Using macbook as wireless router

I am using macbook pro and i have set up network sharing (cable internet). The Macbook was being used as wireless router on my smartphones and ipad within home. Suddenly the I cant seem to connect my devices with the wi-fi connection, I tried rebooting macbook, change in WPA password, restarting the modem but the devices connect to the wifi network but the internet is not working on any connected devices. The internet is otherwise fine on the macbook.
please suggest if I need to do something else...

I think Apple sort of put the brakes on using laptops as wifi routers, it's a security issue obviously as the Mac is direclty connected to the Internet and has so much capability to compromise other devices.
Having your devices behind a router is more secure, they first have to hack that first to get into your machines.
Most routers are better as they are sort of dumb, thus lack the complexity to be compromised easier for the rest of the machines on the LAN.
Your best bet is to get a Wireless N router, I suggest a Netgear router as I've had very good success with them and they don't spy on you like Cisco (Linksys) routers do and not a pain in the arse like Airport routers are.
With Apple's routers you can't turn off PING requests, so your open to your network being slowed by PING attacks and hackers as the Airport routers respond to anyone asking, thus thieves know you have expensive Apple goodies in the house or office. Airport routers require a lot of updates as they do other things, which make them a hassle to manage and in my opinion easier to hack.
Netgear routers are already setup out of the box, rather secure, but not as secure as they should be, it all depends how new of the model and how long it's been sitting on the shelf as they make changes to the new stock and provide firmware updates online before you activate it.

  • Use Macbook as Wireless Router??

    Hey guys,
I just set up my desktop computer and it doesn't have a Wifi Card in it so I'm wondering if I can somehow utilize my Macbook's Wifi capabilities to get internet on my desktop. I have no Idea if this is even possible, but I just wanted to make sure before I go out and buy something for it. Thanks ahead of time for the help!

Yeah, just connect the two computers with an ethernet cable and activate Internet Sharing on your MacBook.
    See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8156.html
You'll want to share from your AirPort to your Ethernet.

  • Using AX as wireless router, how to set up w/ security and airtunes on XP

I previously had a Linksys wireless router. I just purchased an Airport express to use as the wireless router (and remove the Linksys router) as well as use the Airtunes functionality.
After some trial and error, I have been able to wireless connect my computer to the AX on it's own (the linksys router is now unplugged and out of the equation). I can connect to the internet fine on my PC (XP Pro SP2).
Trouble is, when I use the Network Setup Assistant, it shows the apple network listed, but it can't connect to it, no matter how many times I try, reboot my machine or reboot the AX. I've tried both the "setting up a new network" and "editing an existing network" option, and in each selection, after a few minutes of trying to connect to the network, I just get a failure message.
If I try and use the Admin utility, nothing shows up in the left-hand list window, and when I Press re-scan, still nothing shows (it doesn't even appear to scan).
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I can't find simple instructions on how to set up the AX as the only wireless router for a PC and set up security and Airtunes (I'm assuming enabling airtunes is done in these applications, as I haven't seen anything about that yet either).
Any ideas on how this is done with a PC? Much thanks!

I have found the 'DHCP Reservations' option on the AirPort Extreme to be buggy.  I seem to remember it causing IP conflicts for some reason.  I think what I remember is that if the computer with the reservation was off, and the DHCP server then handed out that IP to another DHCP client, then there would be a conflict when the reserved IP computer was turned back on.  Maybe it was an issue in ealier versions of the AE or OS X as the case may be, and maybe it's been corrected, but I've never bothered using it agian since the method I describe below has always worked without fail.  Also, I'm guessing DHCP Reservations would work fine if one manually enters IPs outside of the DHCP range but in the AE 'DHCP Reservation Setup Assistant' the IP options provided are within the DHCP range which to me makes no sense and increases the potential for IP conflicts.
Here's what I do to setup a mixed environment of static and dynamic IPs on my network.  It works like a charm and does not require the DHCP server (beyond the distribution of dynamic IPs to hosts using DHCP).
For machines on my network that are accepting services from the public network, I set them up with static IPs using the 'Manually' option (System Preferences/Network/Ethernet/Configure IPv4).  The settings for 'Router' IP address and 'DNS Server' IP address should both be set with your gateway/router LAN IP).  Use an IP address below or above the DHCP range of adresses (in AE/Internet/DHCP/DHCP Beginning & Ending Address).
i.e. if my subnet is 10.0.1.1 and my DHCP range is 10.0.1.100 to 10.0.1.150, you could set the static IPs on your local hosts as 10.0.1.x where x = any number from 2 - 99 or from 151 - 200 as an example.
All other machines and devices that do not require static routing are setup as DHCP clients and get a dynamic IP from the AE.  To me it's a simpler setup though it might take a little extra time to setup initially.

  • I can't get a signal through whole house because of a brick wall   What range extender do you recommend to be used with my wireless router ( apple brand)

I can't get a signal through whole house because of a brick wall   What range extender do you recommend to be used with my wireless router ( apple brand)

Very few 3rd party wireless extenders will work with an Apple router, so your best bet is always to use an extender that is the same brand as the main router. An AirPort Express is a popular choice for this type of application with another Apple router.
If you had a Cisco router, then a Cisco extender would be your best bet.  Same for Netgear, etc.
But......a wireless extender can only "extend" the quality of wireless signal that it receives, and not much of a wireless signal is going to make it through a brick wall, so whether any extender might do what you want is open to question.
You won't know whether an extender using wireless to connect will work to your satisfaction in your home until you actually try it out in your home.
The performance will always be much better if you can connect the extending device back to the main router using a wired Ethernet cable connection.
If it is not possible to run the Ethernet cable, a pair of Ethernet power line adapters might be able to send the signal over the existing AC power lines in your home. The theory with these devices is that you already have the wiring in place, you just need the adapters.
In practice though, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest, so if you decide to try a pair of adapters, it might be a good idea to understand the store's return policies before you buy.

  • While using mac as wireless router ; How to make Mac sleep?

    Hi all.
I set up my macbook to act as a wireless router [sharing it's wireless signal, via the "Sharing" settings in System Preferences]
    using this guide
    http://www.macinstruct.com/node/118
I am wondering how to make my mac sleep while this wireless-sharing setting is enabled?
Since I have enabled this setting, the mac will not sleep, however, the mac will sleep when I disable it.
I am also wondering ; [if it is possible to make the mac sleep while this setting is enabled], can I still use the mac as a wireless router even while it is asleep?
Or does it need to be awake to function as a router?
Thanks very much in advance for any help!

Thank you very much everybody for your answers.

Yes, I kind of thought what you are saying would be the case.
It makes "sense" that when the computer is asleep, so are all it's functions,
but I *WISH* there was an option to keep the airport functioning even while the computer is asleep.
Bob, I don't think having the OPTION to leave the airport on while mac sleeps would defeat the power-saving feature of the computer (:
I know the "best" way to share wifi is with a router, but for me, a router just another piece of plastic I don't need. All I need to do is share wifi in a small space [my room] from my mac to my iPad and ipod touch.
I like to use my ipad as a reader, and when I am reading, I may be sitting down for many hours just reading from the ipad. It doesn't make sense to leave the mac running during these long periods just for a wireless signal, so I may sadly buy a router ):
Anyway, I get what you are all saying, and thank you for telling me the current limits of this function.
    Cheers! (:

  • Can I Show Time Connected When Using Netgear DG834 Wireless Router ?

When I had an old SpeedTouch USB Modem I could see the time I had been connected to the internet from a readout in the menu along the top of the monitor.
Is there a way of displaying or ascertaining this information using the Netgear DG834 wireless router?
I have discovered that by opening the Router Satus and clicking on "Connected Status" I can get a window displaying this info - but is there a quicker "automatic" way of doing it?
    Ian.

    Hi Ian,
    Interesting one…
When you connect via a USB modem the computer is 'doing' the connecting using the modem so the computer has the 'time connected' status available locally. In the case of a router it is connected to the internet irrespective of the computer's status; on, off, sleep, or even, connected to the router. The only way you're going to get the info is from the router itself and, unless it has a setting whereby it will automatically 'inform' the computer of its connected time, I think you're going to have to carry on as you are.
I don't know that particular Netgear but used to have a different one until a thunderstorm fried it. I don't remember it having such a setting. My current Belkin certainly hasn't.
I'm quite interested to know why you want this info. Are you on some kind of PAYG tariff?

  • Using Blackberry as Wireless Router

PDaNET software can be downloaded to a Blackberry to use it as a wireless router. Does anyone know if this will work with the iPAD? You would also have to download Blackerry Desktop Support driver to the iPAD. I don't know if that is possible. Any help appreciated.

You cannot install the Blackberry Software on to the iPad.
The only Applications you can install are those you get from the App Store.

  • Using AX as wireless router in Panama

Hello all. I am having no luck using my AX as a wireless router since I moved to Panama. I used it without any issues when I lived in the States, but am out of ideas on why it won't work here. I have a high speed cable connection & am using a Motorola modem (the same model I had in the US). I have strong signal strength fromthe AX, but no internet. I can connect via ethernet so I know it's not at the modem level. Any suggestions? Thanks.

tschnip, Welcome to the discussion area!
Remember that whenever you switch the Ethernet connection from the cable modem from one device to another you need to power down the cable modem. This causes the cable modem to forget the device it was talking to. When the cable modem is powered on, it will discover a new device to talk to.
I don't know if you have done that or not.

  • WPG54G - Used as a wireless router?

Forgive me for this but I know next to nothing about this kind of stuff. I discovered a family member's old WPG54G wireless presentation player. I'm not sure if this is strictly a presentation player (whatever that is) or if this can be used as an actual wireless router. I plugged the ethernet cable into it and tried accessing the 192.168.1.200 page but to no avail. I'd like to get this running as a standard wireless router for my home if possible.

I think you can not use this device as a wireless router.
The versatile Linksys Wireless-G Presentation Player is the ultimate presentation tool. In the conference room, it
can act as a 54Mbps access point to your network, and also connects via a standard VGA connector to your
projector or monitor. Any wireless-equipped computer within range (and with permission) can take control of the
Player and project live screen images of any application running on the PC.

  • Using non Internet wireless router for AirPrint, kills Internet experience via data plan.

Just bought an HP Laserjet Pro 400 with AirPrint.  In order to use it I added a wireless router, that is not connect to the Internet, as I am remote.  How can I print and go on the Internet without have to turn on and off my wifi?  I work remotely so I have no dsl or cable to plug my router into, yet in order to use my AirPrint I must have a router.  If I am connected to a wifi, my iPad assumes that is my preferred method to connect to the Internet....

I believe Verizon will only carry wireless N routers at the moment due to the fact that wireless AC is still in draft. Wireless N has been standardized.  But, glad to hear you got things working well enough. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try asking for higher speeds to be delivered over the DSL. Most folks coming directly from a central office or from a specific type of remote terminal can get speeds reaching to 7Mbps or 15Mbps.

  • Can I use my WRT54G wireless router as a signal range extender?

Hello, I have a couple wireless routers in my home, and basically I guess I can only use one as the main wireless router.
I'd really like to know if I can use one, specifically my linksys WRT54G wireless G router as just a range extender for the wireless signal from the main wireless router. It would save me a bunch so that I wouldn't need to go buy an entirely new device for this. If there is ANY way.
    please help
    thank you

You can connect as many WRTs as you like to your network if you wire them together. They create a big roaming network then (or several different networks if you want that). You have to set up the "internal" WRTs as access points, though, i.e. you don't connect them through the Internet port to your network but through a numbered LAN port. Also make sure to turn off the DHCP server on the internal WRTs and to assign them a free LAN IP address in your LAN (usually 192.168.1.2,3,4 will work).
In a roaming network there is no main router. All wireless routers are the same in this respect. Your "main" router is only defined by the fact, that it hosts the internet connection. But from the side of the wireless is does not matter. For a roaming network, make sure to assign all access points the identical SSID and wireless security settings. The only difference in the wireless settings should be the channels, where you should use different ones if possible. 1,6, and 11 are non-overlapping and thus are best to be used.
O.K. This was with a wired connection. If you actually need a wireless bridge, i.e., connect to access points through a wireless connection without any wired connection between them, then you have two options:
    1. Buy access points like the WAP54G or wireless bridges like the WET54G. They have can be configured for wireless bridging. A WRT54G with standard Linksys firmware does not have this capability.
    2. Get a 3rd party firmware for your WRT54G if there is one available for your hardware version. I think not all hardware versions support 3rd party firmware. Check on the label underneath the router to see what hardware version you have. Search for "WRT54G" on wikipedia. You'll find an article about the different hardware versions, which 3rd party firmware projects exist and where to download it. 3rd party firmware usually adds functions like wireless bridging to a WRT. I know HyperWRT+Thibor works well on my WRT54Gv2. Remember, however, that uploading a 3rd party firmware will void your warrenty...

  • Is is possible to use a netgear wireless router to share a cable internet connection between an airport express and a Sony BD player?

    Hi,
I have a couple of netgear wireless routers (WGR614, WPN824 v3) as well as a Belkin wireless router (F5D8233-4v3) lying around, and was wondering if it is possible to use any of these to share the internet feed from a cable modem to both an airport express and a Sony Blu-Ray Player?  I connected the WPN824 router between the cable modem and the airport express but the airport express will only give an orange light then as if it does not have internet access.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Many thanks.

What you are basically attempting to do is extend the Belkin router with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) via a wireless connection between them. This method is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, WDS is not a standard and router manufacturers implemented, in most part, to only work with their products ... so it will be very unlikely that you can create a WDS between your Belkin and the AX. There have been a few Belkin model that have been updated by third-party firmware that support WDS, but the models you listed are not any of them.

  • Use WRTP54G-ER wireless router with other ISP?

I got a Linksys WRTP54G-ER router with 2 phone ports from Circuitcity. We have Cable phone, and internet services with Times Warner.
On the package of the router it shows "Wireless-G broadband Router with 2 phone ports, Configured specifically for Earthlink trueVoice services"
Will this router works with the system we now have?

Yes it will work fine with the Cable Connection ...if you want to use Phone service you need to contact the Earthlink .... voice service provider ...

  • How to test the encryption used in my wireless router?

How can I test my router for weak encryption keys? WEP and WPA..

If you're using WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK and your PSK is short (<20 letters) and it's a "normal" word (from the dictionary) it's possibe to hack it. WPA2 is a bit more secure but good PSK is important.
This article describes details about hacking WEP/WPA. Unfortunatelly it's not free but maybe you can find a printed version of this magazine in your country in some library or you can just buy the article.

besides the Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. Thanks!

I use and very highly recommend Netgear routers. I use their WGR614 in my mixed Mac/PC/Xbox/Wii network setup and it performs like a charm. It was easy to configure through their broswer configuration setup and does exactly what it is supposed to do - and it cost me all of $40 at Best Buy.
