Various things shutting my computer down

read my later post in the thread about the newest problem
i was having this problem a few days ago and decided to just reinstall (nothing else going on one night so i redid everything), but this problem is still happening. it started after upgrading to xorg7: my computer just randomly decides to shut down, and it looks like gconf is doing it. i had another thread going earlier for a few days but started this new one since i edited everything out of the old one saying the problem was fixed. im running GNOME, using a few applications and all of a sudden my computer is shutting off, unannounced. this has happened probably 18 times in the last week, all abrupt hard shutdowns and they all leave the same footprint in /var/log/messages.log pointing towards something with gconf. im somewhat new to linux (8 months of every day experience) and am not sure where to go about this. since it looks to me like gconf is the culprit, and its shutting me down fairly often, i just want it gone. i dont use it (maybe i do but dont know it), but a bunch of stuff does.
anyone know a fix to this?
let me know if you need more information/log files
here is /var/log/messages.log after my most recent shutdown (the first one since reinstalling noodles): http://briancurtin.com/messages.log.txt

thats a correct assumption, havent touched mkinitrd.conf. i read that the default should be alright for the most part, so being the new guy to arch that i am, i left it how it was. i look a lot stupider now blaming problems on gconf when it was something i left out and didnt know how to do.

  • ISight shuts my computer down...literaly!

    Hello,
So the mystery of my iSight problem began a couple of days ago, when I unplugged the isight from my G4 10.3.9 and then plugged it into my G4 Powerbook 10.4.?. When I plugged iSight into the Powerbook my powerbook screen when black and then I had to restart it but my Powerbook never recognized the iSight at all. In the System profiler no device showed under Firewire.
Cut to few days later...I just plugged in my iSight back into my G4 tower and as soon as I plugged it in (as if power failure) my computer shot down. Not only did it shut down, but I couldn't restart my computer ae all, it became unresponsive. I pressed my start button several times and eventually it did restart. I tried various ways of pluggin in my iSight and restart, etc., but it shut the computer down (as if shorted) everytime and/or when I plugged the iSight into the computer before starting it up, the computer would never start at all.
What is going on??!?!? Does anyone have any ideas??? Please let me know!
BTW, before this all transpired I was using the camera with iChat on regular basis with success...never a problem.
    Thanks,
    Karchi

Your iSight might be damaged. Start by Testing your iSight to ensure it is functional. Apple's suggestions for trouble shooting and resolving common issues are there, too.
If you cannot make your iSight does not work on any Mac with any software, take it and / or your Mac(s) for a professional check by your Apple Service Technician.
If iSight works for some things but you cannot get the entire problem solved, post back what you did, what works, and what does not. We may be able to offer more focused suggestions based on your specifics.

  • Imprting cd tracks shuts my computer down after Itunes upgrade

Updated to the latest Itunes 6.5. Anytime I try to rip songs and add them to my playlist, it shuts my computer down. Was not a problem on previous version of Itunes. I've tried 10 different cds and each one does the same thing. Any suggestions, or anyone know how to download an older version of Itunes? I searched the site, but it keeps sending me to the download page for Itunes 6.5. Thanks

Sounds like some conflict in your system. Try going to the PC makers site, MANUALLY looking for updates to your model and downloading all updates they offer, especailly BIOs, chipset and firmware for the CD ROM.
I say to manually look because some PC makers have some kind of "Auto update" software on the PC or there web site and they usually can not pick up the BIOs and things like it so even if theres an update you need it won't show it
Do you get any flash of a blue screen with an error code when this happens?

Disable any antivirus and firewall software installed on your computer. They can interfere with the update process.

    Hi..
Command + Option + Esc will prompt the Force Quit window.
You can also force quit an app from your Apple menu top left in your screen or by using the Activity Monitor located in Applications/Utilities

My macbook pro says Shockwave Flash plug-in has crashed pretty much every day.  I have to shut the computer down and restart to fix it.  Is there any way I can keep this from happening?

Download the latest version from here ONLY:
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
also, make certain your Mac OS X software is completely up-to-date. There is a Trojan Horse that pretended to be a Flash update, and installed Flash with malware included. The latest security updates removes the malware and all older versions.

  • Why does my Preview app keep shutting my computer down?

For weeks now I've been reporting this issue to Apple but so far I haven't had any response or update fixes.  When I click on a picture file Preview attempts to open the file but then quits or shuts the computer down.  Any help with this?

    Hello,
I wouldn't expect to hear from Apple or see any fixes for 10.5.x at all.
Sadly that excerpt doesn't help me at all, we might get more info by having Console open before you try Preview...
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v
A few dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

  • Firefox won't start, but when I shut my computer down it says that it is running. What is the problem?

Firefox will not open, but when I shut my computer down it says that it is running and must be forced quit. Once I rebute the computer it opens but is very slow and hang up on many web pages. I have reinstalled it with little help. In contrast, Windows Internet Explorer works fine.

Did you check your security software (firewall)?<br />
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.<br />
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.<br />

i am having trouble with my macbook pro. I can not get the mail application to to "quit". It will not respond to anything that i am doing. I cant get it to open or close completely...also it will not let me shut my computer down until i quit mail. can someone please help me with this?

You can forcer quit the application
    >Force quit
This would be preferred.  If you have to force quit the the entire OS- press the power button for a extended period until it forces a immediate shut down.

i recently came back from holiday and tried to start up my laptop (that stayed at home, just shutdown but plugged in). when i turned it on, i got the apple white screen, a timer wheel and a progress bar that when it reached the end of the bar, it just shut the computer down again. i cannot get past this screen and the mac will not turn on. does anybody know how i can fix this please?

Your hard drive is dead and you'll need a new one. If you're the least bit handy, you can replace the drive yourself. You need to decide what capacity and speed you want out of a new drive.
I'm hoping that you had backup schemes in place? If not, there's a chance that, with a tool such as DiskWarrior, you MIGHT be able to grab some data from your dead/dying drive.

  • Safari locks and shuts the computer down.

My MacBook Pro 15 with retina has started locking up and shutting the computer down while in safari.  It usually happens while scrolling down a page.  It seems to be getting more and more frequent.  I've cleared the cache and history but it didn't do anything.  I'm running OS X 10.10.1.  all of my software is uptodate.  Any ideas?

  • Made a bad change to login options under user preferences, changed from "List of users" to "Name and password". I shut the computer down, now I can't login in when I turn the computer back on.  What can I do to fix this problem?

Have Migrated data from IMAC to Macbook twice.  Because I had too many admin ids under user and accounts preferences, I was trying not to delete the extras but that they wouldn't all show at login time.  Under Login Options, I clicked out  "List of Users" and clicked in "Name and password".  Can't remember whether I did anything else.  I shut down the computer and turned it back on to test the change.  I get a dark grey screen with all my admin ids in circled pictures plus one for guest, but doesn't let me do anything with any of the admin ids.  I clicked on any one and nothing happens.  IF i click on the guest circle, it gives me a message that the computer will restart with only Safari allowed.
Since I haven't been able to connect my macbook to my IMac so I can login to the macbook through the Imac, I can't get to my macbook.  There must be a way to fix this problem.  I expected to see places to enter name and password but nothing is allowed to enter.  Please help!

First thing I would do would be to boot in to Lion Recovery (Command+R on boot) and run Disk Utility, both disk and permissions repair.

  • Shutdown now not shutting my computer down now (or ever).

I'm switching to FVWM, and I got rid of KDM and haven't bothered to replace it with anything. When I try to turn off my computer by using shutdown now things seem to go okay and then I get this:
    Entering single-user mode. . . .
    INIT: Going single user
    Give root password for maintenance
    (or type control-D to continue):
If I hit control-D, the system restarts Arch.
If I give the root password and then issue shutdown now again within the maintenance mode I get:
    Switching to runlevel: 1
INIT: Sending processes started by init the TERM signal
INIT: Sending processes started by init the KILL signal
: no more processes left on this run level
And then it displays that until I turn the computer off by holding down the power key. Any ideas?

    1. you need to have some privileges to shutdown the computer. You can use sudo for example, and run
    sudo shutdown
    to shutdown your computer.
    2. Your computer shut down properly since no processes are left. What you are looking for (if I understood right) is that the computer turns off automatically. I think there is something to activate in the kernel (but it should be already activated if you are using the arch or beyond kernel): the Power Management, and ACPI.

  • IPod shuts my computer down

I've got a 20gig click wheel ipod, maybe two years old, used on Windows XP. A few weeks ago, I transferred the songs off my iPod back onto my hard drive.
Ever since then, I have not been able to update my ipod.
Right now, I have about 250 songs in my itunes library. I deleted all the songs I brought off my old iPod, but have a bunch of song files I saved on a flash drive.
Every time I plug in my iPod, it starts to update, gets anywhere from 50-200 songs in, and then it shuts down my computer. My entire laptop just turns off. I have restored my iPod to factory settings and have the most updated versions of iTunes and iPod softwear.
Any idea what's wrong? Do I have an infected iPod? Is there any way I can fix this without shelling out for a new iPod?

Every time I plug in my iPod, it starts to update, gets anywhere from 50-200 songs in, and then it shuts down my computer.
are you getting any sort of blue screen? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.
