OK, So I'm an IT professional but I'm working on my husband's machine which introduces a whole new set of risks - like staying married
He has an old G5 running Tiger and I just got him the new i5 for Christmas. I'm getting ready to migrate everything over, but I'm second guessing myself. Any affirmation or suggestions would go a long way before I proceed. I plan on doing a complete back up as a precautionary measure, but should I upgrade him to the latest version of 10.5 first? Also, should i do a complete migration, or just move over his profile? We have most of the media for his apps with the exception of a just a few I can't locate. I would really prefer to not have to re-install all his software, as he's a media hog. Anyone willing to share best practice on this? Thanks

most people Migrate using Migration Assistant without many problems. I would not bother trying to install Leopard on his machine first. that just might introduce further complications. however, problems when migrating from PPC to intel and jumping over on OS version are certainly possible.

I do not necessarily advocate going straight for manual migration as this link suggests. you can try MA first. if it leads to problem you can always do a wipe and install and use manual migration.
before migrating make sure that all the apps are SL compatible.
rebuild all your mailboxes in Mail if you are using it.
also, if migrating applications leads to problems you can try migrating user accounts and data only but not applications. of course that will mean reinstalling all the apps from scratch.

my older brother's 24" iMac running Leopard 10.5.8 is having issues and shuts itself off without notice so we got him a new 27" iMac off the apple website.
We also bought the Apple Extended warranty due to his & my computer skills are limited plus he lives in another state for a quick drop by to help with my limited skills as well.
His local non apple tech person thinks the old iMac probably has an issue with Mother board causing computer to shut itself down and suggested replacing old mac with a newer one which we did.
I was visiting my older brother who lives out of state a couple weeks ago when the new iMac arrived so I tried to transfer data off old HD to new iMac via USB cable but got error message saying the old iMac also had to be running OS Yosemite!
Due to how far back his old iMac OS version is, and not knowing where / how to get the newer OS disks needed what are his options to get data from Old iMac to new iMac?
Also, his old iMac shut down again and he has not been able to get the old mac to start back up so upgrading OS's does not seem to be an option now.
Before his mac shut down, my brother thinks someone told him that if he had iCloud set up his data could transfer via iCloud?   I have no idea if that is correct nor how to set that up.
if i remember correctly when i was there a couple weeks ago when the old iMac was running during the process of trying to transfer data I think the new computer also gave another option on how to transfer-migrate data but I don't' remember what that was?
DUE to the old imac may not start up again, can't he have the old iMac HD removed and put into an external case and plug it into new iMac as and external HD & then take files off for use on the new iMac?

Thanks that was very helpful for transferring files and looks like it solves the problem with not having to update the Operating Systems to Yosemite.
I forgot to ask about how does one transfer actual Programs like MS Office for example from the old drive?
Transferring files using the drag and drop process is simple enough but don't actual Programs like MS Office have a much more complicated/larger data package that may be located in various places on the old HD versus files are much smaller and are in one place?
If I remember right when i got a new iMac a few years ago, my old mac was still working so i was able to use a cable to transfer data & programs off it to newer iMac and ALL of the Programs like Office etc. transferred over including user accounts etc.? I may be wrong as its been a few years?
Again Any help & or suggestions are appreciated!

If you try to open message viewer window then mail program crashes. Would really like to get my old emails back as the old imac is totally dead. Thanks for any help.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Thanks Mende1; I know that PPC apps won't function on Intel machines but I can migrate the Universal apps, right? There is such a large gap between Tiger and Mountain Lion - can I still migrate files directly from one to the other taking the Universal apps as well? Sorry, I'm not very computer savvy!

Whether using Oracle after migrating from MySQL be easy or not?

Though oracle is tough secured one, I don't know exactly the complexity of using Oracle database. Using MySQL 4.1.22 in my website https://www.puntercalls.com/ . Though the site is based on providing share market tips, it deals with a huge amount of stock market data and in much more real time basis hand-to-hand with NSE and BSE info which means a tough security is the utmost demand of the time.

It looks as though 2011 is not compatible with 2003 per some searches online, but what are some options I have to gain full access again? I purchased parallels in hopes that this my help and I am able to use remote desktop connection to log on to server but can not drag and drop files I need. There is a shared drive on that Server we all use to exchange files.
The two main issues are gaining access to my email again and ability to drag and drop files from mac to pc. I hope this is enough info to get some solutions.
PS - IT person says my iMac's IP is what his server does not understand so that is why I can not login.

Office 2011 is not compatbile with Exchange 2003.

Can I reboot my new iMac running OS 10.7 into Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an external hard drive

I have installed my hard drive from a previous but terminally I'll iMac that was running Snow Leopard into a Sata to USB enclosure. This is displaying on the desktop of my new iMac running Lion as an external Hard drive,also system preferences sees it as a start up source.My question is , is it safe to restart into Snow leopard without causing a kernel panic and if it does boot will it be fast enough to use as it as a USB drive.I know I could try it and see, but I would rather some advice.

Yes you should be able to (as long as your computer didn't ship with lion, if so idk it would prob work though) although be aware it will be MUCH slower than the normal OS. Hope this helps!

Porting CS3 from old Mac OS 10.4.11 to a new iMac using Mac OS 10.8.4?

I had been using CS3 on a Mac Mini running it on OS 10.4.11. The programs had been installed on one of my two external HD's. I upgraded my computer equipment to a new iMac running OS10.8.4, which also has both of my HD's connected to it. I also am running Acrobat Pro 11.0.03 as a separate, stand-alone program because I was initially under the impression that CS6 had some problems with Mountain Lion that did not include the latest version of Acrobat Pro. So I purchased that program separately and did not purchase CS6.
When I tried to run the other CS3 programs, I first received a message that Java JRE was not installed. I followed the instructions on the Adobe website and installed Java for my current OS. Now when I attempt to run the programs I get a dialogue box message that says "you cannot use the product at this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your IT administrator (that would be me) or Adobe customer support for help."
Before I go through the process of uninstalling and reinstalling from my disks, I have a couple of questions:
1. If I go through the uninstall - install steps with my original disks, will the software work under the new Mac OS 10.8.4?
2. What is the problem that the uninstall - install step is supposed to be solving?
3. Since I have the newest version of Acrobat Pro already installed, can I avoid installing that particular program if the answer to question #1 is affirmative? Will installing the other components of CS3 corrupt any of the support files for Acrobat 11.0.03?

CS3 is not supported under 10.8. No matter what you do you're on your own.
You can buy CS6 but not at an upgrade price or move to Creative Cloud.

Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.

Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD

7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it.

Well, the Import/Export instructions make it seem as if the two computers should be able to communicate this file thru wifi, but that's the linkage I can't seem tocreate with Import/Export. Should I instead email a copy to myself (thats what applecare suggested)? Copy it to and from a thumb drive? But then place the file where? And the article was helpful, but should I be trying to move the Library file or the Library.xml file (as iTunes Help suggests)?
