Using airport with hi speed internet

Hi everyone. I recently got hi speed internet which works when the ethernet cable connects my G4 laptop and the modem cable. I wanted a wireless connection so I disconnected the ethernet from my laptop and hooked it up to the airport so that the airport and the modem were now connected. This isnt working. Anyone able to offer any advice and help? Thanks.

What kind of Airport device are you using?
Can you see the Airport network from your laptop? Can you get an IP address from the Airport? How do you have the Airport configured?
You really need to give us some more information so we can help you.

How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

You can set up daily time limits for each computer that connects using wireless, but it is not possible to do this when a computer is connecting directly using a wired Ethernet connection.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Manual Setup
Click the Access Control tab below the icons
    Select Timed Access
For more details on this, click the Help menu at the top of the screen and enter the following phrase into the search box:

A more sophisticated approach would be to use a service provided by OpenDNS. From your computer, this would allow you to monitor web sites visited, and block any unsuitable sites. More info is here:

  • Extended Time Capsule WiFi network using Airport Express - Result: SLOW internet

    Hi everyone,
I have a little issue with my wireless internet.
Currently I have a 2Mbps down and 256Kbps up internet home. My ISP modem is connected directly to my Time Capsule (TC) and I don't have any problem when using the WiFi from the Time Capsule.
Recently, I wanted to extend my TC WiFi Range and bought an Airport Express to do that job. I've configured everything using the default/recommended settings.
The WiFi range was correctly extended but the problem is now, when I'm using Internet in the extended zone; it is REALLY slow!! I have done some speed tests in the extended zone with different devices (iPad, iPhone, PC, Mac...), and as result I have in average 128Kbps down and 50Kbps up!! You can imagine how this is annoying!
I tried to see the configurations of the Time Capsule and the AirPort Express and I didn't find anything that could explain that.
So, could someone please help me to fix that problem?
    Thank you all in advance,
    Mathieu
P.S.: FYI, The radio mode used for the wifi is 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible).

I'm not sure I necessarily agree at this point, as the two walls could cause significant Wi-Fi interference to prevent the extended network to perform well beyond the room the TC is in.
One way to quickly determine this is to make a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) calculation at the location of the AXn. SNR (in dB) = Signal (in dBm) - Noise (in dBm) and it represents the signal quality at that location from the router providing the wireless network.
To get an accurate picture, you will want to temporarily power-down the AXn since we only want to calculate the SNR for the TC at the location of the AXn.
You can get the Signal and Noise values directly from your Mac. Of course, it would be easier if your Mac is a laptop version, so I will assume at this point that it is.
While placing your Mac laptop near the AXn, open up the System Profiler. (ref: Apple icon in the menu bar > About This Mac > More info ... > Contents > Network > AirPort Interfaces > en1 > Current Network Information > Find your wireless network > Signal / Noise)
A SNR of 25+ dB would be desirable. For HD streaming performance, you will want an SNR of 35+ dB. Please post back your results.

  • Erasing TM using Airport Utility erases printing/internet settings, too?

If I use Airport Utility and under Disks choose Erase, will this erase all my internet and wireless printer settings too? (My fingers are crossed that this isn't the case...)
Also, I have my iMac connected via ethernet and wirelessly. When I turn off Airport then the ethernet connection kicks in automatically. Am I correct in assuming that if I were to erase everything and start new, I should just keep Airport off (= is there anything in Airport Utility that I should do)?
On a slightly different note, Safari doesn't work when I connect via ethernet (only FIrefox does). Is there anything that comes to anyone's mind that would cause this? I have turned off TCP/IP - Configure IPv6 but that makes no difference.
    Thank you so much.

So the TC is not the devise generating your network? You have another wireless router? Then ethernet only is fine. In Airport Utility change Wireless to "OFF" and Internet to "OFF (Bridge Mode)".
TC is the device that I use for my wireless network (I do not have another wireless router, only an AirExpress in the living room hooked up to speakers). Should I change Wireless to OFF in Airport Utility only during the initial re-backing up of my data? When finished with the re-backing up of my data, should I change the settings? Will this interfere with my printer and AirExpress in the other room?
I'm sorry, I didn't realize it was only connected temporarily for the initial full backup. Then don't change any setting other than, turning OFF Airport Preferences (NOT Airport Utility) while connected to ethernet. Then, yes, turn it back ON once the backup is complete and you are no longer connected via ethernet. The idea here is that by turning OFF Airport Prefs while connected via ethernet, you are assured of the fastest connection speed to the TC. Otherwise, wireless may still take precedence and slow down the transfer.
    In response to:
What do you mean by "Safari doesn't work?" Please be precise and as informative about the issue as possible.
It's strange... When connected by ethernet, Safari does not load. It just hangs. Firefox works without any problem. Since my iMac is right next to Time Capsule there is no need really for this computer to be connected wirelessly. I use wireless only because I prefer to use Safari. Any ideas at all?
Now, I'm a little confused. Do you intend on keeping the Mac connected to the TC via ethernet permanently since you say "no need really for this computer to be connected wirelessly."? If that's the case, then In Airport Utility set Wireless to "Create a wireless network" and Internet to "Share a public IP address".
    Cheers!

  • Using Airport with Parallels

    Hey there,
Can't find this topic anywhere but if you know the answer can you post it or direct me to the appropriate link as I'm desperate as its work related!!!! All I want to do is use parallels with airport, I can get it to work via the ethernet cable at work but not when I get home on the wireless.... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    Thanks in advance guys.

Hello Biglama. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It does work okay with VMWare and Windows XP, so I know it's functional.
Ok, you do know that there are two major differences here? Both the virtualization software and the hosted OS are completely different so that what may work under one combination is no real guarantee that it will work under another.
Did you have an opportunity to verify that other printers, connected to the AirPort, work in this VM, only that this particular plotter doesn't? Also, did you have a chance to post this issue on the Parallels support forum? Finally, if you still have VMware available, can you still access this plotter running a Windows 7 VM?

  • Using Airport with itunes and as a wireless router- I'm confused!

    Hello:
Since buying my Aiprort Express, I have used it to play music from itunes on my Windows 7 laptop, to my stereo. It works perfectly...or it did.
Last night, I configured the AE to work as a wireless modem so that when I am in a hotel with a wired internet connection, I can use my iphone and ipad. Again, this setup worked perfectly. However, now when I try to go back to scenario #1 and stream music to the stereo, the AE Utility can't find the AE and it has a blinking yellow light. I am using my original wireless network for scenario #1, not the new one created by the AE in scenario #2.
Can the AE be configured to do both of the above or did I wipe out the settings for scenario #1 when I set it up for scenario #2?
Thanks for any help you can provide. I'm not sure what to do since the Utility can't find the AE anymore.

You wiped out the settings for #1 when you set up the Express for #2.
You need to reset the Express back to factory default settings and then set it up again.
Power up the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button firmly for 10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Now you can configure it for #1 again.

  • I have a m2007 macbook connected to my wireless network using time capsule.  I stream video to the macbook, but often get start stop of the streaming, but no wheel to indicate a buffering issue.  Can I resolve this with higher speed internet and cable mod

I'm wondering if my cable internet is too slow for wireless streaming of videos to other macbooks.  Any help will be appreciated

Can you clarify whether you are asking about video that you are streaming from the Internet to your Mac through the Time Capsule?
Or, are you asking about streaming video that is already stored on the Time Capsule to your Mac?
In either case, what happens....video quality wise..... if you test by temporarily turning off the wirelss on the Mac and then connecting it to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule using a spare Ethernet cable for a few hours?

  • Anyone know how to use airport express to bring internet to a powermac G5 model power PC G5 using airport express?

I bought an airport express and was told that I can configure it, and then move it to the G5 and connect it with the ethernet cable giving the G5 access to the network. But the laptop I first configure it to loses the connection once I remove the ethernet cable between the airport express and the modem. When I connect the G5 to the airport express nothing happens. Any ideas?

  • Using Airport with HD for backup

I am starting up a small company that will have 3 employees to begin, growing to 9 in about 3 years. I am thinking about getting each employee a computer with a wireless connection and attaching a large HD to the airport as a backup. I could then have every computer backup each night automatically.
This seems pretty airtight, but I wonder if there are potential problems I am missing.
    Thanks.

    Hi Kenneth
To create bootable backups over a network your backup needs to be a disk image, I'm using SuperDuper. An advantage to disk images is the ability of having multiple backups on a single partition. The disadvantage is if you ever need it to boot from you'll have to mount it, and clone it's contents to another FW drive or partition. I would recommend doing your initial backup directly from the Mac.
The only problems I'm having is speed. the majority of my machines don't have "N" cards, even though all are connected through ethernet (thanks to Apple for failing to give us Gigabit) small updates take hours.
Having all new machines with "N" cards will enable you to set your ABSE to 5GHz, using the full potential of 802.11n. You will most likely have better results than I.

  • Can i use airport with other software than itunes?

I have my living room speakers connected to my Airport Express.
I can listen to my iTunes music playing it on my MacBook Air and I can use my iPhone to control it with Remote App.
But I can't use any other software to send sound to my speakers through Airport Express.
Is there a way to tell my computer to send all sound to Airport Express, e.g. listen to music from Youtube in my livingroom speakers?
    Thanks!

I believe Airfoil can do that...

  • Can I use airport with a USB 4G modem?

I use a 4g USB modem to connect to the Internet.  Can I add an airport device to broadcast wifi to other devices like my iPad?

    Sorry, but no.
The AirPorts need to have an Ethernet Internet connection.
The AirPort Expess USB port will only support a compatible printer.
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule will support a printer and/or a hard drive.

  • Using Airport with my laptop and a wired desktop

Long story short, I deleted my Airport Express settings on my laptop and set up a new wireless network. After doing so, I can no longer do any sharing with my wired desktop computer. I'm assuming they are no longer on the same network. I've had it working properly ever since the Airport was invented, but I don't have a clue what I did at the time to make sharing between my laptop and my desktop possible. If I recall, it just kind of happened "magically." Can anyone explain how it's done or point me to instructions for doing so?
    Thank you!

Ok, great thanks! Since you are connecting the AX directly to the Linksys via Ethernet, we just need to reconfigure it as a bridge to allow the Linksys to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for both the wired and wirelessly devices.
I'm assuming that you have the earlier 802.11g version of the AX and will be using the older AirPort Admin Utility for administration.
To set up the AX as a bridge, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to an available LAN port on the Linksys router, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility (located in the \Applications\Utilities folder), make these settings:
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    o Apply the new setting.

  • Cannot use Airport with my Windows partition

I have an Airport that I use with my iMac and never had problems.
But I cannot get Airport to work with my Windows partition installed with Bootcamp (Windows XP SP2).
My wireless network appears in the window among others, but when I choose it, I cannot connect. And the Airport utility also cannot detect my wireless network.
    How do I fix this?

Kindle works just fine on my AirPort Extreme.
You do not have an apostrophe or other type of thing like this in the name of your wireless network, do you?
Is the name of your wireless network a single word or phrase comprised of letters and/or numbers with no spaces?

  • Using Airport with a desk top hard drive

    Simple question!
I have just bought a desk top hard drive to back up and store to (Iomega Hi-speed USB 2.0)
Is is at all possible to connect this to my mac via the USB connection on my airport? It would be really cool if I could...

No, the USB of the Airport is ONLY for printer. However, your harddrive could simply be share on your network when it is plug on your computer...

  • Using airport with netgear CG3100

since installing a new Netgear cable modem / WiFi router my airport express connection to speakers has failed and I can't get airport utilities to "find" the airport express. Is this likely to be a result of something with the Netgear equipment? Do I need to configure something other than trying through Airport Utilities and reconficyuring the Airport Express (which I have tried without success at this time)

    Hackintosh,
terrific answer; for one of my 2 airport expresses. This was a great solution. So easy to configure from my phone for a task previously very difficult.
For my other express I'm getting an error message after the gathering data step which says "The Airport Express named "Apple Network 6fe5d5" cannot be set up by this"
By memory this airport express is slightly older than the other.
    Any other suggestions?
    Mike
