Using a studio display with MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro and an older 17" Studio Display with a DVI-D male connector. What do I need to drive the studio display from my MBP? And where do I get them?

Try Monoprice - http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=5106&seq=1&format=2 - or just do a search if that's not the one you need.

    Hello chrispyw,
If your content is still being displayed incorrectly, I would check the resolution setting for the built in display with this article:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
If it keeps happening whenever you use AirPlay then I would use this section of the following article to reset the display system:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • External display with MacBook Pro in Lion

    Hello,
Yesterday I bought a Mac OS X Lion, and I found one annoying feature of the system - working on a MacBook Pro (MBP), and very often use an external display, with that do not use display in the MBP. When connecting an external monitor doing video processing, and this activity I was used by Mac OS X Snow Leopard to open the MBP there wasaccess of air to cool the computer. After installing the Lion was the fact that even at very small opening MBP is switched to internal MBP display. This is the functionality of the Lion off somewhere or somehow set? I looked in Preferences, and I have found nothing. Thank you in advance for information on how to solve this problem.

I own a mac mini that stays connected to the 52" LCD 120hz in my living room. The image is perfect, and fits just fine. I did a mini-display port to dvi and got a monster cable adapter for dvi to hdmi which too it to my tv. I did have to go into the tv and set the tv to overscan I think on the image to make it fit and you will have to adjust the resolution on the computer. I can say the colors are darker on the tv and this is just due to the nature of the screen size. Newer LED tvs may be better, but mine is only 1 1/2 years old.
For an external display, just go to the educators link, select your college and you get $100 off. My wife is an educator and I am back in college so it's no hassle. Or they just ask for an ID. I own 2 24" ACD and they are nice. I do photography and a screen calibration is a must. Once done you'll be happy. And docking with the laptop is handy.

  • Compatibility of Past-Years Cinema Display with Macbook Pro Late 2011, and other displays.

    Hello.
I'm inquiring about the compatibility of Apple cinema displays from years past with Macbook Pro 15" Late 2011.
For instance, will all Apple Cinema Displays from, say, 2008 onwards work with my mbook?
They can be had fairly cheaply on the used market.
What is the earliest model that will be compatible?
I've never had an external monitor for my lappies, so I am very clueless. I know DVI is a common connection, but there is no DVI port on my lappie.
I would also be very curious as to what would be suitable displays from other manufacturers, particularly Samsung and Dell.
The size doesn't have to be big, 20-23 inch is fine, I am more worried about good resolution [no obvious pixellation]
If a screen is big, but has good resolution that's even better of course, but I'm not ****-bent on a big thing.
The mbook 15" screen is just a bit squashy for home use really.
Thank you very much in advance for any advice.
Feel free to link me to other threads as an answer, I have done a bit of searching around, but still confused.

I have the same MBP and recently bought a 23" cinema display on Craigslist for $140.  It works great.  I had a display port to DVI adapter and it worked fine.  Built a stand to hold the laptop vertically so it's out of the way.  Don't know about older displays but anything with DVI should work fine.
The screen size and resolution are great for photo editing.  I now have the best of both worlds, a display that rivals my wife's iMac and portability.

  • Hi - How do I connect an HDTV as a second monitor to Thunderbolt display with macbook pro in clamshell mode?

I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro in clamshell mode connected to a Thunderbolt Display with the built in Thunderbolt cable. I want to then connect an HDTV via the Thunderbolt port at the back of the Thunderbolt display. I already had a  cable that I thought would work which turns out to be a MiniDisplay port to HDMI cable and therefore not compatible with Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort not being the same technology although it uses the same port - although I'm not an expert !!) So far a web search has provided me with the only solution being using a Thunderbolt dock or storage that has multiple Thunderbolt ports and then  using that to daisychain inbetween the Thunderbolt Diplay and the HDTV. The cheapest solution I can find for this would be about £250. Surely not ??!!!!
Many thanks for any comments - Nik

You could also use aThunderbolt dock with HDMI, such as:

  • Installation of 27" cinema display with macbook pro silver key and bootcamp

For everyone out there who may be interested in using the new 27" cinema display with an older Macbook Pro Intel with silver keys and bootcamp.
    What is needed:
    1. Apple 27" cinema display.
    2. Macbook pro Intel silver key model
    3. Altona Dual Link DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter (Model AT-DP400)
    4. Bootcamp 3.1 drivers from Mac OSX Snow Leopard V10.6.3(retail)
    Procedure:
    1. Update your display software on the Mac OS side. Apple has posted an update on their software downloads page, "LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0" After doing so, make sure that the 27" CinDisp is operating correctly and you can change the brightness from the system settings.
    2. On the Windows side, install the bootcamp 3.1 drivers. These are on the Snow Leopard distribution CD. However, there is a bug in the .msi installer that causes the installation to go into an endless loop. This must be resolved during the installation of the drivers. The following article discribes how to do this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2305631&tstart=0
    3. After you have successfully installed the bootcamp 3.1 drivers, then install Apple's bootcamp update: "Apple Magic Trackpad and 27-inch LED Cinema Display Update for Windows 32 bit".
    Good luck, it works!

  • Can't detect some external displays with Macbook Pro 17"

My macbook pro 17" connects just fine to my Apple Cinema display. But twice now I've tried to use it for presentations where I am connecting to either a video projector or a plasma screen through some sort of switchbox installed in the room. There's a VGA cable I'm supposed to connect to, and I use my DVI-VGA adaptor for that. But the macbook never recognizes the external monitor. In one case, everytime I hit "detect displays" i would see a brief bit of noise on the external screen like it was about to connect, but then nothing -- and Display Preferences showed no evidence of any connected external monitor. In both cases, I know the host systems generally handle Macs just fine. Is there something different about a Macbook Pro with dual-DVI? A design flaw or a mysterious switch that needs to be set right? Or maybe there's a glitch in my specific macbook??

  • Calibrating 23" display with macbook Pro

I am using a macbook pro with and 2nd monitor (apple 23" cinema HD). I have tried using a Pantone Huey Pro to calibrate the monitors, but it doesn't seem to work. Even after i have run the tool, the images look very different on each display. I have (at least i think i have) changed the colour profile on each to be the same (adobe RGB) for testing purposes and still see a difference in the two displays, its driving me mad as i dont know which one is correct.
    Can someone please help?

Yes, all three cables are plugged in. The DVI connection, the USB, and the Firewire. - Interestingly, I was moving the machine around and unplugged the monitor power cable while the computer was asleep - then when I plugged the power cord back in, the computer woke up - monitor is now recognized and I have the options group. Go figure. So I suppose everyone can try this and see if it works. No more flashing lights.

  • 30" display with MacBook Pro--how to resolve sparking pixels?

I'm seeing sparkling pixels in large black or dark gray areas on my 30" display (bought in Dec 2005). when using it with a new MBP (2.0Ghz, 2GB).
I didn't see those when using it with my stock G5 dual-core 2.0GHz.
Should I address this at the display level or with the MBP itself? Or could it be a bad DVI cable?
Has anyone solved this problem with SwitchResX?
    MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I'm seeing this exact problem myself... though it could be the display, thank god it's not!!!!! I got my display for Christmas but didn't have anything to run it until I got my MBP for B-Day in Feb.
SO we're both looking for an answer.
JTS... I'm seeing red pixel sparklies in dark fully saturated areas.. not all the time, just when the MBP has been running for 10 minutes or so. If I put it to sleep for a while and it cools down the display looks fine but as soon as the MBP starts heating up I start to see the sparking.
I'm wondering if this happened on a brand new never updated MBP... ie: could it be driver related, where they fixed the 'tearing' issue that Intel Macs were having but broke our Cinema Display drivers?????
I haven't had a chance to set up a boot disk with a clean install from the original installer disk to test this out but when I do I'll post my results here.
BTW I'm also getting the hissing noise that other MBP owners have complained about and some fan noise or hard drive noise from the near left corner. The Mirror widget trick works for the hissing but I'm wondering if the root problem is related to the Sparking we're seeing... do you also get the hissing noise?

  • Apple display with Macbook Pro

I'm thinking about getting an Apple display for use with a Macbook pro. I'm looking for any observations from those of you using the same configuration. Where do you put your Macbook while using the monitor? Can you sit it on top of the base foot of the monitor? How well does the monitor work with the laptop? Thanks for any input. Scott

I have run my Mac notebook sitting on the aluminum foot of a 30" ACD. That big aluminum slug makes a great heatsink that draws all the heat out of the notebook. The fan never comes on in this configuration for me. The only precaution I take is to put a thin cloth (or sometimes just a piece of paper when I forget my cloth) down on the ACD foot first just for the sake of avoiding cosmetic damage, like scratches, to either surface.

  • External display with MacBook Pro.

What is a good external display to use with the MacBook Pro? I hooked it up to my TV (Samsung HD) and it did not look great. Is there any other option aside from the DVI (or whatever it is called) to VGA to get better quality?
I do photography and want to have a display running as I shoot at trade shows. I know a apple display would be great, but I would just get an iMac instead.
    Thoughts welcome,
    Todd.

  • Can Use 'any' DVI monitor with Macbook Pro?

I just want a simple 20" or 22" monitor as a 2nd screen for my Macbook Pro 2008 Unibody
Can I use any monitor as long as it says "DVI"? and then get the mini-display > DVI adaptor to run it from the macbook?
For example any from this list here would be ok : http://computers.shop.ebay.co.uk/Desktop-PCs-Monitors-/171957/i.html?trkparms=65%253A2%257C66%253A1%257C39%253A1&rt=nc&_nkw=dvi%20monitor&_catref=1&_ dmpt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_Monitors&_sc=1&_sop=2&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14. l1581&pgn=2
Would these work ok? as i dont need the huge 27" Apple display as its out of my price range..

    pitchfork wrote:
Would a VGA monitor work with the mini display > VGA adaptor? or is this not as good quality?
It might, but VGA is an older analog standard and DVI is digital, so DVI should produce a better picture.
Sorry for all the questions! Also is DVI-D still compatible (whatever that means?)
According to Wikipedia, DVI-A is DVI to analog and DVI-D is full digital. So DVI-D is what you would be using anyway, if you were connecting to a DVI port on a monitor.

  • How do I use the App store with macbook pro and mac pro

I currently use the app store with the mac book, but want to buy (share?) apps and music with the mac pro.
I can't find anything that specifically outlines how this works.
I use SplashID with the macbook and an iPhone, and want to use it (and sync it) on the mac pro as well.
If you buy apps for a macbook, can you use them on a second machine, or do you need to buy it a second time?

Your license from the MAS allows you to download and install the apps on as many Macs as you own or have under your control (institutional or employer supplied Macs.) The Mac should to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard or Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion. Open the MAS app on the Mac Pro and sign into your account to have access to download all of your previous purchases in the Purchased pane.
Simple apps can also be dragged & dropped over a network connection from the MacBook to the Mac Pro.

  • Using Hybrid Hard Drives with Macbook Pro ???

    Hello,
I am looking for any news or answers, if it is possible to use one of the very new Hybrid Hard Drives from Seagate ("Momentum 5400 PSD") or Samsung ("Spinpoint MH") with Macbook/Macbook Pro ???
What i have read so far, seems only ugly Windows Vista mentioned everywhere, but no word about Macbook and/or Mac OS X :-(((
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

I read on the Seagate site that the drive would work but that you wouldn't get all of the hybrid functionality you're paying for. (lost the link.... sorry).
The one I've read about is the Momentus 7200.2 Laptop Hard Drive. Here is a tech article about that:
    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2119528,00.asp
I think I'm going to go for this one, though I am a little concerned that it won't be as quite as the Apple installed drive.
