Vcr/dvd player combo and compatibility with TV

I received a VCR/DVD player combo (does not have a digital tuner)  for Christmas.  I have basic cable hookup without a cable box and my tv  does not have a digital tuner.  My dilema is that both sides play just fine but I cannot record from the tv.  I would like to know what I can do to remedy this problem.  If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!!

Since you do not have a tuner on the dvd/vcr combo, the only way you can record tv shows on this unit is if your tv has a video output on the back of the tv. Few newer tv's have this feature anymore.
See this picture. There is a pair of audio outs on the right, and the bottm right is a yellow output for video. These are the composite outs to go to a unit like yours.
If the unit came from Best Buy, you can see about exchanging it for a Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK or LG  RC897T units. They are stocked in store and have a HD tuner in them.

  • Connecting a VCR/DVD Player to a new iMac?

    Hi,
Just bought an iMac 17" with the 2.0 cpu. It is connected to the internet via a wireless dsl router elsewhere in our house. No problems, my daughter has put nearly 15-hours on the net with no complaints so far, fingers crossed, of course.
[I have an older Dell pc and a vcr/dvd player connected using RCA plugs directly from the player into my video & sound cards. I have the option of using the S-video cable as well.]
I asked the dealer if it was possible to connect a vcr/dvd player to the iMac for viewing only, and the salesperson did not know. Has anyone seen such a device? A customer at the Apple Store said that I might have to bypass Apple's OS and get a copy of Windows. I thought I was getting rid of the pc when I switched to the iMac.
    Any help would be appreciated!

I use a Dazzle Hollywood DV bridge. It's a firewire A/D converter that lets me capture composite or s-video to my iMac. I also use it to watch TV on my desktop using a VCR and Video Viewer utility.
I would recommend you use a firewire device to ensure maximum compatibility with the Mac (iMovie, etc.) with no need for drivers. In the case of the Hollywood Bridge, it was sold as a Windows only product. But as a firewire device, no software was needed for the Mac. It works great with all video/media software and is recognized like any firewire camcorder.
Although the Hollywood bridge isn't sold anymore, you can find them on ebay. Otherwise, you can research any video A/D converter device such as those sold by Pinnacle (pinnaclesys.com).

  • DVD Player bookmarks and clips.

I did an erase and install of Leopard on my machine, which previously had Tiger on it. I want to restore my DVD Player bookmarks and clips from my backup. Can anyone Tell me which files I need to restore?
I found the following thread—which is dated—on this topic http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4099333&#4099333 which suggests copying over the DVD Payer folder located in ~/library/application support. When comparing contents of the DVD Payer folder in my backup to to one in my existing Leopard installation, the backup copy has files and a Scripts folder that don't exist in Leopard. I'm afraid of adding files to Leopard that don't belong there. Leopard is running great and I don't want to screw it up.

I just copied the .plist file(s), which was sufficient, because I didn't bookmark with thumbnails.
You can find the .plist file for a specific DVD when you click on "Disc Info" in DVD Player and then "Reveal": it then shows up in Finder.

  • DVD Player error: not compatible with OS

Trying to fix a coworkers G5. She has 10.5.8 running, and can't play any DVDs. She is up to date on all software updates.
When I went to the DVD player settings, I couldn't choose "DVD Player". When I tried to open the application it told me that DVD Player is not compatible with this version of the OS X.
Can I reinstall that application? If so, where do I find it? Is it on the system installation disk? Do I need to do a reinstall of OS X?? Any other options?
    Thanks for any help given.

  • Problems with Apple Preview filled forms and compatibility with Windows?

Anyone else having problems with Apple Preview filled out forms and compatibility with Microsoft Windows after Lion?
I've had it happen recently with two different people, where the data I had entered on a fillable PDF form could not be seen by Microsoft Windows, but I saw my data just fine.
I don't know what version of Adobe Acrobat they were running.
    Thanks,
    kt

You will get that first message when the document has been changed in a way that invalidates the internal digital signature that's applied when a document is Reader-enabled. Certain changes are allowed (e.g., filling fields, commenting, signing) and will not invalidate the signature, but others are not. The exact cause of the change is often hard to track down, but it can be due to font problems, some type of file corruption, or something that Acrobat/Reader attempts to correct when the file is opened/saved. You will also get the message if the users system time is not correct and is currently set to some time before the document was Reader-enabled. It seems best to use the most recent version of Acrobat to enabled the documents and recent versions of Reader to work with them.
It problem is probably not related to the user using anything in the Sign pane.

  • What external DVD player plays commercial movies with a 2008 iMac?

VLC plays anything you throw at it.  At least 99.999999%.  What type of file (suffix) is this movie file?  Where did you get the movie from?

You need to determine from the vendor if the player is compatible w/Maverick.  Have you done this yet?  If not, why not?

  • DVD Player Recognition and Connection

When I insert a DVD into the built-in Toshiba DVD Player in my laptop, a message comes up saying that the drive is not found or recognized.  It is not listed in the device manager listing in the Control Panel either.  How do I get this drive recognized and/or connected so it functions.  Thanks, JTC

    Hi Ktydd,
I'm also using Vista for the system.  I did resolve the problem after sending the inquiry.  I used the "ACTION" settings on the DVD player itself and set the drive to "D".  I also ran the antivirus scan and maintenance actions allowed by McAfee.  After rebooting twice, the drive was recognized and it is working fine now.  Hope this helps.

  • Appleworks docs and compatibility with iWorks application?

Appleworks docs and compatibility with iWorks application? Does it exists? I do not have iWorks and will soon be upgrading my op sys to 10.4 (it really is in the mail) I currentl have 10.2.8
I use AppleWorks a great deal. Does iWorks replace it? or enhance it?
Will AppleWorks be upgraded or is 6.2.9 the last iteration?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions SYGWS
iWork (no "s") is not an application, but the name given to the package of two applications, Keynote & Pages.
Keynote is a presentation application that can open AppleWorks 6 presentation files & PowerPoint files. I haven't use Keynote other than to view a few presentation. You probably can find a lot of information by searching the Keynote forum.
Pages is the word processing/page layout application in iWork. Pages is able to open AppleWorks 6 word processing document as well as Word, text & RTF documents. It is not able to open any other AppleWorks documents or older Word documents (I'm not sure how far back it goes). Pages 1 (iWork '05) will not display floating spreadsheet frames in AppleWorks 6 word processing documents, Pages 2 can. Pages 2 has limited spreadsheet functions available in tables (as does Keynote 3, both in iWork '06). Pages can export as PDF, Word, plain text, RTF & HTML (HTML export is disappointing to say the least). It cannot export as AppleWorks (any version).
No one here knows for sure if AppleWorks will ever get another update & those that do have signed non-disclosure agreements, but it is extremely unlikely. In the iWork ’05 press release iWork is said to be "building the successor to AppleWorks."
Many users here, like me, use Pages for what it does so well & AppleWorks for what it does that iWork doesn't (at least not yet) - databases, spreadsheets & drawing.

  • Aperture and DVD Player no longer work with NVIDIA 330M, help!

I recently got my computer back from the Apple Store, had the display switched because the glass kept falling off.
Anyways, since getting it back, I noticed DVD Player doesn't work anymore, it gives me:
    There was an initialization error
A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]
And when I try to start Aperture 3.3:
    Error
The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements for Aperture.
    I have a mid-2010 MBP i5 2.4Ghz with 8GB memory, running OSX 10.7.4.
    Things i have tried:
    Reset PRAM
    Reset SMC
Boot into recovery mode and fix permissions
    Boot into 32 bit kernel
    force fsck
Create new user and try from that account
Also my video conference software, Jabber gives an error and quits too.  Its something with the video.
Switching to Intel HD video, everything works fine.  Only with the NVIDIA 330M do I get this error.
Does anyone have any idea what this may be or what I could try?

I'm having exactly the same problem. Additionally, the DVDs I make aren't recognized by other Macs I've tried. All the Preferences are set correctly.
My dvd player no longer reads commercial movies or a
dvd project I just burned with it. Disks no longer
show on my desktop when they are inserted. When I
got to dvd player and manually press play it reads
    "not Permitted" for both.
The burner does work in as I played the dvd in my
    home dvd player.

  • Java update and real player update not compatable with firefox 6 on Windows 7. Will they still function right?

When i opened firefox today , there were updates but when it tried to update it came back that java and real player updates were not compatable with my firefox. I have Firefox 6. Will these 2 programs still work all right if they are not updated?
I'm sorry I don't know what installed plugins I have. After putting in search it says I have Java 6 Standard Edition Update 26. I have Real Player(tm)(win32), Version 14.0.4 652. Hope that is enough information

I just had a similar issue and I ended having to manually clean up the registry to get Java working again.
I just got a new computer at work and it had Java 7 installed but it turns out an app we need to use at work doesn't work with Java 7, only Java 6.
I uninstalled Java 7 and installed Java 6 but Firefox was not showing the Java plugin as installed. I tried all sorts of things, including uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox and none of it worked. Finally I again uninstalled Java and then I searched for "Java" in the registry and found TONS of entries still in there for Java, including for Java 7. I manually deleted all the entries (WARNING: this is extremely risky) rebooted, then installed Java 6 and now it's working fine.
I really hate it when uninstallers leave stuff behind. It just makes a mess.

  • New VCR/DVD player that connects to antenna input

Sorry! I guess I should clarify this. We have a "screw in" coaxial cable that runs from our antenna into the house. As our TV is newer we don't have a "screw in" coaxial input (only AV cable inputs) so we have to run it through the dvd/vcr players. However, our current player no longer works for anything other than this (doesn't play DVD/VHS anymore) so it is basically like a giant paperweight.  We are looking at replacing this unit, but need the new one to have the screw in option (or be able to purchase another device that has the screw in coaxial option). Otherwise we do not have access to any television channels. Unfortunately I don't know what to look for in either a new player or an additional device. Thank you for your help with this!

I am very confused as to what I need to look for when buying a new VCR/DVD combo. (Yes, I still want to play tapes)   I need it to have a "screw" in connection for my roof top antenna's coaxial cable like the ones picture below. I have tried the plug in coaxials slots (with out the screw in option), and they don't work. But when you go to buy any device they just meniton that it has a coaxial slot. I have heard a lot of different information about what I need to get from an RF Modulator to a Tuner. When I looked at the RF Modulator it appeared to be letting you convert AV cables from a device (dvd player) to coaxial input (older tv model). Please help! • How to connect DVD player to FIOS TV (with standard TV)

The Verizon techs installed my FIOS system. I already have the router, DVR and standard TV connected and working. How do I add a DVD player to the mix?
I found wiring diagrams for my FIOS DVR, but they do not include my configuration. Here is what I found:
    http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSTV/Receivers/Wiring+Diagrams/Motorola+7232+HD+DVR/12763...
The above diagram includes an A/V receiver, which I don't think my configuration includes. The tutorial does not offer a choice of configuration that is just the DVR, standard TV, and DVD player.
Where do I find a wiring diagram that connects my DVR, standard TV and DVD player? Do I have to do anything to the router when I connect the DVD player? Sometimes I see references to set top boxes--are they the same thing as the DVR?
    Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sorry to hear about you trouble.
If you are using a standard TV you need to check the back ports for RCA connections. They are listed as video/audio inputs, with color coding.
From your DVD player use RCA output jacks, yellow for video, red and white for audio
Take other end of RCA cables and connect to TV inputs at the back
Set your TV to what ever input was used for DVD player and this should allow you to see DVD from TV.
I sent you a PM if further assistance was needed.

  • DVD player does not work with latest update

I installed the latest update 10.8.2 and now my brand new Superdrive will not work with new MacBook Pro Retina display.  When I plug in Superdrive and try to start a DVD, it say "DVD quit unexpectedly......"   Took to Apple store and they said it was latest update.  Anyone else with this problem?

    Dear all,
Perhaps you found out yourselves but the latest Software Update, called OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Supplemental Update, solves this issue. I recommend you install it and restart your Mac.
When you insert a DVD in the drive and DVD Player launches, you will be prompted to confirm the region encoding (1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, based on the encoding of the DVD you are about to play). This is normal, and you should confirm it again, even if you did it previously.
Naturally, if most of your DVDs are encoded for one region and you want to play a disc encoded for another region, please remember you may make a limited number of region changes when you play other DVDs, and the last one will be permanent. So, act with caution and sensibility.

There are several remotes for the Mac Pro that will control its DVD player, such as

The Mac Pro can't drive speakers directly. You need powered speaker, ao an amplifier.
