Verizon Turbo Dsl plan with Westell 6100 modem? Help?

So I have a westell 6100 modem and on the 7th I upgraded my bundle i had 1 Mbps for Internet , verizon homephone freedom essentials, and Directv. Since fios is not available were I live. And my new bundle is Verizon Dsl 7.0-1 Mbps turbo plan, verizon essentials and directv for $115.00. My question is will my modem provison the speed correct? will it still work? Or do I have to buy a new modem? Thanks!.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

If you have been using the 6100 previously then the modem should sync to the new speed automatically.  If yareou still using an old style flat phone cable from the jack to the modem it may not be capable of the faster speed.  The round tan colored cable which originally was supplied with the modem would be the one to use.  I moved up recently from 3 to the turbo 7.1 via ASDL2plus and found that Verizon at my location has capped the speed at about 5.5.  Their out is to say speeds up to 7.1.

  • Linksys router no longer works with Westell 6100 modem

    Hi all,
I came back after a 3 month work absence (and many days power outages, according to the neighbors), to find that my system can no longer connect to the internet using the Verizon Westell 6100 modem to a Linksys wrt54G router to 2 PCs!
I reset the Westell modem and directly connected the PC to it and THAT works okay, but put the router back in the mix (so I can connect my other PC) and nothing works!
I have read on this forum about 'Bridgeing" the Westell modem but nothing about setting up the router.
Can someone PLEASE give me explicit instructions on how to:
1.)  set up the Westell modem in this "Bridge" mode,
2.)  Set up the Linksys router to work with the modem again??
3.)  Tell me why the old setup no longer works, did verizon change something for this modem?
Thank you VERY much for your help in this matter!
    SUE  ;>)

the router has two connections.  one is called a WAN and that is a wide area network, and it means the internet in your case.  and one is called a LAN, local area network.
what you saw means - that the way you connect to your internet is through PPPoE, a username and a password.
and then way your LAN connects is DHCP,  how all of your local computers connect.  This is important, because after you bridge the westell, you will be setting your Linksys up for PPPoE connection, and NOT DHCP.      if you don't do this step, then you will never connect.
that is fine, and normal.  if you follow the instructions at the link provided - you will be able to connect real easily.
you will want to bridge the westell just follow the instructions for "If your Westell uses the red and black Verizon firmware:"

  • AE & Verizon DSL with Westell 6100 Configuration Settings Question

    Hello,
Has anyone configured their Airport Extreme with Verizon DSL using a Westell 6100 modem in the last few months? I'm wondering if you have any particular tips or have a set of screen shots of the process. I'm walking my mother through the process remotely and having some issues. Any help would be appreciated!
I'm specifically wondering whether I have to set the modem into bridge mode first, then use the AE to log into Verizon service via PPoE? Do I need to call Verizon & tell them my AE's MAC address first?
    Thank you,
    Chris

Is there an "Airport Extreme User's Guide"? When I look at the manuals available for download under Apple's support page for Airport Extreme and Airport Express, I see a "Airport Extreme Card User's Guide," but not one for those of us with Airport Extreme base stations. Am I missing something?
My Verizon DSL (also via Westell 6100 DSL modem, just like Chris') works fine with my desktop, but when I power up a G3 iBook, I have to wait forever for it to boot if it's in range of my home network. I'm trying to fix that problem, so I'm wondering if I need to reexamine the way my DSL modem and base station are configured, just like Chris.

  • Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 modem/router, and Airport Extreme

Useful info so you won't have to go through what I did.
Verizon ISP using the Westell 6100 modem/router & Airport Extreme.
The Westell 6100 was configured during installation as a modem and router with a direct connection to the Mac. You can actually connect Airport Extreme at this point with an ethernet connection to the Westell and it will work, but you can't do any of the sharing things (remote login, personal web sharing, etc.) To do those things the Westell needs to be in the Bridge mode. In a nutshell, you have to edit the Westell's VC configuration to establish Bridge mode, and disable its DHCP server. Then you have to set up the Airport to connect using PPPoE using the Account Name and Password from Verizon.
    1. With the Westell connected directly to the Mac, access the device at 192.168.1.1.
    a. Under VC Configuration the first of seven configurations should already be enabled as VPI 0, VCI 35 using PPPoE. Edit that one and change it to Bridge mode.
    b. Under DHCP configuration, disable the DHCP server. You can also do this under the Private LAN Configuration page. If at the latter, do not attempt to disable the Private LAN (it won't let you anyway). Verizon tech support kept insisting I had to disable the Private LAN, which caused a great amount of anguish!
    c. Before leaving 192.168.1.1 (you won't be able to access it again once the Airport is connected and configured) make sure you know your ISP account name and password. This was assigned during my setup procedure with Verizon, a random selection of letters and numbers.
    2. Now hook up the Airport WAN to the Westell's ethernet port and the Mac to the Airport LAN. Fire up Airport Admin Utility.
    a. Under the Internet tab, select Connect Using PPPoE.
    b. Configure PPPoE using the Verizon Account Name.
    c. Change password to the Verizon account password.
    3. Restart and that's it.

Thank you for your post. When I moved to another home, Verizon sent me the Westell 6100 and I had been having trouble staying connected to the Internet with my Airport. Last night, I loss wireless access and the Airport status in the menu bar read "Looking for a PPPoE connection". Verizon customer support was able to get me back online, albeit with only a direct Ethernet connection between my iBook and the 6100.
I found your post and followed your instructions. Now all the iBooks in our household are back online via the Airport. Thank you very much!

  • Replacing Westell 6100 modem with Netgear Genie

Good day. I'm replacing Westell 6100 modem with a Netgear Genie. I need the following data to complete hookup. Thanks.
    Netgear Broadband ADSL2+ Modem (DMP111SP)
    IP Address
    Subset Mask
    Default gateway
    Preferred DNS Server
    Alternative DNS Server

Since you're plugged into the Westell, use http://192.168.1.1/ to log into the modem. From there, see if your modem shows something along the lines of "Routed Bridge" mode or if it shows "PPPoE" as the connection type. If PPPoE, follow the post I mentioned above. The same goes with Routed Bridge mode. Worst case scenario, call Verizon and have them ensure your Westell is configured correctly if you cannot get online with the Westell, and from there we'll see how the Netgear needs to be configured.
Also, what may have happened here is your Netgear's IP address could have changed. You will want to open up a Command Prompt Window (Start > search for the program "cmd.exe" or go to Start > Run > enter in cmd.exe) and run the command ipconfig. Default Gateway should give the IP of the router you're attached to in a home network.

  • Successful DSL Setup With Westell 6100G and Linksys WRT54G Router

After a week of searching I finally figured out how to get DSL setup with my Linksys router.
All I could get out of the Westell > Linksys router configuration was DSL downloads limited to less than 0.2 Mbps.   No matter what I did on the router settings that was it.    I had a second eHome router that easily configured and achieved the 1.0 Mbps download speeds so that confirmed Verizon and the Westell modem were not the issue.
So what's wrong with the Linksys router configuration?    I had the Linksys WRT54G router Version 5.   Checking the firmware it was the original release of 1.0.0.   (See your routers instructions which can be downloaded from Linksys for how to check your firmware).   I downloaded the latest firmware version for this router model and version number.    Following the Linksys instructions I flashed the latest firmware 1.02.8.   Now I had an updated modem ready to be configured for DSL.
Assuming you already followed Verizons instructions to set the Westell modem to bridge mode setup your router to work with it.
Step 1: Go into the modem typing its address... Default 192.168.1.1   leave the ID blank and the default password is admin.
Step 2: Go to the Basic > Setup screen.
Step 3:  Select PPPoE and the screen menus will change
Step 4:  Enter your Verizon ID  (exclude @Verizon.net)
Step 5:  Enter your Verizon Password.
Step 6:  Go to the bottom of the screen and hit Save.   Wait and the router will indicate it was saved.
That's it.  All you need are the three entries above to get it working.   Turn off the PC, Router and Westell.   Turn on the Westell, then the router and then boot the PC.   It should work at this point.    I now get the full DSL speed for both downloads and uploads.
The bottom line....check you router, especially the older models for updated firmware before you give up on it.

Glad top see you found a configuration for your Westell and Linksys to function.  Thanks for posting resolution.

  • Linksys WRT54GL stopped working with Westell 6100

... it did really well for about 10 days, since I got the router.
I setup everything per »Verizon Online DSL FAQ » http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13600
    Which is:
Modem -> VC config -> Bridge mode on
-> DHCP config -> Disable DHCP
Router -> Setup -> PPPoE mode
    -> CenturyTel login and password
    -> Status -> Connect
I think, but cannot recall 100% that in the meanwhile I changed the way that IP is assigned on PC to manual (trying to network PC and Laptop).
And it worked (without the filesharing, planned to tweak Samba on my Linux based Laptop), for both my wired PC and wireless Laptop.
As of today morning, Internet lights on both modem and router are off, Ethernet light on modem is blinking.
I thought it has to do with last night thunderstorm but since it didn't work after couple hours, I try the phone and it works. I called CenturyTel support and got lead through the process of bringing back the modem to PPPoE mode, which verified that service is up and modem seems to be fine.
We had to reset the IP assignment to auto. Technician told me to put the modem back into a bridge mode and said goodbye, probably thinking (just like me) that router will work again.
Well, it didn't. No matter what I do, there is no way to get the router to connect to Internet.
I understand it's shared Lunksys/CTL problem. Is the 2 year old modem to blame (I am using it right now, wired directly to PC) or 10 days old router just took last breath?
    Or else?
    Edit:
    - I called CTL support twice, have gone as far as they could show it on their side (putting modem into the bridge mode).
    - I called Hindi-based Linksys support two times also. Really long waiting times and just regular per-book answers with knowledge base around mine. Which obviously isn't enough. They of course tried to blame it on the modem.

Thanks for help but the linked article didn't bring too much new.
I have XP Pro PC that runs regular wired connection to the router and then Laptop that connects wirelessly with router.
Both are down since router can't get PPPoE login through the modem. It was just fine for 10 days and got broken down without warning.
    Which could be:
    - some bad settings that eventually led to IP conflict
    - router is bad
    - modem is bad
I am using modem right now so it's likely that its good.
Router sometimes go bad so its a possibility.
First option - sure, my good settings could have worked well only until something crashed them.
The question is how do I fix it or is a return / replacement (and I am not sure if I want another Linksys since it is what it is).

  • Time Capsule: Port Forwarding Issue and DHCP with Westell 6100g Modem

Ok two issues as of right now, but more down the road i think... Anyways, number one, i would like to be able to backup my computer using time machine and my time capsule.. Right now it works properly when inside the local network, was wondering if there was a way to backup when outside the network... i travel a lot and always have my macbook pro with me.. Also, i have a USB hard drive connected to the usb port on back of time capsule but its not showing up anywhere... is that only for printers??? that's not such a big deal, but would be nice to have access to that hard drive from multiple computers... OK so part two of my issues is, i have a WESTELL 6100g modem for DSL verizon service, which is crappy, but that's besides the point, it is a modem/router, so i have the time capsule connected directly to that westell.. the westell only has one Ethernet port, so that's wired to time capsule and then my computers are connected wirelessly and wired through the capsule. It seems that the westell is distributing the IP's and is controlling the port forwarding and what not.. I have tried a few things to give control to the time capsule but that didnt work.. i followed these directions on the web page http://www.dslreports.com/faq/vz/4._Hardware#13600 but it didnt work properly, i couldn't log onto the web at all.. Maybe im doing something wrong.... Anyways, what i really want to do is control everything that the westell is controlling right now with the time capsule... i want to give out IP's and also control port forwarding with the capsule.. Any way of getting that accomplished would be AWESOME... I'm somewhat intelligent when it comes to computers so i should understand everything you are talking about... please help!!!

If you have Back to my Mac (available online service from Apple's MobileMe), then you can perform the following actions with your Time Capsule remotely,
    1. Remote disk access to both the Time Capsule disk and a compatible disk connected via the Time Capsule's USB ports.
    2. Remote configuration.
Also, i have a USB hard drive connected to the usb port on back of time capsule but its not showing up anywhere... is that only for printers???
    Printer, hub, or compatible disk.

Anyway, it could be a setup issue for you, assuming you have Back to my Mac (MobileMe) then the procedure for Time Capsule services is shown in the following Apple support kb

and for USB disk please see the following Apple support kb

  • Airport Extreme with Westell 6100

    The setup:
    Westell 6100 through Centurytel
    Apple Airport Extreme Base Station
    The goal:
To use 6100 as a bridge only and manage all port forwarding and routing through Airport.
    The problem:
I've set it to bridge and DHCP disable. I then try to do PPOE through my Airport. This disables my net connection. Then Airport Setup says that my IP range conflicts with the WAN IP, regardless of what range I use. Any ideas?

if the airport is only picking up a local IP address as its WAN ip then our westell modem is not truly a bridge.
To rule out an issue with the airport connect the westell in bridge mode to your mac and run the PPPoE client on the mac and see if that connects.

  • Using WRT610N router with Westell 327W modem/router on Centurytel

I have DSL with Centurytel and have a Westell 327W modem/router installed.  Can I install and use a WRT610N router with this setup to get a faster wireless connection?

Both the wireless router can work together...You need to cascade both the router.

  • Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 Modem and Linksys router

If anyone is having a hard time getting these three to work together to get on-line, I know your pain. I've spent the better part of two days trying to get these devices to talk to each other. After hours spent trying different combinations and little to no help from Verizon and Linksys I have finally gotten my DSL up and running through my Linksys router. I post this in hopes that someone doesn't spin their wheels like I have been doing over the past few days. Here's what I did to get them to work:
    1. Reset both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    2. Unplug the router and the modem
    3. Connect an ethernet cable from your Apple to the Westell modem and power it back on
    4. Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser of choice. The username should be "admin" (w/o the quotes) and password should be "password" (again no quotes)
    5. It will ask you to update your username and password
    6. Under the CONFIGURATION heading select VC CONFIGURATION and click on EDIT
    7. Make sure that both PROTOCOL and MODE are set to BRIDGE
    8. Click on SET VC and then click OK when asked if you want to reset for new configuration to take affect
    9. Once again power off the modem for about a minute then power it back up
    10. Login again with the login you created above and go to the STATUS/ABOUT column and write down the MAC address
    11. Set it to DHCP OFF and change the Private Lan Modem IP to 192.168.2.1. Write this down and keep it so you can access your modem in the future.
    12. Save the settings. You will lose communication with the Westell at this point. Once again, power down the modem for about a minute.
    13. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem into the Internet port on the Linksys router and then connect your Apple to the first ethernet spot
    14. Turn on both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    15. With your browser (Safari or Firefox) type in 192.168.1.1. Under SETUP go to MAC ADDRESS CLONE and enter the MAC address you wrote down for your Westell modem earlier and then save the settings
    16. Make sure you are in DHCP mode and not PPPoE
    17. Save, exit, and you should be on-line
That was a lot more difficult than it had to be. I certainly didn't get this from the support folks from Linksys or Verizon...a lot of trial and error and investigating on-line. I hope this saves you from the headaches I experienced.

    Feedback for Linksys:
In the Linksys Help system "Easy Answers" there's the question "How can I set up a Linksys router with DSL Internet?" This is what I used to try and solve my Internet connection problem.
The Answer says "Most DSL providers use Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) ..." and goes on to explain how to set up the router for PPPoE. However, my service (AT&T/Yahoo high speed internet) uses DHCP. That meant I spent several frustrating hours trying to get it to work with PPPoE.
The Answer would have been better if it first explained how to tell if you have PPPoE or DHCP (see the reply from vness above, it's an excellent explanation), and then linked to the appropriate setup instructions.
    Thanks for the help!!!!

  • PS3, Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 Modem, WRT54GSv. 6 - Can't Get NAT Type 2...

    Hello everyone--
I just received a PS3 for Christmas. I connected it to my network wirelessly via my WRT54GS router and everything worked fine. After a connection test everything was found successfully, UPnP was available, & the NAT Type was 2. The only issue I noticed would be that I would be logged out of the Playstation Network a few minutes after I would turn on the PS3 or randomly during/after playing a game. However, I would simply just log back in and everything would be fine.
The problem began the next day because suddenly when I ran an internet connection test on my PS3, UPnP came up as being not available and the NAT Type was now 3. Now, I'm not exactly sure what could have possibly happened overnight as nothing was changed and the settings all remained the same.
My setup is as follows: I have my desktop computer wired to the router and my laptop, nintendo wii, & ps3 all connected wirelessly. My modem is in bridge mode  and the internet connection type is "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" as my area does not support PPPoE.
Basically I am posting to see if anyone has any suggestions on what I need to do to get my UPnP back to available & NAT Type back to 2. If there is any other information I need to post that would be helpful in finding a resolution to my problem, then please let me know.
I look forward to hearing a response from someone. Thanks in advance for your time and help.
     - Steve

Access setup page .... look for MTU size ... change it to 1365 ...click save settings ....
Click security tab ..... uncheck Block WAN request ....click save settings ....
If possible upgrade also the firmware of the router .....

  • Using an Airport Express to extend a Verizon wireless DSL router? (Westell)

We recently switched our internet service over to Verizon DSL. The router they gave us is a wireless router. We have the Verizon network setup for both our computers to access it, but I wanted to use our Airport Express to connect our printer wirelessly and to extend the network. However, I can not get the Airport Express to join the Verizon network. Can anyone help with this? All I am getting is the blinking amber light on the Airport Express. I know the Verizon Westell router has its own WEP settings, which I have tried to give to the airport express, but it does not seem to be working. Very confused!!

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Westell router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few non-AirPort brands that are known to work are:
    o Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    o Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    o BT Voyager 2091
    o Netgear WGR614 v6
    o Buffalo WGR-G54
