Using "Image/Transform/Perspective" on a layer?

Hi,
I'm new at this.  I have a shot of a big room with empty art frames on the walls.  I have rectangular layers that are shots of paintings that I want to drop into the frames, but of course the paintings layers have to be skewed to show the perspective angle (trapezoid) that matches the room.  Problem is, it seems that I can only use Image/transform/perspective on the painting files before they become layers.  This means guessing the perspective, then moving them into the background, which is trial&error at best.  It's very hard to guess the appropriate perspective when the file isn't a layer. It seems that once the painting files become layers, the "perspective" option is no longer available.  I can use "skew," or "free transform," but not "perspective."    "Skew" doesn't work, because while it will allow changing the rectangle into a paralellogram, it won't allow me to change the rectangle into a trapezoid. "Free Transform" doesn't work for the same reason.  So, How do you apply the "perspective" function to a layer?
If I knew how to change the rectangle by grabbing one of a selection's corner anchor boxes and fixing it place, that would help because I could create my own trapezoid, but I don't know how to do that.  Does anyone?
Thanks!

I've no idea why all the transform options aren't available; they are here.
Anyway, try this:
Drag or copy/paste the painting in. It will come in as a new layer.
Convert that layer to a smart object (Layer > Smart Object > Convert..). Reduce the smart object opacity to 50%.
Choose Transform > Distort and move the corners individually into place.
When you're happy, set opacity back to 100% and rasterize the smart object.
The beauty of the smart object in this case is that you can transform repeatedly without any additional quality loss; it will be rendered only once when you rasterize.

    hong,
You need to ClickDrag just a tiny bit, then apply the Shift Option Command.

  • Manual image transformation: Losing top of the image

With LR3 I often use the manual image transformations and observe an undesirable effect, which I cannot explain to myself: When changing the Vertical Perspective to a negative value, the image will be transformed to cope with the perspective as intended, but its top will be shifted out of sight as well. For example, when correcting the image of a tall building, the top of its tower shifts out of sight. An example:
After applying vertical correction -33 it looks like this:
The entire top of the tower is gone, on the bottom though we see the "out of image" area, and we cannot shift the image downward to see the top of the tower rather than the "gray" on the bottom. I found no way to avoid this, until I discovered that I can change the  scaling factor (while losing the resulting image resolution :-() and than this missing part of the image will be visible again.
Once we scale to 84% the above image, we can see the top of the tower again. Of course, we can crop out the gray areas manually:
However, the pixel size of the image is really reduced proportionally to the scale factor, here 0.84.
Why is that so? I am almost convinced, its a bug.
    Thomas

I would not be too worried about losing resolution etc.
If you do a lens correction like the one in the example of the "leaning tower", it is "major surgery" mo matter if you do it in LR or PS.
The top of the image gets enlarged while the bottom stays the same size.
You can think of this kind of lens correction as an image enlargement through a gradual filter that runs vertically.
As enlargements always do, it degrades image quality.
If you are concerned about retaining max image quality, in my opinion it's best to stay away from correction of lens distortion.
But I realize, sometimes we don't have that choice.

  • Feathered edges when using free transform

    Hello
When I apply a free transform to a raster layer or a smart object, the edges of the layer get slightly feathered (1px on each side). To demonstrate, here is a smart object that contains a rectangle shape. Here it is before applying free transform:
And here it is after being scaled down (bear in mind that the anchor point of the transform is set to top left):
Note how the edges are no longer crisp. Normally, I would have to go to the original image document and use the Image > Image Size panel to resize it to what I want and then repaste it to my document, but this is inconveinient and not particularly elegant. I want to be able to do this in my main document without hassle and particularly, I would like the edges of an image to remain clear if I'm free transforming a smart object.
I know that I can set the image interpolation setting to Nearest Neightbor in Preferences > General, but then the result is even worse as far as image quality is concerned.
Is there a way to get around this problem?
    Thank you

To further what Chris has said...  You want both high quality resampling AND pixel-alignment?  Those are competing goals.
One thing you could consider doing, if pixel-alignment is paramount is to use use a rectangular shape (i.e., via a vector mask) and the Snap To Pixels option:

  • Transforming a Smart Object Layer

Plain ordinary photograph.....  Start with a background layer.  Add a layer for doing non-destructive cloning.  Add a couple layers for adjusting curves and hue/saturation.
Then do a merge visible to create a new layer from all the underlying layers and still keep all the underlying layers.
Convert this layer to a smart object and apply Smart Sharpening.
    All the above works fine.........................
Now I want to do a transform - free, scaling, whatever.....  I can select the marged layer but all the transforms are grayed out.
How do I do a transform on a smart object layer?

Hi Noel.  Your questions are valid...  This isn't my normal post-processing.
NORMALLY, I have a couple layers for dodging and burning, probably something for other fiddling, my normal adjustment layers for curves and hue/saturation, then a "stamp visible".  Depending on whether or not I wind up converting to b&w I may have a couple other layers for that....  Then I save the psd, and afterward crop and sharpen as needed.  Generally,
my sharpening is to use the Smart Sharpen on my merged layer, OR to duplicate thelayer and do a high-pass sharpening.
Recently, I've seen two presentations by well-regarded Photoshop experts extolling the virtues of doing as much as possible in non-destructive ways.  For sharpening, as I understand it, this means either opening the original image as a smart object, or converting to a smart object prior to sharpening.  SO, I've been trying this on some images, just to see if there are some real advantages, or if it's just a big pain-in-the-neck way to do something that's pretty standard....  Frankly, I"m still not sure.
In THIS particular case, I had an image that had been edited, and the sharpening applied through the smart filter PRIOR to cropping.  My wife requested a non-standard resizing, not a crop, that meant using a transform to change the aspect ratio of the image.  That's when I found that the transforms wouldn't work on my smart object..
Unfortunately, as it turns out, I was right - it was an error on my part.  I SELECTED part of the image on the layer with the marque tool...  Had i NOT done the selection, the transform would have worked fine.....
So, the bottom line is yes, I agree that it's easy to get caught up in trying to make everything non-destructive and flexible, but sometimes it's more trouble than it's worth.

  • Problems using Free Transform within a Photoshop action

I have a few hundred images each containing text on a separate layer.  The text is in different positions on each image.  I'm trying to write an action to move the text in each image to a specific location on each one.  When creating the action I use free transform to move the current layer to x=750 y=800.  I type in the desired coordinates and make sure not to click the delta between the x and y settings so that it doesn't use relative positioning.  When I click the return button the text moves to the desired spot so all seems okay.  When I run the action the text moves a fixed amount relative to its initial position which is not what I want.  Each text layer is supposed to move to x750, y 800.  I'm having this problem with both Photoshop CS6 and CC2014 running on  a Mac using OS 10.9.4.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I think you misunderstood me. You can use the mesh on images of the same size but different resolutions, but you don't have to if you don't want to. Simply do your distortions, save the mesh, then load it for any image of the same size and all your distortions will be applied. Note that if you go into and out of liquify, the mesh will not remember the distortions you made in previous liquify adjustments. Any mesh you save will only remember the distortions you applied within that current instance of the filter.
I don't know how liquify may interact with an action, so you'll have to test that yourself.

  • Using images with Transparency in Photobooks

I'm to a point where I would like to use images that utilize transparency in Aperture photo books. Is this possible? So far, PSD files that I've cropped with PS's lasso tools to have transparent areas surrounding their subject tend to change this area to white when dropped into a book.
Does anyone know of a way or format to use to retain this transparency? I love the speed of Aperture's photobook tools, along with export and printing options, and would like to be able to layer images that bleed together, or have a cut-out subject on top of others, but I haven't noticed a way as of yet.
Is this ability even available in Aperture yet?
If not, is there a third party plugin that gives it to the user when making photo books?
Please let me know soon, else i'm going to have to adjust my workflow back to photoshop only for page set layouts and the created PSD files on blank book pages- not fun.

i have been trying different ways to make it work fine, and find several things to consider:
Note: for the next ways i tried with images with transparency.
1 searching images in the iPad with safari and saving it into Photo app
then copying it with the popup and pasting it with the popup inside Pages or Keynote:
    work fine.
2 using the saved images that worked fine in the first way but
then inside Pages in my opened document, using the menu to import the image from the
Photo app, to insert the same downloaded image used in the first case:
does not work, the image appears with a white background.
3 trying the first way (manually copying and pasting) but with the images i imported from
my MacBook Pro using the normal way via iTunes(10.1.1 (4))
does not work, some images appears with a black background, other images
    appears with a white background.
4 trying with the images of the third way, but changing the method using the photo app
    menu from Pages
does not work as in the third way
i dont have problem using transparency images in the first complex way.
my problem is when i try to use images with transparency in the other three normal ways.

  • Transparent border appears when I use Image Size to shrink an image (bug)

In CS2 (9.0.2) and CS3 (10.0.1), whenever I shrink an image using Image Size, my layers get a slightly transparent edge. As a game developer, I make tiling textures a lot, and this generally ruins their tiling-ness.
    Try this:
    - create a 32x32 image, make it white
    - add a layer, fill it with black
    - shrink it to 16x16 or 20x20, using any of the Bicubic resampling methods
    - notice that the edge pixels of the black layer are slightly transparent. This is most noticeable in the corners of the image.
Is there a better place for me to report this bug? I haven't found one.

Haha, you mean it's a bug in the spec rather than a bug in the implementation? (Unless there is actually a reason someone would want it to work that way.)
Yeah Bilinear and Nearest Neighbor both avoid the problem, but of course the image doesn't look as good.
I work around it by duplicating all my layers before shrinking. The problem is obvious (in-game) with only one layer, but still subtle enough that it's usually invisible after duplicating. Annoying, but it works.

  • About using categories and perspectives for new user

We are just beginning a conversion and upgrade project to convert our Web site to Oracle Portal. I'm trying to get a good handle on some different things we need to resolve as part of the project. One of the first decisions is using Categories and Perspectives.
I'd like to ask users about how they have used categories and perspectives and some real-world examples of how these work and improve the site and user experience.
    About us
We're a big nonprofit river authority and wholesale electric provider in Austin, Texas. Currently, we offer very limited online transaction capabilities. However, we are diverse organization and users come to us looking for every specific information, so these elements may be very helpful. I'm evaluating how we can use these and other elements to make recommendations. Some real-world examples and best practices would help a lot.

    Continuing the thread...
Perspectives and categories may be leveraged in custom search portlets, so that you can enter the content one time, in one place, and have selected content display in multiple places.
Re: our "news" concept: our central communications group posts news stories tagged with one or more perspectives, such as which school is related to the story. This allows us to keep all of our news stories in one page group, but reuse the content elsewhere. For example, for the School of Nursing intranet, we can use a custom search portlet that automatically displays only that school's stories.
You'll want to do some up-front planning regarding your classification scheme. One significant limitation of both categories and perspectives is the inability to change the hierarchy. Oracle Portal product team, if you're reading this, this is a serious pain! I might also recommend leaving your classification scheme relatively flat. Tagging content with perspectives becomes more difficult if the content contributor has to visually traverse a deep hierarchy of perspectives.
Categories work similarly, but we mainly use them to visually sort items on a page using the "Group By" feature of a region.
Hope this gets some gears turning.

I could convert in case of the RasterArt. (The reference point of the transformation matrix of RasterArt is (0,0).)
In the PlacedArt, preference point is not (0,0)?
The tx/ty of the transformation matrix of PlacedArt is not correct?
In the transformation matrix of RasterArt and Placed Art, how are those two different?

The short answer is "no", (0, 0) is not the origin of placed art (unlike kRasterArt). Off the top of my head, I believe when you place art, its original state is upside-down and flipped horizontally in the upper-right of the artboard. If you want to see where it starts, simply create an identity matrix and apply that as the matrix for the kPlacedArt and you'll see how it starts. Yes, its pretty crazy.
