Using MIDI controller - Delay (Laten

Im using an M-Audio Radeum6 key controller connected to the computer via USB. The software for the keyboard is installed and working properly. There is a serious delay in sound being generated by my audio software from the midi controller. I realize that MIDI controllers do not generate sound, but notes - and the audio software generates the sound. How can I eliminate the latency? there should be none if everything is working properly. I have an Audigy 2 LS and believe it should be capable of playing the midi controller immediately as the controllers manual says it will. What am I doing wrong? Is there some setting, driver, connection, etc. which is not setup properly?

noiziman,
The ASIO drivers deals with digital audio signals between the software and the card, and it isn?t related with MIDI signals.
Anyway, it isn't clear from the original question if the delay comes from the MIDI device itself or from the digital audio processing, since for the later he should be using a software synth. If he's using the hardware sampler (i.e. Emu0k processor in internal SB Li've/SB Audigy with SoundFonts), the problem shouldnt have to do with ASIO.
To chek out this, i?d record in a MIDI track the signals received from the MIDI device (with the proper timming it should have, no matter the current latency of the resulting sound), and then i'd inspect the track (or it'ss event list view) looking for the singnals recorded from the controller. If the signals where received on time (that is, the timestamp matches the timestamp of an associated music event), then the latency comes from the synth. With a software synth, the ASIO settings would help with the latency (or a faster computer :-).
But if the timestamp doesn?t fit where theyre supposed to fit, then the delay comes from the MIDI cables or setup. If so, try:
) To increase the "ticks per quarter note" in the MIDI setup for the song (or decrease this, if the problem comes from overloading the MIDI network with signals)
2) Rewire the MIDI cables, i.e., avoiding chaining this controller trough other devices nor using MIDI THRU. At least i?d try pluging the controller right into the MIDI IN from the soundcard to test the latency.
3) I don't know that controller, but if it's a synchronized one, try turning off sync (or using another device for sync).
Hope this hel
ps.

  • Turning Region Loops On and off using MIDI controller

    hi,
i got an Akai MPD24 MIDI controller today for a gig in two days...basically what I need it to do is to assign a pad on it to play a MIDI region in a loop when I press it once, then stop playing the region when I press it again. From reading the manual I've got the impression you need to use Touch Tracks, but at the moment how you go about assigning a pad to loop a MIDI region is going over my head! I'm sure this is a very easy thing to do but I'm new to this sort of stuff...could anyone give me some pointers on how to do it? Cheers.

Your gig seems to be done, but in case you still need to know and haven't figured out how to do it:
    • create a Touch Track
    • open it
    • drop the regions on it's keys (beginning on the lower notes)
    • assign all the tracks that shouldn't mute one-another to different groups
    • set Trigger Mode to „Toggle Loop“
    • adjust the other parameters the way you need them
I think the Touch Tracks have great potential, but editing them really isn't as slick as is should be…

  • Onscreen piano keys stuck when using midi controller

    Hi,
I am using a Yamaha PSR-172 as my midi controller. I use SoundTech's Lightsnake as my midi-usb connector. It is supposed to power the Yamaha keyboard from the usb, but it doesn't; I still need to use the yamaha power adaptor. Anyway, my onscreen keyboard displays the notes I play on the Yamaha; they colour as I play them via the controller. Sometimes they continue to make sound after I have released them, and the onscreen keys stay coloured. The sound continues until I change instruments or close garageband. There is no problem with the Yamaha PSR-172 when I use it as a stand alone instrument. Any explanation or suggestion would be appreciated.

No, I'm not using a sustain pedal. I'm using the Microkorg and the keys are pretty horrible (sticky and aren't that responsive), could it be this that's causing the notes to sustain indefinitely (until I press the key of the note that won't stop ringing)?
Yes, it could be that no note off (or similar/equivalent message) is being sent. You should watch your MIDI in/out on the right side of the display in the transport bar and assert if any message is being sent when you release the key. It could be that when you strike it a second time that the note off message is being sent, especially if the electrical contacts are dirty.
A new keyboard will probably solve that, yes. Unless it also has dirty contacts.

  • "zipper" noise when using MIDI controller

When using MIDI faders to control guitar amp settings (gain, EQ, etc) I hear a very loud "zipper" noise when I make changes. This makes it very unlikely I can use it live. Has anyone else experienced this?

By "flakey as heck," I mean that the stop button stops play, and brings it back to the beginning of the song, even if I only hit it once. In other words, I can't just stop playback where the song is at the moment I hit stop. When I hit fast forward or rewind, it doesn't always respond, and when it does, it often skips randomly, sometimes going one step in the grid, sometimes more than one, sometimes not at all. I think what is happening is that the transport controls are trying to control Logic but using messages designed for Reason. I say this only because, when I am using Logic, but not Reason in ReWire, the transport controls work exactly as they should.

  • I want to use my ipad as a midi controller on my MacBook pro via USB no with wiFi connection, is this possible ?

hi guys, i am new to garageband.
i have the Ipad 4th generation and just installed garageband on my mackbook pro, i see that i can use my ipad as a midi controller via WiFi but there is a delay, my question is: Can i use my ipad as a midi controller via the USB connection, that will eliminate de lag or delay.
    thanks

Keynote Remote, but you will need wifi. You can set up an ad-hoc wifi network from your Macbook itself ("Create Network" from the Wifi menu), which the iPad can connect to.

  • How do I hook my Keyboard up to my computer to use it as a MIDI controller?

Ok, I'm new to MACS and new to LOGIC. I just installed logic and all of its components on my IMAC. OSX 10.6.3 Once I installed everything, I tried to hook up my electric piano to use it as a MIDI controller. Mind you, I am also completely new to MIDI. My Piano is a KORG sp-300. I used an Alesis Audio Link USB- MIDI cable to connect my keyboard directly to a usb port in my MAC. I hooked up the midi side of the connector to the midi in and out on my keyboard, and plugged in the usb side to the computer. I then went to the Audio Midi set up, and looked in the midi studio, and there was the USB2MIDI(which is associated with the Alesis cord, and not my Korg piano) and the IAC driver from MAC. I checked so that both are online, and didn't change any of the other settings. I did a test set up, but when I played notes on the keyboard nothing happened.
So now when I open Logic, or garage band for that matter, it doesn't recognize that I have a midi controller hooked up. When I look in midi preferences in garageband, it says that there are 2 midi devices detected. In logic it says that there is no input or output.
I read the manual for LOGIC and for my Korg, and I am lost. Korg says that it transmits on 1 channel, automatically set to channel 1 if not adjusted, and receives on 16. If I am correct, right now I am not interested in receiving, only transmitting.
At this point, I just want to select a software instrument in Logic, play my Korg, and see notes(or MIDI data) appear in the arrange area. I don't know what's going on, but again, I am completely lost.
Could someone please help me here? Am I missing an obvious step? Like I said, I am new to all of this, so please let me know if you have any idea how to get my midi controller to work. It says in the Korg manual that it can be used as a controller, or a multitimbral tone generator. And I did switch the Local Off.
By the way, who would be best to call to solve this issue. MAC? Sweetwater(where I bought the Alesis cord, and Logic)? Or Korg?
Please let me know if you have any helpful advice.
    Thanks,
    Tristan

  • How can I use my iPad 4gen as a MIDI controller?

    Hello there,
I have the iPad 4 generation. I have been reading that it is possible to use my iPad as a MIDI controller to help me with making music on my Windows computer and want to do this. What I've seen on the Internet from other people, is that they use an iPad camera adapter with other cables to connect to their computers. I have a few concerns with this, one was that if it can only be done with jail breaking my iPad, if it does please let me know so I just don't try it. Another concern that I have, if i can actually do this without jail breaking, is that I have the new Lighting connection and I see people do it with the old 30 pin connection and want to know if I can still do it with this iPad.
If I there are adapters I can use with my iPad 4 generation can you help me out by telling what I need to buy to do this with my iPad.
    Thanks,
    Alan V.

    Hi there,
At this time you cannot use your iPad as a display like you describe.
However, you can buy the extra Camera Connection Kit, to import video and pictures from some camera's and SD Cards.
I urge you to submit feedback to Apple:

Req any examples of how to use a USB midi controller/keyboards with Labview TIA

    Hi,
To access the MIDI ports you will need to call the Windows SDK. To send MIDI commands is relatively easy, here is an example that shows you how to send data to a MIDI controller or keyboard.
As far as input goes, this is the hard part. There are a series of functions that you need to call to open up the device, set some buffers and and possibly a callback to get notifications on the incoming data.
Reading MIDI data will not be an easy task, your best bet will be to implement this in a DLL and call that DLL in LabVIEW, there should be some code available o the web.
= "http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/multimed/htm/_win32_multimedia_... is a link to the Windows multimedia functions that you could use for MIDI input.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • How to use a specific MIDI controller to control instruments loudness?

Hi, I just started using Logic, so it's possible I will find the answer to this question by myself over time, but maybe somebody can point me to the answer right now...
I want to control the loudness (volume) of a software instruments over time, for a given note, using a MIDI controller channel. The note velocity only controls the loudness of the attack.
Of course this is not applicable for an instruments such as the piano, but it is quite important for string or wind instruments where you can attack a note very softly but keep playing louder on the same note.
The MIDI controller to control that could be after touch. In my case, it would be CC2 (breath control), as I use a wind controller.
My experiment so far is that Logic sees the value of CC2 correctly, but whatever its value, the loudness of the note sound never changes.
I understand that the answer to that question might depend on the instrument under consideration. Then an example would be of great help.
    Many thanks.

    Jean-Denis Muys wrote:

As it was suggested you can try CC11 or you can transform your existing CC2 to CC11. Patch a transformer between the Physical Input and the Sequencer Input in Click & Ports Environment layer and make the next settings in the transformer:
    Conditions
    Status=Control
    Data Byte 1 (= 2)
    Operations
    Data Byte 1 (Fix 11)
It this scenario your incoming CC2 will be transformed into CC11 and you can control the Expression (CC11) of a software instrument if it responds to that controller at all ( some software instruments must be mapped previously to have such respond ). Note you will be able to control only the selected track this way.
You can try to use the Controller Assignment dialog and learn CC2 to control the "level" parameter of an instrument or its channel strip level fader, gainer plugin (which can be inserted in the top plugin slot) etc as well.

  • Using a midi controller with Amplitube and Logic 9

    Hi all
I'm stuck as helll at the moment can someone please help???
I'm trying to use my Line 6 x3 live as a MIDI controller for amplitube (whilst this is being used as a VST plug-in) for Logic 9.
    Heres my setup.
Line6 x3live connected by USB and midi IN and OUT to a Focusrite Saffire USB - connected by USB to my IMAC (27 inch standard spec) and running this on logic 9 with Amplitube as a VST.
If any one can provide a step by step guide i'd be bloody grateful.
    Thanks

Unfortunately there is no way to use the remaining knobs, sliders and buttons on your Axiom. My work around was to buy the Korg NanoKontrol. It is a cheap controller with knobs, buttons, sliders and transport controls that integrates perfectly with GB. There is a little plugin on the Korg site to DL and install to use with GB so you don't need to use the garageremote with your axiom.
    Cheers.
