UTF8 Support
My platform: Ora 8.1.7 UTF8 Encoded, Portal 3.0, Win 2000 Prof. Enviromental Variable NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8
owa_util.get_cgi_env('REQUEST_CHARSET') returns UTF8
If I enter for example text "omega" in greek alphabet into the database using portlet with standard html form, then all portlets accesing this data return error message: "Error: The portlet could not be contacted.". The same happens if I log out and log back and querry the greek record.
What is the problem?
I have written my own servlet connecting to my UTF8 database. In my servlet I have had to specialy handle the java streams. It has worked.
In release notes you write: "The character set setting that you use on your middle tier should be identical to the character set setting of your database."
How should I set this character set on the midle tier? I have 9iAS and 8i on the same box.
Do you have some recomedations?
Hi,
We have a portlet that gives similar behavior - anytime you enter an 'accuting vowel', the portlet breaks. But entering the same thing in the PL/SQL application that the Portlet is based on, doesn't break the application.
There are bugs in WebIV about the XML parser that causes similar problems in
the Apps (our portlet uses the XML parser) but those problems are supposed to be resolved since XML parser 2.0.2.8 (and 2.0.2.9 is the version that comes with 8.1.7 and 9ias also). I am not sure what to think, or who we should talk to about this - i.e., whether it's a Portal problem w/rendering the portlets that contain the 'strange' characters, or whether it's a database thing....

Unicode-UTF8-Support for MaxDB?
Hello,
according to general information MaxDB just supports UTF16. If one is
facing the decision to migrate an Oracle 9.2 Non-Unicode-DB to either a Unicode-UTF16-MaxDB or a Unicode-UTF8-Oracle-DB, the answer probably would be to go for a Unicode-UTF8-Oracle-DB because the SAN costs used should be app. half of the MaxDB-SAN-costs.
Is UTF8-Support soon ready for MaxDB?
Thanks for your reply.
br
ChrisHi Chris,
yeah, that note needs a small change (UTF-16 changed into USC-2).
Indeed, a 2TB DB under UTF-8 needs about 3TB under USC-2. So yes, one would need more space for MaxDB, but the TCO is not only dependent on the cost of the SAN. Easy admin, being reorganisation free are only a few of the examples which can drastically lower the TCO of a system. That added to the low cost of the MaxDB software itself <i><b>can</b></i> make a difference.
Because of other topics, which I cannot go into and currently have a higher priority, the UTF-8 support is planned long-term.
I'm not sure if this is allowed, but this (german) article is quite an interesting read:
<a href="http://www.computerwoche.de/produkte_technik/storage/581295/">http://www.computerwoche.de/produkte_technik/storage/581295/</a>
With the Unicode / ASCII mixture I just meant that for example a Unicode WebAS contains ASCII data aswell. Another example: in MDM there's an explicit distinction between the ASCII and UNICODE data. Our interfaces support all three (ASCII, UTF-8 and UCS-2).

I looks to me like Oracle Lite doesn't support the UTF8 character set for storing data. Is this correct?
I have an Oracle 8.1.7 database using UTF8 to store English, Thai, Chinese and Philippino data, and I want to synchronise that with Oracle Lite on Windows 2000 clients. The sync seems to work ok, but any non-english characters are lost in a characterset conversion (display as "?").
Regards
SteveI'm a bit confused by your reply. Can Oracle Lite store data in a unicode characterset such as UTF8? It looks to me like the "UTF-8 support" is limited to the drivers, so that it can load and extract utf-8 data, but not store it. From section 2.2.1 of the release notes:
"Oracle Lite Database is NOT a NLS component. In order to reduce the kernel size, it is built for each language which supports native character sets for Windows. Which means, each language has each kernel. Here are the character sets supported by this release:
- Chinese: MS936 CodePage (Simplified Chinese GBK, ZHS)
- Taiwanese: MS950 CodePage (Traditional Chinese BIG5, ZHT)
- Japanese: MS932 CodePage (Japanese Shift-JIS, JA)
- Korean: MS949 CodePage (Korean, Ko)
The database kernel for each language in this list only supports its corresponding character set. Other multibyte character sets are not supported."
Also the documentation on the DBCharEncoding parameter you mention suggests that it only affects the UTF translation for java programs. Section A.2.3:
"... Specifies the UTF translation performed by Oracle Lite. If set to NATIVE, no UTF translation is performed. If set to UTF8, UTF translation is performed. If this parameter is not specified, the default is UTF8. This applies to Java programs only."
I've tried playing with these parameters, as well as changing the NLS_LANG parameter on the client, and for the mobile server, for the Oracle Lite home, all to no avail. I'm still losing the non-english data during synchronisation and it does look like it's being lost in a character set conversion rather than just being garbled, as each Thai characters is being replaced by the correct number of "?"s. As an example the Thai string "บริษัท บราเดอร์ คอมเมอร์เชี่ยล (ประเทศไทย) จำกัด" on the 8.1.7 database sever appears as "?????? ???????? ?????????????? (?????????) ?????" on the oracle lite database.
Am I missing something here? If I can get this data syncronising correctly then Oracle Lite looks like it will support all our requirments so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. (Should I post this to the globilization forum or does that focus only on Oracle's enterprise editions?)
BTW, thanks for the info on the sorting. Obviously the characterset issue is more a fundamental problem at this stage, but if we can fix this then it's good to know about the sorting abilities. -
Does UTF8 support Kurdish characters?
We are trying to globalize our Telco app to support Kurdish. Our requirement is this:
(1.) Users should be able to enter data from the Oracle Forms clients in Kurdish and English?
(2.) When quering data, Kurdish users should be able to query only their records (data) and English users should be qble to query only there data. i.e. in the Form a Kurdish user should be able to for example, type a customer name is Kurdish and when you press Execute Query the query should bring that customer, whose information is in English. The English user should be as above could be able to query English records.
In order to to this what should I do?
(1.) When creating the DB specify the DB character set as UTF8?? What exactly is the Oracle code I should use?
(2.) Kurdish users should install the Kurdish fonts in their clients and enable them?
(3.) Enghlish users can use normal machine without installing any fonts?
Is this correct or am I missing things here? Should we recommend to the clients where to obtain Kurdish Unified fonts? For the database character set, use AL32UTF8. Also, use the most recent version of Forms. This is for sure. Now, which version of the Kurdish writing system do you want to use - Arabic-, Latin- or Cyrillic-based?

Hi,
I do not mind subscribing for paid membership for forms, it looks great, but it lacks some basic features,
its 21st century and it onyl supports latin1? I am getting following error when I test my for in the web :
"The field contains unsupported characters. Please modify your entry."
I want users to enter other than just latin1, for example utf8 characters actually I want to design my forn in utf8 so its universal, is it really that hard to do?
is there a way to let users enter characters other than latin1?
RegardsHi,
Please check out the last table in this page for unicode support in FormsCentral: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat-com/formscentral/help/formula-syntax-built-in-functions.htm l. Though not all charaters are supported, but FormsCentral allows common ones, not just latin-1 texts.
Thanks,

Cdrtools package, support for nls/utf8 character sets
Hello ppl,
I've been trying desperetly to burn a cd/dvd(k3b) with greek filenames and directory names. I ended up with file names like "???????????????????? (invalid unicode)"
After a lot of searching, i managed to isolate and solve the problem. There has been a patch(http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=52097) for cdrtools to support nls/utf8 character sets.
I guess that 90%+ of people using arch and burning cd's/dvd's, ignore the problem cause they just burn cd's/dvd's using standard english characters.
For all others here it is :
# Patched cdrtools to support nls/utf8 character sets

It's a modified pkgbuild of the official arch cdrtools package (http://cvs.archlinux.org/cgi-bin/viewcv … cvs-markup) patched to support nls/utf8 character sets.
Worked like a charm.
If u want to install it, u should uninstall the cdrtools package
pacman -Rd cdrtools
P.S.: I've issued this as a bug in http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/3830 but nobody seemed to care...  :cry:Hi Bharat,
I have created a Oracle 8.1.7 database with UTF8 character set
on WINDOWS 2000.
Now , I want to store and retrieve information in other languages
say Japanese or Hindi .
I had set the NLS Language and NLS Terrritory to HINDI and INDIA
in the SQL*PLUS session but could not see the information. You cannot view Hindi using SQL*Plus. You need iSQL*Plus.
(Available as a download from OTN, and requiring the Oracle HTTP
server).
Then you need the fonts (either Mangal from Microsoft or
Code2000).
Have your NLS_LANG settings in your registry to
AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8. (I have not tried with HINDI etc, because
I need my solution to work with 806,817 and 901, and HINDI was
not available with 806).
Install the language pack for Devanagari/Indic languages
(c_iscii.dll) on Windows NT/2000/XP.
How can I use the Forms 6i to support this languages ?I am not sure about that.
Do write back if this does not solve your problem.

How do you add utf8 support to the system for Xwindow applications?
It's probably best to ask stuff like this in the technologies forum:
https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_technologies -
Issue inserting UTF8 data into Oracle in windows environment.
I have a UTF8 PHP application that is writing a string containing special characters to oracle through a ODBC connection. The Oracle database is setup for UTF8 support.
Here is the issue. I have a simple string, "louis de funès". When the data manually moved correctly in UTF8 the data comes up correctly. The Oracle dump() shows:
WORKING DATA:
String: louis de funès
select keywords, dump(keywords, 17) from ame_links where keywords like '%louis de %';
Typ=1 Len=15: l,o,u,i,s, ,d,e, ,f,u,n,c3,a8,s
However, when the same string is Inserted through the PHP application the data shows up in the db like this.
NOT - WORKING:
String: louis de funès
select keywords, dump(keywords, 17) from ame_links where keywords like '%louis de %';
Typ=1 Len=17: l,o,u,i,s, ,d,e, ,f,u,n,c3,83,c2,a8,
(The è character has 4 bytes associated with it)
Windows Setup:
Windows Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> ORACLE -> HOME0 ->
NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8
HTTP headers are set for Content-Type:text/html; charset=UTF-8.
Anyone know why I would get 2 extra bytes (83,c2) added in the middle of the è character? Is the oracle client doing some other type of character set conversion before I insert it into the database.
I have also noticed that when I change the NLS_LANG from AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 to AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252 that the 4 byte 'è' character works and the 2 byte character doesn't.I reproduced the porblem. Only differnce from yours is that it reproduces regardless the NLS_LANG setting.
Although I cannot be 100% sure, I think what is happening is that Microsoft ODBC Driver Manager converts the insert statement from Windows ACP to Unicode, then calls SQLExecDirectW (WideChar version of SQLExecDirect) of the Oracle ODBC Driver and passes the insert statement in Unicode. Since your PHP code passed the insert statement in UTF-8 encoding, and the Driver Manager converted it from Windows ACP to Unicode, the letter e with grave ("c3,a8" in UTF-8) was wrongly converted to U+00c3, U+00a8 in the Unicode insert statement, then converted to UTF8 ( "c3,83,c2,a8") by Oracle.
By looking at the PHP source code, apparently PHP odbc_exec() function calls ANSI SQLExecDirect().
I tried to verify that the Driver Manager calls SQLExecDirectW() of Oracle ODBC Driver by enabling the ODBC Tracing, but I couldn't make it work. It genetates an emply SQL.LOG file. So my investigation stops here.
IF YOUR METADATA NAMES ARE ASCII ONLY, AND NON-ASCII CHARACTERS APPEAR ONLY IN DATA, you can workaround this problem by binding data. For example,
$stmt = odbc_prepare($conn, "insert into AME_LINKS (keywords, site_id) values (?, ?)");
$rs = odbc_execute($stmt, array($invar,77));

Hi ,
I was wondering if it is possible to have a oracle database that stores data in different languages.
I have gone through few blogs which says Oracle supports Unicode characters & UTF8 supports all languages including multi-byte.
I would like to know what are the languages supported by oracle 10G.
Thanks in advance!
ParaPlease, review this guide: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10729/toc.htm
It is the 11.2 version of the manual but the manual gets improved from release to release so it is better to read this version. Refer to the 10.2 version of the manual to verify the languages and territories that are supported in 10.2: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/toc.htm
Note, Oracle has multiple levels of language support. The levels are, in increasing number of languages supported at this level:
1. Oracle Text supports advanced linguistic operations for the given language.
2. Error messages and user interface of many tools, including administrative tools, are translated to the given language.
3. Error messages and user interface of many end-user tools, but not administrative tools, are translated to the given language.
4. Oracle Text supports basic linguistic operations (e.g. stemming) for the given language.
5. Sorting according to conventions of the given language is supported.
6. Date, number and currency formatting according to conventions of the given language/territory is supported.
7. Text in the given language can be stored.
I am not quite sure about the order of levels 3-5, that is, which one contains more languages.
Date, number and currency formatting depends mainly on territories (countries), not languages.
Level 7, which is the ability of the database to store text in a given language and do some basic text processing on it, like SUBSTR, INSTR or LIKE, practically contains all languages of the world. The prerequisite is that the database character set is AL32UTF8.

Hi All,
We are developing a BW Upgrade Tool. A part of which gives information about System Landscape that may be useful before or after upgrade for a Basis Consultant. Following information is obtained as a output of the tool. So could you please glance through it & tell me is this information is relevent and what more should be there?
As I'm a BW consultant I have very little knowlege of Basis.

Very useful post!
I am looking for similar accelerators for
Software Inventory Accelerator
Hardware Inventory Accelerator
Interfaces Inventory
Customization Assessment Accelerator
Sizing Tool
Which helps us to come up with the relevant Bill of Matetials for every area mentioned above, and the ones which I dont know...
Request help on such accelerators... Any clues?
Any reply, help is highly appreciated.

I am programing the router with ASDM so if you could tell me what i need to do from the GUI to fix this.Dan,
Looking at the output,
Status: Resolving address of domain.com
Status: Connecting to ExternalIP:990...
Status: Connection established, initializing TLS...
Status: Verifying certificate...
Status: TLS/SSL connection established, waiting for welcome message...
This looks like FTPS which is not supported on the ASA. You can workaround it by trying to connect using Active mode from the outside instead of PSV.
You can find more info here:

Conky won't stay below other windows...
Hellu!
I'm currently using conky with a conkyrc from my Ubuntu laptop which works quite well... Problem is, when Compiz is started, Conky suddently wants to stay on top of all other windows. Restarting conky fixes the problem, but I'd rather not restart conky everytime i login to the system... Anyone know how to fix this?
Also. Is there a way to add conky to compiz' widget-layer and still have it below all other windows? Basically, I want it on the desktop unless i hit a key, which makes it come on top of everything.
Heres my conky configuration:
# Use Xft?

[Solved] Weather in conky won't work
- I installed conkyforecast-bzr from AUR
- I set my weather conky to run at startup pointing to the correct conkyrc file (I know it's correct because when I change it it restarts)
- I pointed my conkyrc to the correct conkyForecast.template file
- The fonts are installed to ~/.icons, /usr/share/icons, and usr/share/fonts/truetype
- I found my XOAP location id and put it in the conkyrc file

All that shows up on my desktop for conky is "Weather -----------------------"
I've spent hours trying to figure this out, scoured the internet for info, and I can't find anything wrong with my files.
Last edited by herrvideman (2010-09-08 15:05:14)Please read /usr/share/conkyforecast/README, I'm assuming you need to register at http://www.weather.com/services/xmloap.html and fill in conkyForecast.config. The skel file is located at /usr/share/conkyforecast/conkyForecast.config just copy it into your home and fill it out.

[SOLVED!] Conky won't run undecorated, please assist.
Greetings,
As suggested in my other thread, I have been working on customizing a conky script that simply shows the time, date, calendar, current weather, and forecast, and I have completed it.
However I have ran into a problem. Up until I basically had it completed, it would run fine undecorated without any window borders and the like. But now it won't, and it laughs at me instead. If I want to see my conky, I have to have it decorated in the window border, which is a pain and something I don't want. I want it to simply blend in with my desktop.
Anyways, I am hoping someone can help me solve this. I know it runs. If I set it to decorate, it pops up, info and all. If I set it to undecorate, it laughs at me, but shows up lxtask and htop.
Here's my .conkyrc

Again, all I need help with is having it run undecorated without any window decoration. I am running Fluxbox as my WM. If you need any other info, please let me know. Thanks.

About the widget; I used Sid's conky script from the conky screenshot as my base, it was the first conky I had tried. Though I only ended up keeping the forecast portion after editing it massively...
I think it must have been the own_window_hints throwing me off.
