User preferences applied through OD broken in Lion

Server : 10.6.8
Clients : 10.7.3
Problem :
This has not been a problem til today. Any preferences I make for user groups are not applied when clients sign on, only preferences for computer groups are applied. I don't quite understand what could have happened. I have so many settings I have set for my user but none of them are being applied. I notice that this only happens on the 10.7 clients. 10.6 clients apply the settings just fine. Has anyone else experienced this or have any insite into it?

Hi,
after you have added your mac to AD (bind) navigate to the search path configuration and add the \DOMAINNAME search path above the \All Domains search path there.
It should work then.
However, you will still not be able to create a mobile user account. Let me know if you need more help here then.

somi

• Workgroup users policy applying through AD server

Hi All.
Can anyone guide me how to create policy for workgroup users from the AD server.
Thanx In Adavance

Hi,
Based on my knowledge, you goal may not be achieved.
In a workgroup:
a. All computers are peers; no computer has control over another computer.
b. Each computer has a set of user accounts
As a workaround, you may add the PCs in workgroup to domain. Please also add the users to domain.
In this way, you can use Server to manage these PC.
Hope it helps.

• Set user preference Locale

Dear all,
I would like to set user preferences locale through a Java program.
It seems that language locale is not part of the desktopsettings and I've not been able to find out what key to use with getProfileString (if any).
Could you provide me an example of how to set the user preferences locale language?
Best regards,
Francesco

You can use "SI_LOCALE" as an argument to getProfileString() to retrieve a user's locale.

Hi all
In administering this policy I am a little confused.
We have a policy that distributes proxy settings in the internet explorer maintenance settings section - however when opening this policy up in GPO editor the internet explorer maintenance section is not present.
I plan to apply the settings via User/preferences/control panel settings/ internet settings (or registry settings from article) however I am unable to edit the settings for internet explorer maintenance and these will persist. Ideas????

• Lion Server: Can user preferences - created with workgroup manager - beupdated with Profile Manager?

I've created some users and their preferences using the old workgroup manager. All work. I haven't used the profile manager (lion star functionality) so far. If I do so, can I use it to update the user preferences already created? Is there any incompatibility between workgroup manager and profile manager?

Dang, no help with this. Oh well. Guess I just mark it as "answered" and toss it in the "Cold Case" files.

• User Preferences not saved in 10.6.8

I have a Mac Book Pro running 10.6.8. Somewhere along the way something got messed up in the permissions (I assume) and none of the user preferences are saved i.e. items added to the toolbar in Safari, iTunes account log in, prefered browser, browser window size and position, etc.
I have run Disk Utility a number of times, and every time it "repairs" dozens of permissions, and when I run it again, it repairs the same ones (pretty sure anyway) definitely dozens of repairs everytime, no matter how many times I repair.
I did a user migration to a clean install, no help, all the old problems came with the migration. I have reinstalled the OS twice since then. Hoping I won't have to wipe the drive and start from scratch.
Thanks, T Bruce

First off, Permissions repair won't touch anything in your user. Stop repairing Permissions. Generally a waste of time anyway.
Do a GetInfo (Cmd-I) on the Preferences folder in your user (home folder) Library. What does it say for Sharing and Permissions?
It should show that you, your user, has Read and Write and everyone No Access.
I would suggest using the following procedure to reset your home folder Permissions, which may fix this problem.
Boot from the Mac OS X Install Disc:
Insert the disc.
Shut down the computer.
Turn it on again whilst holding down the C key.
You can let go when you see a spinning dial.
Click through the menus until you after you’ve accepted a license agreement.
Snow Leopard: At the top, click Utilities -> Reset Password.
Lion: At the top, click Utilities -> Terminal. Type resetpassword in the Terminal and press Enter.
Click on your main hard drive.
In the dropdown box under “Select the user account” make sure to select your username.
Underneath where it says “Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs”, click the Reset button.
Press cmd + Q to Quit the Reset Password application. Press it again if you have a Terminal open.
Click Mac OS X Installer in the top left and click Quit Mac OS X Installer.
Click the Startup Disk button.
Click on your main hard drive and click the Restart button.

• Can user preference be set for an enterprise environment?

I am trying to find where user preferences are stored so that they can be applied across the user base for a large organisation. Specifically the main dictionary language (default to English US where as I'd like English UK), and Confirmation Messages (to disable the Startup message in Microsoft Windows Vista/Microsoft Windows 7).
I found AdobeCaptivate.ini in C:\Program Files\Adobe\AdobeCaptivate 6 x64\ which only had 2 entires in it.
VistaWin7StartupMessage = 0
LowDiskSpaceMessage = 0
I thought I was onto a winner when I found the "Vista..." entry but having made my change in the application, this .ini file entry doesn't change at all.
I've tried taking exports from the hives in the registry, making the changes, then taking a new export before comparing them (using Beyond Compare)
I've tried running ProcessMonitor during the steps of making my changes, then browising through the capture logs.
Neither of these has provided me with any indication on where these settings are stored so I'm at a loss on how to deal with this. Has anyone else attemped this before? Or can anyone suggest another method on capturing these changes? Many thanks.

• How to set default User preferences in Analyzer for all users

How to set default User preferences in Analyzer for all users

Hi,

I would like to set some settings in Analyzer as default for all users. For example:
1. I'm pretty sure higher access superceedes, so you could set up a group with no actual access, just to get the preferences working, then their individual security will dictate what they can do. I haven't tested this fully, but I beleive this is how it will work.
As far as setting the preferences, go into the admin console and right click on the group, then select Preferences. To apply the group preferences to a user, add the user to the group, then right click on the user, select preferences and from the upper left corner, use the drop down to select the active preference, in this case, it will be the group you created and added them to.

HTH

• Actual date hours PROBLEM - Displaying or not "Show time" in "User preferences"

Hello,
This is my current issue. I have a 5 days calendar with hours 7AM -> 8PM.
AM ->When I check "show time" in "user preferences", I show the good hours in ES and EF. When I apply AS and AF, AUTOMATICALY the good default hours are applied if i change the date (7AM -> 8PM)...
But, if i check, "do not show time" in "user preferences" and then i apply AS and/or AF changing date, PRIMAVERA apply automaticaly 00:00 in the hour ans "forget" the hours of the calendar...
It represent a big big problem for me, first of all in the gantt representation.
Any idea to fix this issue ?
Thanks

I think you need to do setting in grantt chart view setting..as Day,Week,Month in stead of user preference as " do not show time".

• Changing Default user Preferences in Workspace

I am using HFM 9.3.1. Each time I set up a new user I have to get them to log in, and go through the following routine..
Go to File>Preferences. Then Select Financial Reporting on the left side of the preferences window. Under the Preview heading on the screen are two radio buttons for On and Off. Select On and click OK.
Does anyone know how to change the default setting on this Preference to On?

From the workspace administrators manual, the directions are:
Assigning Reporting and Analysis Default Preferences
User Management Console enables users with Provisioning Manager and Explorer roles to set
the default folder, new document folder, and start page application preferences for users and
groups. Individual and group preferences have precedence over default preferences.
For default preferences to succeed, users and groups must have the roles and permissions
necessary to access specified folders and interface elements.
Provisioning Manager is a Shared Services role that enables you to provisions users and groups
to applications. It is also required for setting default user preferences for Reporting and Analysis.
For more information, see the Hyperion Security Guide.
➤ To assign default preferences for Reporting and Analysis:
1 Select Navigate > Administer > User Management.
2 Log on to User Management Console with a user name provisioned with Provisioning Manager and Explorer
roles.
3 Expand the Projects node until a Reporting and Analysis application is displayed.
4 Right-click the application name and select Assign Preferences.A three-step wizard is displayed in the Process bar.
5 For step 1 of the Wizard, Select Users, select Available Users or Available Groups.
6 From the left panel, select user names or group names and click the right arrow.
To select consecutive names, select the first name, press and hold down Shift, and select the last
name. To select names that are not consecutive, press and hold down Ctrl, and select each item.
Use Add All to select all names.
7 Repeat steps 5 and 6 to select a combination of users and groups.
8 When all user and group names are displayed in Selected Users and Groups, click Next.
9 For step 2 of the Wizard, Manage Preferences, specify these default preferences for the selected users and
groups:
Managing Users 41
● Default Folder—Repository location of the default folder.
● New Document Folder—Default folder in which the new document wizard searches for
valid data sources, that is, Web Analysis database connection files and Interactive Reporting
documents.
● Start Page—Reporting and Analysis interface displayed after logging on. Select None,
Explore, Document, Favorite, or Scorecard.
If you select Explore or Document for Start Page, you must specify a repository location.
10 When all preferences are specified, click Next.
11 For step 3 of the Wizard, Finish, choose between three tasks:
● To configure options for another application, select one from the View pane.
● To change preferences for currently selected users and groups, click Back.
● To specify another set of users and groups and set their preferences, click Continue.

• Some user preferences lost

My brand-new Mac Mini was fine last night as of midnight. Sometime today, many but not all of my user preferences/software registration settings were lost. Eudora will not open, with an error message in the console log, Couldn't reopen address book databsse. Home directory may not be ready or is missing.
The home directory is still therre, as are all my files; in the directory I reach using cd ~. I did not rename my home directory. Obviously relevant, I can only see 3 accounts (including my usual account) in the log-in window. The folders are in the users directory on the hard drive, and they look normal in every way I can tell. NetInfo manager shows the accounts there, however.
All login items (chronosync, USB overdrive, etc) are missing from
I have VMware Fusion on the machine, and there are error messages that it could not enter super-mode.
Looking at the permissions on my home folder, the owner is show as "unknown". Since (thank God) I was using an administrator account, I changed the owner to myself.
But what on aerth might have happened? Where could the other two accounts have gone? I'd be most grateful for a pointer in the right direction!

I did repair permission, but I gather that that only fixes permissions for installed items, not user folders. At any rate, it didn't help. I checked the disk with Disk Utility, and Disk Warrior 4 ( which found the usual minor issues, not nothing useful).
Having retaken control of my home folder, now I'm concerned with what happened. There was nothing I could find in the logs to indicate what happened. I had the mini connected to the monitor through an Iogear DVI KVM, and when the computer woke up, it had to redetect the display. I would hope that couldn't cause permissions for the home folder to be lost; but I've connected the mini directly to the monitor for now.

• Bad user preference. How can I fix this?

My computer has been so slow (I've other posts about it). An effort to diagnose the problem was to run Onyx. It determined I had a bad user preference: "/Users/deborahmarlow/Library/Preferences/EROPref.plist:
stream had too few bytes".
Could this be, at least part, of my problem of such slow processing (when I am online)?
Does anyone know how to fix this bad user preference?
Thanks.

Thanks for the responses. I am on a another computer at 3:29 p.m. and have been trying to access this site and my post to read your responses since approximately 11:30 a.m. this morning. Frustratingly slow is an understatement. I am grateful that others are interested in helping me figure this out!!
What I've tried:
I have created a new user account but it is still very, very slow when logging in or opening anything online. I am working from this desktop computer trying to get the G4 laptop fixed. (I have posted 3 other questions that are all related to this problem if you'd care to look at them).
I looked at the site referred to above (re:preferences, plist) and am sure my problem is very similar, but, honestly, I have no idea what to do. I have tried to go to it to move it to the desktop but I cannot find it.Does anyone know how to find it? When I do find it, will it do any harm, potentially, to move it to the desktop? Should I try moving it? Will the system "replace" it with a correct file if I move it?
Could the wireless network I set up with an AirPort Extreme Basestation and card be what is making everything online sooooooo slow? If it is, it is only part of the problem because when I first went online with it it was faster... it was SOME faster, let me rephrase it. The user preference is involved somehow, I am sure I have more than one issue going on here.
I have been using Safari 1.3.2
Onyx was confusing when I used it and I've wondered if it "cleaned" something that shouldn't have been.
The AirPort network comes off high speed cable. Should I try to connect to the internet directly to rule out a wireless network problem? Does the wireless "bounce" off walls or go through them? If it goes straight then I have 3, maybe 4 walls between the base and the computer. If it bounces around then I probably only have 1 to go through.
I hope I've listed something that might give clues to the wise and knowledgeable out there to help me diagnose my trouble.... as I am panicked at not having my trusty laptop working wonderfully as it used to. My little "friend" is sick and I must get him better. Thank you for any insights you can offer!!
