Using 1 airport Express to create a WAN with a neighbour

We have a broadband internet connection at home via a Wimax-style radio link. Our neighbour, about 200 metres away is unable to get the same service as his house does not have line-of-sight to the transmitter. It's a holiday home and he only needs the connection infrequently for email etc., so I'd be happy to share my connection and bandwidth with him.
I'm wondering if I could achieve this by installing an Airport Express (in a weatherproof plastic box) on our rooftop, another one, mounted externally on his house and possibly another inside his house, to extend the range.
Is this a practical concept and would 200m be a feasible distance in open air?

Hi,
If absolutely necessary, you may want to experiment with a private Wi-Fi link based upon two standard wireless Ethernet bridge devices (also known as gaming adapters) connected to high-gain outside antennas. There are wireless Ethernet bridge models from many manufacturers; in this case you would need a type with (a connector for) an external antenna. Try an Internet search if you wish to build your own directional antenna.
An easier solution for your neighbour may be to buy a USB mobile broadband modem and connect directly to one of the 3G networks.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to create a secure wireless network in a wireless-only hotel?

Can I use the Airport Express to log onto an unsecured hotel wireless network, without an ethernet cable, to create a secure wireless network for my MacbookAir, IPad, IPhone, etc.? If so, how is that done?

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.

  • Using Airport Express to create a WDS with XP

I have a Dell laptop running XP Pro (SP 2) connected wirelessly to my Airport Extreme Base Station using a Netgear WGT511 wireless card. I am trying to create a WDS using 1 (or 2 if necessary) Airport Express stations to extend the wireless signal throughout the house. I am unable to get the Airport Express to connect to the Airport Extreme Base Station - the light on the Airport Express only blinks orange. I have tried the Setup assistant to no avail so far. The laptop does connect to the Airport Express, but I cannot connect to the internet as I can when directly connected to the Base Station.
    Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
I tried this last night and could not get it to work. I did manage to get the light on the Airport Express to go solid green, but I could not get the laptop (or the Imac) to recognize the Express - it would only connect to the Extreme base station. Re-scanning did not help.
I should add that I have no security enabled; however I do have a firewall (McAffee) on the laptop.

  • Can I use my AirPort express to create a wireless network in my uni room?

So, I'm going to university in september and my room has an ethernet port to connect to the internet. If I buy an AirPort express, can I plug it into the ethernet port to create a wirelss network in my room?

The quick answer is yes.  However, You should check with the appropriate University authorities to make sure they will allow it (some do not)  If they agree, they may offer you a tutorial as to what you need to do to enable it.
Many business people utilize the Airport Express to provide the convenience of Wi fi in their hotel rooms, if the hotel doesn't supply an in house Wi Fi system.

  • Can I use my airport express to establish wifi with Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS cable modem?

Can I use my airport express to establish wifi connection with a Motorola SN6120 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem?

Yes, the AEx goes into router mode.. plug in via ethernet to the modem port.. you then need to power cycle the cable modem.. it might need to be off for 20min or more before it will lose the previous connection and start afresh with the Express.

  • Can I connect multiple Mac's using the Airport Express?

As subject. I have got an Intel iMac and a MacBook. Can I connect them using the Airport Express? Or in another word, to create a network among them that I can see the other Mac on one Mac?
Sorry, if I raised a silly question. But really like to know.
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Can I use an airport express as a range extender to a NON apple router using an internet cable (so not wireless)

can I use an airport express as a range extender to a NON apple router using an internet cable (so not wireless)

Yes, if the AirPort Express is set up to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name as the other router and the same wireless network password as the other router.

  • Using Older Airport Express as an wireless/ethernet bridge

    Hi there,
I noticed that people are using their Airport Express (n) products to create a bridge to wireless networks via the ethernet port on the Express.
Is this possible for older non-N Airport Expresses?
I read online that one could set up a WDS network, but I am having -no- luck doing that. Each time I try, I am prompted to enter other nodes on the WDS network, but there's a chicken and egg problem since the first node I am trying to set up keeps requiring other nodes before applying the changes to the configuration it is very frustrating.
I have an Airport Extreme (b/g) and two airport expresses (b/g) and would very very much like to connect an ethernet-run skype phone to one of the expresses. I currently use one as an AirTunes node, and the other (the one I want to use for the skype ophone) as a wireless printer node. Is it possible to use the latter as an ethernet bridge? Can I do that without setting up a WDS network? If I have to have a WDS network, what are the step by step instructions I should follow to do that for all the hardware listed above?
This seems a lot harder than it should be.

+I noticed that people are using their Airport Express (n) products to create a bridge to wireless networks via the ethernet port on the Express.+
+Is this possible for older non-N Airport Expresses?+
It is only possible with the older Express if you also have an Apple main router and setup all the devices in a WDS arrangement. If you are having difficulty setting up the WDS on your network, reference pages 42-44 in the Designing AirPort Networks Guide for a step by step procedure of this. Or, perhaps you might want to use one of the excellent posts by Tesserax for this as well. See this post.

  • Using the AirPort Express to Join an existing Wireless Network

    Hello,
I am hoping you can provide me with some help on this... I recelty acquired a PowerMac G4 with a 450 MHz processor, CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, Zip Drive, 1 GB RAM, and two 40 GB HD... The system has OS 10.4 installed, and it is has built-in Ethernet...
I was told I could use the Airport Express to connect to an existing wireless network, so I purchased an Airport Express base Station... Thing is, to e honest, I am having a bit of a problem getting started...
    - First, to connect from the AirPort Express to my G4, do I need a special kind of Ethernet cable, or will the usual kind do?
    - Second do I need to istall the software first, or have the Airport express connected to the G4 before I do?
How would I go about setting this up, step-by-step?
    Any information would be appreciated...
    Thanks for your time...

OK, thanks. Hopefully, the Netgear is creating a wireless network using WPA/WPA2 security. That will make it much easier for the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network. It can join networks with using WEP security, but password issues almost always arise using WEP.
Since you must enter the exact security settings and password for the wireless network, it would help tremendously to know this in advance. Otherwise, it's going to be a series of "trial and errors" and likely frustration, later on.
When you have a moment, check the security settings on the Netgear router.
It might be one of the following: WPA2 Personal, WPA/WPA2 Personal, WEP 128, WEP 40.

  • Is it possible to access my DVR from the Internet using an Airport Express and Airport Extreme?

I would like to use my Airport Express to connect to my DVR and use it to access the Internet by setting it up to wireless extend my Airport Extreme network?
This would allow me great flexibility to place the DVR wherever I wanted.  I would create a static IP address for the DVR but would I also have to create one for the Airport Express as well?  What would I put as my Gateway address?  Would it be the IP address of the Airport Extreme or the Airport Express?
Looking forward to the advice to see if this is possible...

It may not be compatible with the iPad. See below for reference.
    H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • HT1515 Can I use two Airport Express, one being the connection to my Internet Provider and the second one, being an extension to my wifi?

I would like to know if with them I could use one Airport Express as the connection point to my ISP and the second one, just to extend the wifi range. Anyone knows about this ?

    Yes you can.
But, remember that the AirPort Express is a router only. It does not have a modem on board, so you will need a modem to connect to your ISP.
Then, connect one Express to the modem and configure it to "create" a wireless network".
Configure the second Express to "extend" a wireless network.

  • How to use 2 Airport Express units?

In my office upstairs I use an AirPort Express to tap into the wireless router downstairs wirelessly. Works great. In a bedroom also upstairs, I have a Blu Ray player I want to connect to the Internet. I thought if I got another AirPort Express unit in that Bedroom then it too could tap into the wireless router downstairs so I could then run an ethernet cable from the AirPort Express to the BluRay player. I tried that but when I look on my computer in the AirPort Utility screen, it only recognizes one of the AirPort Express units. That unit in the Bedroom continues to have a flashing yellow light and no internet connection. What do I need to do to get an internet connection in the Bedroom?

    Welcome to the discussions!
+These past Holidays “Santa” delivered a new Mac Book Pro, along with a Time Machine which is built into an Airport Extreme.+
You have a Time Capsule, correct?
The Time Capsule can "extend a wireless network" as well as perform backup functions on the network.
You could continue to use your AirPort Express in another part of the house to provide a stronger wireless signal in that area. (I've yet to meet the first person who felt that they had too much wireless coverage in their home).
If you have a DVR or newer DVD player that requires an ethernet connection for advanced features from the internet, the ethernet port on the Express is "live" when it is set to "extend", so you might think about that option as well.
Hotels don't use ethernet nearly as much as several years ago, but I always take my spare Express on the road to hook up to the hotel's ethernet jack and create a wireless network in the room for the laptop or iPhone. Works great.

  • I have a nokia siemens router. Can I use apple airport express with this to expand my wi-fi range

I HAVE A NOKIA SIEMENS ROUTER. THROUGH THAT I AM USIING WI-FI NETWORK AT MY HOME. I WANT TO EXTEND ITS RANGE SO I BUY AIRPORT EXPRESS. CAN I USE WITH THIS ROUTER

Please do not type in all capital letters. It is difficult to read and appears as if you are SHOUTING.
You can use the AirPort Express to provide more wireless coverage for your router if you connect an Ethernet cable from the router to the AirPort Express and configure it to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as your Siemens router.
If you are asking if you can use the Express to extend the wireless network using wireless only, it is extremely unlikely that this will work since Apple's "extend" a wireless network feature appears to work only with other Apple products.
As far as we know, it is not compatible with devices from any other manufacturer.

  • HT4260 Is Airport Express Gen 1 (no WAN port) suitable for an extended network (roaming)

Is the Airport Express Gen 1 (no WAN port) suitable for an extended network (roaming)? It (Express) ha no WAN port.
I have a new Airport Extreme.  I wish to extend the network (wired, not wireless) to an older (Gen 1) Airport Express.
I have followed the instructions explicitly.
EXCEPT: the Airport Express has only a LAN port and no WAN port.  The instructions state to insert the cable from the Extreme into the Express WAN port.
    Solutons? Thanks!

    Thanks, CRMDVM, for that explanation.
I am successfully using the Express as extended (wireless) now with the Extreme as the primary base station.  I will try it (wired) with an ethernet cable attached to the Express (Gen 1) LAN port (which you say also functions as a WAN port in this case). BTW, my confusion arose because Gen2 of the Express includes a WAN and a LAN port

  • How do I Extend my airport extreme using an airport express

How do i use and airport express to extend my network off an airport extreme

Apple's step by step instructions are here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
Although two Extremes are pictured, the setup for an Express is exactly the same.
If you are running Lion 10.7.3, you will need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion for the instructions to make sense.
Otherwise, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilties > AirPort Utiltiy to start the process.
