ok i am an idiot. i have a usa g4 desktop (digital audio) mod#m5183, 100 - 120v~/200-240v - 8a/4.5a, 50-60hz
i just brought it to the uk and plugged it in using a plug adapter but without manually switching the power switch from '110' to '230'. there was a 'crack' and a puff of smoke. i flipped the switch to '230' and tried again but it does not power up. have i fried the computer? is there something i can do (besides getting a new brain for myself)?

Sad to say, but you may have ruined some of the components. Some Mac power supplies have an internal fuse. You have to remove the supply & open the housing. A new fuse could solve the problem. It's also possible that your power supply is "fried", which requires a new supply. If you replace the supply, then hopefully, your processor board (& other components) is not also "fried".
To get replacement parts, besides eBay, you can join join LEM-Swap for buying & selling Mac stuff. http://lowendmac.com/lists/swap.html However, you might be better off buying a used replacement Mac for less than the cost of a new power supply, processor board & possibly RAM.

I've been using my North American Powerbook in the UK for 1.5 years now since moving here from Canada. There is no stress, not even with the lack of a '£' on the keyboard since alt-3 gives me that on the US layout. I bought a £2 power plug converter from Tesco and that was the total of my expense.
The only (admittedly unlikely) problem is Her Majesty's Customs - an Apple Powerbook is way above the tourist duty exempt limit (which I think is laughably low - less than £200). Importing a Powerbook will make is liable to 17.5% VAT +excise duty +handling fee. If your parents try to bring it through the 'Nothing to Declare' line and get randomly picked out they could be in a bit of trouble with the law. Of course this is very unlikely but it is the reality - perhaps it would not be a good idea for them to come through customs with a big shiny unopened expensive computer box for Her Majesty's servants to have a good butchers at .

How can I view and convert .264 files from my security cameras for use on my Mac and the web?

My security cams record in a .264 file format HD. I want to view, edit, etc on my Mac, what software will do that and are there any easy tips to do this? I'm new to Mac's so I'm not sure what is the best format to convert to? mp4? Suggestions?

What is a UK adaptor? If you mean will your iPad charge using the wall sockets there then yes if you get a plug adapter to fit the wall socket. You do not need a transformer.

I bought the Mac Dictate program Version 3 latest one out there at Best Buy. Bless their hearts they tried for 6 hours at no charge to me to make it work. They gave me my money back. It continued to crash.

The popup message always warns to do a backup first since there is the potential of lost data if the upgrade fails.

I'm using Word for Mac. Though there are various instructions on the Internet for modifying the templates, none make sense to me. They instruct to do something I can't follow. I change a template but can't save it to the template folder.

OK, I try to change a template using Word for Mac version 14.3.4 2011 edition.
I make a change to the template but am unable to save the darned thing to the template folder; it asks for a file name like it's a new document. I want to change the blasted template but if I can't save it as a modified template, I've accomplished nothing.
Does anyone have a solution?

The Apple IDs from @mac.com and @me.com (Older MobileMe and more recent iCloud Names) are also Valid AIM Screen names.
Any other sort of Apple ID is not a Valid AIM Name.
A Google ID that is associated with Google Mail Account (And has "Talk" enable on your Google Settings) can be used in iChat as Jabber Name/ID. (Google Run Jabber server).
Jabber and AIM are different IM Services and it is not easy or straight forward to add Buddies from one Service to the Buddy List of another. (As A Starting point consider it "impossible")
iChat 4 and 5 have links to the registration page of @Mac.com here with a "Get an iChat Account" button in the add (Account) screen (You select @mac.com or MobileMe and then press the Button - Choosing AIM and then pressing the button used to lead to the AIM registration page but AIM moved their page).
Apple IDs can be any valid email (or an @mac.com or iCloud registration)
Therefore you could make a Google ID into an Apple ID.
However this will not be a valid AIM Screen Name the way @mac.com or MobileMe/iCloud ones are.

When we double click on the index.app file, the application is working perfectly in Mac 10.6.7 at our office. But if the same index.app file is double clicked in Mac 10.6.7 at out clients location, its not opening. For your information the client is able to open this same application by double clicking on index.swf file. The main problem is that client is not able to open the application using index.app file at their office whereas we are able to do so at our office. Can anyone give some suggestions to sort this problem?

The most common reason is different versions of Flash, or different versions of web browsers used. Some users may elect to not have Flash installed at all because of the processor overhead of Flash. If you are going to make an application for a client, check what operating system and browser versions they are using first. Then determine if a stand alone application is required, or if they have the necessary plugins to run specific browser enhanced code.
P.S. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control. Mac is the shorthand for Macintosh, the operating system and computers made by Apple Inc.

You need two names that can login into AIM.
In iChat you can use the Get an iChat Account which shows after you use the Plus Button in Accounts.
This will give you a free @mac.com Name
AIM Names are also free.

How do I find iPod's MAC and the encryption level used to login?

I have a wireless network with WEP security Wireless Encryption Level 128 bit and also Wireless Network Access activated.
I need to add the MAC of the iPod. How do you get the iPod's MAC?
Also how do I know iPod is using 128 bits instead 64bits in the encryption level?
Does anybody know this?
I cannot connect to the network I disabled the Wireless Network Access and still cannot login, the password is correct and I am thinking that the iPod is using 64 bit with WEP which is totally useless when you have a network already configured.
I will appreciate your help.

You'll find the +iPod touch's+ MAC address in Settings > General > About > Wi-Fi Address.
The +iPod touch+ will use 128/40bit WEP depending on what you have the router set to.
Are you entering the password in the correct case? You may need to put $ infront of your password.
