the cable shows up as "other devices."
    Therefore, my question is:
How to I get a MacBook 2,1 running Windows XP in BootCamp to recognize a USB-to-RS232 cable as a port?

No.  The cable came with no drivers.
I would think it should have since serial ports are long gone natively. The drivers might have been a separate download. In any case, Staples offers a USB to serial cable and has a separate download of drivers here. No guarantees, but you might give it a try. This is the cable the drivers go with.

  • How can I video chat with someone who uses web based yahoo?

Not long ago I purchased my first Mac (New MacBook Pro 2.53GHZ); last Summer I also purchased a MacBook Pro for my daughter. Everything works great (like driving a formula one Porsche after grappling with a battered pick-up truck (meaning Windows) for many decades; cannot imagine ever going back. But, there is one issue that I have not been able to solve and for which I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or advice. I am familiar with ichat and with AIM (my daughter uses it all the time). However, the vast majority of people with whom I communicate via IM live in parts of the world where very few people have even a computer at home much less residential internet access. As a result, near all of the folks I would be chatting with have to use public computers (internet cafes, libraries, etc) and obviously they cannot install AIM or anything else on those public computers. About 90% of them use the web based yahoo messenger which can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection (most of the rest use MSN). My question is this: I know how to do video chat in ichat but ichat does not support yahoo. How can I do video chat with someone who is using web based yahoo on a public computer that has a USB web cam? I was able to do this on my old PC which had a plug in web cam but do not know how it might work on a Mac. Should I install yahoo messenger on my MacBook Pro and will that work for me?. I know about some other Mac compatible chat clients such as Admiun but as far as I can tell none of them support video chat or in some cases yahoo. Perhaps I am overlooking something. I would be very grateful for any suggestions or advice in this matter. Thanks to anyone who reads this post and has any helpful info.

    Zurich,
I don't think the web-based Yahoo Messenger supports video, so nothing you can do with that.

I think there are Mac compatible MSN clients that will do video, (i.e. aMSN) Also, Microsoft plans on releasing an updated version of Messenger for Mac soon.

GoogleTalk does have a browser based video chat, but your friends would need to install a browser plug-in. (which I would assume that can't do either)
The best option is Skype, but also requires an install on their end (I would think that the internet cafes would/should have this available)
    Good Luck,
