Using OBIEE 11g Analytics with VPD database

We are new to the OBIEE world. Our background has been in Discoverer for the past eight years. With Discoverer, the database handled all VPD issues. We simply had users create private database connections and Discoverer Plus would pass the user's credentials to the back end where a VPD policy would attach a predicate to a user's queries.
So I guess our question is, How do we accomplish the same thing in OBIEE 11g for Analytics? We don's see any way to get around the need for a shared connection pool, and we cannot see any way to add a database login screen, nor would we want to.
We are seeing things called initialization blocks and variables in the help files. We are assuming we will have to create some way of capturing the user's ID and passing it to the back end.
We can't be the first ones to face this challenge, so any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Ken

in the connection pool, you can use :USER and :PASSWORD and these will send the OBIEE login to the db, assuming each OBIEE user exists as a db user this should sort you out.
Alternatively, you implement a psuedo-VPD using OBIEE Security filters, assuming you have access to the tables that VPD is using, you can hold the predicates to be applied in variables via INIT blocks and have OBIEE apply them on an as-needed basis. Check security filters in the documentation.

    Hi All,

can anyone help me out in resolving this issue.

    Hi All,
Thank u all for ur replies, but I dint the exact solution for what I'm searching for.
If I use the condition as
"WHERE "Workforce Budget"."Used Budget Amount" BETWEEN MAX("Workforce Budget"."Total Eligible Salaries") AND MAX("Workforce Budget"."Published Worksheet Budget Amount"",
all the data will be grouped with the two columns which I'm considering in the condition.
my actual requirement with this query is to get the required date from a table to generate the report either as daily or weekly or monthly report. If I use repository variables, variables are not getting refreshed until I regenerate the server(which I should not do in my project). Hence I have created a table to hold weekly start and end dates and monthly start and end dates to pass the value to the actual report using between operator.
please could anyone help me on this, my release date is fast approaching.

  • OBIEE 11G: Issue with Agent

I am trying to make agent work in OBIEE 11G together with Active Directory settings but the agent are failling for some users. Some users are not able to send the ibots:
We get the following message with Agent Failed:

Is it in RPD or in Weblogic?

  • OBIEE 11g caching question - cross database joins

Hi, I'm seeing something strange (a.k.a. not wanted) in OBIEE (11g, not sure that version matters).
I have a simple data mart that contains spend information. The supplier dimension contains keys that can be used to join it to detailed supplier information and supplier address information in our ERP system (that sits in a different database / on a different box). In the OBIEE physical layer I've created a cross database join between the supplier dimension table and the ERP tables that contain the address info.
Here's the odd behavior I'm seeing. If I write an answers request to select the supplier, some address info, and total spend for fiscal year 2010, I'm seeing OBIEE fire off two queries (this I expect):
    A) Select supplier, address key, and total spend for fiscal year = 2010 against the spend mart
    B) select address_key and associated address info against the ERP system (no limit on this query, it pulls back all rows from the address table)
OBIEE then does an internal join itself and serves up the results, everything is correct. But here's what's "wrong" - if I then run the exact same answers request, but change the fiscal year to 2009, I again see OBIEE firing off the two queries. What I expected and/or want to see is that, since the entire result set from query #B doesn't change at all, that it wouldn't have to rerun this query. However, it seems to be.
Is there any way to get #B to cache so that, for any subsequent query that contains supplier address info, OBIEE can pull it from cache instead of rerunning the query (which is pretty slow)? I really thought it would do that, but it doesn't seem to be.
    Thanks!
    Scott

    Hi,
Could you give a bit more of context for this case? The table in SQL server; Is it a dimension and the one in Oracle DB is a fact? I am guessing, you have set up the driving table here. Have you given a try taking it off, and let BI Server do the filter in memory?

  • Any one used ADF+BC+JDEV with other databases like MySQL

    Hi
Thank you for reading my post
    i used Jdeveloper 10.1.3.1.0 and OC4J standalone 10.1.3.1.0
it looks like that BC+ADF faces just works fine with ORACLE database because two days i stocked with running JDEV+BC+ADF faces with a mysql or Derby databse.
I tried with both embeded oc4j and i copy the mysql jdbc driver and also derby jdbc driver to
    j2ee/home/lib
    j2ee/home/alib
so there should be no problem as far as i worked with other apps.
then i create a library for each of those drivers in Jdeveloper to be able to create BC from tables.
I create a war deployment profile to be able to deploy the application to StanAlone OC4j
All i get when i tried to run the jsf file with embeded OC4J is like :
    500 Internal Server Error

and all i get when i tried to run it with standalone OC4J is :
    500 Internal Server Error
Servlet error: Security sensitive exception occured. Please consult application log for details. for standalone OC4J i enter the administration console and test the connection pool that IDE created during deployment and it was ok when i test the connection pool / datasource.
so , What is the problem ? can please some one help me on this ?
I tried the same scenario with ORACLE 10G and it works fine.
    so my questions are :
1-does OC4J 10.1.3.1.0 has problem with none oracle databases?
2-does BC that come with Jdev has problem with none oracle database ?
3-am i wrong in one of my steps ?
please some one give me some hints

OK, thanks to Peter Hanusiak, and Oracle Consulting consultant in Slovakia, I have resolved my issue and I'm hoping that the same solution may apply for you. See below for the instructions from Peter that helped me out. Note that since our applications are different, the specific libraries and locations that you need to confirm compatibility for may be different.
    Hope this helps,
    Dave
I had similar problem. And in my case it was caused by different ADF from JDev and SOA Suite and SOA order booking demo.
Because I can't test it now, I'll tell just what I remember.
In SOADEMO is somewhere folder SOADEMO-CLIENT\UserInterface\public_html\WEB-INF\lib
    where you can find
    adf-faces-impl.jar
    jsf-impl.jar
Try to find exactly the same libs in Jdev and copy&paste from Jdev to SOADEMO folder. then find the libs in SOASuite, and copy&paste from Jdev to SOA Suite those libs. Restart SOA Suite. Deploy Soademo-Client. And hopefully it will work.

  • Can't login to obiee 11g analytics

    Hi Guys,
Client has installed obiee 11g in a server sitting at different place. We have deployed our own repository and catalog. Now we can't login to obiee analytics. It does not accept any username or password created in weblogic console. But if we deploy oracle's default SampleSales repository, then we could login. Can't understand what's the problem!
    It's throwing the following error:

    Hi,
This is the exact format how my tnsnames.ora file looks. sorry, I can ping it in command prompt now. In my connection pool i tried first DSN =  ab.bc.xy.zx, did not work. Then I saw oracle's default repository and changed my DSN to your suggested format starting from "DESCRPTION" to rest. Still no luck Do you think, i should put the same TNS in my local machine??

  • OBIEE 11g Issue with "group by"

    Hello,
I have issues with the physical queries generated by OBIEE engine.
All the facts are at detailed granular level. when I query the table, group by clause is excluded from the query. following is the sample query generated by OBIEE 11g engine.
    select 0 as c1,
    D1.c2 as c2,
    D1.c1 as c3,
    D2.c3 as c4,
    D2.c2 as c5,
    D2.c1 as c6
    from
    (select distinct T48494.SMBL as c1,
    T48494.EXP_DT as c2
    from
    VW_CONTRACT_DETAILS T48494
    where ( T48494.EXP_DT in (TO_DATE('2012-09-03 00:00:00' , 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'), TO_DATE('2012-09-19 00:00:00' , 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS')) )
    ) D1,
    (select sum(T48494.TRADED_VOL) as c1,
    sum(T48494.TRADED_VAL) as c2,
    sum(T48494.TOTAL_TRADES) as c3
    from
    VW_CONTRACT_DETAILS T48494
    where ( T48494.EXP_DT in (TO_DATE('2012-09-03 00:00:00' , 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'), TO_DATE('2012-09-19 00:00:00' , 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS')) )
    ) D2
    order by c3, c2
I'm getting similar kind of issues(exclusion of group by from query) even when i query other fact tables as well. Is there any global change to be made?
    Regards,
    Kishore

Does it mean you are expecting a group by on
    D1.c1, D1.c2?
    So query should like
    select 0 as c1,
    D1.c2 as c2,
    D1.c1 as c3,
    D2.c3 as c4,
    D2.c2 as c5,
    D2.c1 as c6
    from
    (select distinct T48494.SMBL as c1,
    T48494.EXP_DT as c2
    from
    VW_CONTRACT_DETAILS T48494
    where ( T48494.EXP_DT in (TO_DATE('2012-09-03 00:00:00' , 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'), TO_DATE('2012-09-19 00:00:00' , 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS')) )
    ) D1,
    (select sum(T48494.TRADED_VOL) as c1,
    sum(T48494.TRADED_VAL) as c2,
    sum(T48494.TOTAL_TRADES) as c3
    from
    VW_CONTRACT_DETAILS T48494
    where ( T48494.EXP_DT in (TO_DATE('2012-09-03 00:00:00' , 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'), TO_DATE('2012-09-19 00:00:00' , 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS')) )
    ) D2
    group by c3, c2 ---> added line
    order by c3, c2

  • OBIEE 11G help with report design

    Hi,
I need to design a report in the following format
    Customer Number:
    Customer Name:
    Customer Address:
    Order Detail:
Line number | Order No | Order description | Order Status
The order detail will have multiple lines, I have to do this in both Excel and PDF, is it possible to do without Publisher, and just OBIEE 11G? If so please help on how to do it?
Thanks for your time and help.

    Hi,
You can have static text or narrative view to achieve the customer details.
And use the table format for the order details.
And give reports links where in, you can download to both excel and pdf.
    Hope this resolves.
    Regards

  • Using OBIEE 11g for 10 minutes...not liking it (at all)...slew of bugs

I don't mean to rant, but I've been a huge supporter of OBIEE 10g for years now. I've finally got 11g installed on my laptop, and I've spent 5 minutes playing with straight forward answers stuff, and I've already hit two or three "showstopper" issues, and 2 or three "really annoying" items:
    1. I go in to Answers (Sample sales), choose "P1 Product" and then go to the Results tab. As expected, I see a list of products. So then I go back to the Criteria tab, and add in "P2 Product Type", "P3 LOB", and "P4 Brand". Navigate back to the Results tab...and it's showing exactly the same 1 column of products as before. Hit the refresh button just in case...and that doesn't help either. Is this a bug? Or is there some magic other than just switching between criteria and results tabs to see the "new" results???
    2. Trying to figure out what SQL is going on in #1, I click on the administration link. But instead of popping up a new window and leaving my original analysis alone, it navigates me to the admin page. When I try to go back to the analysis using back arrow, everything has been erased...so I've lost it. Also, the "Administration" link doesn't allow me to "Open in new browser window". Am I completely insane, or has this functionality been totally ruined?
    3. In the criteria tab, items used to have a filter icon, formula icon, sort icon, etc. directly on their tiles. Now I have to hit the little dropdown and pick from a list. 1) this hides functionality from users, 2) this adds extra mouse clicks and slows things down with little if any apparent benefit. Is there a reason this was done?
    4. In the criteria tab, if I have two dimensions with several attributes, I used to be able to re-sort the dimensions in front of each other by dragging and dropping the dimension name (upper part of tile) instead of each individual dimension attribute. Looks like this completely doesn't work in 11g. Bug?
I'm hoping my experience improves (quickly)...because this is really really poor. To find this much stuff in less than 10 minutes is really disappointing. New functionality might be great...but if I can't even get basic queries to show results properly, this is useless. Can someone please confirm if these are bugs and/or if I'm not doing something right?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Just to update item #1, if I add all four columns at the start in the criteria tab, I can then "remove" any of them and they get removed from the results. But if I go to add them back in, again they are not showing up in the results.
    Two other dumb questions:
    1. Anyone hear info on when 11.1.1.4 will be out?
    2. There are like 30+ patches already on support.oracle.com for 11.1.1.3. Do I have to patch all of them?
    3. Will the patches address the issues I'm seeing?
Thanks, sorry for the rant, quite frustrated.

  • OBIEE 11g - Maps with Google Map as Source

    Hi Experts,
Am trying to create some maps using information from Google Maps as source.
In Map-viewer console, I have added Google Maps as the source in 'Manage Map Tile Layer' and was able to see the base map when I did a 'View Map/Manage Tiles'.
However when I logged into analytics and tried to import layers, am not able to see anything.
Is there anything that I am missing out. Thanks for any pointers.
    - Sujana

Spatial data has to be setup in the database to get layers. I tried using some of the layers from the spatial data I had and then could get a map with google map as the background map.
But couldn't find any easy alternate to fetch layer information.
