Using Airport Express as Wireless Repeater upstairs?

Greetings,
I have a recent Netgear WNDR4000 WIFI router situated in my home "network closet" downstairs. I'm noticing that sometimes I loose connection upstairs and even though it is probably not the greatest placement to keep the router in this box, that is what I have to work with. (All ethernet connections end up in thies area neatly)
This particular router has a repeating feature you can use with other products so essentially am I correct in understanding that if I place the airport express upstairs and plug it into ethernet 9Tied into the WNDR4000), it will then repeat the 2.4 and 5Ghz signals it is already sending?

Most likely not for two reasons: 1) Most non-Apple routers are NOT WDS-compatible so there is no guarentee that the AirPort Express can extend the wireless range of the Netgear via a wireless connection, and 2) Although the AirPort Express supports both 2.4 & 5 GHz radio bands, it can only operate on one or the other ... so, even if it could extend the Netgear, it would only extend one of the Netgear's radios.

Airport Express as wireless repeater

Hi all, just wondering if anyone could give me a hand. I have just bought an Airport Express (not arrived just yet) not just for streaming music, but for extending my network. I am a student and have just moved into my new house. The internet here already is fine, the people here before me have given me the password to the encryption but not to the account or the router. This will all change in September, however. The router is a Netgear DG834PN. My iMac is having difficulty connecting to the network, I think this is due to the distance it is away from the router, as when I connect the iMac upstairs (nearer to it) it connects fine, hence the desire for a wireless repeater. Will I be able to use the Airport Express as a repeater? If not, what must I do? Must I get an Apple wireless router as well? Will a time capsule be fine? Please remember I cannot access the DG834PN's graphical interface at all.

You will need to run an ethernet cable from the netgear to your airport express. then setup the airpor express as an access point. As you don't have access to the WebUI of the router then you wont be able to setup the airport express as a WDS or wireless repeater.
The other option would be to connect a timecapsule to the router via ethernet. Setup the time capsule as a bridge to the router. Then you would be able to extend the wireless network with an airport express.

@JoeMY - If it is "joined" to the FritzBox then it won't work, it only works with Apple routers connected via Ethernet or as the main router.

Yes, if the wireless network is an Apple one or a WDS capable router that is compatible with Apple's WDS.
The other option is to install a PCI card.

Using Airport Express for wireless printing and possibly streaming music

I have had the toughest time figuring out this Airport Express. It seems there are so many different ways to set it up. I've tried to read forums but just can't seem to wrap my head around what I need to do. I tried awhile back to join my network wirelessly but was having problems.
I don't really care about extending my current network. My internet service is through Verizon Fios and the router they provided works just fine and don't have any issues with connecting anywhere in the house. I bought the AE to be able to print wirelessly and stream music from my iMac in another room.
So to print wirelessly obviously the printer has to be plugged in to the AE, but does the AE have to be plugged into my router? Or can I have the AE anywhere in the house wherever the printer is? When I print, am I using my existing network or do I have to disconnect a computer from the wireless network and access a 2nd network to be able to print?
My first priority is to print wirelessly. If I can get it to work It'd be cool to stream music from my iMac. Obviously the AE needs to be where the speakers are, but again, does the AE have to plugged in to the router? And again, is this done through my existing network? Or do I have to stream music through a 2nd network? I apologize if i'm asking the same questions that have been asked in previous forums, I just haven't been successful thus far so wanted to see what response or tips I could get. Thanks.
My existing network has "WPA Personal" security set up on it if you need to know that.

If you configure the Express correctly to "join" your FIOS wireless network, you can position it anywhere that it will receive a good, strong wireless signal.
The trick to setting the Express up to "join" is that you must choose exactly the same type of security for the Express as your main router is using. This is tricky when you are using devices from two different manufacturers because they often use different names for the same thing.
For example, when you say that the FIOS is setup to WPA Personal, we really need more information. There's usually a TKIP or AES associated with WPA. You have two choices on the Express for WPA settings, WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal. We can only guess which one might be the correct match for your FIOS network and if you don't choose the right setting, the Express cannot join the network and you have to start the configuration all over again from scratch and try the other setting.
Does your Fios have a setting for WPA2 Personal? Some manufacturers label this WPA2-PSK (AES). Or, maybe you find that your FIOS is using WPA-PSK (TKIP), which is the same thing as Apple WPA/WPA2 Personal. It's confusing. That's why we tell users to choose wireless gear from the same manufacturer. It's much easier when two devices talk the same language.

If you have a compatible printer plugged into the USB port on the AirPort Express and have "installed" the printer by setting it up, you will be able to print over your existing wireless network.
First things first. You need to get the Express setup to "join" correctly and get a green light. Then, tackle the printer setup.

Can't use Airport Express after upgrading to Leopard

I use Airport Express for wireless printing and AirTunes via powered speakers/hifi. It was working very reliably until I upgraded to Leopard. Now, I am unable to use Airport Express. I get the blinking orange light, but when I scan with Airport Utility, Airport Express is not detected. Manual setup is grayed out, so I can't set it up at all. I am using Airport Utility Version 5.2.2 (522.3), and there does not seem to be any updates or patches to apply at the moment. I have tried on my iMac G5 and MacBook, with the same result on both computers.
I am also reading that many others are having problems with Airport Express after upgrading to Leopard, perhaps not with my specific hardware configuration, but this is very disappointing.
I am open to suggestions to try a few things to get it working, so any help is appreciated.

From the Mail menu, select "Preferences". Hit the Accounts tab. Select the Account. Under Account Information, reapply the user name and password.
Check with the provider if the account needs authentication. This is in the Advanced tab. Usually just a repeat of user name and password.

It appears that you may have "join a wireless network" and "extend a wireless network" mixed up a bit.
The Express can "join" virtually any wireless network produced by any manufacturer's router if it is provided with the correct settings:
name of the wireless network
the correct wireless security settings
and correct password.
"Join" is normally used for AirTunes or to connect a USB printer to the Express for remote printing.
But, the Express does not provide any additional wirless coverage when it "joins" another wireless network.
Apple's "Extend a wireless network" feature, which was introduced about 5 years ago, allows the Express to connect to another Apple "n" wireless router and then "repeat" or "extend" the wireless signal....providing more wireless coverage in the area where the Express is located.
This is a proprietary setting. Apple says it will not work with devices from other manufacturers. To our knowledge, this is correct.
Prior to 2007, Apple used a setting called WDS to allow the Express to be configured to provide more wireless coverage. Attempts were made by a number of manufacturers to standardize the WDS settings, but things were never finalized.
The result is that Apple's older "b/g" routers were sometimes compatible with WDS settings from another manufacturer. There were a handful of products....5 or 6, as I recall....that were said to work. Some did, some didn't. Linksys had a couple of models, Netgear had one, SMC another, etc. Extremely limited.
Since WDS was never adopted as an industry standard, manufacturers developed their own WDS settings. Compatibility was extemely limited and unreliable. That continues to this day with WDS.
Bottom line....It is always best to stick with the same manufacturer throughout your network as far as routing is concerned.
If you have an newer "n" Apple router like an AirPort Extreme, the Express can extend the wireless as can along Extreme. If your Extreme is dual band, and you want to extend both bands, then you need another Extreme.
Another responder suggested to someone that they could connect the AirPort Express to a router via Ethernet. What exactly would that achieve?
That is a completely different subject since this discussion is about extending a wireless network using wireless only.

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private" wireless network.

Apple calls this configuration a ProxySTA.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility.

Using Airport Express to extend an existing wired/wireless Dlink network

Our network uses a Dlink router which must be located in the basement. Our home office Apple computers are wired, and the wireless Apple laptop is almost always used in the living room, directly above the Dlink, so no signal strength problems there. However, the wireless signal does not reach as far as the home office. It's only 20-25 feet away on the main floor, but for some reason, probably structural, the wireless signal doesn't penetrate.
Now I need to extend wireless access capability to the home office, so that I can use the iPod Touch in the office. I've read through a number of posts, and haven't found one that exactly matches this issue.
The information about joining an existing network has this sentence in it:
"Or you can use AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme to extend the range of an existing AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express network by creating a Wireless Distribution System (WDS)."
The existing network I have isn't an AX network. And it's both wired and wireless. And one of the detailed posts explained why a WDS was not the best way to go. Plus I'm confused by references to "base stations" which seem to refer to something that looks like a Time Capsule, not to an AX.
If AX will do what I want it to, I'm envisioning plugging it (all by its lonesome) in to a wall outlet in the hallway outside the home office. That's based both on what I want and what the salesperson said AX could do when I explained what was wanted.
The Dlink network has been working beautifully for months, and I don't want to do anything to screw it up! That includes even opening up the AX utility software until I know exactly what to do.
Can I do the setup (once it's explained!) on the wired computer? If I have to connect the AX to the network as part of the setup, can I use the 5-port switch that extends the wired connection the extra two feet to the computer (and also provides the wired network connection for the main printer)? Or should I take the laptop downstairs and connect the AX directly to the Dlink router?

Yes, this will work great.
+I'd never heard of ethernet powerline adapters, which sound very cool but are not wireless per se - you need a cable to connect the computer with at the far end, and it's wireless capability that I'm trying to create in the home office.+
Rather than hooking a computer up at one end, you could hook up the AirPort Express at one one and setup wireless that way. You won't need the adapters in this case since you have access to the switch. You may have need sometime in the future to get an ethernet signal to another part of the house, so keep this option in mind.
Here is how to setup the AirPort Express. You will use AirPort Utility, which should already be on your Mac Pro. Its located Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities.
Temporarily, connect the AirPort Express (AX) directly to your computer with a short ethernet cable to set it up. When you have the configuration done, you can disconnect the cable and move the AX to the location where it's needed.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to enter a name and device password for the device and choose your time zone, etc.
Then click the AirPort icon in the row of icons at the top of the setup page.
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode....Create a wireless netork
Wireless Network Name....Exact same name as your D-Link wireless network name
Radio Mode....802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
Channel...Automatic (see note* at bottom)
Wireless Security...exact same setting as D-Link network
Wireless Password....exact same setting as D-Link network
Click the Internet icon in the row of icons
At the bottom of the page, make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)". This setting allows the AX to work in tandem with the D-Link.
Update to save settings.
*Automatic will usually work well for this. Ideally, you want the D-Link and AX to be on channels that are least 5 channels apart. Automatic will usually choose an open channel, but you may need to manually set the channels on both routers for this step.

Unfortunately, Apple's "extend" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers if you are trying to "extend" using wireless only.
It is extremely unlikely that this feature would work with a router from another manufacturer using wireless only.

Here is what I have and what I wish to do. I have a Mac Mini intel duo with Airport extreme card Connected to road runner via a ethernet router. My wife has a window running XP with out airport extreme. Can I use airport express to share the internet with my wife's computer by using an ethernet cable from my wife's computer to the airport express, remotely to (another room). No that will not work.
The Ethernet port on the AirPort Express (AX) is active ONLY when the AX uses WDS to wirelessly connect to a network.
OS X's Internet Sharing (via Mac mini) is not compatible with WDS.

No, you cannot extend wireless from a non-apple router. The Apple routers use proprietary method of wireless repeater.
However if you plug the Express into the WAP or main router then you can setup express as another WAP. And also plug in the printer.
Please note this does not make a usb printer airprint capable.. that is purely dependent on the printer and is only accessible when the printer is full network compliant and connects by wireless. So to get iOS devices to print you will need a print app or a network print replacement for airprint. An example is Printopia.
