Utf8 and substr question

We're using oracle linux 5 as os and oracle 11.2 ee and AL32UTF8 characterset in our db. The os locale is set to en_US.UTF-8 and NLS_LANG is set to AMERIAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8.
The users of different countries (western and eastern europe) work with a forms application and modify data (with language specific characters) in the UTF8 database without any problems.
On the database server we generate some flat files (over all countries) for different interfaces. When I open the flat file in a shell with putty (setting character set to UTF8) every language specific character is correct.
Our partners load the flat file via sql loader in a flat table and split it up with their own procedures. Our hungarian partner has troubles with special characters. For testing I've set the NLS to HUNGARIAN_HUNGARY.EE8MSWIN1250 before creating the flat file. Now he could process the file.
So what is wrong in his environment? He is also using AL32UTF in his database. Should he use substrc instead of a normal substr function in his procedures? He also tried to set NLS to AMERIAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8 before processing the flat file without positive result...

## Our hungarian partner has troubles with special characters.
We cannot help with so little information. If setting NLS_LANG to .EE8MSWIN1250 helped, then the partner's client environment may be set to .EE8MSWIN1250 as well and files encoded in AL32UTF8 do not load correctly. The partner's test to set NLS_LANG could have been flawed (e.g. a misspelled variable name) and this is why it did not helped. But I can only speculate.

UTF8 and Traditional chinese display problem
I have having problems displaying chinese because I am trying to pull data from 2 difference sources into a 3rd source.
Question 1
I am using Oracle 8.17 on Sun Solaris - (in China).
The NLS_LANG on that machine (Machine name is CNCIM) is American. The NLS_CHARACTERSET is ZHS16GBK.
We are using Java to write data into this server. The data has been stored as UTF8.
When I use TOAD, to look at the chinese characters, I cannot see the actual characters.
What I see in TOAD is something like this

Convert function does not seem to work. Can someone advice me how I can see the raw data in chinese?

Currently, I am also trying to import the above UTF8 data into my Local Oracle Machine (APDM)
The NLS_LANG on that machine is American. The NLS_CHARACTERSET is WE8ISO8859P1.
And at the sametime, I am trying to import information from SQL2000 into Local Oracle Machine (APDM).
I was told that the data in SQL2000 has been setup as tradtional Chinese.
What type of settings should I have on my local machine(APDM) to allow me to view Chinese data (From CNCIM - UTF8) and to see the SQL2000(traditional chinese) data at the same time? Should this settings
be configured for my client too?My hunch is that Toad either does not support the display of Chinese characters, at least not without setting your Windows regional settings to Chinese. Can you retrieve the data via your Java application?
If your database character set is ZHS16GBK, that should be the character set that the data is stored in the database. If your Java application is sending over UTF-8 encoded data, you need to ensure that the NLS_LANG settings on the client machine identify the data as UTF-8 so that Oracle can do the necessary character set conversion.
If your local database is using the ISO 8859-1 character set, it cannot store Chinese data. You would need to create a new database with a character set that supports Chinese if you wanted to store Chinese data there.

Im have to use INSTR and SUBSTR functions to test that the value is a valid (as above) number before TO_NUMBER is called:
SELECT TO_NUMBER('?? ') //HERE ?? and a space (for 100 etc) is for the values as above

WHERE ....INSTR(......)<=;
(Hence if the number is true then number comes back or it says no rows)
and also id non numberic it should also be tested.

the where clause looks at all three spaces to make sure values are correct (given number or non-numberic values only)
(Hence if the number is true then number comes back (meaning true)
or it says NO rows)
If value is non numeric, test it to allow non numberic also.

I think it is caused by that the fields' not enought long.UTF must use 3 characters for one chinese,but in our database only 2 characters for one chinese.How can I resolve this puzzle,please help me!I've got many more tips from our experts:

All I am trying to do is, if first 4 letters of the data of xml tag ITEM = 'Summ'
then print a constant word 'Notes'

I have a similar requirement, however instead of static text in the example i.e ITEM I am trying to get a substring from a tag value directly. Ex - Tag Value <eod>23-10-2009<eod>. I am trying to pick up the value 10 in the particular example and trying to compare with 1, which would be false and hence I need to print as false. I cannot use a hardcoded value since the value between the tags <eod> is dynamic and I need to use that itself.
Can you please provide me with the sytax which can achieve this?

Performance issue and functional question regarding updates on tables
A person at my site wrote some code to update a custom field on the MARC table that was being copied from the MARA table. Here is what I would have expected to see as the code. Assume that both sets of code have a parameter called p_werks which is the plant in question.

Here's the question - why did this person enqueue and dequeue explicit locks like this ? They claimed it was to prevent issues - what issues ??? Is there something special about updating tables that we don't know about ? We've actually seen it where the system runs out of these ENQUEUE locks.
Before you all go off the deep end and ask why not just do the update, keep in mind that you don't want to update a million + rows and then do a commit either - that locks up the entire table!The ENQUEUE lock insure that another program called by another user will not update the data at the same time, so preventing database coherence to be lost. In fact, another user on a SAP correct transaction, has read the record and locked it, so when it will be updated your modifications will be lost, also you could override modifications made by another user in another luw.
You cannot use a COMMIT WORK in a SELECT - ENDSELECT, because COMMIT WORK will close each and every opened database cursor, so your first idea would dump after the first update. (so the internal table is mandatory)

Spam filtering solution for iPhone and a question.
I've read a lot of posts about spam filtering for the iPhone and have yet another solution and a question. I use SpamSieve and I am not affiliated with them in any way. The nice thing about SpamSieve is that if it is the first rule in your Mail.app rule set any mail that follows has already been filtered. All you need to do then is create another rule that redirects email to what ever mail account you choose. Since my ISP allows multiple accounts, I will simply create an iPhone@myISP account.
Now the question. Is it possible to write an applescript that will turn the redirect rule on or off so that I don't have to dig into the rules section of Mail to get this done?

I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error... Help!!
If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup. -

Create an Identity Source Sequence using AD as an Authentication Source. Go to Administration > Identity Management > Identity Source Sequences. Either Edit or +Add a Sequence and choose from the Authentication Sources shown.
Then choose that Identity Source Sequence by going to Administration > Web Portal Management > Settings. Double-click Sponsor from the Left Menu and click Authentication Source. Choose the Identity Source Sequence. Click Save.

As a matter of fact, since many features of SAP B1 has not changed, just as you asserted, I took cognizance of new enhancements to the solution over the various releases, especially as it relates to the functionalities. By extension however, most questions for prior releases applies to the successor release.
Furthermore, there was a mix-up in the download. Ideally, you should have three sections in the book. Section I (release 2004, by extension - 2005 and 2007 releases); Section II (release 2005, by extension - 2007 release) and Section III (release 2007). The document has been reviewed. 2. On localization, SAP Business One has more than 10,000 installations across the world. The book is not intended to be "localization specific". It is intended to serve as a certification review for functionalities that cuts across board with a mix of localized functionalities. I am sure you found in there a number of localization questions for other countries like UK. My advice for individuals using the book is to identify which questions apply to their localization.

Flash Security Settings and Random Questions not Displaying
Hey folks,
I created a Captivate 4 project with 3 slides and a question pool of about 70 questions in which I am randomly pulling in. I am using IE7 and Flash 10. Publishing in Flash 10. If I publish or view in Preview in a web browser the project launches, plays the first 3 slides, and then goes blank when the first question should appear. Note: previewing the project AND publishing the project as an .exe does launch and display all the questions correctly. It ends up being a flash security issue. I went to the adobe site and via the Adobe Flash Player Security Manager" I entered in the main .SWF captivate-generated file as a trusted file and then re-ran the published captivate project and it ran correctly. Question is ... what do I need to do to set up flash or my project so I don't have to do this for every new project that I deploy? I don't want to have the users have to go in and add whatever I deploy as a trusted file. It's also a little confusing as to why the first three slides played and it stopped at the questions ... seems like if it's not a trusted file, that it wouldn't run at all.

I think I'd be investigating a temporary web server to host on until things are ready. Here's where it will help.
By providing files to the end users, if you are copying files over you end up having to explain how to save the files. You then have to walk them through setting the Flash Security so they can properly view. It all just becomes a pain in the kazoo.
If you can find some server space, you simply upload the content and provide a link for the users to view the content.
Other than that, if you are insistent that copying is the way to fly, I might suggest you establish a known location where you want everyone to copy their files. Perhaps C:\TestFolder. Then provide some instruction on how to configure the folder with the relaxed Flash Security. From there forward, anything they copy to the folder should need no security adjustment.
