Vanishing Mail

I was recently having trouble receiving an emails. After some trial and error, here is what I was able to determine:
1. Checking my IMAP account with SquirllMail (webmail) revealed that messages were delivered as expected when mail.app was not running.
2. While mail.app was running incoming mail just vanished. It did not end up in trash or spam or any other folder, nor did it bounce back to the sender. I repeated several times and am certain that there was a correlation.
3. After removing all rules in mail.app preferences, everything started working normally. All of the rules had been working perfectly for several days until this afternoon, and the most destructive thing any of them were set to do is move messages with very specific senders/subjects to the trash.
Has anybody else experienced similar problems?

Also, for what it's worth the email address in question is my business domain hosted by MediaLayer. Other users on this domain use thunderbird and webmail apps with no issues.

  • Mountain lion apple mail vanishes mail after reading

after installing mountain lion, mails in apple mail vanish seconds after being readed

Sorry. I don't use Exchange, and I don't recognize the symptoms. Certainly, they do not match my experience with Mail in Mountain Lion. Let me ask a few more questions.
Just to be clear: The messages disappear just after being read, not just after being downloaded? They are visible until you read them?
Corindagal, if Find sees them in the Inbox, I agree that it's just a display problem. Any chance you are reading through a "smart mailbox" set to show only unread messages? Might your Inbox be sorted by read/unread?
Also, what mail reader were you using prior to Mountain Lion? Apple's Mail in a previous system? What level?

  • Emails vanished - although Spotlight finds them

Even after rebuilding each & every mailbox, there are emails that seem to have disappeared - although I can find them with Spotlight & open them in Mail.app by clicking at the Spotlight search results. The vanished mail opens - everything is fine. I close it - and it's gone again, only to be found again by Spotlight, not by Mail.app.
    What else could I do?
    Thanks a lot
    Peter

    Sorry - another rebuild worked!

  • File Vault Issue with Migration Assistant

I've just spent 24hrs sorting out the mess this process left. Migrated - apparently successfully - my file vault protected home folder / user account from my old G4 466MHz 30Gb machine running 10.3.8. Everything ran perfectly until I tried to import my 30Gb iTunes library from a separate hard drive. A screen popped up telling me I only had 10Gb of space available in my home folder, whereas the Mac HD showed 580Gb available. Spoke to Applecare, who advised me to switch off file vault and then turn it on again. Did this, but when I switched it off it mashed a lot of data. Address book info vanished, Mail Boxes vanished, Safari bookmarks vanished, then Mail would not run at all. Nightmare. The chap at Applecare said File Vault is more trouble than it's worth. All sorted by creating a new admin account on the machine and re-loading from backups. My question is this; File vault retrieves unused disk space in the home folder at shutdown. How important is this? I thought it kept the machine running nice and smoothly. If I leave it switched off, will I experience speed loss over time?

  • IPhone 5S: random reboot triggers vanished apps (Settings, Mail, Phone and more...)

For the last day or so, a high percentage of apps that I'd tried launching crashed instantly on my iPhone 5S with iOS 7.0.6. Reboot didn't help that problem. Facebook app, for example, still opens briefly and a second later crashes. Every. Time.
Cut to this morning when my phone rebooted itself randomly and upon returning, many apps had vanished including system apps including Phone, Settings and Mail as well as Tweetbot, Google Voice,Kindle and much more). None of these apps show up in Spotlight search at all. App Store has, for the apps that are missing (at least the few I spot checked)  an OPEN button instead of download. But when I hit the OPEN button nothing at all happens.
I can't make calls. I can't check or send emails. I can't use many of the apps actually on my phone still. I can't reset even without my Settings app.
What happened and what do I do? Does this require a trip to my local Apple Genius?  Never seen this before and I've had an iPhone sine day one.
Anybody? Thank you in advance for any ideas, advise and suggestions...

Thanks, Jim. Sadly this doesn't appear to be possible at this point. I can't restore my phone from iTunes as it asks me to turn off Find My Phone in my phone's settings app which is no longer an app accessible on my phone. Sigh.

  • In full screen mail, message count vanishes

I'm not sure if this is a Mavericks issue, or has always been an issue. When I use mail with the message viewer as a regular window, the count of messages in the mailbox I'm looking at shows in the window bar. But when I switch to full screen, the count vanishes. Am I missing something?

You're not missing something. When an app is made Full Screen, its title bar is removed. This is true for all apps; though most don't suffer from the loss of a feature the way Mail does.
If you want to see how many messages are in the currently-selected mailbox without leaving Full Screen, move your cursor to the top of the screen to reveal the Menu Bar, click on the "Window" menu and the very last item displayed in the dropdown will be the window title, which includes the message count in parenthesis. Alternatively, you can right-click (two-finger click if on a trackpad) on Mail's icon in the Dock, and it will show you the window name with the message count in parenthesis. Both options are less convenient than glancing at the menu bar, but at least you can remain in Full Screen.

  • My @me account has vanished off my iPad and iPhone and been replaced with @icloud. How do I get my @me mail back or how do I view it?

Can anyone give me some advice. My @me.com email account has vanished and been replaced with @icloud.com and I am at a loss how to view my email or put the account back onto my iPad/iPhone. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can manage your email accounts in
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars
However, you should still get all of your emails, contacts and calendars on your @icloud.com email account just as you do on your @me.com account.
But if not, you can add and remove accounts listed above.

  • How do I keep Mail messages from vanishing?

I don't use  iCloud for much, but I have sent a few Mail messages from my iPad (iCloud address) and I have received a few at that address that I need to be able to view on my Mac and to have available for viewing on my iPad. The received messages consistently disappear after a few weeks. The most recent one that I forwarded to my iCloud address from my desktop machine appeared in the list of messages (already a very short list due to the vanishing act) for a nanosecond when I first opened Mail on my iPad, and then vanished. Only a single message is still there out of maybe a dozen messages that ought to be there.
The iPad is running the most recent iOS version. I use Snow Leopard most of the time on my Mac, but I boot into Mountain Lion when I have to: I sync the iPad in Mountain Lion. I access iCloud through my browser when I'm in Snow Leopard.
What do I have to set or change to make iCloud e-mail at least minimally useful? I've looked at the settings, and don't see anything obvious. My regular e-mail accounts are configured to never automatically be deleted from the server, but I don't see a way to do that with iCloud mail.

Ok, just discovered it only does this in split-keyboard mode.

  • Vanishing sent messages in Apple Mail 4.3

I'm using Mac OS 10.6.4 with Apple Mail 4.3 and I've experienced a bug recently. I noticed that some of my messages, either new ones from scratch or replies to received messages, simply vanished.
If the message was a reply, I can't find it back by clicking on the curly arrow next to the name of the original message. A friend also experienced the same problems and we unfortunately can't replicate or find a logic to this bug. Searching doesn't do the trick, I'm using IMAP and it's also gone on the server but people receive these messages apparently.
Technote: MailTags and Mail Act-On are installed.
Has anyone experience the same problem and manage to isolate the cause of it? Thanks in advance for your help.

I lost everything - inbox, sent, junk, trash - everything. And, one email newsletter I subscribe to sent an email (which eventually vanished) informing me that my subscription to the newsletter had been cancelled - but I didn't cancel it. I suspect that incoming emails, including the newsletter, were returned (or bounced) resulting in the cancellation.
This is a very serious issue Apple needs to address immediately. Mail 4.4 and MobileMe mail are affected, or infected, so now I've set all incoming emails to also be forwarded to a horrible Hotmail account I've had for years. That's the only way I get them.

  • How can I find my email in Apple Mail from before my company switched hosting providers?  People with Outlook have all of their old and new emails.  My old emails have vanished from Apple Mail.

How can I find my email in Apple Mail from before my company switched hosting providers?  People with Outlook in my company have all of their old and new emails.  My old emails have vanished from my Apple Mailbox on my macbook and other Apple devices.  I do not have my mail backed up in time machine recently nor did I export my emailbox recently.  Any ideas?

Try looking in your User folder.
Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Mail/V2
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I have to use it again after every update. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • All e-mail vanished! Please Help.

My 4 year old son was on my computer and all my e-mail has vanished from all the the mailboxes, mail folders and mail trash. It's very odd because, for example, my inbox reads 0 messages, 14 unread. All the others are like that too. If someone out there can tell me how to find the missing folder or files and how to properly put it back where it belongs I would be soooo grateful. In addition, I tried to send and e-mail just to see if things were working and when I hit send nothing happens. Thanks!!!

  • The mail icon on my 4S vanished!

The mail icon on my 4S just vanished, why and how do I get it back?

It is somewhere, maybe in a folder or on a different page.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout if you still can't find it.

  • Duplicate E-mails and Vanished E-mails

Earlier this week I added a new POP e-mail address to my account - and a couple of things have happened. First I lost all the downloaded e-mails in one existing mailbox - they came up in the list but when I clicked on them - a note came up saying I needed to take the account online - it was online. All new e-mails come in - but the old ones vanished. I then pressed the "refresh" button thinking it might bring them back - but after that even the headings vanished.
Secondly - now a new event has occured as of this morning - I am receiving two copies of every e-mail addressed to one of my three mailboxes. I have checked my preferences and do not have the same incoming address for any of them.
My provider is Earthlink. Any suggestioins?

What does “I added a new POP e-mail address to my account” mean? Is that the only thing you did? Could it be that you created a new mail account, then deleted it, for example?
I then pressed the "refresh" button
What do you mean? There is no such thing as a “refresh” button in Mail...
I have checked my preferences and do not have the same incoming
    address for any of them.
Not sure what you mean here either. What identifies a mail account are the User Name and the Incoming Mail Server, not the Email Address. If the username and the incoming mail server are the same, then both accounts are the same, no matter what the email address is...

  • E-mail seeming to be sent but then vanishing

Today I sent several e-mails from my Gmail account on my iPhone. They seemed to get sent, but I just discovered that one of them wasn't in my sent mail file - so I checked on the only other one I remembered, and it wasn't there either. I looked in sent mail and also drafts from both my computer and from my iPhone, and I checked the outbox on the iPhone, and the e-mails have vanished completely.
Has anyone else had this experience? Do you have any idea what would have caused it or how I could prevent it? I have no idea how many e-mails were lost or to whom, so I can't even recreate them or figure out who doesn't have information I thought they had (especially if I replied to a message and then archived it)
    Thanks
    Steph

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
