Using my new ipod touch as a PDA

I received an Ipod touch 8GB for Christmas from my husband and I believe he intended for me to be able to use this as a replacement for my Windows Based PDA by Toshiba. I have used a Windows based PDA for many years and really need to have the ability to manipulate MS Office documents, as well as utilize cut, copy, and paste within these documents and applications. I think his main idea was that it has internet access, that needs to be connected via a WiFi hotspot or my home network, which I did not have with my older PDA. I also do not like to look at this tiny screen for internet use, it just doesn't make sense if I have to scroll around to read whatever is on the screen, I'd rather just have it all right there on one larger screen so I don't get carpal tunnel and/or bad eyesight. Also, I need to have access to the files without having internet access, as I have been advised I can use GoogleDocs, but I don't think that I could still manipulate the data even if I store them there.
I was able to sync my contacts and calendar, but without any categories! This is very inefficient for me as I work for a company and am self-employed and have a lot of personal contact information as well, and need to separate out my contact lists. My husband utilizes the same contact files as I do and he ends up syncing the whole contact list over as well (I got him an ipod touch 8GB also). I can not select multiple contacts, or any other multiple list, such as bookmarks, and delete a batch of them, like I can within Windows. I do intend to purchase an Apple based computer in the future, but for now, I need to have the functionality to use with my current applications. This still does not solve the problem with multiple select or copy/paste, mainly because the touch screen moves with my finger movement, so I cannot scroll to select multiple items.
Besides this being a really expensive music and game player with internet access?, I'm really not very happy with the functionality this has to offer for a PDA, so now I get to carry 3 gadgets with me (my phone, PDA, and now my ipod touch).
If any of these issues can be addressed and hopefully solved, can you please tell me what else I can do to make this work better for me. Thanks for listening!

I do not find the Touch is a very efficient PDA for the reasons you have identified. It is essentially a high end media player with enhancements. The calendar is lacking, unable to mass email a contact list unless selecting each one (essentially a contact list on the Touch is just a visual group list with no functionality beyond that, what is the sense of that?).
People will direct you to acquire apps that do add some function, but still lacking in some very basic elements for on the fly document and task management.
Apparently although I have not subscribed, Mobile Me adds to the depth of the on board calendar and email functions allowing you to coordinate and syncronize your Outlook environment and content with your Touch or Iphone, but honestly it is more of a personal data management tool than a business tool. Plus when released over the summer integration with Apples previous service was flawed and the the whole interface crashed for both old users being transferred and new users subscribing.
To me sounds like you should check out competitors (am I allowed to say Blackberry here?)

I was using my new iPod Touch when the screen suddenly turned unresponsive, after a dozen seconds the iPod's screen turned white with colored lines. It is unresponsive and won't allow me to reset it from my computer. I was using an app and I want my iPod to work! Please help, I have many personal videos that to me seem more valuable than the device itself, please help!!!

    - Try here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't turn it off then let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try again.
    - If still unsuccessful then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Using the new ipod touch as a hard drive and so enabling indexing

    Hi,
is it possible to mount the ipod touch as a hard drive and then search this using spotlight.
I have the 5 th generation ipod at the mo and after enabling indexing I can search this using spotlight.
    Cheers,
    Steve

How do you tell your computer to see your iPod touch as a drive?
You can't from within iTunes with the iPod touch. You have to use third-party App such as:

  • Is it okay to use your new iPod Touch before charging it for the first time? I did and then listened to it while charging and syncing. Thanks

Just got the 5G Touch. I turned it on and was using the camera and stuff before I charged it for the first time. Then while charging, I listened to the music I was syncing through the speakers. This okay? I remember reading to always charge full before ever doing anything on them. Doesnt say anything in the startup manual though.
    Thanks guys.

Should be OK. Just make sure that the iPod is charging.

  • Can I use a  new ipod touch in an old dock/speaker system

I will be in the states soon and thinking of getting and I pod touch the 5th edition. However I have an older dock/speaker system and wonder will it work in it. I have heard that you have to buy an adaptor. Is this true and are they easy to get and how expensive are they. Also is there any issue with buying one in the states and using it in Europe

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter?fnode=72
is the lightning to 30 pin adapter. There are some third party ones out there, but not a ton. If you go for a third party one go for a name brand not a no name generic.
If you want to buy one, look for a retailer with a good return policy so if it doesn't work you can take it back.
As to world wide use, shouldn't be a problem. The only thing you need to worry about is making sure you have a plug adapter if your charger is rated for world wide voltage, or making sure you have a charger that can handle the world wide variances in power. (Usually rated 100-240V in the specs)

  • Trying to transfer a large file using new ipod touch.

I am trying to transfer a large file (17gigs)using my new ipod touch. I got a new laptop and i am trying to get some things on it. I was able to do this last time with my old ipod classic. It would let me copy/paste the file or drag it. But with the ipod touch i can not do either of those. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you very much.

  • Has anyone tried syncing the new iPod Touch 4 with OS 10.4.11?

I know the "official" Apple spec's state the new iPod Touch 4 are
for it to sync with OS 10.5.8 and use iTunes 10 .... but has anyone been
successful in using the new iPod Touch 4 with OS 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2.1?

Does iTunes see the iPod? If not
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    or
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
You need iTunes 10.7 or later on the computer
The iPod touch uses different drivers than the Nano

  • Mail sync issue with new iPod Touch

I have been unable to successfully perform an initial mail sync using my new iPod Touch 32 GB with Version 3.1.1.
All is being successfully sync'd with the exception of mail. The error box when I click on mail with the iTouch reads - "Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the server mail.me.com failed"
I have an active .Mac account. I can successfully log into "mobileme" via my G5 1.8 dual running OS X 10.5.8. My cable web provider is Comcast in the Middle TN area.
Thanks in advance with any suggestions.
    Djay

I found my "issue" is not an issue when I was able to access WiFi. The touch downloaded my messages! I was naively "assuming" that the initial setup via iTunes would have provided my initial message download.
Marking this "false alarm" as solved. I'll avoid "jumping the gun" on my next hurdle.

  • Issues using new iPod Touch due to OS

    Hello all.
I just got an iPod touch for my birthday, and upon attempting to use it, I was instructed to download and install the newest version of iTunes.
No problem, except I cannot install the newest version of iTunes because it won't run with my current operating system.
So, I went to download updates for my OS and I cannot install the newest versions (my machine tells me that my software is up to date when I try to use the software update tool - it's a big liar).
I am assuming that I cannot install OSX 10.5.whatever because I am currently running Mac OSX 10.3.9!! (Old, I know)
After hunting the apple site, and finally the web, I cannot find a download for 10.4.0 (tiger) and without it I am afraid that I can't continue to update my OS, and therefore I can't even USE my brand new iPod touch.
Help! Please! What do I do?

So, I went to download updates for my OS and I cannot install the newest versions (my machine tells me that my software is up to date when I try to use the software update tool - it's a big liar).
Software Update only shows you free updates.

You can if the computer meets the requirements for it. A previous OS version isn't required for the retail package.

  • My brand-new iPod touch (5th Gen) battery takes a very long time to fully charge, even while not in use. Why is this and what should I do?

Just recently bought a brand-new iPod touch, 5th generation. To be exact, got it two days ago, this past Saturday, on 12/13/2014. Initially, when I first turned it on, it had a fully charge and I didn't need to charge it. I also didn't see anything in the very small and limited start-up guide you receive with it to charge it for a certain amount of time before use, or to use it until the battery dies, then charge all the way, like a lot of electronic devices have you do when you first purchase them.
So I was assuming I didn't need to do anything like that. First question, should I have charged it for a period of time before use? Should I have used it until the battery died, then plugged it in and charged it fully before use? Or is none of this necessary initially and iPod batteries are good to go from the start?
Please excuse me if this is an obvious question, as this is my first ever iPod. Anyways, like I said, nothing in the "instructions" said anything about that, so I didn't do it, I just used it until it got below 20% battery left, then I plugged it in.
Now for the battery itself, it takes literally a day or so to fully charge, even while not in use. Even if I use it for a while, turn off the iPod to make sure it shuts off all background data and apps, and then plug it in to charge, it still charges extremely slowly. I've never seen a device take this long to charge. As for the battery life itself, I'd say at full charge it lasts about 4-5 hrs, maybe 6, and then I have to charge it again. Meanwhile it takes around 24 hours, without me using it, to fully charge. If I use it while its charging, the battery decreases faster than it charges, and eventually I'll get the typical "20% battery remaining" message pop up.
I know it is charging, as the lightning symbol is next to the battery symbol. Specifically, right now, I plugged it in about 1 hr 30 minutes ago, and it has barely gone up. Also, whenever I press the home button to check the battery, I can see it jump down from about 50% to somewhere around 25%-30%. What is that about?
This is really frustrating, and I'm seriously contemplating either taking it back and trying my luck with a different iPod, or just taking it back and getting my money back. Any help and clarification on this matter would be greatly appreciated, and I'll answer any questions I can to shed more light on this.

It will take longer to charge the 5G's battery than either the 3G or 4G's battery.
