Very slow behaviour in Java3D

Question

Hi. I have a problem with behaviours.
I am modeling a scene where I have to respond to key presses to move around and also read from sensors.
I use the standard KeyNavigatorBehavior to move and it works fine as long as the second behaviour for polling the input device is disabled.
This is how I set the input reading behaviour to wake up:
this.wakeupOn( new WakeupOnElapsedFrames(0));
The actual work it does is very limited so I really don't think it's a processor issue, even if the behaviour is woken up very often (I'm on a 3 GHz machine with 1 GB ram). If I take out all of the code from the behaviour except for the waking up part it still blocks the KeyNavigator. Similarly, if I set the behaviour to wake up every 100 frames, the keys work perfectly in the meantime then at the point where the behaviour is invoked things grind to a halt.
Any idea what could be causing this? I have tried setting the "passive" flag to both true and false and it does nothing.

To be more clear, here's the code of my behaviour class. Like I said, the only other thing I use is the standard KeyNavigator code:
