Using 1st Gen Shuffle in Disk Mode

I have need for a 1Gbyte flash drive all of a sudden, and I realize my 1st Gen Shuffle fills the bill. So I reviewed the manual for using this in Disk mode, which shows a check box option to employ "disk mode" for the device.
Except that the new version of iTunes doesn't actually have that same option in it's settings anywhere. So I can still deselect "open iTunes when device inserted" option, there's no "disk mode" anywhere.
Question, then...does there need to be? Or will it now just work?
Thanks for any help.

Yes there needs to be, and is: It's lower down the Settings panel. Make your iTunes window bigger by pulling the lower right corner... OR just scroll downwards.

  • Two 1st gen shuffles; one comp

ok here's my problem; i have a first gen ipod shuffle.(the long skinny white one) it works fine had it for 2 months. i bought my son the same 1st gen shuffle for xmas. I went to install the cd; it removed the 1st installation from when i installed my shuffle. so i reinstalled. it won't recognize the second shuffle (my son's) AT ALL. i restored it using the restore utility download; no help. the new shuffle is still plugged in orange light. doesnt show up in itunes or on my computer.
also when i registered the new shuffle the serial code wasnt accepted, so i had to use the MP code on the box, then it shows me the serial number, which is the exact number i entered.
my question is: can you run two shuffles on one computer, on one itunes, and just have the program recognize the two different shuffles? how? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

For running Multiple iPods please look to this article.

As For trying to install the CD to the Shuffle, Make sure that you are running the latest version of Itunes.
    1. Click Help in iTunes
    2. Click About Itunes
The Version number will be the first thing you see scrolling up the page. if you are not Running 7.0.2 then Download latest software and try to sync ipod once again.

  • Can't Update 1st-gen Shuffle

I have iTunes 7.0.2 and Mac OS X 10.4.8. My (1st-gen) shuffle is recognized and syncs older or non-DRM songs just fine, but won't sync some newer songs purchased through the iTunes Music Store. I get a message telling my to perform an update from the Summary tab.
Unfortunately, the Update and Restore buttons on the summary tab are disabled, so I can't use them. Nor can I use the iPod Updater 2.0.1 -- it never recognizes the iPod. The iPod Updater 2006-06-28 *does* recognize the iPod, but fails to recognize a software version. Likewise, the summary tab in iTunes says "n/a" for both Software Version and Serial Number. (I've tried "updating" using the 06-28 version; it tries, but gives me an error.)
How can I update this thing? I'd like to have my newer music on my iPod.

I downloaded and tried the Shuffle Reset Utility, but it couldn't restore the shuffle. I received an error message saying "No Firmware."
However, I went to my wife's Windows computer, downloaded the Shuffle reset utility, and it worked fine, there. In fact, the Shuffle worked flawlessly with Windows (I was able to sync it with my wife's iTunes library, etc).
I thought -- great, back in business! However, when I returned to the Mac and tried to sync with my own music library, I have the same problems; the Shuffle's version, serial number, et cetera isn't recognized, I can't sync newer songs, et cetera.
Obviously, the Shuffle isn't the problem. Also, the Shuffle worked fine with my Mac before the latest iTunes update; I'm beginning to think it's a Mac software issue with the update. The other possibility is a connection issue, but I've tried all the direct USB ports on the computer, and also a powered hub (also, the fact that the Shuffle worked fine, before, makes me think that the connection probably isn't the issue).
    Dunno.

I have the first gen shuffle, and have now purchased a new shuffle.  I want to transfer my music from one to the other.  most was loaded from old cds.  how can I do this?

  • 1st gen shuffle with radar detector

I used to connect my radar detector and mp3 player together so that the sound would play out of the same place. I've recently acquired a 1st gen shuffle and it won't play correctly when connected with the radar. Neither max volume or sound check are enabled in the settings. What's up with this?

No idea. It has no speaker to play sounds.

  • 1st Gen Shuffle not recognized by Windows XP Pro

I cannot get my 1st gen shuffle to be seen by Windows XP Pro. We have all the updates, the latest version of iTunes. The Shuffle plays, it connects to another computer running Windows XP. I see several messages here that point to different articles. The only thing we haven't done is edit the registry.

Have you tried going through the steps here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
If that doesn't work, sometimes other USB devices plugged in can cause this. You may want to try removing any other USB devices plugged into the CPU (other than the keyboard and mouse).
Also, what version of iTunes are you running? Check that by going along the top of iTunes and choosing Help>About iTunes.

  • 1st Gen Shuffle not rec'd by Windows/Itunes/Laptop

I've had my 512 1st gen shuffle for approx. 1 year.
The battery died so I plugged the shuffle into my CPU's (Windows XP Home SP2, DFI Lanparty Motherboard, AMD 3000 Processor yadda yadda yadda)
USB port and there was no response. I tried multiple ports, restarted computer, installed latest and greatest Itunes.
I tried my flashdrive on my desktop, it works fine.
So then I tried my Ipod on my laptop (which does not have itunes, windows xp home, old pos) and the laptop did NOT recognize the ipod.
However the ipod, although nearing battery death, still works, plays music, skips songs, it just refuses to play nice with my computers.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    ~Mike

    I have a similar issue..
The iPod name has changed to iPod, the serial number doesn't appear to be right. The version of the software is correct at 1.1.5 and the capacity of the player is now n/a
Both have been operating flawlessly one with windows and one with Mac for almost two years. I see that there are quite a few restore issues being raised on the forum at the minute... does anyone know if this is an issue related to the latest version of software or is it just something that I have been unaware of?
I'm scared to plug my second shuffle in just in case it turns into a non-functional piece of white plastic too..

  • Does iTunes have to be installed to use the shuffle in disk mode?

I have read through the string titled 'Ipod only recognized as "unknown device" '.
I have the same problem, however I ran into an issue where iTunes would not start so I uninstalled the program.
I was wondering, does iTunes have to be installed or running for the shuffle to operate in disk mode ot should the shuffle act as a normal jump drive regardless?

Also, I found this Apple article that relates http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303553. This is true for all Intel Macs, not just the Macbook Pro. It also confirms my earlier position, but is vague as to how much faster it is. Ideally, we'd all have 2 Gigs with paired 1 Gig modules.
A quick google search will reveal that the boost is fairly small, but noticable in situations where performance is limited by memory bandwidth. Keep in mind having less memory reduces performance signifcantly, if you run out of memory and more pageouts / virtual memory usage is required. Virtual Memory is orders of magnitude slower than regular memory, think Nanoseconds vs. Milliseconds.
So 1.25 Gigs might be better than 1 Gig for that reason, regardless of if its single-channel or dual-channel. It all depends on how you use computer, but like I said above, I'd just go for what's cheaper in this case.

  • 1st gen shuffle

    Hi all,
Have ipod shuffle 1st gen 512. Bought new imac and had to restore my IPS for the computer. Problem, itunes recognizes my ipod says "ipod update complete ok to disconnect" but when I disconnect and put on my (or anyone else's headphones) on no sound comes out.. Please tell me there is a solution out there for this.... I have tried to restore it 3 times so far but no sound...
Also, the ipod shows on itunes but not on my imac desktop??? HELP ME PLEASE..

    So you
    A. Already can see that the Shuffle's Playlist in iTunes shows that it has some tracks loaded to it? (Playlist displayed, no strange icons beside the tracks, etc.)
    B. Have already tried to Reset it? (OFF for 5 secs, then back ON)
    C. Have confirmed that the LED status lights are otherwise OK, that it looks like it should be playing something? (Short duration GRN when PLAY/PAUSE is pressed)
    D. That you've increased the volume, and seen the right status lights displayed when you do that? (Flash of GRN whever volume adjusted, until max limits are hit)
    E. Are operating in Disk Mode? (If not, then your iPS will show in iTunes, but not on your Desktop, at all times when you're not updating)

  • 1st Gen Shuffle not charging, recognized by Windows or iTunes

    Hi,
Got an iPod Shuffle (1st Gen, 512mb) from a friend the other day. He'd owned it for less than a year and had bought an iPod video, which is why he gave the shuffle to me. It was working great. Windows recognized it. iTunes recognized it. Moved my music library over to it. Charged it.
Came home last night and plugged it in. Nothing. No charge light. Windows didn't see it. iTunes didn't see it. Tried the 5 R's. Tried a bunch of things found on the boards here. Unplugged it - it still had a charge from before and played music just fine. Thinking that the USB connector spontaneously died on the Shuffle. Any suggestions/ideas? Anyone else have this problem and find a solution short of replacing it?

Exact same thing happened my my wife's 1st gen 512MB Shuffle last week. Still plays music, but no longer charges or shows up as connected to the computer (PC or Mac). I figured the same as you... seems as though the USB connector is dead.
Her fix was to head to the Apple Store for a new gen 2 Shuffle that same day since she "can't live without it". Her original shuffle saw 22 months of very heavy use (car, gym, jogging) and bouncing around in her purse/backpack, so I guess it did have a good run.

  • Ipod 5th Gen Video 80Gb disk mode not recognized on itunes

    Hi there everyone,
So i have my ipod 5th gen 80GB video and here's my problem.
Time ago i had it in a pocket of my backpack that was supposed to be waterproof. We got completely washed in NYC and when i took it out of my backpack pocket the ipod was dead or behaving in a weird way.
It didn't turn on then i let it dry. After weeks i've been trying to charge it but it seems it had battery problems so i bought a new one and replaced.
Now the ipod stays on but it keeps restarting showing me the sad face. Then it restarts beginning fgrom the apple logo and the same thing comes up.
I can put it in disk mode and also in the diagnostic mode thru the key combination.
I let it sit for 24 hours more or less to the wall charger and the battery seems to be completely full and the ipod stays on, still fiving me the same synthoms. Then i put it in disk mode while downloading the last version of itunes (9). When i plug it in, i hear the sound that windows makes when you plug something via usb. It installs the software and it sees it as an ipod device. But itunes WON'T.
This appens with every usb port that i have. I can put it in disk mode even plugged into the computer, i hear the windows sound like i just plugged something in but nothing.
When i reset the ipod, sometimes i see the screen that tells me to connect the ipod to itunes and procede to the restore.
Sometimes i see the big V and the "ok to disconnect". The if i plug it in with itunes open on my desktop i see the "do not disconnect" but nothing happens, it will not see it yet.
After 30 secs more or less, the ipod restarts again on its own showing me the sad face.
If i turn it off it tells me "very low battery" but i don't know if this last one statement its important or not.
I know already that all of my music and videos are gone. I just would like to get to the restore step then i'll start over again loading music and videos.
What kind of problem do you think it has? Is there another hardware component damaged that needs to be replaced?
Is there a solution for this kind of issue?
Of course i've been following ALL the apple instructions on the website, the 5 R's and so on but nothing worked.
I really hope that someone in here could give me an hint because at this point i really don't know where to crush my head
Thank you so much for your time!

I'm having the same exact problem. When I first started using Vista it was fine, but now all of the sudden it will do nothing with My iPod and it kind of angers me.

  • IPod touch 1st gen goes into recovery mode after shut down or lock

Alright, so I bought a used iPod touch 1st gen from a friend. It was working fine for a few weeks until it started shutting off and going into recovery mode when I locked or turned it off. When off, half of the times I can do a hard reatart and hold the home and hold buttonsand it will turn on. The other times it will just come up with a white screen. When I plug it into my computer, it says it has to be restored. And this is an ongoing loop that I cannot seem to fix. I looked up my serial number and it says it's out of warranty.
So my first question is, is there anyway I personally can fix this problem, or do I have to take it to Apple? My second question is, what are their policies on iPods that were bought used from someone else? And is there a way for me to get a warranty on it to get it repaired if I can't fix it myself or do I have to pay full price on replacement or repairs?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Did you let iTunes restore it? Has the problem continued? The article below discusses how to put your iPod into a recovery mode so you can fix it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
As to your warranty, you no longer have one. Apple will, for a fee, repair your iPod if it needs repairing. There are independent shops who can do it as well - just Google them.

  • Ipod touch(1st gen) stuck in recovery mode and cannot restore??

I just bought a used ipod touch 1st gen.  It was fully functional before I wiped it.  I wanted to remove all of the other person's music and personal info before I started using it. I also wanted to update ios.  I wiped it and when it restarted it was in recovery mode. I have tried to restore it and I keep getting an error message that it could not restore unknown error has occurred  (1).  I have tried troubleshooting and going through all of the steps that Apple suggests and nothing has worked.  Any suggestions?  I just want it restored and updated to the latest ios that will work with it (3.1.1 I believe) I don't know what to do at this point.

  • 1st gen shuffle broken?...

About two days ago my ipod shuffle (1ST GEN) was working fine. The next day when i came back from school, I went to go charge it with my belkin wall adapter but none of the lights came on but the charger had been working previously. When I tried it on my computer, the computer would not recognize the shuffle and the lights do not turn on when i plug it in like usual. Could it be my ipod and is there any way to reset it to its factory settings by itself. Also the day before it wouldn't charge, the switch on the back accidentally got stuck between shuffle and regular play and it turned off during. After I switched it back when it played music it would skip. But i reset it by toggling the hold mode and it worked fine after. Any ideas?...

      Windows XP

I was having exactly the same problem, which
incidentally has happened with my old Shuffle (this
is its warranty replacement) and my partner's.
Anyway, this new Shuffle Resetting App seems to have
    done the trick:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodshufflerese
    tutility101formac.html
You might have to run the app a few times - after the
first time it told me to unplug it, after the second
time it told me it was rebooting itself, the third
    time it findally worked.
I think it's a disgrace that iPod Shuffles seem to
last only a few months. This one is 8 months old but
because it's already a replacement, it's not under
warranty. When will Apple start to make products
that last at least a whole year???
I've tried to do this application but when i plug it in to my usb port, my computer gives no signal that i did. Its like plugging in air. Any ideas anybody(besides getting a new one)?
