Using Prelude to sort and organize a ton of media

So I have about 2 years of old behind the scenes footage (about 1tb) that is spread out through about 40 different folders. I have ingested the whole mess into Prelude, but I am finding it difficult to start the sorting process. What I would like to do is start with general sorting, grab a few clips, copy them, and add them into a new bin, and so on, but I cant go this route. It appears as though I have to create a new rough cut for each catagory and then drop the files in that sequence. This seems like more steps than necessary for doing the beginning stages of sorting. Is Prelude the right choice to sort through masses of old footage, or should I just use Premiere to do it?
To summarize. I need to take thousands of files and separate them into general catagories.

sorry for the late response.  I have found using the label tag in Prelude is the most helpful. Most of my job is logging and sorting one folder with thousands of clips from trips videographers take overseas in to interview, selects and discard folders. Label all your clips (under the basic metadata menu there is a field called "Label") and then sort them into appropriate folders using Bridge (open the folder holding the footage, pick the appropriate label, then drag and drop into the appropriate folder if necessary). That's the way I do it and it's pretty quick, I usually average 25-30 clips an hour (logging, labeling and sorting) including interviews.

    Hello. I've ran into some problems recently with my lightroom files etc.
    I have an external drive that i keep my images on. I have about 24,000 photos on my drive, both ranging from personal, commercial, events, portraints, landscapes and weddings.
    My problem is that it runs so slowly, working isn't really easy with it at all.
    How can I get more organization? I wanted to work on my current projects on my ssd for speed, and then archive them on my external, how can i go about that?
    Is it worth having a catalog for each bunch of photos. i.e one catalog for weddings, one for portraits, one for events etc.
    Any extra pointers/tips on how to better sort everything?

    Folders can contain other folders, albums, slideshows, etc. But albums can only contain photos. If you're trying to drop an album or folder onto an album you won't be able to do so.
    As If you can drag photos to albums then you're not experiencing the Helvetica font issue. If you can't then do as Terence suggested and make sure the Helvetica is activated using Font Book.

    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it.     You open a folder of bookmarks via the right-click context menu > Open All in Tabs.
    "History > Show Al History" and "Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks" now have similar names.<br />
    You may want to check out all menu items to see what they do.
    You can add a few more items (Error Console and the DOM Inspector) to the Tools menu if you enable two devtools prefs, in case you are interested in them.

    Run the Apple hardware test to see what it tells you. Run the extended test when prompted, which can take awhile.

    The command above about creating a group only works for the root site of the site collection, because the scope of the user group is site collection level, these groups
    can be used in all the sites in this site collection.
    With the existing groups in the root site, we can add users into them and grant specific permissions of a specific sub site to these groups.

    I moved to iMac from /windows.  I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 on my Mac and also iPhoto.  Iphoto cam preinstalled on the mac.  I want to use PSE exclusively and not iPhoto.  I don't want to uninstall iPhoto, just want to have PSE set as the default editor and organizer of my photos.  How do I set my system to use PSE?

    1. Don't confuse "Apple ID" with iTunes Account ID.  You can have many Apple IDs but only one iTunes account active at a time.
    2. If you "changed" your iTunes account ID, you actually have 2 accounts - one under the old name plus the new name.
    3. You can't merge the accounts - they remain separate.  Apps purcahsed under the old account name will update ONLY WHEN THE PHONE IS SIGNED IN TO THE OLD ACCOUNT NAME  and visa versa.
    4. Likewise, you can sync only the apps, music, media purchased under the account the phone AND iTunes are signed in to.

    In this case you have to do external sorting insted of defalutsorting provided by dispaly Tag Library. find sample code for External Sorting.

  • TS4036 I am trying to restore my phone using iTunes back up and iCloud back up. Both won't let me do it.  They said that it could not be completed.  What can I do to get my phone restored?

    I had to wipe my phone clean because of storage issues.  It kept saying I didn't have enough storage for pics or apps, but I only had about 75 pics and 1 extra app. So, I backed up my iPhone on icloud and itunes, then cleared off my iphone using the steps in the settings.  Then, when I am going back to restore my iPhone using iTunes back up and iCloud backup, it fails in both locations.  It says it failed to be completed. 
    What now?

    Thank you Terence for your help.  I was able to restore my backup from my time machine ext drive to a new 1tb seagate ext drive.  so i felt sort of ok.  but yesterday that older ext drive i used for time machine wouldn't open! i called applecare and they trouble shooted with me and said it's probably a goner and data is probably corrupted.  it's only a few years old and i'm very careful with it.  my husband accidentally dropped my new drive last night -- i know, unbelievable, i was SO upset, poor guy -- but I'm so stressed with all of this.  i have 10 years of photos and videos.  so now i only have the one newer drive with a backup.  i have to buy another one today to backup again so i at least have two backups.  i tried to delete a ton of files last night to free up the 30 gb of space i need to get my full library back on my mac. i have 90gb free and deleted 7 years worth of photos i had on picasa that were in my "pictures" folder and also a ton or random photos and videos i had in that same pictures folder and thought that would give me the 30 gb but it hardly freed up any space at all!  do you know why that is?  all of this stuff is really a pain and really stressful.  thank god i did have a backup in the first place but now i am panicked the one i have left will somehow crash.  especially after my husband dropped the drive lastnight! it didn't fall far and fell onto a wood floor and seems fine, but after my older ext drive crashed yesterday -- and i lost my entire iphoto library a fewweeks ago off my mac -- i feel cursed.  any answers you have would be great. thank you.

    I'm really confused by this subscription pricing. If I purchase the $9.99/month, do I get the full desktop app of Photoshop and Lightroom? But I see on this page Products they list something called Photoshop CC that costs twice as much. How is that different from the Creative Cloud Photography?
    My main question is whether I can use photoshop text styles and photoshop actions with Creative Cloud Photography, since I just purchased a bundle that includes these and I want to be able to use them. But I'd also like to understand what comes with all of the various products and how they are different.
    My other question is how is Lightroom different from Photoshop? I have a sense of what you can do in Photoshop but I don't know much about Lightroom at all.
    One more question: the free trial -- is it limited in any way besides the time length? If I do that, will I get a clear idea of all that I will be able to do once I subscribe, or are the functions limited in the trial?

    What Adobe Bridge does:
    Bridge is the coordinating hub of the Creative Suite. Synchronizing color management settings for all suite programs is done from Bridge, and can only be done from Bridge, to take one important use.
    Bridge displays actual thumbnails of many more file types than Finder or Explorer. It also allows instant play of sound or video files more readily than the native OS file managers.
    Bridge allows direct access to file metadata, to embed copyright information  and keywords where appropriate (e.g., for corporate logo vector and raster files). It also displays the fonts used in an InDesign file, the swatches in an INDD or AI and the output plates (including spot color plates) they use.
    When managing the assets for a design project, Bridge allows quick and simple sorting, rating and custom labeling (with color flash indications) of assets. I can rate images according to whether they are rejects, possibles, for review by client, or approved. The filters built into Bridge allow instant isolation of only the approved images or designs in a folder, only the rejects (for deletion) or only files with certain ratings, no matter how many files it contains. It recognizes aspect ratios, so if I only need a landscape or a 16:9 image in a folder of hundreds of images, I turn off the aspect ratios I don't need.
    Once filtered, the remaining visible files can be selected and copied, moved, or deleted without affecting the rest of the contents of a folder.
    Collections are a massively useful feature. One of my clients is a performing arts center, and in a season we turn out dozens of ads, flyers, brochures, web banners, playbills, billboards and other collateral using the same assets over and over. These assets are organized by artist and/or show on disk, but I set up each season's repeating assets as a Collection in Bridge, so that I just have to open the collection and drag and drop these assets into new INDD, AI, PSD, HTML (in Dreamweaver), FLA or AE projects without having to navigate from folder to folder picking up individual files.
    Bridge's Favorites is another place I stack frequently-accessed folders, such as stock photography, backgrounds, and top-level folders for active projects.
    Assets can be divided into subfolders, but a quick toggle of "Show items from subfolders" exposes all of the assets in a single view while maintaining their organization. I will typically keep AIs, PSDs, EPSs, stock photography and client images in separate subfolders within a project. When I'm ready to start pulling assets into an InDesign layout, I toggle this on and simply drag what I need into the layout.
    Bridge comes with Adobe Camera Raw built in, which is many times faster than using Photoshop to adjust jpegs or tiffs for things like tonal range, white balance, cropping, spotting and sharpening, and is non-destructive.
    One tremendously useful Bridge function for InDesign CS5+ users is the "Show linked files" feature, which opens all the linked files in a layout into a single view, regardless of where they are physically located. I often use this when doing alternative layouts from a client-approved mockup for a campaign, to be certain the same assets are used in each piece, or when creating a motion graphic or interactive piece for the campaign in After Effects or Flash.
    The batch and image processing scripts built into Bridge automate things like creating web-ready small jpegs from multiple images, renaming large numbers of files in place or by copying to an alternative location, creating sets of PSD, png, jpeg or other file types from an assortment of image files, and so on.
    Bridge is so much a part of my daily workflow that on my main workstation I have one monitor dedicated to it almost 100%. Bridge just sits open 24/7, ready for use. I would run at half speed without it, no question.

    I am trying to follow your very precise steps, and in my case (PSE11 also, Win7), the focus stays on the edited picture after I return from the editor to the Organizer. I am pretty sure that in the previous post describing your situation, I was able to reproduce the problem, but I don't remember on which version. I just tried in 'Folders' view mode to edit in a selected folder, then I clicked 'All media' so that no folder was selected. Same result in both cases.
    Even if you prefer to work in folders view, you could take advantage of the ability to use 'albums'. It's a misleading word to describe a selection, a 'collection' of pictures, which you can sort as you want. It's a kind of  'playlist' like with music items. In the organizer, you can select a folder and create an album (even a temporary one) just by choosing 'create instant album'. Suppose you have made an album from a folder or a selection of highlighted pictures to edit. You can order them in date order, import batch or 'custom' order'. Since PSE12 you can also sort them in filename order. You should never lose the 'focus' on your last edited picture when coming back from the editor to the organizer. If the purpose of that album is only to help in organizing an editing session, you simply delete the album (the playlist) if you don't want to keep the list afterward.
    I hope someone will be able to confirm how that can happen...

  • Modelling Individuals and Organizations

    I'm developing an application where a user can either act as an individual, or as a member of an organization, and I'm having some trouble modelling this so support the various systems.
    To explain the rules, users log in and peform actions, but these actions may be in their own name, or performed on behalf of their organization. An individual can only peform the former, while a member of an organization can act on their own behalf or on behalf of their organization. A user can only be a member of a single organization.
    And to clarify, an organization is a different beast than an individual. Primarily because it isn't a different type of individual, but instead a collection of individuals that operates as an independent identity in the system. It also supports a range of member-management functionality (payroll, for example) because of that. While it doesn't do anything itself, since it's members perform actions for it, it is the organization that is considered to have performed the action when the dust settles.
    So now much of the objects within the system can have a parent that is either an individual or an organization, and several UI screens apply to both scenarios equally, with very minor differences (sometimes with no difference at all).
    This leads to a host of implementation details. Let's say both individuals and organizations can buy widgets as one of many actions they both share. Now we must support the concept of widgets belonging to either an individual or an organization. Business logic must be able to handle both scenarios, ideally with minimal duplication, and persistence has to take into account that the parent relationship of widgets isn't bound to a single type, but one of two (individuals or orgs). Most of the systems in the application must deal with this issue.
    I know this is a very abstract question, but I'm at an abstract phase of the design. Has anyone dealt with this type of model, and what techniques have been used to architect it?

    Individuals and Organizations. True enough. I already have an object representing the relationship and attributes related to it (date, role, etc).
    Can be complex. I've seen it done badly.
    I don't think Party is necessarily trivial, even
    if the idea is simple.Certainly isn't trivial. All sorts of new issues arrise. For example, with the proposed table layout, Parties, Individuals, and Organizations all have different ID's, and that needs to be reconciled.
    Situations arise where your working with a system that references Parties, but you want to access more detailed information about the Person or Organization, perhaps for display purposes. Now you have to figure out how to get the derived type with just a Party ID. Doable, but I'd prefer to avoid a blind search through the Person and Organization tables.
    What if the Party table referenced the sub-type? Perhaps a column that maps to an enum in code such as PartyType.Person and PartyType.Organization. Mappers like Hibernate could use this information to automatically create an object of the derived type when you load a Party.
    Anyone know of any open-source Java or .NET projects that solve these problems? I'd love to see code.
