Using incoming messages as a to-do list

Hello,
re:  mail.app v6.5 on 10.8.4
I use  the "•" column of a mail.app Viewer Window a lot.  I sort incoming messages by date, latest at the top, so I can quickly scan the left column:  An absence of blue "new message" circle-markers tells me I've at least read all incoming messages.  Hooray!
In addition, I have rules to sort  incoming messages from some correspondents into individual mailboxes.  I also view these by date, latest at the top. I treat these mailboxes as to-do lists, as typically each message contains at least one task to complete.   When I complete the task(s), I respond to the message. Thus, a column of grey left-pointing "replied" icons in the "•" column tells me I'm up to date with respect to this correspondent.  Hooray!
This system works very well, but has a gap: cases in which an incoming message doesn't contain anything to do, and doesn't need a response.
Is there any way to mark these messages "dealt with" without actually replying?    I can imagine:  a command that would place a grey, unfilled circle marker (for example) in the  "•" column for that message.  That would mark the message as needing no further attention. (Except to be saved for possible later reference.) A cruder method:  delete any such message -- but that fails because an incoming message might contain some useful information without requiring a response or completing a task.   Other alternatives?  Maybe: Defining a "done" sub-mailbox for each of these correspondents.  Moving a message to the "done" sub-mailbox would signify "completed" _or _"no further attention required."  Haven't tried that -- seems at this moment a bit over-complicated, but might work.
I hope I'm missing something incredibly obvious and there's a trivial way to accomplish this within my framework.
Suggestions?
TIA

I always love to see the mis-application of technology to do something the designer didn't intend!
This must be a fancy way of saying 'thinking outside of the box.' That and attention to details are the things I'm good at (better, now that I have a working to-do list again)!
I'm sure Notes will be great once Apple gives us more than just the basic version. Until then...

  • Some emails don't appear in the folder list, I can only find them by using Search Messages

    As of yesterday, new emails from one regular correspondent do not appear in the list of messages when I click on Inbox. The only way I can access them is to use "Edit/Find/Search Messages". They are still in Inbox, they haven't been moved to another folder.
    Thunderbird version is 31.6.0.

    None of these apply, the messages have been received, I can find them using Search Messages but they do not appear in the folder contents.

  • Using BPM (Blocks) when Incoming message has multilple rows

    Hi All,
    I am using BPM in my scenario.I have a message with multiple rows coming.I want to check for a condition for each row of the incoming message.I am trying to use a block(Mode: For Each) and using a switch step inside this block.But in a block if u want to check for each line, we need to define a multiline container element as Source Interface message.Since I am already having multilple rows, I cannot give multiline option.Can someone give me some example scenarios where this type of scenarios are handled.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Soumya

    Hi,
    Here I am picking a file with multiple rows
    The Sender Message Type structure is
    <ns:File_MT xmlns:ns="http://File/send">
      <recordset>
        <Slno />
        <Goods_Receipt_Date />
        <Material_Code />
        <Quantity />
        <Plant_Code />
        <Storage_loc />
        <Batch_Number />
        <PO_Number />
        <Item_Number />
        <Special_Stock_Indicator />
      </recordset>
    </ns:File_MT>
    Here the row recordset has multiple occurences.
    For my BPM I have defined an Abstract Message Interface of similar structure.
    1)I am using a receive step to receive the message.
    2)I am using a transformation step for structure change.
    3)Then I have to check a condition whether each of the fields, ie material number,plant code etc are null or not.
    I am using a switch for that.In the switch I have 2 branches-for error records and correct records.
    Now in the eror record branch, I want to append error records to a container using a container operation and finally send it to another system.
    Since my Source message is already having multilple rows.ie 0...unbounded for recorset, I can't define a multiline for container operation.The container operation expects a multiline container element when using append statement.
    How should I go about this?Should I define a Loop after the transformation step?
    Can you give me any example scenarios where transformation steps are used to change a source message with mutilple rows are used?I referred the FlightBooking Example, http://sap.com/xi/XI/Demo/Agency-SplitMultiplebookingOrder but in that they are not using the MessageTypes which are already defined, in the mapping.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Soumya.

  • Siri not recognizing new incoming messages on 4s using iOS 8.1

    Help!
    I upgraded my 4s to iOS 8.1.1. Now when I'm using my bluetooth device, Siri does not recognize any text messages or iMessages that I get. I ask it to read me the last incoming message, which worked nicely before the upgrade, and it tells me that I have no new messages. I've tried all kinds of resets and accessibility modifications, but nothing has worked so far. Ideas?

    Hey Rileybear1,
    Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, Siri has a problem recognizing messages when you are using a bluetooth device. Does this happen without the bluetooth device? I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

  • Apple Mail 250 MILLION incoming messages (Mavericks)

    A few weeks ago I upgraded to Mavericks.
    Mail was working great but now I'm having all kinds of problems.
    I've seen there are lots of other people having similar problems, but one I have not seen anyone post is...
    In the "mail activity" window, below the list of mailboxes, I have a HUGE number of incoming messages.
    Today it is up to over 250 MILLION incoming messages!!!!!  Not hundred, not thousand but MILLION     And the number is still increasing!!
    In my different emails I may get a maximum (depending on the day) of up to 150 emails, all of which are already loaded on my computer (I end up deleting the majority of those emails), so how can I have so many emails trying to come in??
    Of course, when I open my Activity Monitor, the Mail application sometimes takes up OVER 100% of the processor... making it impossible to work.
    I went into my different accounts and deleted the "deleted" emails on the servers.  What else can I do?
    What can possibly be causing this??
    I have several gmail accounts and others on specific domains (linked to websites), all imap.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
    macbook pro 15-inch, Early 2011,
    mavericks 10.9.5
    8 go ram
    Mail 7.3

    Yes Eric that does reset it but the numbers quickly start to climb again!!!
    At first it says may 10 incoming  messages (that would be about normal),   but now I'm up to over 50,000 again!!!
    There is some sort of duplication going on that was not happening before I upgraded to Mavericks.
    I agree with you about feedback.  I'm trying to send feedback everyday, until I find a solution.
    This problem is keeping me from working since it is using up way too much of the CPU.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Do you have an option for block all incoming message and request EXCEPTED messages from my contacts?

    Please help!!To whom it may concernDear Madam/Sir who works for Skype & Microsoft  Dear all who can really help,  Do you have an option for block all incoming message and request EXCEPTED messages from my contacts? or Do you have any solution to solve my problem from begin to now in present time?  Even though, I set the Privacy settings: - Allow calls from... "people in my Contact list only"- Automatically received video and share screens with "people in my Contact list only"- Allow IMs from "people in my Contact list only"  I still received unknow users sent me messages in every day, contact requests etc. And they're all clearly spammings and identity thefts.  I only wanna contact with my family and my freinds here with Skype via my Windows device and my mobile phone (w/Android OS).  And this is the only way to contact with them, because they could use Skype only in overseas.  BUT I don't need new friend from other unknow Skype member.   I keep blocked all unknow spammers in every day.  However in this morning, I feel so scared with Skype on my mobile, I looked at my mobile Skype, I saw it automatically showed me the list of all blocked members. BUT they were all unblocked (contact unblocked) by my mobile (Android version) Skype itself automatically, and listed them one by one on the screen, and about 30 seconds later, they all were disappeared suddenly.  I don't know what do to now, is it indicating my account was hacked?And how could I found out all those members again and block them again and delete all of them for ever?  I appreciate if you would improve the privacy protection. Thank you very very very much.

    Hrm... that may be true and this may be a function of the phone email client that Apple just doesn't do.
    No, I can easily MANUALLY delete the messages. I would prefer if I didn't have to do it twice, tho. Once on the mail server and once on the phone.
    What I think the phone needs to do is, when it checks the POP, anything NOT there should be removed locally. I think you are correct on POP; the phone will poll the mx (mail exchanger) and the mx will pass off the messages to the phone. The phone then keeps ALL of that unitl you manually delete it.
    If, say, I remove a message from the mx, I would like the phone, when next polls, to see that that particular message isn't on the server anymore and remove it locally.
    Perhaps it's just me but if I delete the message on the mx itself, via my ISP's webmail interface, I really don't want to have to remove it again from my phone.
    thxs!
    cheers

  • Mail: "Message contains NUL characters," not listed in ANY folder

    On occasion, I will hear a new message sound in Mail, and I will see the little progress indicator showing an incoming message, but there is no trace of it in the inbox. If I am there to see the incoming notice and remember the message content, I can search for the message content in Spotlight and it will open the message. But if I then click "Show in Mailbox," it opens a Mail list window that is empty and labeled "No mailbox." If I try to move the message by dragging its title bar icon, nothing happens. If I try to use the Move command, I get "Append failed: Message contains NUL characters." If I command-click the message title bar, it tells me it's inside the inbox, but again it won't list it in the inbox. The physical message file itself resides in the Inbox folder in the Mail folder on the desktop. Rebuilding the mailbox does not make it appear in the list.
    I've found various workarounds for shaking Mail into realizing the message exists and listing it, but my real question is this: The above is when I notice that a message has come in but is not listed. But what about messages that come in and are not listed, and I do not know they are there because I wasn't around when they came in?
    How can I use a mail rule or other tool to locate messages that are not listed in any mailbox, or contain NUL characters?
    I would really like to know if I've missed any important messages because they never appeared in the list, even though they exist somewhere.
    Mail will not allow me to set up a mail rule on folders when no folder is specified.

    One thing I can suggest you try is to move the Envelope Index files from your User Library>Mail Folder>MailData.
    Quit Mail first, navigate to those files and move them to the desktop. Restart Mail. It should give a message that you need to Import your mail. Click continue. That should reindex all your mail messages.
    This should help with wrong message counts, ghost messages, and hidden message problems.
    Once Mail is running and OK, you can trash those files.

  • Recently Firefox posted a note when I opened Facebook. "Something" regarding profile pictures on incoming messages. I clicked on it and now cannot get the pictures back. How can Firefox reverse this?

    Cannot restore profile pictures on incoming messages in Facebook. At a recent point Firefox flashed a note saying they were "deleting or removing" something from my FB and I thought it was for one thing only. But now ALL profile pictures on incoming messages in FB are not there. Facebook does not help at all.

    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Images_or_animations_do_not_load
    You can use these steps to check if images are blocked:
    * Open the web page that has the images missing in a browser tab.
    * Click the website favicon ([[Site Identity Button]]) on the left end of the location bar.
    * Click the "More Information" button to open the "Page Info" window with the Security tab selected (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
    * Go to the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
    * Select the first image link and scroll down through the list with the Down arrow key.
    * If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

  • Apple Mail Infinite Incoming Messages

    I have 9 email accounts setup in Apple Mail. They all worked on various Macs and iOS devices until the recent upgrades to iOS7 and Mavericks. On my Macs, all with Mavericks via a completely clean install, I am having the following issues:
    * Mail using excessive (> 100% CPU on multi core machines) CPU as long as it is open
    * "Mail Activity" shows an ever growning number of "Incoming Messages"
    * Settings are not being remembered.
    I have tried the following:
    * Delete ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    * Delete ~/Library/Mail
    * Remove ALL accounts from Mail and "Internet Accounts"
    * Rebooting
    * Relaunching Mail
    * Disabling accounts
    * Pretty much every combination of the above
    Nothing seems to work. The disappearing settings may be the result of trying many different combinations of the above methods and forgetting when I deleted them specifically but I am sure that they have disappeared at least once without that having been the case.

    CT - The problem is certainly not the standard behaviour so it is unsurprising that everyone cannot reproduce it. I did a new clean install after an upgrade some time ago and everything magically worked. I tried to list all the possibly relevant criteria in my original post but it is clearly not the whole story as I am no longer experiencing the problem
    RedRacer123 - It is not a virus. It is just talk back and forth between your server and client (Mail). Especially with Gmail accounts there are a bunch of messages that are synced and archived behind the scenes which do not get displayed as new and unread (e.g. spam, chats). Regardless the problem I experienced and the problem that Megan62 is experiencing is different than just being unrelated: the count just rises and one can see that Mail is using a bunch of CPU doing something but it doesn't ever seem to finish whatever that is. I get a lot of mail but I do not have 250 MILLION messages when I see a counter go that high it is a bug in some while loop.
    Megan62 - Sorry I don't have any advice other than try removing all your accounts email accounts from the computer and adding them back one by one. Hopefully whatever happened to cause the error will not happen again. I also think it might help to move as many emails out of your inbox as possible but I am not certain on that.

  • Incoming messages issues with Mail application

    I'm using an email account attached to my internet company and set up with the "Mail Application" on my Mac. For the past week, When I turn "Mail" on, the Mail Activity window would show me the incoming message in progress, ex: 1 out of 26. The process would move forward showing also the speed of the reception (KB/s) and for no reason it would stop in the middle and stop receiving any email. It would basically freeze and I have to quit Mail by "force quit". If I re-open it again, it would be doing the exact same thing and receiving again the first couple emails, always the same one that I already received and freeze in the middle. I basically can't use Mail at all lately. Any idea to fix this problem?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
    cool, I'm not alone...
    I can't remember exactly, when the problem started. I guess it was around the 10.5.2 or 10.5.3 update. Before (also in Leopard) Mail worked fine.
    Now I have to do the following procedure to receive an email (note: I have to repeat this for each email):
    1. Check, if mail is receiving an email (because it never completes receiving on it's own, I'm never notified of the new email).
    2. If Mail is receiving an email (check the Activity window), I have to force quit mail
    3. Launch Mail again, immediately hurrying to the Mailbox menu and setting all accounts to offline.
    By now, the email has already been received from the server but not internally marked as such, so staying online would result in fetching the same email again – hanging 'afterwards' included.
    4. Select the Inbox and open the Get Account Info window by right clicking on the Inbox or pressing cmd + i.
    5. Select the corresponding account from the list (I got three POP3 accounts), e.g. the one for which the last email has been received.
    6. Manually remove this email (and only this one) from the server.
    7. Close the Get Account Info window and take all accounts online again.
    8. Check for new mail...
    +If I would for example get 4 new emails, I would have to repeat this procedure 4 times.+
    Yes, I'm not happy about it.
    *I already did the following (using hints from other threads):*
    Remove Mail.app, and /Library/Mail/
    Installing Mail.app and the /Library/Mail/ folder again from the 10.5.0 DVD using Pacifist.
    Updating the former installation with the 10.5.6 Combo update
    Installing the Mail Update 10.5.6 afterwards
    Removing the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    Restart
    Launch Mail, setting up all accounts from scratch
    Create a new user
    Open Mail, setting up a new account
    Reset Power Management
    *So far, nothing did solve the problem.*
    Next would be Archive and Install Mac OS X but I currently don't have the time for that procedure.
    I have two Mac Pros (one at work, one at home) who both have this issue.
    I believe, it's a bug though and will send this text to Apple via "Provide Mail Feedback" in Mail's Mail menu.

  • IChat - Parse incoming messages and respond accordingly!

    Hey guys! I made a related post over in the iChat Server section but as that got no replies I am now attempting to write my own AppleScript bot. Very basic. Just gets commands and replies/run Automator actions/UNIX commands through Apple Remote Desktop.
    My initial test didn't really work. The only item that seemed to be understand was the 'help' command! That just prints back a list of commands. I keep getting the horrid -1708 error. theMessage was not defined. I thought that theMessage was the variable that handled incoming messages?!
    If anyone can shed some light on this that would be great!
    Thanks in anticipation!
    John
    Code:
    using terms from application "iChat"
    on message received theMessage from theBuddy for theChat
    set theResponse to "Welcome to Support Bot!
    What seems to be the matter?
    Type Help to get a menu of available commands."
    if theMessage contains "get uptime" or "Get Uptime" then set theResponse to do shell script "uptime"
    if theMessage contains "get ip" or "Get IP" then set theResponse to do shell script "ifconfig | grep 'broadcast' | awk '{print $2}'"
    if theMessage contains "help" or "Help" then set theResponse to "Available commands are:
    1. Get Uptime"
    if theMessage contains "bye" or "Bye" then set theResponse to "Bye for now!"
    send theResponse to theChat
    end message received
    end using terms from

    I don't know if it's your specific problem, but your if statements are not valid.
    An if statement looks something like:
    if <condition> \[or <condition>\] then
    That is, the or creates another condition to check.
    If you compare that to your script
    if theMessage contains "get uptime" or "Get Uptime" then set theResponse to do shell script "uptime"
    This gets interpreted as:
    if (theMessage contains "get uptime") or ("Get Uptime") then...
    In other words "Get Uptime" is disconnected from '... theMessage contains.."
    To write this correctly you'd need to:
    if (theMessage contains "get uptime") or (theMessage contains "Get Uptime") then...
    Now, while this may seem long-winded at first, it means you're completely flexible to make whatever comparisons you like:
    if theMessage contains "get uptime" or theDate is "Tuesday" or numMessagesProcessedToday > 200 then...

  • ICloud Push - just for incoming messages !?

    In this support document, apple describes - that just incomming messages will trigger a push sync between your devices.
    This means, if you get an email and read it on your iPhone, it will be listed as unread on your iPad and Mac as long as you open the email on each device! - So this is my problem.
    I think such unconfortable handling of emails in icloud isn't in time!?
    So is this "bug" actual?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4083?viewlocale=us

    I called Apple Support about this over the weekend. This "feature" or "bug" or whatever you want to describe it as has irked me for the last 15+ months or so I've been using iCloud mail after migrating away from Gmail & Google completely.
    After talking with Apple Support, they indicated this is not a bug, but rather expected behavior.  I mentioned how this is a poor experience and not analogous with how a similar push service like iMessage works.  We expect that if we read something on one device, the other device is updated without us having to open that application.  Apparently that is not how Mail for iCloud works and it is by design.
    They did try to explain to me how Continuity between OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 would help address this issue, but, I've been running OS X Yosemite Developer Previews and this does not appear to be true.  If I read the e-mail on my Mac, my iPhone 6 on iOS 8.0.2 doesn't process the changes until the Mail app is opened.

  • Quoting/threading phenomena in mail.app -- due to problems in incoming messages?

    Folks:
    Mail 5.1 on MacOS 10.7.x
    I began using Mail.app when I installed 10.7, shortly after the initial release.
    No problems with respect to unformatted email or replying to short, trivial length formatted message.  For complex, on-going discussions  I feel that consistent and reliable quoting and threading behavior are essential.   But that is not happening in some cases. I'd like to figure out why, and what I might do to fix the issue.
    (Note:  I do not want to get into a discussion here of formatted versus unformatted email.  Both have their pros and cons. Nor do I want to spend a lot of time debating this issue with my correspondents.  As a matter of courtesy, I set Mail.app to respond using the same message format as the original message.)
    When I reply to a formatted email,  I notice that mail.app sometimes draws a dark grey box --with rounded corners-- around one or more incoming paragraphs, placing a circled "X"  "close icon" at the upper left.   I don't get it.  To what does this correspond?  Why does mail.app mark-off this text and offer a "close icon"?   As far as I know I'm not doing anything that implies I might want to delete the text.
    (Note:  Rummaging around in the corresponding message source, it seems that these boxes correspond to blockquoted text in the received message.)
    Editing within one of these boxes is really unpredictable.  Sometimes I can select an insertion point and insert a line-break, in preparation of replying to the text just above.  Sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes I can select text, and cut it. Sometimes nothing happens at all to the selected text.
    Mail.app commonly doesn't  correctly increase the quoting level in such paragraphs.  Using
        Format> Quote Level>Increase
    to maintain threading history manually is fairly easy since I've defined a function-key shortcut, which works some of the time -- but  the effect of this command is unpredictable.  Sometimes this command deletes the selected text entirely.  (Grrrrrr!)  The workaround I've found is to select smaller chunks of text.  In such cases, this command generally works correctly.
    Meanwhile, messages from exactly one person --who uses gmail exclusively-- are displayed in a completely unique threaded format by mail.app.  The entire short history of 5 messages from him are displayed on multiple virtual sheets in one message window, with the latest first.    In one view, clicking on the "see more" link at the bottom of his messages unleashes a cool-looking accordion opening effect and displays my part of the thread. (I guess.  I don't totally understand this display concept.  But it looks very cool and seems to handle quoting and threading pretty well.)
    What's going on?
    My best guess is that mail.app is struggling with "inconsistencies" in the incoming messages from different people using various email clients.  I seem to recall reading that email tech specs  are a hodgepodge of evolving and contradictory  standards. Is that correct?   Is that the root of my issue?
    Many of my correspondents are non-tekkies and/or non-affluent, and they use whatever email client they can afford.  Some could be using really old email clients.  That doesn't help, right?  Are blockquotes a really archaic formatting measure?
    When these problems occur, they can cost me a lot of time and trouble.  It's really distracting to have to deal with portions of the incoming message disappear.
    I don't think it is practical to persuade my correspondents to upgrade their email clients.  Some of them have trouble simply setting the preferences to support quoting.   Threading is a difficult concept for a few.
    Any suggestions?   Any mail.app preference settings I might try adjusting?  Any add-ins?   Is it possible to tell Mail.app "interpret all incoming blockquotes tags as simple breaks" or strip them entirely?  Or ...?
    TIA

    haavee:
    Thanks for your reply on this thread.
    And thanks for the confirmation:  Yes, often difficult, and completely unworkable in some cases.
    To my surprise, I've been able to find very few people reporting similiar observations.  Very little about this issue at all on the web.
    I looked for command-key variations on Format --> Make Plain Text, hoping for a block action, but none I tried was any different.
    Here is my current view of the issue:
    • For formatted messages, each email client operates differently.  If there is a standard it seems to be no more robust than "use simple HTML for formatted messages".
    • The "can't insert" issue, as well as those mysterious rectangle-surrounded blocks, seems very correlated with the presence of html <div> sections in the message.  It is awkward to experiment, so I've only done a limited amount.  My observations so far:
    -- I don't think you can insert text anywhere "inside" a <div>, and mail.app seems to treat <div> as a "sticky" attribute -- e.g/ very difficult/impossible to remove without deleting the text inside.  The copy-style method doesn't seem to affect <div> tags.
    -- Based on one case, it appears that message bodies composed of back-to-back <div> sections are impervious to inserts anywhere. (The email client used by one particular person with whom I've corresponded seems to build messages out of --you guessed it-- back-to-back <div> sections. Putting on my HTML coders hat -- I cannot see any sense at all in doing this. Smells to me like a kludge/hack, as you prefer.)
    • What about an applicable mail.app add-in?  I can find mail.app add-ins, but it seems the  mail.app tech info (API) isn't public, so those that exist are based on guesswork about how it works. This means that add-ins must be re-tooled possibly for each new version of mail.app. Altogether, not encouraging for add-in developers. And, yes, consistent with that the range of functionality I've seen is rather limited.  So, I've given up looking in the add-in category.
    • Applescript has commands for controlling mail.app generally, but I didn't see anything approaching the level of function necessary to remove <divs> by global search-and-replace. (I'm far from an Applescript expert, so it is very possible I missed something.) Nor did I see any general command such as Clean up dodgy HTML in message.  (I can dream!)
    The only bit of progress I've had is finding TextSoap: http://www.unmarked.com/textsoap/ which may have promise. But I have had no time to evaluate it and it may be a month or so before I get a chance to check it out.
    Looking at the upper right of the window in which I'm composing this message, there's a button "HTML" that lets me see --and edit-- the underlying HTML. On first glance, there's not enough functionality to, say, efficiently clean up all insert-resistant blocks in a message, but it looks practical to clean up individual blocks, and maybe that's all it would take.    Though I imagine that the user base for these forums is not very different from that of mail.app, I'm guessing adding this function to mail.app isn't even a dim possibity.  Oh, well...
    I note you are happy with your solution, so I'll try see if a variation of it might help me.
    Thanks,
