Using too much space

I have a movie a little over 600MB, but when I try to use DVDSP, it will say the data is over the 4.7GB max on the DVD and won't burn.
However, when I try to use DeVeDe on my Linux machine, it burns the DVD just fine.

File size means nothing. Its the length of video thats important. How long is your video? Use a bitrate calculator to determine your correct avg bitrate.

  • Screen came up that Firefox is using too much space?????

Doing some web browsing and a screen came up saying that Firefox was using too much space. How can I fix this?

I have found the message useful as a reminder to restart Firefox soon, because of it I am a lot more likely to restart Firefox if leave the room so it will have been restarted automatically by the time I get back. It is measuring memory, but once my CPU time gets near 50 minutes it may soon be 1 hour then 2 hours, I think Firefox is running better now both because Firefox has identified some problems and because of the reminder from AVG.
I wouldn't advise disabling the warning, and I don't think anyone on the AVG forum thread would be doing it either but here is their own thread:

Firefox can be quickly restarted with an extension that shuts down Firefox, restarts Firefox, and returns user to where they were automatically. "Restartless Restart" for current Firefox users. Firefox users up to Firefox 3.6.* would have to use the older extension "QuickRestart"

  • ICloud Photos on my iPad uses too much space

I updated to iOS 8.3 and enabled iCloud Photo on all my devices and have it enabled on my iMac with the latest OSX Yosemite.  Since then, the Photos app on my iPad is taking far too much space even though I have enabled the optimize storage feature on the iPad.  Is there away to reduce the number of Photos available on my iPad without turning off the iCloud Photo feature? Is it possible to view only a subset of all my photos or is it all or none with iCloud?

I had the same thought that it would be nice if I could specify a subset of the photos on my Mac to be included in iCloud Photo Library. There isn't an option and the only work around I have found would be to have to Photos libraries on my Mac -- one with iCloud on and the other with it off. Not an easy solution. • Itunes match using too much space on iphone

I originally had about 12 gb of music on my iphone 4s after synching my full music library through iTunes.  However, now that I've turned on iTunes Match, the iTunes synch screen indicates that the storage space used for my music has doubled to 24gb.
Does using iTunes Match require that you use double the storage space on an iOS device?

The most likely reason for an increased use of storage space on your phone is if Match has replaced some of your songs on your Mac with higher quality 256Kb files, thereby increasing their Mb size, which you are now syncing to your phone.
With Match turned on, you can still Sync music from iTunes in the 'tradional' way, by plugging the phone in & choosing the songs to sync. This is still the quickest way to get songs on your phone & give you the most control.
When playing songs that aren't 'traditionally' synced to your phone. ie, getting them from the Cloud, there are TWO (2) options.
    1) You can STREAM the songs from the cloud & listen to them on your device, but it won't actually download the song to you device's storage drive. You do this by just clicking on the song title of what you want to played.
    2) You can DOWNLOAD the song to physically take up place on your devices storage drive. You do this by clicking on the cloud symbol with the little downwards facing arrow. As the cloud has all your matched music in 256kb quality, downloading songs to your device this way will take up more space on your storage drive then you were used to, if your original files were of lesser quality on your Mac.
Hope that clears things up a bit mate? It's been a minefield of stuff to work out for me too, but looks like i've got the majority of it working.

  • Time Machine Backs Up 30-39G every day ??? Using too much Space on the TC

I installed the TC about 2 weeks ago. The first backup went as plan and took all night. But the problem (I think) is that incremental backups take place during the day but every day at the end of the day the TM does a 30 to 39G backup and is using up all the space on the TC. I am sure I am not adding 30 something G every day. Can someone tell me how to setup the TM to not use all the space. I got the TC 500G 2 weeks ago and is down to 219G of free space. I think that is not right.
    Please help
    Thanks

That should do it. Time Machine will backup an active VM each hour if there are changes (i.e. VM is running). That amounts to 2GB+ per hour depending on the size of your VM.
To recovery that space, you need to delete the file (and all versions) from the backup. Open Finder and go to your VM folder. Click on the Time Machine icon on the Dock. Click on that file and click the Gears button. You will be given the option of +Delete All Backups of -----+. All instances of this file will be delete from TM.
To backup your VM, occasionally drag and drop the VM folder to a folder on your backup drive. TM will not touch this.
For Fusion user, go to settings and set up a shared folder outside of the VM. Fusion will then access and save to this folder. Corruption of the VM will not affect these documents. As well, TM will back up this folder as long as you have not excluded it.
    Good luck!

  • Re ripping using too much space

I bought a Classic 120 last year and have filled it with 60GB (without artwork). Initially I decided not to keep the songs on itunes and deleted them all. However I recently bought a shuffle and realised it would be better to have all the songs in the itunes library so that I could create playlists. I started to put all my songs back into the itunes library, this time with artwork but the songs seem to be taking up a huge amount of space when put back on the Classic.
What I have done is to firstly delete the songs from the ipod then re rip the CD and then put them back on with artwork. I had imagined the artwork would take little space. I have just put on 15 albums and it has taken 1Gb of space. This seems a lot for just artwork. Am I doing something wrong? Could it be possible that the original songs were not deleted from the ipod and that I have 2 copies on the ipod?

Try Restoring your Classic in iTunes and then putting the songs back on.
Also check your import settings in iTunes to make sure you are not importing at a much higher quality than you previously used.

  • ITunes uses too much space

I have a Dell PC, and I use iTunes to manage my iPod. I was just looking for a few files I can delete (my hard disk is becoming too small) and I noticed that I have 3 separate iTunes subfolders in the Program Files folder: iTunes - 52MB, 2925 files 12/18/2011; iTunes(2) - 80MB, 1828 files, 2/19/2010; and iTunes(3) - 90MB, 1813 files, 6/17/2010; and another folder, not a subfolder of Program files, named Itunes Music - 603 MB, 188 files, 6/24/2006. Does anyone have any idea why there are so many? Can I get rid of any of them? What about getting rid of all of them, then reinstall? It's a relatively old (Gen. 2?) ipod.
BTW, I don't have any paid music (it's either free or loaded from my own CDs) but mostly I've got free podcasts, so it could be recreated although it'd be a PITA.

Some of those are backups iTunes makes.  I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to mess around with any of these files. A better option would be to invest in an external hard drive and copy your iTunes library over to that, which in turn will free up space on your PC's main drive.  You can buy pretty bulky storage drives for quite cheap these days.

  • ITunes libraries are using too much space on my HD

My iMac HD has 250GB; I have two external HD with 1TB each. I'd like to make space on the iMac by putting those files on one of the externals. Is that going to be a problem? If I can do it, will it affect my Time Machine (meaning will the back up I have in the Time Machine eventually be erased with each successive back up)? Any hints or tips you have will be appreciated.
    Thank ya much,

  • SER files using too much space

Our production server had almost used 90 GB in the past one year. After digging further, I realized that the audit folder in the document storage is using up all the space.
Is there a way to purge the files and not lose any data ? Where are the pdfs used in the workflow like attachment, etc. stored in the file system or the Adobe database ?

    Hello,
    Thank you for your reply,
I have already cleaned the GD folders (using workbench) and as I said I have enough space on my hard drive, so why I am getting this error?
I am assuming that the only limitation to recording should be the space? Is it like this or is also affected by the available memory?
I am noticing that workbench is consuming memory and at some points (during and not during recording) it give messages about that shortage of memory, I have tried adjusting Xms, Xmx in workbench.ini to fix that.. Does this have any relation to the recording problem?
Now I am trying to move some parts of the process map into sub-processes so the number of steps decrease hopefully I will be able to record the run of these sub-process individually, this can help to some extent but I am sure this error will show again since my process contains couple of loops and recording stops after a few steps over 20 or 15 which kind of low compared to the number of steps I want to record.
    Greetings,

  • The iCloud Drive folder in Library/Mobile Documents is taking up way too much space on my startup disk.

The iCloud Drive folder in Library/Mobile Documents is taking up way too much space on my startup disk
I was hoping my files would stay in the cloud and not take up a ton of space on my machine (only a 128gb SSD).  But while performing an overnight time machine backup I came back to find a "Startup Disk Full" error message.  I only have about 20gb used locally but over 200gb in iCloud Drive at the moment.
Is there a way to clear the cache so my files stay on iCloud and not hogging space on my SSD? Or a way to redirect this library to my 2nd hard drive?
I'm using a 15" mid-2012 Macbook Pro with a 1TB hard drive and I've replaced the optical drive with a 128gb SSD for my OS (which is where my library is, hence the difficulty).
    Thank you!

While puttering around after posting this I think I found my personal solution here: http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/qt/Move-Your-Home-Folder-To-A-New-Loc ation.htm
I'm just going to move my home folder to my 2nd internal 1TB hard drive to solve my problem.
But my question remains, how can we minimize the amount of local space iCloud Drive ***** up?  I wanted to get the rumored new macbook air that might come out next year but this is a big turn off if iCloud drive is going to overwhelm the SSD in the AIr.

  • Apps taking up too much space on my computer harddrive?

    Hi guys,
Whenever I hook my iPad & iPhone up to iTunes it automatically starts to upload all of the apps from both devices onto my computer. This wouldn't be such a problem, but between the iPhone and the iPad, it takes up around 40 GB of space from apps all by themselves. I store music/videos on an external harddrive so I'm not completely starved for harddrive space but I was wondering if someone could tell me what I can do to keep my iPad/iPhone apps from eating up too much space on my computer?
Seems like I should be able to avoid having the iPhone/iPad (I use both) upload and backup all of my apps to my computer through iTunes but I also tried doing a backup straight ti iCloud and it didn't do the trick.
Does anyone have any answers on this please? Thanks.

400 apps taking up 13.6Gb so I get an estimate of 1,175 (wow I have some bulky apps!) but 40Gb sounds like quite a haul.
A couple of things come to mind. First is that occasionally iTunes can neglect to delete the old copy when apps are updated so you could have some orphaned files in your Mobile Applications folder.
Second, your apps should be stored in the same location as your music and movies but I'm guessing from what you've written that they're not. This means you are likely to have a split library with the database and supporting files on your internal drive and media in another folder, but in the old school layout. Assuming you are happy letting iTunes organize your files (and you have a backup) using File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder <Media Folder>, followed by File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files will sort that out. You'll have to delete the now redundant copies of the apps on your internal drive. The good news is that this will have dealt with any orphaned apps.
In the long term you might want to consider making your library portable.
Note switching to iCloud backup should not remove any content from your computer. I suspect purchases still get transferred when syncing but I've not tested it.

  • What is the best way to manage my iPhoto, which is taking up too much space on my MacBook Pro?

What is the best way to manage my iPhoto, which is taking up too much space on my MacBook Pro?
Specifically, I'd like to keep some of my favorite pictures on the laptop while moving the rest to an external hard drive. Is there a way to tag just a few pictures inside an event/album as "favorite", while storing the rest in an EHD, but still keep them connected to the same event/album? I'd like to have just the favorite pictures on the laptop, but when I have the EHD connected,  be able to view all my pictures in the same place, and not have to browse through separate hard drives. Ideally, whether or not a picture is designated as "favorite" will determine where it resides.
    Is this at all possible?
I have only 7 GB left on my HD and I'm desperately needing a solution!
    Thanks!

You need two libraries to do this. One on the external with all your Photos. One on the internal with a subset - your favourites. You do it this way to make backing up easier - that is, back up the library with everything, so you're only backing up one.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events/albums/photos you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
