Using Recovery media from an identical computer?

I don't have access to my original recovery media. Am I able to perform a factory restore using recovery media created on an identical HP Pavillion DV6-4023TX?
thanks

Hi,
I know for sure: using OS installation CD/DVD and the key at the bottom of the machine should NOT be a problem but I have not tried to use Recovery media from other machine(s). I think this won't work because the hardware signature otherwise people can clone easily. Yes, please post back the result.
Good luck.

  • Problem Using Recovery Media

    Hello all,
I have a Satellite L775 that's given me a major headache. To provide some background:
A few weeks back as I'm surfing the internet, I hear a clicking soundcoming from the area around the hardrive. Then the PC starts to chug, before finally shutting off. I was given the error 0xc00000e9. So, I got to Best Buy and buy a new Western Digital hard drive, and order the recovery media from Toshiba.
I insert the first disk, and it starts to copy files for a minute or so before giving me a new error: 0A-0543-0000. Does this indicate a defective recovery disk, or a defective brand new HDD? I just want my laptop back!

I came accross your message while trying to find a solution to my own problems. However I have a bit of an answer for you.
The RAM chips are actually very easily accesssible to the average user. I don't know if they are the problem or not, but if you can afford to have it tested, it's a start towards troubleshooting your problem.
Flip your laptop over so you can see the bottom. You will see two or three 'cutouts,' one of them being the battery. One of them will hide the harddrive, and probably is elongated to also hide the memory chips. This panel is usually held in with a single screw, and snap-in clips. Use a small phillips head screw driver and remove the screw. Then, using your nails or another flat tool gently lift the panel. It may put up some resistance, but should come off without much issue.
The harddrive will be a flat wide and long box, and the memory chips will look like a computer chip. It/they should be held in by clips on the sides. These are easily removed by pushing the locking clips outward and lifting the memory chip out and up. You may not be able to see any obvious problems on the surface, so testing the chip will need to be done by a professional. However, if there are more than one, of you have (or bought) a replacement, swapping the old chip for a new one is the simplest way to see if that is the issue.
I hope that this helps some. Please note that you may not be able to return the RAM chip after you've opened it's packaging, let alone installed it. I would recommend taking it to a local computer repair store and asking them about your errors. Most employees at small shops are very computer savvy and often willing to offer advice to potential customers. Ask them about your issues. They will likely suggest you bring it to them for repairs, and that is at your descretion.
Good luck, and I hope this helps some.

  • Re-Installing Windows 7 Using Recovery Media (DVD's)

    Notebook: HP-430 Notebook
    OS: Windows 7 (64-bit)
    HDD: 298 GB
When i newly bought my HP-430 notebook, I re-partitioned HDD using some other third party software.I created one additional partition (M:\). Here is the info, of how i had repartitioned....
    C:\  - 100GB (changed from 284 GB to 100 GB).
D:\  - Did not make any changes.
M:\  - 184 GB (Created a drive by my self).
Then after some days for testing purpose i thought of using recovery manager. So i run the setup and chose the First option (System Restore) which said that it will only reformat the system drive (C:\), and will not perform any other HDD changes. But to my surprise it deleted/reformated the full HDD, and i lost all my documents, music, photos, and all my important files, which i had stored/backed up on M:\ (which i had created)....
Can some one tell me why the hack this happened.....????
Then now, next point. After recovery manager had restored the OS, i again repartitioned it, But this time with Windows Disk Management Tool. But Windows Disk Management didnt allow me to shrink(resize) the C:\(Systemdrive) less than 150 GB. So i resized C:\ to 150 GB from 284 GB, and created one more drive (M:\) of size 147 GB. And i deleted the Recovery Drive (D:\), but i have created the Recovery DVD's before deleting Recoevery Drive from my HDD.
Again now its time for me to reinstall Windows 7 using Recovery media, as i have messed up with some system files while installing a theme for Windows 7, and now my OS is completely unstable. So now i want to reinstall windows 7, but I cant understand which option to chose in recovery manager (when run from Recovery DVD's)
    Options shown in recovery manager
    1. Recover using Microsoft Recovery
    2. System Recovery (The option which i had chosen for the first time and got all my stuff deleted)....it says it only reinstalls the OS and wont perform any other HDD changes.
    3. Minimised Image Recovery
    4.Factory Reset.
So now my question to you guys is that.......which option do i chose in recovery manager so that all my backed up content and my stuff on M:\ (which i created) wont be deleted..and the OS will be reinstalled.....
    PLIZZZZZ HELPPPPPPPPPPPP.........................

    Hi,
I don't believe that any of the recovery options from the Disc will retain your custom partition - As far as I know, the only time you will get a prompt to keep a custom partition is when using the 'Minimized Image Recovery' option from the Recovery Partition D which you have removed.
You could try the following work-around.
Download the correct Windows 7 Disc Image from the link below - this must be exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the version you would need to download.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.
Use the disc you create to perform the installation - when you get to the option to choose the type of installation, choose Custom and select the C partition.
When asked, enter the Windows activation key found on the underside of your notebook, then when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

  • Recover Windows 7 with Recovery Media from WXP

Created a Recovery Media from a preinstalled ThinkCentre (M58p) Windows 7. Stored on DVD including WINR.WIM total size 257 Mb. Installed Windows XP using Lenovo RnR DVD's. So far no problem.
Now wanting to know how I can recover the factory W7. Used the Recovery Media W7, Windows starts Product Recovery, selected method 'Restore to factory default state'.
Wizard asks for Product Recovery Disc 1.
I created the Recovery Media in assumption having the opportunity to restore the factory Windows 7.
Do I need the recovery disks of Lenovo for this? Does the Recovery Media only work in combination with W7 OS?
F11 starts RnR for the WXP. The recovery partition of W7 seems to be deleted by the recovery of WXP.
In the past (pre-ThinkVantage-period) I used Ghost for the original factory OS's, did work nicely.
    Solved!

    Hi,
    welcome to the forum.
Ok, so let's start from the scratch. What you have created while the Win7 was instaled was not an "image" nor a backup of your system. That was just a bootable "Rescue" disc, so that in case you cannot boot up into OS, you can boot from this CD and this will give you some options to save your date, etc.
Unfortunately on your protection I have to tell, that it is a bit harder to differ the two buttons, where one says "Create Rescue and Recovery disc" and the second one "Create recovery media". The one will create a disk, like you have. The second one will create you a new set of recovery CDs, that you could use for the restore of your system.
So in this situation, where also the original RnR Win7 partition is gone, Is the only chance to get back to Win7, to call support and ask for the Recovery CDs.
Let me know, if this post helps you. a bit.
Also feel free to asky any add question.  I'll be happy to answer them if I know the correct answer
    Cheers

  • How to create W7 recovery media from retail Windows 8

I installed retail W8 on my new X230T upon purchase.
Q drive is preserved, however I cannot find a way to create recovery media from it.
    Any suggestions?

I'm not sure you can, bitlocker ties your installation to the hardware.

  • USB recovery media from Toshiba for Windows 7 doesn´t work

    Hi,
Recently as my laptop Potégé was slow I reinstalled Windows without using Toshiba recovery disks. Now I can't activate Windows 7 (64 bits), so I ordered a USB recovery media from Toshiba. I tried to use it but it doesn't work. I turn off the laptop, turn it on again pressing F12, -with the USB plugged to the laptop- and when I press HDD recovery, the system just takes me to Windows as usual, without reinstalling. Any thoughts on how to reinstall?
    Solved!

    Hi,
Are you getting a boot option menu when you press f12?  Have you tried going into BIOS to check your boot order?  Usually f2 or DEL will get you to BIOS, or at the bottom of the boot option menu (which I assume is f12).  Once you are in BIOS, check that your USB drive is above the others in the boot order and save your configuration and reboot.  If you are still having a problem, you might check to see how many USB devices you have plugged in, or chained, and remove the ones that are not necessary because they could interfere with booting to your USB drive.  If you are using a USB hub, you might try putting the usb key into a different slot to give it priority over the other USB devices on boot up.  The highest priority slot on a USB hub might be the one closest to the USB cable that plugs in to your laptop's USB port.

  • Using Recovery Media on External DVD Drive

Now that I know my internal dvd drive is fried, can I use my recovery media utilizing my external dvd drive?
    I have a x205 9800 running Windows 7.
I put the recovery media in the external dvd drive and it still wants to run it from the internal.
I have disabled my internal "mat**bleep**a dvd ram uj-850s".  No luck.
Any help would be deeply appreciated.

    Hi Tamkhai,
The USB dvd drive is plugged into my laptop.  I am able to get into the boot up area with F12, but it will only allow me to change the order.  I put the USB to the top of the list.  I restart the computer and it brings up the Toshiba Recovery window.  I select OK.  It says "Insert Disc 1."  I insert disc 1 into the external and then it tries to utilize the internal dvd drive.  Even if I disable it or uninstall the dvd drive it still wants to go directly to it.

Your XP CD should be fine.
This will allow you to "build" a bootable device to start your computer with a "windows like" interface.
At that point, the purpose is not to install anything but to allow you to check if you disk is in a good shape (mostly partition table) and, if so, give you access to your files and back them up!
Regarding your vista installation, there is no chance you have an original vistal installation disk as the only option is to create recovery disks for that purpose as soon as you can...
About installing XP on your machine, that might be tricky as some drivers are not included in the XP boot sequence on the CD specially SATA drivers (at that time, most disk where IDE not SATA...) and your HDD might just be invisible to the installer.
If you really want to install XP instead of vista (smart move in my opinion) you may need to build a customized XP installation disk including SATA drivers.

  • Create Recovery Media from Recovery Partition

I'm trying to help my sister fix her laptop, it's a HP Pavillion DM3. The hard drive has developed a physical fault which is preventing it from booting into Windows, however the Recovery partition appears to be undamaged.
What I would like to do is replace the hard drive with a new one, and restore it using the recovery partition from the old hard drive. Is there any way I can do one of the following:
    1. Create recovery media when booting into recovery manager/the recovery partition?
    2. Copy the hidden contents of the Recovery folder on this partition (when connecting the drive to another computer), so I can copy the recovery partition to a new physical disk?
    Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

    MattGoldman,
When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of your computer, inside the battery compartment or on the startup BIOS screen. Please DO NOT include your serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
Neither the methods you have described nor the procedures that have been provided will work. While, it possible that "D:\" HP Recovery partition is fully intact it is more likely that it isn't. The only way I think you may be able to recover the system at this moment is to purchase a new hard drive of like size and capacity as the failing drive, and "clone" the entire old drive to the new drive. This will / may require two USB 2.5" external drive enclosures and a working computer to accomplish.
After the drive is "cloned", place the new drive in the HP laptop computer and see if it boots. If it boots, immediately create the HP Recovery Media. If it doesn't boot, try setting the "D:\" HP Recovery partition as active using a drive partitioning utility. If this boots, it should start the HP Recovery process and return the computer to a factory like state.
If none of the above works, please contact official HP Customer Support in your region / country, via the HP Worldwide Support Portal, to see if HP Recovery Discs are available.

  • P2PP Boot Check Failed - Pavilion dv6t-7000 Quad Edition (Windows 7) using Recovery Media

Hello, My name is Brandon Giesel and I have an HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 Quad Edition laptop. I've been using Windows 7 recovery media (part # 689366-002) to attempt to restore my computer back to factory defaults. I run the recovery dvds as instructed with disc 1, disc 2, disc 3, and application and driver recovery dvd. I've tried reseting the bios back to setup defaults to be safe and I use the boot device options to select the built-in dvd/cd-rom drive. I've also installed a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium using the box set dvd I have laying around home and it installed no problem and boots to the desktop, but ofcourse doesn't have all the necessary drivers and hp software. I did this to confirm that hardware works properly. The computer also passes the start-up test. Memory and Hard Drive passed the test. The recovery seems to go through without a hitch until I hit the end and I get an error message that I believe is pointing to the network controller not functioning correctly. Error message down below... I used the same recovery media that I've used successfully in the past and tried 3 different sets of recovery media all with matching part numbers with no success. I also tried installing Windows using a MS box installation disc and installed the Realtec Ethernet Controller driver thinking that if I got the ethernet driver installed before doing the recovery that it would allow the recovery to go through successfully, but that didn't work either. Do you guys or gals have any ideas or suggestions on possible fixes? I'm open to advanced solutions. I've gone through Microsoft Windows 8.1 MCSA certification training, but this one has me absolutely stumped.  Serial #: 2CE31510V5Product #: A5F76AVBios Version: F.0AProcessor Type: Intel Core i7-3610QM @ 2.3GHz Originally shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit  Error message: Recovery Manager: "The recovery attempt has failed. You're very welcome.
What you do to alleviate the issue is up to you, like I said.
I could think of more draconian methods to dim the lights.
You can get some black nail polish, or black enamel car paint in one of those small bottles, and paint over them if you want.
You can figure out a way to break them.
They are not designed to be turned off or dimmed with software or settings.

  • HT1351 Using OverDrive Media from my library I can't transfer audiobooks to my ipod classic

Can anyone tell me how to configure my ipod Classic so I can transfer audiobooks from the library using OverDrive Media.  These particular books are labeled "ipod compatible" but when I try to transfer, after downloading to my computer, I get an error message saying they can't be transferred to my ipod.  I selected the option on my ipod to manually manage something which I know requires that I eject my ipod before disconnecting it from the computer.  Any other help?

What format are these audiobook tracks in? If it's the WAV format it will not work with the iPod Classic. You'll want to use the MP3 version instead from OverDrive.

  • Equium L300 - Can I use Recovery CD from a other Toshiba notebook?

    Hi,
    I can't get a computer to load Vista (Equium l300 I think).
Ubuntu loads just fine (I have an 8GB linux partition, with GRUB installed in a separate partition), but when I try to load vista I get "Starting..." and nothing happens.
I tried HDDRecovery pressing '0' or 'F8', but that gave me a disk check for errors and nothing more.
I still have a backup from HDD recovery in another partition, but I don't know where to place it, can you tell me where?
Then I found out I have a toshiba recovery disc from my wife's Satellite.
Can I use it to recover the Equium or will it erase it's genuine Vista installation putting a new 'pirated' copy in it's place?
If I can't, can somebody tell me where to place the backed up HDDRecovery image folder?

Thank you Horwath, but I was not attacking Toshiba in any way whatsoever, since that will not solve my problem nor spare my time. But now I feel like the prevailing attitude in this forum is becoming an issue worth commenting.
Saying +You should have done this and you should have done that+ is even worse than RT#M, because RT#M usually applies to something that +can still be done+, while telling me I *should* have made a copy before is something I *already know* and does not apply to the present situation. Also, just keeping a recovery medium is not enough since home burnt CD's often peel with time (at least in hot wet climate areas they do). So asking how to safely edit the partition table without affecting the recovery partition is very pertinent question in a forum such as this one.
The problem is when I do thoroughly RT#M, and instead of telling me how to keep the recovery partition safe from damage, the manual just tells me not to edit the partitions at all. Even worse, it tells me not to edit the partition table in a manner not recommended by the user's guide even though *there is no recommendation about partition tables in the user's guide to start with*.
When the manual doesn't give me all the information I need --- And as Horwath correctly implied, they never will because they shouldn't --- I turn to user fora. Now the real problem begins when all I can get from the user forum are the very same legal disclaimers I find in the manual. In no other user-to-user forum I get that kind of attitude.
Actually, this doesn't look like a user to user forum at all!
I *don't* want to blame Toshiba for it. Toshiba products are great, and I have two Toshibas at home because I recommended them to my closest relatives and in laws. As soon as my 5 year old Dell starts aging (and it still hasn't), I will think of buying a Satellite for myself and I will create a recovery disc. *But that's just not what I have at hand now*.
What's missing is just a clearer and more objective communication. And by objective I don't mean +click here and buy a new recovery CD+.

I am trying to download videos to my i-pod using a new computer. How do I get them without losing media that I purchased on my old computer? I have used the i-tunes on this computer only for burning music to CDs.

Restore it from a backup, or transfer it from the old computer, or use these instructions to redownload it through the iCloud if doing so is free in your country.

  • Ordering Recovery media from Europe, for US model.

I brought a second-hand Satellite from US while on a business trip but I live in Europe. HDD crashed now I need to order recovery media because it has none. The problem is that the US site only accepts an American address (shipping and billing both) and the European Toshiba Recovery media ordering site doesn't accept my Satellite because it's foreign. What would you do?

    What would you do?
I would have an acquaintance in the US purchase and reship it.
