Using too much data very quickly

This month my phone provider advised me that I'd nearly used up all my data in 5 days. I really don't know why. Could it be an app called pic college?

Go to your cell provider's account and look for data tranfer history log to see at what time big data transfers are happening and cross reference it to your actual app usage and off-WiFi activity. That can get you started with finding a root cause.

  • Suddenly using too much data?

    Hi everyone,
I have had my iphone 5 for over a year. For the first couple of months I had problems with using too much data but eventually learned it was my email causing the issues (it was updating automatically). Fast forward this past Christmas. I got an iPad 2, and ONLY use it at home when it's connected to WiFi. To be completely honest, I am not even 100% sure if it supports cellular data at all, although I don't believe it does as there's nothing mentioned of cell data in Settings. Now for the past 2 months, I have been using too much data and having to pay extra on our cell bill and I have no idea what has changed besides updating the iPad and my phone (I just updated my phone a couple days ago) to iOS 7.0.6. The charges aren't enormous or anything, I think it was around $8 extra last month but still, I don't know what has changed. I have already gotten a text from my provider (Telus - Canadian company) today saying that I am now paying for my data usage, because we (my husband and I combined) have used our data alotment for the month. I know the problem is my phone because I used about double the amount of data as he did on our last bill. I tried calling my provider, but I was on hold for ages so I will give it another go tomorrow if I can't get something figured out in the meantime.
So my questions are: 1) Could it be the iPad using data? I do have it set so that it backs up to iCloud when plugged in (I believe, my sister in law set it up for me), and it syncs my photos from iphone to the ipad. As you can probably tell, I am just slightly technologically illiterate here. I also did get a new keyboard case for it last month that uses bluetooth.
    2) If it's not the ipad, any ideas of where the data could be going? I use my phone mainly for texts and calls, Facebook, email, some internet browsing, but it is set to WiFi. I mostly use it at home where there is a WiFi connection. Although my young kids do play Angry Birds and watch some videos when we are driving. I don't believe the amount of games they play and videos they watch have changed though, that has been an ongoing thing.
Thanks for any advice, I would like to nip this in the bud before something gets out of control.

Update: I got my bill today, and as suspected I have used way more than half of our shared data plan (which is 1GB - I used 1760Mb). I have had my cellular data either completely turned off, OR turned on but not allow any apps to use it (I noticed that I was having some issues with not being able to send/receive texts if my data was compeltely turned off... Not sure why, but that's another post I guess)  since I started this post. I called Telus and she wasn't able to tell me where any of my data was going, she just kept saying "well you've only spend $3.69 in data for last month" and asked me if I was completely closing out apps, which I do every other day or so. She just recommended that I download an app called My Data Manager to set a limit on how much cellular data I am using, however the app doesn't tell me WHERE the data is going which is my concern. So I'm kind of back at square one. I'm not sure if I should allow my kids to play their games and do as I normally do on the phone until the data gets racked up and then I can try to figure out where it's going, or what. My billing cycle started on March 18 and since then I have used 1MB (approx.) of data, but I was in the US for 4 of those days and had the data turned off completely, so again not sure where that 1MB went. One thing I have started doing that is new, is playing downloaded music (music that I have on iTunes, and put onto my phone) in the car. I thought since it is music that I have put onto the phone (not streaming music) it wouldn't be using any data, but on March 19 (the day before we left for the US), I was playing music in the car with my data turned off, and when a song ended and I tried to play another one it said that the cellular data was turned off and I needed to turn it on. I didn't turn it on, but I did put the phone into airplane mode and was able to play my music that way. Could that be using cellular data? If so, then I know where it has been going!

  • My iphone5 using too much data

ANyone know why im using so much data on my iphone 5 ive never down loaded music films or any thing and used up 1gb in 17days

Your probably using alot of facebook and twitter and the internet. All use alot of data. The Iphone 5 just uses data for everything either use WIFI whenever you can or upgrade your phone plan to the most data possible. Make sure you close down the apps too when your not using them. Sneaky phone services probably charge you for that.

  • Applications are using too much data

my iphone 5 fatching too much data on every application like facebook , whats app etc...

Thanks for sharing.  I'll share something with you.  My Sony TV has a great picture.

  • IPad Air using too much data

I recently purchased an IPad air for my wife for Christmas.  We live in a remote area with no high speed internet.  We use an AT&T 4G hotspot for our internet access.  We subscribe to a 5gb per month plan.  Prior to Christmnas my wife had an older IPad.  We rarely went over the 5gb plan.  Ever since Christmas we have exceeded 12gb.  She doesnt watch movies on the ipad, she rarely goes on the internet either.  99% of the time she is on Facebook, Candy Crush or words with friends.  I installed a data monitoring app on her ipad, but it only tells me how much data she is burning, but not how much data each individual app is burning.  I found an App for my Iphone that does track this, but they do not make it for the iPad.  Anyway, I have tracked my wifes usuage and in one day just playing those games she is burning 250mb+ per day.  We never had this problem on her older Ipad.  What is going on?

That is a great arrangement fo your house, but makes it hard to troubleshoot!  If the pad thinks it is on wifi, then it will not hesitate to update stuff etc.  But that still is a ton of data.
Using the hot spot, do you have the any ability to monitor your usage anywhere near real time.  My experience with AT&T data reporting is that it lags by a day or two - to the point that trying to pin down a culprit just wont work well.
So you may be left back to trial and error -
    1. system updates are usually big.  If you got the thing new at x mas you had the initial load, 10s7, 10s7.1 and ios7.1.1
    2.     webpages with a lot of graphics can be big.  (turn on restrictions, and limit the time she can surf.  while you sleep on the couch...)
    3.     subscriptions?  that auto update daily?
    4.     photo stream?
    i cloud backups?
    5.     streaming music while she surfs?
Probably the best solution is simply to move to an area where you can get decent broadband.  /s
I guess, use your data monitoring app - no candy crush on Monday, no facebook on tuesday, etc, and see if you can nail it down.
There is an app I have called 'system'.  I am not sure if it was free or paid, but there are some tools burined in there.  On the overview page there is a data in and out (wifi) since last boot.  You can use that daily, or even task specific, and track what your daily or app based usage is.  Would take some work, but it would work.

  • My iphone 6 is using too much data from provider

i bought the new iphone 6, all was ok but my internet use has increased. I used to have 1GB data from my provider but due to excesive use of data i had to buy 3GB but that is not enough. I read that this problem is from iphone release, anybody can help me to fix this problem? thanks.

It is not a problem with any iPhone release. It is a problem with one or more apps you have installed that are using data. You can determine which app it is by going to Settings/Cellular, where you can see how much data each app has used.

  • IPhone 6 plus using too much data

I recently switched from T-Mobile to AT&T because everyone says it is "BETTER" i purchased the iphone 6 plus and got the 30gb family plan with 5 phone i am the one the uses the most data everyone else doesnt even use 1GB but i still got the 30 for me. For some reason my phone seems to use more than 1GB a day! When i was with T-Mobile in a month i would probaly use 17GB in a month and now at this rate i will go over my 30GB in less than a month. I have WIFI at home but when i had T-Mobile i would never even connect to it and now with AT&T everytime im home i use it and i still manage to use more than 1GB a day what is going on can someone help me?! Is this an AT&T problem or Apple?

This does not happen on the iphone 4s that is on our contract. It has only started happening with the iphone 6. My daughter spent the whole day on wifi and we got a 1 G message. I am getting fed up. Their apps are set to only use during wifi. I am ready to drop ATT
Keep in mind that the iPhone 4s screen is much smaller, so when your daughter watches any videos it downloads SD or possibly only the much smaller HD resolution videos, but the iPhone 6 has a much larger screen and will automatically download the much larger HD videos.  This means that just replacing the phone can increase her data usage from 200-300MB per hour of vdeo watched to over 1GB of data per hour of video watched.  That is a huge difference, and it is data that is really used, even though it doesn't seem like she's doing anythign differently than before.
Also, if her iPhone was not plugged into external power the whole day, it wold turn off the wifi radio and her phone would revert to using cellular data in amny cases.  This is an Apple "game" they play in order to make their battery life numbers look bigger.  This one bites many kids as they want to stream their music all day long, but then the phone puts the svreen to sleep and turns off the wifi and they now start sucking up cellular data using that large LTE straw.

  • Started using TOO much data with iPhone 4.  Was using less then 200mg a month now using over 500 ...?

I was using less than 200mg a month.  On WiFi alot.  I updates some apps (like 30) and started using 500+ per month.  ATT no help.

I looked around for more answers, found that people were having issues with iCloud updating during the middle of the night using the cellular 3g not wifi. I've turned off my cellular at home so it will only use wifi, and turn it back on only when I need it.  I've also turned off the backup in icloud and will see how that goes. I also was told by an ATT&T support person to download an app called Onavo Count that will keep track of which apps are using the most data. Hope this helps.

  • (5) carrier sent me a text when I was overseas that said I had used too much data so they were turning it off for a bit, I have been home for three weeks now and we called them and they said that they weren't stopping it from turning on, how do I fix it?

How would I be able to fix this? I know that it's not my carrier anymore, is there something in settings or do I have to go to the Apple Store?

Your carrier is wrong.  I know for a fact, because we've had iphone user who have gone abroad and went over their limit, and AT&T disable their service.  When they returned to the state, I had to reactivate their serivce for them.
so call your carrier back and have them reactivate your service.

  • Since upgrading my phone to 6.0.1, I'm using way too much data. I believe it's the podcast app that's not loading shows while I'm connected to wifi. I have the 3g turned off for podcasts??? also after a phone call or an alert it starts playing a podcast?

I've also had the same issues, after upgrading to IOS 6.0, the apps in my iPhone 4 were crashing and the battery life run out very fast.
The only solution worked for me was to remove all mail accounts (Exchange/Gmail) from my iPhone (in settings) and then add them back.
The crashing were stopped! also the battery was back to normal.
I found the solution by first looking at the crash logs (in IOS 6). you can find them at Settings -> General -> About (at the bottom of the About menu you will find the option that opens the logs).
There i saw many logs about Low Memory crash. 99% of the logs were pointed that the largest process (use the most memory) during the crashes is "dataaccessd".
I search in the web and found that this process is a deamon process that reponsible the Mail accounts (like Exchange/Gmail) and contancts list.
I've installed the app "System Status - activity monitor" which shows important system info like CPU usage, Memory usage and running processes.
Before apply my solution (deleting the mail accounts) i saw that the CPU usage was very high which consume the battery very fast. Also i saw that the memory (RAM) was run out.. which probably what cause the crashing..
After deleting the mail accounts (at Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars) i check again with the System Status app, and saw that the memory and CPU were back to normal.
Adding the mail accounts back, still everything work ok
Hope this solution will help you too,
    Enjoy!

My I-Phone 4 is using too much memory.  It shows Apps at 1.44 and Data & Documents at 1.68, not to mention "other" using up more memory.  I have tried eliminating apps but nothing changes.  How does one get rid of some of this "stuff" that is using up so much memory??

I can't get the ringtones i want for my contacts.I got it on my free upgrade but i want to take it back and get something else but where i got it they say i can't because i don't have the earbuds and i have serches or them. now i am suck with a phone i don't like at all until my next upgrade. this is very dishearten

    1. If you are this unhappy with that phone, and the lost earbuds is the only thing stopping you from taking it back, why do not just buy some earbuds. That way you can get rid of that phone. It all depend upon how much you want to get rid of that phone.
    2. Yet if you are stuck with that iPhone, here is something might help you to control the data usage. By design, iPhones do turn off WiFi when they go dormant. So if a download is in progress and so forth when the phone goes dormant, it will switch to use cellular data, if this setting is left on. Therefore, from multi-sources I have learned that if you keep your iPhone connected to a power source, then it will stay connected to the available WiFi.

  • To upload photos from my pc onto my ipad using a usb stick. I bought a camera connector kit and tried placing the usb stick onto one of the white square adaptors, stuck it into the ipad2 and I got 'the device uses too much power'' message. Pls help.

I am not very familiar with the ipad2. I wished to transfer some photos from my pc (not an apple pc but that is the only one I have) to my ipad2 as I thought it would be easier to cull them, edit, crop etc to create albums for our recent trip (the photos are already on the pc and no longer on the camera memory card). When I place the usb stick on the adaptor and stick it onto the Ipad2 I keep getting 'device uses too much power/ requires too much power' message. I read somewhere on the internet that a usb hub could be used to solve the issue but that did not work either. What am I doing wrong? Is there actually a way around this problem. If not why does apple sell this product for Ipad users at all?
Thank you for any help/ solution you can offer.
    Regards

I'd ask that on the iPad forum.

  • OIM 11g using too much memory and not releasing it when shutting down

    Hello,
we have a problem with OIM 11g using too much memory (about 5gb) and it's not releasing it at shutdown (4gb still used).
We are using a VM with RedHat Linux 5.6. Originally we had 4gb RAM + 2gb swap file. We installed Admin Server, OAM, OIM and SOA on that machine but quickly realised we couldn't run all 4 programs at once in 6gb. AdminServer could run with 2 other products, but it was a tight fit in memory.
So we increased the RAM to 8gb (still 2gb swap file). But then our problem occured : I start the Admin Server (2.7gb total memory used), then OAM (4.6gb total memory used) and then OIM. After it started the server is now using 9.6gb of memory (~300mb of free memory) ! The problem gets even better : after I shut down everything (OIM, OAM, admin server) the "top" command show that there is still 4gb of memory used even tho nothing else is running on the server ! There is absolutely no other process (other than root stuff) running and no other users connected to the machine. After a reboot, it shows 400mb of memory used. I tried restarting the programs and it did the same thing.
Our intuition is that there might be a memory leak or some bug in OIM that might use up almost all the free memory and it's not releasing it upon shutdown. It might have been there before we increased the memory but have not noticed it since memory was already tight.
Anyone encountered the same problem ? Any idea ? Any suggestion to narrow down the problem ?
    Thank you

You can adjust the memory settings for WLS by editing the setSOADomainEnv.sh file that can be found in your /middleware/user_projects/domains/<domain>/bin/ folder. There is an argument called PORT_MEM_ARGS which is used to set your Java memory arguments. This way you can decrease/increase the amount of memory used by each managed server.
I usually type "ps -ef | grep oracle" to see what processes are running by the oracle user. This way the output doesn't get cluttered with root processes.
