  • Notebook hangs if there's an app actively using external USB disk

...right before going into sleep mode.
I have this notebook and an external USB SATA drive hooked up to it. When I put the laptop into sleep mode, then resume its work, after a while I'll get a blank screen that essentially looks a lot like tty1, all black background and gray symbols all over the screen. Essentially, the message I get is the following:

By playing around I learned that if I kill transmission and any app that actively uses the USB disk prior to the sleep mode, and then start them after resume is finished and the disk is mounted (I use GNOME 3 in fallback mode, so it automounts the disk) everything works fine.
Now, I could ignore those messages but it gets worse. Mostly laptop will hang at a random point in time after printing that wall of text on tty1. It might take hours, or even days before this happens. Sometimes I'll find transmission in a freezed state and I may survive a couple of sleep and resume cycles but I almost never will go as far as 4 days and more in a row. The laptop will hang eventually. And the only way to avoid this is to kill off apps that use external USB drive prior to going into sleep mode.
Any ideas what's going on and how to fix this?

  • Problems Installing Win7 using External, USB DVD Drive

I have a mid 2010 15" i7 MBP which I upgraded to from 4GB to 8GB RAM courtesy of OWC.  I recently upgraded the 500GB 7200RPM HD with a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 and using an OWC Data Doubler, I replaced the DVD SuperDrive with the 500GB Hard Drive.
I used an External USB DVD Drive to install OS X SL On the SSD without issues. Also, I got all my updates and software installed and working without any problems.
I've been running great for about 2 weeks now, so I decided to install Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I ran Boot Camp Assistant and partitioned the 240GB SSD in half 120/120. Everything went fine with creating the partition. I selected to Install from the Win 7 DVD media in the USB DVD drive and rebooted.  I got a grey screen.  I turned the computer off and turned it back on.  Holding down Option, I selected the Install DVD from the Boot Menu.  I then got a screen with the Apple Logo flashing intermittently with a Circle/Cross Hatch.  So I can't get the Windows Install to start to save my life.  I know the External, USB DVD works since I used it to install OS X and I have no problems using it in OS X.  I Know the media works because I tried a test install, without activation in a VMWare Fusion VM.
    Any suggestions are appreciated?

So here is the answer.  The Firmware on the MacBook Pro only supports installation of OS X from External Media and will not install operating systems from 3rd Parties.  I tried to install Windows XP, Win7 Ultimate  32 & 64bit, and Ubuntu 11.04 but no success.
Supposedly, the MacBook Air does support installation of 3rd party operating systems from external media, but I have no way to confirm this.
I ended up reinstalling the internal DVD drive installing Win 7 and Ubuntu on the SSD.  Using rEFI, I'm able to triple boot all 3 operating systems.  Then removed the drive again and reinstalled the 2nd HD. Everything seems to be working fine.
I'm looking for someone who has experience in Mac EFI Hacking to see if there is a way to enable booting 3rd Party OSes from external media.  I'm guessing someone could examine the MBA firmware and figure out how to hack that capability into the MBP.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel panic when using external USB hard drive

I have a desktop PC with a 64 bit arch install, on a Core2 Duo 6320 CPU. I have been using (and continue using right now) a 500 GB "Iomega Desktop Hard Drive" external USB hard disk without problems. But I have just bought a 3 TB "Seagate Expansion" external USB hard drive and I'm unable to use it from my Arch install. Each time I try to format it or to copy data from the PC, Arch freezes with a kernel panic. Sometimes it freezes faster and I cannot see anything, but others I am able to see the following kernel messages, repeating several times:

Strange enough, the drive is listed by lsusb command as a 2TB but I don't think this is related to the problem (as the OS sees the 3 TB). This is the lsusb output:

I have tried the drive on other PCs and it works flawlessly. Also tried booting Windows 8 on the same PC I have Arch installed in, and in Windows it also works perfect. I have tried using ext2 and NTFS filesystems. Tried also changing the USB cable without success. And right now I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?

  • Two simultaneous sound outputs by using external USB sound card

    Hi
I have a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.4.1
I've also bought a Griffin iMic as my second sound card.
Mac OS X shows my internal sound card as well as the external USB one and I can
easily switch between them. I was wondering if there is a way of using both at the same time, say, the internal speakers play song X and the headphone connected to iMic play sound Y.
Do I need a special software for this ?
Is iTunes capable of doing this ?
    Any input is appreciated.
    thanks
    Ahoora

hi i just like to say i had a similar fault though i would be surprised if it causing yours, but you never know,my fault was my laptop lid, [9 months old] it contains the mic ,and when the lid was in a certain angle crackles could be heard worse when i had my external sound card in, it was a faulty membrane [ lid to body] easily missed by engineer because it was the same angle all the time it happened, good luck, PS you English is very good

  • Transfering iTunes files to new computer using external USB hard drive

    Thought this could be useful:
If you want to transfer your complete iTunes library to a new computer preserving all your playlists and library information, but without using your iPod as a hard dive, or without burning a CD or DVD, you can do it by using an USB external hard drive following these easy steps:
    1) Quit iTunes
    2) Connect your USB external hard drive to your computer and acccess it thru My PC or Windows Explorer.
    3) Create two new folders in your external hard drive (you can name them LIBRARY Backup and PLAYLISTS Backup).
    4) Open the LIBRARY Backup folder.
    5) Open another Windows Explorer or My PC window; open the iTunes Music folder (usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My documents\My music\iTunes).
    6) Copy all of its contents (only the contents, not the whole folder) to the LIBRARY Backup folder you created in your external USB Hard Drive.
    7) Close both the LIBRARY Backup folder from your USB external hard drive and the iTunes Music folder.
    8) Open the PLAYLISTS Backup folder from your USB external hard drive
    9) From your iTunes folder, copy the iTunes Music Library.xml to the PLAYLISTS Backup folder.
    10) Close all the windows and extract your USB external hard drive from your PC ()
    11) Install iTunes in your new computer.
    12) Using Windows Explorer open the iTunes Music folder (usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My documents\My music\iTunes).
    13) Connect the USB hard drive to your new computer and open it using another Windows Explorer window.
    14) Open the LIBRARY Backup folder and copy all of its contents (only the contents, not the whole folder) to the iTunes Music folder in your new computer. After the copying is complete, close this folder.
    15) Copy the PLAYLISTS Backup folder to you new computer’s desktop.
    16) Close Windows Explorer and extract USB hard drive.
    17) Open iTunes
    18) From the File menu, choose Import. Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.xml file on the Desktop and click Choose. The imported playlist will show only songs located on the computer's hard disk or external media.
    19) You can now delete the xml. file from your new computer’s desktop if you wish.

  • N86: charging using external usb battery

    Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone found a solution for charging the N86 using an external USB battery. I have two such batteries and my N86 refuses to charge from either of them. One of them works flawlessly with the iPhone so I know it's supplying at least 1000mA.
I was wondering if we need a special USB cable other than the one supplied by Nokia.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.

USB charging is a lower voltage charge but I think you should still unplug the player after it's been fully charged. While tranferring tracks or organizing the music it won't really make a difference. I know that a couple nights ago I charged a player over night (Meaning it was plugged in for like 5 hours with a full charge) and the battery's charge seemed to drain a little more quickly. I know this is highly anecdotal but just some thoughts.
I don't see the need to rate the music on the player (most of my music is ripped straight from CD so it's all pretty good) and for what most people use a Mass Storage Device for personal files or maybe a few movies and 2 gigs is more than enough.

  • 12GB too Small- using external USB/HDD for game storage?

    Hi,
Our old PS3 broke, we just bought a new one "Super slim". Our old PS3 had a Hard Drive with 60GB it was easy to instal 3 games and play them.
The new PS3 only has 12GB space. We installed 1 game and coulnd't even instal a second one because it didn't have enough space !
We tried to find answers on the internet on how to use a USB Stick as a storage device for the Game Data. However I couldn't find an answer.
We have it formatted on FAT32 however we can't seem to put Game Data on it.
If anyone knows how to use a USB Stick as storage device for Game Data please we need your help.
PS: I am not talking about Save Data (These files are 2MB) I am talking about the Game Data like 8GB each Game.

Are you sure an External Hard Drive wouldn't work ? I've seen some official Sony External Hard Drives for ps3. If an External Hard Drive does work on a PS3 could you explain how and also why a USB Stick doesn't work and an External Hard Drive would ? An external drive won't work because the transfer speed is simply too slow for game data to be usefully stored on it.
For example, using a USB drive I attempted to boot Windows XP. This took approximately 30 minutes, and then lagged unbelievably with even the most basic operations. When running a full blown game, this sort of speed of operation would be useless which is why it's not a feature. Hopefully that explains it a bit.I care to disagree, PS3 has USB 2.0 which has 60MB/s transfer speed, which is a bit more then most HDD can do. So in theory it would work but "Sony" has policy to do everything can don't want and don't do what they want. So the issues you had were propably due to something else.

  • Satellite A200: Cannot use external USB devices properly

I encountered a problem with my Toshiba notebook and i can't fix it and I am in need your help please..
The problem is that when i connect a USB portable device (external USB harddisk , iPod ,Flash memory ..etc) with more than 8GB of Memory..
It's not properly installed in device manager and appears under "universal serial bus controller ".
But it doesn't say that it's an unknown device. It appears normally with its name, but it's not properly installed (it doesn't say that either ) where it is supposed to be under a specific category (harddisk under "disk drives" , camera under "imaging devices " and so on )
And i can't use the device because the HDD doesn't appear in "My computer" and my iPod can't be used
I'd like to inform you that this problem is with all USB devices with more than 8GB of memory.
Not just one device. I tried many devices to make sure that it's not a problem with the device.
So it's a problem with my laptop and i installed Windows many times with no progress.
Thanks for your help in advance ..

    Is it XP or Vista?
If its XP, ensure you have at least Service Pack 2.
This hotfix may help XP see high capacity media:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934428
but that wouldn't really affect external USB HDD's.

  • Sudden restarts while using bootable USB installer (mid-2011 iMac) - evidence of hardware problem?

    Greetings:
For a couple of years I've been suffering from an issue reported in many threads:  seemingly random shutdowns and restarts of my mid-2011 iMac.  These can happen several times a day, or there can be a gap of weeks between occurences.  I've searched the web and discussions.apple.com endlessly, and tried every conceivable solution.  I've observed no consistent pre-restart pattern in Console.  I've tried removing all unnecessary extensions and start-up programs.  Fixed permissions, repaired HDD, many of the diagnostic procedures described by LINC (superuser on this forum).  I would sometimes get temporary relief from periodic restart loops, by unplugging the computer and resetting PRAM, but this would not last long. I couldn't discern whether it is a software/conflict issue, or a hardware issue.  Have run AHT in extended looping mode, several times, and found nothing wrong.  Which caused me to keep thinking it must be a software issue.  The last thing I've tried is a clean install of Yosemite, with full HDD erase, from bootable USB.
I did this successfully, restored files from Time Machine...but then a few hours later, a series of sudden restarts began, with 4 or 5 within a couple of hours. I decided to shutdown and restart using the bootable USB installer again, and run Disk Utility from it to check the HDD for errors.
But then, while booted up from the USB (and after running Disk Utility with a normal result):  the computer suddenly turned off and restarted!  And then it rebooted again into installer mode (i.e. running off the bootable USB), and I ran Disk Utility again and ...it happened again!
So what does this tell me?  I am asking all of you for confirmation please.  I am thinking this is a strong indication that whatever the issue is causing the restarts, it is hardware based, as the system was running off the bootable USB at the time, NOT using installed operating system or software.  AND this reminded me of one other instance where the system had rebooted randomly, while I was in SAFE mode.
Would you agree that this is likely now pointing to a hardware issue?  Is power supply the likely culprit?  Or??  (and recalling that repeated AHT have showed nothing...).  Is it worth trying to fix (out of warranty)?
    thanks for any insights,
    Warren

  • Labview misses a read when using Ni USB 8473 can interface

I was wondering if anybody here has had experience with this problem... I already talked to a Labview tech but i have not received an answer yet...
    This is my problem..
I have a program that  when a button is pressed, it initializes a can interface to CAN0 for example, then it writes... then it waits about 100mills and then it reads... My computer is connected to a simulator through the USB 8473 interface (I have the problem when I connect it to the hardware I am going to use), and everytime I write, this simulator sends a response... The problem is that sometimes I don't see a response... I have made sure that the simulator responds so I know it is responding... I have changed the waiting time before the read from 1 mills to 100 mills to 1 second, and still with the same result...
The way I have fixed this problem is by reading multiple times (3 times)... so every time I send a request, i wait 100 mills... then I read once, wait 25 mills, then read again, wait, then read again....
So, I wanted to know if anybody here has had to do this in order to get around this problem...???
The reason why I was asking this is because I also have another application that has to monitor my hardware by sending requests every 100 milliseconds... so I have two loops, once that writes requests every 100 mills... and another that reads the responses every 20 mills... but sometimes it looks like eventhough i read this many times, I still miss some frames, which are caught later but still not good enough...
I have posted a different thread about the above problem...
If you have questions just ask please...
    Thanks

Yes, by Labview tech i meant NI Support... sorry about that...
I am still waiting for them on this subject...
I'll attach a simplified version of my code (the only difference between this code and the original is that i parse all the data that i get...)
I am attaching these if a couple replys...
Run the receive and respond (simulator) then run the CAN_PROBLEM vi... click on the OK button to write then read... you can tell it missed the message when the Frames to Read field is 0...
how are you sure that you device is sending a response?
Very sure... 100%... the original simulator lets me know when it sends the response...
Can you run bus monitor on another port, ie another USB-CAN device?
I did that, and the other USB-CAN gets it... the program I am running on the other computer is called CANyliser... I think that program waits until there is something in the queue (which I am not doing with mine)... I am just reading after I have wrote teh message (reading after about 100 mills I wrote)... So I am assuming that's plenty of time... i have increased this waiting time to 1 sec and still get the same behaviour...

  • Windows migration tool using external USB drive

    Hi everyone,
My wife is using Windows Vista (BootCamp) on her MacBook now, but she finally decided to use Mac OS (it'll be Mavericks).
I believe that PC and Mac have to be connected via network (or Ethernet cable) to use Apple Windows migration tool, correct?
How can I migrate it in my case? Can I use MS (Windows) backup tool? Does Mac migration tool recognize this Windows backup? I prefer to use Apple migration tool, but any other good suggestions?
    Please advise.
    Thank you!

    You are welcome.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information (may be called something else in 10.5).
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
If your computer isn’t compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

You will need to get Snow Leopard.         Snow Leopard Purchase
Once you have Snow Leopard, boot off the Snow Leopard DVD, run Disk Utility Repair Disk and Repair Permissions, Then erase the entire hard drive (top one in Disk Utility) formatting it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Install Snow Leopard and update using Software Update to 10.6.8. The combo update will shorten the process.
    10.6.8 Combo Updater
Then go to the App Store and download Mavericks. I would quit the installer and make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

That should get you to Mavericks.

  • Data recovery from Hard Drive using external USB adaptor

    Hi all,
    Satellite L655D-S5066BN laptop.
My moderboard or processor failed the other day. (Computer power is on, but it would not boot at all, only the fan seems to run at full speed. Other than that, it is totally dead, not even the Toshiba BIOS logo, no hard drive activity at all).
I removed the hard drive and pluged it in an external adaptor and tried to read it from my desktop.
It seems to work fine, as I was able to access it and copy all the pictures and music files.
They were under c:\Pictures and respectively c:\Music directories.
However, when I try to access My Documents forlder I get an error telling me that I don't have credentials to access that directory.
The computer did not have any passoword protecting the User Account, and didn't use any encription software.
Only my daughter was the only user.
    Questions:
Is any way to access those folders that seem to be protected?
Would it be worth trying to replace the motherboard / processor ? If so where would I find such a motherboard?
    Thank you for your feedback.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Apparently, I found the solution.
Doing the below procedure I was able to access the files and copy all the content of My Documents.
To resolve this issue, you must turn off Simple File Sharing, and then take ownership of the folder:
    Turn off Simple File Sharing:
Click Start, and then click My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box, and then click OK.
Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message, if one appears.
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click your user name, Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group.
If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
    Click OK.
You may receive the following error message, where Folderis the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of:You do not have permission to read the contents of directory Folder. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
    Click Yes.
Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and the folder contents.

  • Can't use external USB Drive

    Hello
I have 500 GB Hitachi usb drive , it was working fine until now, i can see the disk in disk utility, but i can't format it. I tried to repair the partition but it failed, now the partition dissapear but i still can see the disk in disk utility list, when i try to format it, after few minutes i get this:
Disk Erase failed with the error:
    Couldn’t open device."
and previously i got this when formatting partition only:
Disk Erase failed with the error:
    Couldn’t open device."

For SMART checking, I understand that has been a problem with external drives.
Looks like there may be a combination solution here and here.
Any help from drive manufacturer site?
Have you reformated it before? Some drive mfrs write invisible partitions for Windows.
I had one drive once which I had to reformat as FAT32 and erase before I could reformat as Mac OS Extended.
