Using a partitionned cache with off-heap storage for backup data

Hi,
Is it possible to define a partitionned cache (with data into the heap) with off-heap storage for backup data ?
I think it could be worthwhile to do so, as backup data are associated with a different access pattern.
If so, what are the impacts of such off-heap storage for backup data ?
Particularly, what are the impacts on performance ?
Thanks.
Regards,
Dominique

Hi,
It seems what using scheme for backup-store is broken in latest version of Coherence, I've got an exception using your setup.

    Hello Terri0125,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
You have a couple of options here. First you can use this article to manage your iCloud storage:

You can manage the storage either from your device, or from a computer. Whichever is more convenient for you.
You can also backup your device to iTunes for a local backup if you want.

  • Using older 500GB TC with new 1TB TC for extra storage

I recently upgraded to the duel channel 1 TB Time Capsule and was wondering if I can use the older single channel 500GB Time Capsule purely as extra storage on my network. I just hate to let the old TC collect dust when there is valuable storage on it...
I'm concerned that if I connect the 500GB TC to the new one with an ethernet cable, the WIFI functions on the old TC may interfere or confuse the the computers on my network trying to connect wirelessly to the older TC. I'd prefer not to join the older TC to the network wirelessly.
    Questions:
    1. If I connect the older TC to the new one using ethernet cable, will the WIFI functionality of the old one automatically turn off or will it turn on and search for devices to connect to?
    2. Should I connect the two using ethernet, which I understand is a much faster connection, or do I need to connect the two using USB to use the older TC purely as additional storage?
    3. Is there anyway to manually turn off the WIFI functionality of the older TC to act as an external drive only?
    4. If the WIFI cannot be turned off, will it interfere with the signals of the new TC? And do I have to join it to the network at this point or will the ethernet or USB connections override and shutdown the WIFI?
    5. Will this work at all without any trouble or do I need to invest in a simple external hard drive at some point and connect using USB or ethernet to gain additional network storage as the TC documentation indicates I can easily do?
    Any guidance is appreciated!
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions!
+1. If I connect the older TC to the new one using ethernet cable, will the WIFI functionality of the old one automatically turn off or will it turn on and search for devices to connect to?+
If you previously had the older TC setup to broadcast a wireless network, then it will continue to do so unless you set the Wireless Mode to "Off" in AirPort Utility.
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Wireless tab (just below icons) > Wireless Mode = Off.
Also, if you are connecting the older TC to the new TC using ethernet, you would run an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the new TC to the WAN (circle icon) port on the old TC. The old TC would need to configured as a "bridge"
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet Icon > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode).
+2. Should I connect the two using ethernet, which I understand is a much faster connection, or do I need to connect the two using USB to use the older TC purely as additional storage?+
Use ethernet configured as above. USB will not work in this type of application.
+3. Is there anyway to manually turn off the WIFI functionality of the older TC to act as an external drive only?+
    See #1 above.
+4. If the WIFI cannot be turned off, will it interfere with the signals of the new TC? And do I have to join it to the network at this point or will the ethernet or USB connections override and shutdown the WIFI?+

You haven't mentioned whether you plan to use the TC for Time Machine backups or other file storage. Can you clarify on how you plan to use the old TC?

  • Can't use the same JVMPI min=max heap setting for JVMTI

I have a DLL that serves as both PI and TI library. When using PI, I can specify -XmsNNNNm -XmxNNNNm but the same setting would not work when switching to TI. I must lower the heap setting by as much as 725M on a Windows box. On UNIX, I only need to lower it by 5-20M depending on machines. It does not matter when JVM 1.5 or 1.6 is used.
I do specify a base address for the Windows library.
    Any help is appreciated.

bspike, are you sure your DLL is actually getting loaded at the rebase address? The rebase address is just a hint; if the address space is occupied at DLL load time (maybe by another DLL), Windows will load your DLL somewhere else. I'm wondering if this could be happening in your case, and the DLL is getting loaded in a bad spot. I usually use vadump.exe (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3fe0961b-ea72-40eb-a052-f68bac5a8ec1&displaylang=en to print, for a particular process, where the DLLs actually get loaded:
    c:\hotspot>vadump -sv -p 3624
    Symbols loaded: 00400000 : 00AF6000 FIREFOX.EXE
    Symbols loaded: 7C900000 : 7C9B0000 ntdll.dll
    Symbols loaded: 7C800000 : 7C8F5000 kernel32.dll
    Symbols loaded: 600B0000 : 60119000 js3250.dll
    Symbols loaded: 60170000 : 60197000 nspr4.dll
    ....etc.
Even if it's not the specific problem I mentioned above, vadump might help diagnose the reason a large contiguous region isn't available.

  • Time Machine storage for backups.

    Hello
Quick question: I've been using an external USB drive as a Time Machine backup disk since I bought my MacBook Pro 13" in 2009. The MBP hard drive is 250GB whilst the external hard drive is 80GB. I've only just reached the point where the MBP's disk has just over 80GB of data on it.
Now I know that Time Machine has been deleting older backups on the external drive for some time because the disk is full. I realise that it deletes older backups because it is the multiple versions of backups that are taking up the drive space.
However, what happens when the total amount of data on the MBP drive exceeds the storage capacity of the external drive? I haven't asked it to exclude anything from the backups and as Time Machine makes a complete copy of everything on the MBP drive, how does it manage when the external drive is not as big as the data on the computer's drive?
I do realise that I may just have to buy another bigger external drive to deal with what was an inevitable problem but I'm curious as to how Time Machine is continuing to back up without any apparent problem.
    Thanks for your help.

    Thank Shootist007
    I know.
What I was curious about was why Time Machine wasn't telling me that and was happily going on to do backups without any error messages.
Thomas's reply probably explains why so before I do get to that point, I will go and get another hard drive...
    Cheers

  • Storage for working and storage for backup

Hello friends and neighbours, here I am again with a
I am considering to give thunderbolt storage to my coming Mac Pro, which I tended to use mainly for checking very large images, editing some of them slightly, printing and storing some of them. Second is to build DVDs from foreign sources, not very narrow in time and less often.
Now I thaught to set a Promise cabin beside to the Pro with a RAID 0 for fast access and a RAID 1 for temporarely backup, until the outcome of projects is given to optical storage and must be deletet because of disk ”full“. I assume working 2-3 TB (the rest of space remains free) can be enough in each categorie.
Can a Promise been splitted to two RAIDs (half 0, half 1)? Because of the private kind of my work and equipment the price should not rise much over 2500$/€, best below.
    ~ Best regards, Karl

WIthout getting an answer is the question obsolet.

  • Do I need to buy more storage for backup?

Should I do more? Here is what I have so far for my iMac OS 10.5.8:
    1. 2 GB internal hard drive storage
    2. 2 terabyte external hard drive (Seagate - being shipped by Anazon.com)
    3. Time Machine
    4. 1 terabyte Time Capsule, wireless automatic continuous backup
Today at Best Buy I almost bought a 2 terabyte small ext. hard drive only/just for videos, pictures, and music. When I saw that it was a USB connection and not Firewire I decided not to buy it. But do I need to have that extra backup?
I was told that the external hard drive would be better than CD or DVD storage because with those two, you can only add more items five times, no more, whereas with an external small ”passport“ hard drive, I would not be similarly restricted.
    I welcome all opinions

do we speak of backup or archive, Lorna?
Timemachine/TM is a clever system to get back the version before the version before the actual version of a project..
TM will, when drive is 'full', start erasing oldest 'versions' ...
    but it doesn't do archiving.
    and here it get's philosophically..
books from the 13th century are still existing and are readable (if you 'speak' Latin...)
or movies from the 1920ies are 'readable' (= last week, the 'original' version of Metropolis had its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival) ..
ANY document, starting from the mid20th cent will be lost soon.. read the phrase 'digital dark ages'.. all your .docs, music, fotos, videos are 'digital' .. on 'media'. stumbling into probs with long-time-storage and compatibility.. anyone remembering 5¼" Floppys? beta video cassettes? Sonys MD music-disks?
a usb2-1.5TB drive is good for archiving, why not?
every once-in-a-while (6 months?) you manually drag in Finder the content of your backup-drive onto your archive drive. or, in Finder, you copy the 'originals' from any iT/iP/iM-Lib onto your archive drive.. for sure, you can backup this archive... and every 5-8 years, don't forget to upgrade and switch from SCSII to firewire to usb3 to eSata to ... and convert from DOS to fat to hfs to ntfs to ...
and speaking of 'backup + archiving' plus 'from Hawaii' - keep the archive.drive in a dry place ..
    (sorry, my corny humor)....

  • Data storage for Master data.

    Hi
Would like to know what is the limit in terms of number of records a master data table can hold or should hold.
If there is a possibility that master data vol will increase very significantly then is it advisable to create an ODS to store the master data vol .....
    Please advise
    Kind Regards,
    Kate

    Dear Kate,
There is not really any limit for this. Since this is dependent on the database storage space. and especially for master data, it wont exceed as you think.
    Thanks,

  • Using an External HD with USB 1.1 for Media (Movie files) storage?

    Many thanks for your attention.
For a Media Storage (mostly movies) HD, I ordered a Maxtor OneTouch II with Firewire and the company mistakenly sent me one with USB 1.1 instead.
I remember reading that for Media Storage, only the Firwire connection will work (for Macs). Or that there are a lot of problems with USB.
Before sending this HD back to company, just checking to see if this is so.
Also (when I get the correct Drive), I've heard that in order to store a Movie File, (a movie on Final Cut Pro or iMovie, etc.), the External Hard Drive MUST be formatted as a "Mac Extended (Journaled)" Hard Drive.
Posting here for people's thoughts, opinions (hopefully not contradictory).
    - Ross

    Send it back.
Even USB 2.0 isn't good for media. Fast transfer rate, but not a sustained one.
USB 1 won't work AT ALL.
    RETURN!

  • Using JRockit Real Time with Large Heap

I want to know if JRockit Real Time can work with extremely large heap, e.g. 100G, to provide effective deterministic GC, before proceeding with evaluation for my application.
    Thanks in advance!
    Wing

    Hi Wing,
In general, extremely large heaps can make all GCs slower. This is true for Deterministic GC as well. However, it is very application dependent. It is above our standard recommendation, but you can download JRockit Real Time and give it a try.

  • Seagate ST8000AS0002 8TB 5900RPM 128MB Cache SATA3 - for Backup Data Only. Are there any compatibility issues with an older  3,1 Apple Mac Pro 8-Core 2.8GHz (4-Core x 2) ?

Finally mass storage drives are being released. The Seagate ST8000AS0002 8.0 TB 5900RPM has just been released in Australia and I was advised to check on any compatibility issues, being that my 3,1 Mac Pro is an old, but working fine machine.
I have read there are possible issues with using HDs greater than 2TB with the MP 3,1 . But checking with OWC, they say the Seagate 4.0 TB Solid State Hybrid Drive is compatible for use with the MP 3,1.
So can the hardware and operating system handle an 8.0 TB of this sort ?

The problem is with formatting the large disk. The Mac can see and use them if formatted for a Mac
    Format large disks
That bug appeared in 10.8.4, and has not yet been fixed.
using a Disk Utility from any older Mac OS X, including the 10.6 DVD (if your Mac can boot from it) or any saved Installer DVD or thumb drive will work.
Another work-around is to move that drive to an external enclosure and Erase it there (provided your enclosure is modern enough to deal with drives over 2.2TB.
