Using iweb as a store

first i guess, is it possible to have a website made from iweb be an online store? and if so what are the possibilities? how would i go about incorporating a paypal account into the website? and if i can get this far how many options do i have for organizing products? for instance can i have multiple categories of products? also will iweb give me the option to be able to have the costumers be able to choose options i have available to customize their product they buy? i know reading this may sound confusing but if you have any questions i will be happy to answer them.

  • Multiple questions about using iWeb '09 with my Host Excellence, GoDaddy & Storenvy Accounts. Can you Help?

Hello, my name is Luis Diaz and I have always appreciated the help here in the iWeb community.  I've been using iWeb for a long time. For some reason my usernames are not working lately - LuisDiazArt or RabidArt)
I updated my domain service with Host Excellence before MobileMe expired and thank you guys for the help with that. So far it's been a flawless service and because of that I'm very happy. I also have all my domains in GoDaddy. They have been very helpful
Okay I'm going to try to explain my current problem. I'm trying to create a subdomain in GoDaddy for my website: LuisDiazArt.com
I went and added a Subdomain in the Control Panel as: store.LuisDiazArt.com The subdomain suppose to mask my store: luisdiaz.storenvy.com
I thought by adding this subdomain it would make all the addresses look similar (and more clean) just in case someone gets lost along the way.
So what's happening after I waited an hour is I'm getting: http://store.luisdiazart.com/LuisDiazArt.com/Art_of_Luis_Diaz_%7C_LuisDiazArt.co m.html
I'm getting the huge and familair long addresses and it is not pointing to my store, but to the homepage.
Did I do something wrong or do I not understand something fully about subdomains? I thought you can make a subdomain point to another site. Perhaps it can't be done the way I'm thinking about this.
So to fix this issue I am thinking about making a duplicate website with a different domain name (RabidArt) and mask it with LuisDiazArt (this is site name I use on business card and everything else).  After that make a subdomain with the same: http://store.luisdiazart.com
Perhaps this may fix the problem.
So to do this I may need to add another site onto my account (Basic and not Business) on HostExcellence.
    So my other questions are:
Can I have multiple domains or websites using iWeb on a Basic Host Excellence Account? I checked out a few websites, but couldn't really find out if I can have multiple domains/websites using iWeb on Host Excellence with my current account.
I do know how to make a new duplicate site, but do you publish it the same way as you would with the regular site or do I have to so something different?
Hopefully the problem can be fixed not having to do a new site and maybe it was something I did wrong when I added a subdomain.

To add more domains you need to upgrade your account.
To have a sub domain for your store you need to create a separate site in iWeb and upload these files to the store.luisdiazart.com folder.
The files for the main site go in the luisdiazart folder.
Use an external hyperlink to link one to the other.

  • Using iWeb on other servers than dot MAC?

Can people confirm that one can use iWeb with other servers than Apple's dot Mac site? The fine print says: *iWeb publishing requires Internet and webserver access (.Mac recommended). So from that I guess it is feasible but is it easy to set up?
    Thanks
    Rudy

After the sales rep at the Apple store confirmed vehemently that I would lose no functionality publishing to my own server, I was disappointed to discover this was not the case.
I wanted to use my own webserver, since there is a perfectly capable apache server already running on my iMac. I do understand that Apple wants to sell their dotmac product, but they have stranded too many users with their approach on iWeb.
I upgraded to iLife 06 specifically for iWeb, and I feel cheated by the withdrawal of functionality unless I buy their dotmac product.

  • Using iWeb as a website builder. Heplp please.

Dear all, very sorry to ask what I am sure is a very straightforward question but your help would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to use iWeb as a simple website design tool for a community website I have to build. We have our own hosting server capacity and our own registered domain name. Can I design my site using iWeb and then upload to this 3rd party server and have people go to this site by typing in my domain (such as www.mylocalcommunity.co.uk ? Also, the Apple Store demo suggests the templates have page headings like 'My Page' which i'd want to change. Could I do this so its 'Our Page' for example ? Many thanks for such stupid questions !

    Hi,
    In a word Yes.
This is why you have the two options : Publish to .Mac and Publish to a Folder.
You want Publish to a Folder.
You will then upload this folder contents to your hosted site. If empty, that is all you need to do.
If you have a domain you need to tell your registrar which hosting service you want it to point to. That is a bit beyond the scope of a simple iWeb explanation, though ; suffice it to say you could get better info from your hosting service.
In what regards page names, of course you can change them.

  • I have recently had to fire my web designer who was using iWeb.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the site to open in iWeb on my new MacBook Pro.  Is there a way?

I have recently had to fire my web designer who was using iWeb.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the site to open in iWeb on my new MacBook Pro.  Is there a way?

Firstly iWeb CAN'T IMPORT any kind of published html code as it has no import facility.  You can however add html code, javascript and css by selecting the html snippet and placing it on your page the entering the code in here and clicking on Apply.  You DO NOT create a shape as you say - you use the html snippet and place your code in there.
There are not really a lot of ways in which you can write code - if you want to enter small amounts of code, then you would use an ordinary text editor to do this such as Text Edit on a Mac or Text Wrangler.  If you want to add code to iWeb like this, then you would either use the html snippet method in iWeb itself or you would have to publish the site to a local folder from iWeb and open the relevant html page with a text editor and add the additional code in this way and then publish.  However, if he decided to add the code with a text editor, then you would have to upload the pages directly to the server using an ftp client - if you try to upload the site directly from iWeb, all the extra code will be overwritten.
As for checking whether the site was created using iWeb, all you need do is view the site in Safari and then click on View and then select View Source Code and it will tell you.
Even thoough extra code was added to the site and he might well have done this by publishing to a local folder and adding the code with a text editor, he should still have the domain file for the site too.
Ask again.  I'm sure that for adding quick code, most would not want to use programmes such as Dreamweaver, but a simple text editor will suffice.  As OT already said, if he claims that he does not have the domain.sites file, then try Flux 4 which is a web design programme and has full import facilities.  At least this way, if he just gives you the published version of the site, you have some way of opening it.
You can download a free trial of Flux 4 and you can also purchase the full version from the Mac App Store if you decide you like it.

Sorry, but it doesn't help JTANNA.
What is your definition of "more efficiently"? If it's limitation of search results, branded search, and limitation of styling your results then google search is more efficient. Real developers rely on their own developments. For example: how can google search display results from a password-protected site? They can't.

  • Will i no longer be able to use iWeb after June 2012?

i love the ease of using iWeb to design my simple websites, i do not host thru mobile me but another hosting provider. Now iCloud is eliminating iWeb, does this mean i can no longer use this program just to design?

It is now confirmed that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

  • Using IWEB for Documents

    Hi can someone please help???
I would like to use IWEB to set up a central location for all my documents, can anyone advise the best way to do this?
    Many thanks

If you put your documents in iWeb itself they'll be stored in iWeb's Domain file — which is vulnerable to corruption. The following alternative is not necessarily the best way, but take a look at the variety of document types you can store for free on Posterous:
    http://posterous.com/faq
...And if your docs are PDFs, Posterous will automatically display them in a nice viewer, e.g.

  • Using iWeb- Do I need a .Mac acct & Does it Support Sound Clips?

    Hi Everyone,
I am new to the Apple forums. I am returning back to the superior product of Apple after dealing with a very annoying HP for way too long! I was wondering if you can create a web page using iWeb without having a .Mac account? If you can, can anyone tell me if you can add sound clips to the web pages you create? I am a musician and I would like to put some of my music on the web page. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!

PS My computer came with v 1.1.2 of iWeb. I do not have iLife added to my machine.

Yes, you would sign up with a hosting service such as GoDaddy. Then in iWeb you would do: File > Publish to a Folder...
You would need an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to upload your folder of HTML to your hosting service. Here are just a couple from the many that are available:
    http://www.panic.com/transmit/
    http://www.fetchsoftworks.com/
can anyone tell me if you can add sound clips to the web pages you create?
Yes, you can. Here are the instructions from iWeb's Help viewer:
Adding songs or other audio files...
If you want to share your original compositions, you can add audio files to your website. Visitors can listen to the audio while they are visiting the page.
    To add audio:
    1. In the sidebar (on the left side of the iWeb window), select the page you want to add the audio to.
    2. Do one of the following:
◼ To add a single audio file, drag it to the page. If you drag the audio file to the image placeholder on a blog page (the Blog or Podcast template), iWeb creates a podcast.
◼ To add more than one audio file, press Command while you click songs, and then drag the files to the page (not to an image placeholder).
◼ To add links to the songs in the iTunes Store (not the audio files themselves), drag a playlist from the Media Browser or iTunes, or a song from the iTunes Store, to the page.
    3. If you added audio files (not links), you can add a graphic or a text box with a solid color fill to the placeholder above each song’s audio controls.
When you select an audio file on a page, its name appears in the Metrics Inspector.
To see a list of supported audio file types, visit the QuickTime website.

Is there a way to learn the process, also I see a contradiction with ILIFE 2011, reading about an announcement of Steve Jobs....? that iWeb would not longer be??

How is the first page hidden by the other page?  Where are you experiencing this problem?  In iWeb's window or in the browser window of the published site?
Are you referring to the page's link in your navbar?  If so check the Inspector/Page/Page pane for the "hidden" page and make sure it's set to be included in the navbar. If that's not the problem describe in detail what you mean and include any screenshots you can make of the problem.

  • How can I use iweb 1.1.2 for more than one user account on my macbook?

I wonder if someone can guide me or point me to a previous answer on this, since I haven't found one. I'm simply trying to use iweb 1.1.2 on two user accounts (both labled as administrators) on our macbook. The program functions fine on one account, but when I switch over to another user account on the computer iweb will open, but does not let me start a new page, save, etc.
    Thanks much for any response.

Welcome to the discussions. If iWeb's menus are greyed out, the following trick has worked for some:
In the user account which does not let you start a new page, save, etc. — Quit iWeb. Start iPhoto. Select a couple of photos, click on the iWeb icon at lower right and choose Photo Page. iWeb will open up and invite you to choose a template for your new Photos page. Choose any template so that the page is created and then delete that newly created page.
...Now perhaps things are no longer greyed out in iWeb.

  • How can I Publish to a Folder just one of the several websites I have created using iWeb?

How can I Publish to a Folder just one of the several websites I have created using iWeb?
it drives me nuts having to emove all the other websites when I want to upload one.
    Sparrow

For iWeb, I like to do only one site per domain file.  I move domain files out of the Application Support folder and place them inside project or client folders, or in DropBox. Once you duplicate a domain file and begin customizing it, it will load and behave as a separate project/site.
I publish each iWeb domain/project direct to a server via FTP. Sometime I publish to a folder, then upload via FTP manually.
iWeb is a remarkable tool, especially when you work from scratch with blank tamplates

  • Error Publishing Podcast to ITunes using IWeb

I am getting the following error publishing my podcast to Itunes using Iweb.
We had difficulty reading this feed. Bad http result code: 500
When I checked the rss.xml doc that iweb generates, it is very different from what itunes gives as an example. Do you guys plan on making your software match to the Itunes requirements so that it will post. I can edit and upload the xml file, but when iweb publishes again it will simply change it back to the wrong file.
Is there an update coming? What should I do?

Thanks for the suggestion. It seems that from GarageBand the only podcast option is to send it to iWeb. The option exists: "send song" to iTunes, but not "send podcast" directly to iTunes. I don't know if there's a meaningful difference between "song" and "podcast," but I've decided to wait.
I contacted Apple (apparently I haven't yet exhausted my free tech-support options since the purchase of this MacBookPro) and was told that the problem is most likely with iTunes. We'll see what the iTunes team has to say...
Further info I've learned: the audio podcast episode somehow got converted to a ".mov" file somewhere along it's path from being created in GarageBand to it's submission to iTunes. This is still a mystery to me as I specifically chose "MP3" when sending the episode from GarageBand to iWeb. Apple tech-support has passed me along the chain to the iTunes folks who only do tech support via email. So we'll see...

  • Modification to a WebSite by using IWeb

Hope somebody will be able to help me. I have to modify information on a website. My question, how to do the modifications by using Iweb. Thank you.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Was the website created with iWeb. If not then there's no way to make modifications to it.
If iWeb was used to create the web site then you should be able to launch iWeb, make the changes and publish them.

I am running 10.6.8 and using iweb for my web site. After several SEO analysis they all indicate I need H1-6 header tags. After looking at the source code I see there are none in iweb. Are they necessary to add?  Why would one add these tags and how do I add H Tags to iweb? And are there examples to look at? I am slowly learning about simple web design and assumed that iweb was stand alone without having to write code. Is this one of the reasons iweb is no longer supported? Thanks for looking at this!

A simple text page like this:
    Heading
        sub heading
              text paragraph ....
Is traditionally represented by html tags like:
    <h1>Heading</h1>
         <h2>sub heading</h2>
              <p>text paragraph ... </p>
I would guess that the use of h1-h6 tags helps search engines to understand the structure of a page as the tags imply a certain structure.
This can be compared to more generic tags like <div> that could represent any kind of content - and may be what iWeb uses (you'll have to check yourself).
I would generally recommend that you use some kind of up to date blog/site building tool, perhaps Wordpress or Squarespace (I haven't used either one myself) that support current web technologies - this should reduce your SEO issues and make it easier to properly support mobile/tablet users.
