Very slow DSL

HI , I am having a big problem with my DSL internet , I switched to Verizon DSL since 2005 and the speed during the last year was very slow until it became very very slow recently, I call Verizon on 08/17 to check if they have faster connection , They offered 3M speed  internet  so I switched and it suppose to be ready at the same day ,when I got home at that day I found no internet at all , I called the tech and after long time waiting and testing they said the router is no good we have to send you new router , I received the router and connected to the phone line and I have internet , But it is slower than my old speed !!
I called back the tech and she did more tests then scheduled an appointment for a tech. To check the line in my apartment on 08/24 form Pm to 4.00 pm, no one showed yesterday I called back to check ,the lady said I will check and call you back and she did not , Today the speed on the internet in the morning .0009  /0.02 done by Verizon speed test website …
What is my next step; every time I call it takes me 15-20m to talk to a human.

#1 Please post the modem stats, from the modem combo.
I am not sure where this is located in your modem combo, it might be at System Monitoring -> Advanced Status -> Transciever Stats
#2 Is Wireless in the modem combo, enabled?
#3 If so to the question above, what level of wireless security is it set to ( WEP / WPA ) ?

  • Very slow DSL for 3 days now

What's up with the DSL in Pennsylvania, my internet DSL has been very slow. Have the model 6100g modem.. and the lites just keep flickering, constant loss of internet connection, about every 10 minutes. This sux, was using a wireless modem,UN hooked that and still no connections, have to keep turning off the modem.. What gives?

I'm also in pennsylvania and have been experiencing similar issues.  Nothing really in the log files.  I play an MMO, and my ping will jump and there will be some packet loss.  I did a trace to google and got this

  • Very slow dsl...dial up style

Just moved and kept the 1mbps/368kbps plan and it was incredibly slow.
Upgraded to 3mbps/768kbps, and got confirmation it has been upgraded.
Did a speedtest at speedtest.net and some other site and came back 80kbps/373kbps ...that is the same as 0.08mbps/373kbps.
Anyone else solve a problem like this or have advice?
This is almost as slow as dial up.  Slow day and night.
    Thanks,
    Watertown, MA

You need to connect to the router/modem and look at the logs. The log will provide information about the line losses and negotiated speed on your DSL connection.
DSL performance is very sensitive to the quality and length of the copper pair that connects you to the Central Office.
In simple terms you need to isolate the problem to either the PC or the Modem/router. If the Modem/router has negotiated something close to the 3mbps/768kb, then the issue is your PC. If the negotiated DSL rate is much lower than 3mbps/768kb either Verizon hasn't properly provisioned the service, or the copper pair between your premises and the Central Office isn't very good.
Also make sure that the modem/router is NOT connected through a DSL filter, and make sure the other devices (telephones, faxes) are connected through a DSL filter.
I assume your PC is connected via an Ethernet cable, as opposed to wireless.
If you are connected via wireless, there may be someone else nearby using the same Wi-Fi Channel for something else, and simply changing the channel on the router may fix the problem.Wi-Fi operates in unlicensed spectrum, so other services such as cordless telephone may operate in the same band. If they happen to operate on the same channel, neither will work very well.

  • Ridiculously slow DSL

constantly very slow DSL, esp with my wireless items...so wasted almost $100 buying cat5e cables to reach these items and still horrible connection.  Speedtest just run shows 1.69mbps download and .58 upload speeds while using the cat5e cable, yet I am paying for 3-7mbps.  I NEVER get better than maybe 2.5 to 2.8, have constant buffering issues when trying to stream even little video clips. what is the problem and when will something be done about this poor service? guess I might as well return all these cables since they have not helped at all...

yea, take the cable back. That's not your problem. I've been having exceptionally slow speeds in past couple of days with intermittent connection drops and from what i'm seeing on the posts I'm not the only one. I've been with Verizon since they first offered broadband and only once was it trouble with the copper to the house (neighbor cut the line). Excluding a fault with the copper inside your home (low probability unless you've futzing around wit it) or the copper from your home to the pole, or the copper from the pole to the central office (higher probability if they have been futzing around with it or of course an act of God) the problem is at their end. I've been through the merry go round with their tech folk 99% of which are reading off a script, no real help there. The only way to get resolution is to be patient and hope it resolves itself, not the best option considering you're paying for a level of service. The alternative is to be persistent and keep opening tickets. Always insist on speak to a supervisor, threaten to go elsewhere (if that's an option). The operative word is persistence. Here's usually how it goes-- you are rolling along with satisfactory service (that's relative, not going there) and now your service has turned to crap. You call V and they do a line check and say that it's fine. What does that tell you, it's at their end but won't fess up to it. You did something to your configuration, it's your fault. They'll walk you through a script checking this and checking that. Must be your router, (a favorite) so they'll offer to sell you a new one. If you're lucky they'll give you a free one to appease you for the moment. And each time you call them it's the same merry go round. That's why you need to speak to someone higher up the chain preferably a tech supervisor. Those below are clueless. My OS is Linux and I run a wrt router so I'm familiar with the equipment on my end (BTW - they can't help you unless you're on Windows, i'm not a Mac user so I don't know what the deal is there). When nothing can be done for you remotely they schedule to have a lineman come out. A real nightmare for those of us who have real 9-5 jobs. Again, the trick is persistence, that's all you have if it's just you. When the fault affects a geographic area (say section of NYC) they are more inclined to remedy the problem. Hang in there, good luck.

  • Very Slow Speed & BT seem unable to fix

    Hi All,
First time post and would very much welcome anyone’s view on my problem.
Apologies if it’s a bit long!
The problem: Very slow download speed, going as low as 50kbs. Prior to this issue my download speed was around 4.5Mb but since this issue started it has reduced to around 1Mb first thing in the morning which decreases as the day goes on.
The results of a previous BT speedtest were Download Speed 190Kb / DSL connection rate 6.62 Mb (Downstream) / 448Kb (Upstream) IP Profile for line 5Mb
(All tests were carried out using a single Windows 7 desktop pc with a wired connection to a home hub 2)
6 Feb – Contacted BT to advise of speed problem and was informed that they would need to run a test which would take 48 hours.
8 Feb – Contacted BT to be advised it could be a problem with the home hub or network not passing signal. Further line test carried out and was told that it is not a fault within my property. They would pass problem to Network Faults Dept so they could reconfigure the line and they would call me 9 Feb.
9 Feb – BT Called and following a search on this site I mentioned that the noise margin seemed high (13.3dB/26.0dB)  He said it should be 6dB and put in a request for it to be lowered and was told the speed should increase by 11 Feb. (Noise margin was under 6dB by the next day)
10 Feb – BT (Level 2 Help) called to advise the broadband connection is in the stabilisation phase.
11 Feb – Called BT to advise no change in speed. They run test and now say fault is inside the house and an engineer would be required. Oh and it would be a chargeable visit. I queried this as the advisor I spoke to 8 Feb said it was not a problem inside the house but his response was that it was originally a network fault, which was fixed, but now it is a problem inside the house. Sounds Fishy!
Call was transferred to the department that arrange engineers and to cut a long story short it was agreed that it would not be chargeable visit.
13 Feb – BT called to advise an engineer visit 14 Feb
14 Feb – Openreach engineer tested wiring and all was OK. Just to be double sure he replaced the master socket to a 2 port type (hub in top port and telephone in bottom) and was told this type does not require a DSL filter. He also changed the Home Hub 2 to a Home Hub 3 and after still no improvement he concluded BT were throttling my broadband. I’m not sure if he reset my profile but said it should start to improve over the next couple of days.
16 Feb – Still no improvement so I called BT again. They wanted to test the line again and it apparently came back with a network fault and it would take another 48 hours. I then asked to speak to a Manager who reviewed my problem history and transferred me to someone in the Network Department. She did a bit of tinkering and the speed went from 200kb to 400kb, then another bit of tinkering and it went to 550kb. At last, i thought, we were making slow progress but since this call, the speed has decreased again to 130kb. She said that I have to wait another 4 days for it to possibly improve and will call me 21 Feb. They keep telling me I have to wait 48 hours here, 3 days there but unfortunately I now have little faith that there will be any improvements in 4 days time. Is this acceptable or am I being too impatient.

  • Very slow internet access..... - interesting issue !

I have 3 computers at home: PC XP, PC Vista and a new imac 24'' since 4 weeks....
As side comment I'm disappointed in Apple... I expected much more… more issues than Vista seems….
    10.4.11 + Safari 3.0.4 + Firefox.
Internet on my Mac is very slow. On the same network (wireless with WEP 128) when I enter a new page on my PC and Mac at the same time it take to the Mac approx 5 time more time to display (safari or firefox)…
On safari I have empty the cash and “reset safari”…still the same….its dam slow for Internet access. I also removed the Wireless encryption but still the same….
Does somebody have a clue what it could be?

The DNS is coming from the dsl provider. Very often your router simply gets the dns automatically. With Leopard, I suspect some of the settings are such that things time out before the dns gets through. What I did was look up what the actual IP number of the dsl providers dns was. I added the IP number of the dns provider to my router. So far that seems to have solved my WiFi delays with Leopard (although that could just be a co-incidence).
Exactly how you add the IP number to a router is router dependent. Mine is a netgear, and you do it through a web page link to the router's IP number (which will be listed in the manufacturer's handbook). Generally something like 192.168.0.1
    Hope that helps.

  • Very slow broadband and connection keeps dropping

Hello, we have been BT customers since August 2013, after previously being Freeola customers for many years.  We live in a very rural area, at the end of the exchange so we are never going to get amazingly fast broadband, we are estimated 1MB.
Previously using Speedtest.net at the beginning of the year we were getting 0.9Mbps, then in May our internet dropped and we couldn't get a proper connection or speed.  We contacted Freeola who after doing some tests, said that we had a copper line failure and to contact BT.  We did this and the copper line failure issue was fixed, an openreach engineer tested the line and we assumed all was fine.  But we were still getting very slow speeds and the connection kept dropping.  So we decided to switch to BT in August, we have put up with the slow speeds and dropping connection for 3 months hoping in vain that once we got a stable line the speed would increase and we would be back to were we expected to be.
When we are using the internet, we very often get "Your connection has been reset" errors within our browsers.
This has not happened, so I have decided to come on to this forum in the hope that we can solve this issue before my hair gets any greyer.  We have a BT Home Hub 4 so we have not got all the stats that previous HH had available.
Also as we are in a rural area our telephone connection is through overhead cables and as said previously we are at the end of the exchange.
Please see below for the information that I have been able to get:

    Hi jacoma,
Sorry to hear that your  having issues with your BT Retail services.
You will either be on the ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service or if your exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded you maybe on the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12/20mbps) service depending on your line quality and length.
However these upto speeds may not be the speeds you will get as ADSL broadband connections are very dependent on the distance from your property to the exchange and the quality of your line. The further away you are from your local exchange the slower your broadband speed will be.
To enable the community to help you please see the advice below:
Please see Keith's help guide here: Helping forum members to help you, it will go through some checks that are needed for us to help you.
    1) Are you in the TEST socket? if not can you please connect to the test socket and repeat steps 2, 3 and 4.
All the below performed in TEST Socket:
    2) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 ,called quite line test, from landline phone. should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
If there is any noise on your line such as crackling, distictive noise when the phone is connected to the TEST socket and doing the quiet line test then you need to report a line fault to BT Retail by dailling 151. Once the crackling or disticive noise has gone then your broadband should slowly recover.
    3) please post adsl line statistics
    4) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtest.btwholesale.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, Ethernet, connection] After Quick Test is done you need to click "Further Diagnostics" to get IP Profile.
    ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
     Then:
     1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
     2) click Settings
     3) Click Advanced Settings
     4) Click Broadband
     5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 1.3)
or http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9118 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 94.1.11)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"
If you have a HomeHub 4 then the majority of the ADSL Stats shown in the previous Hubs will not be there.
for HH4 users you can go to hub manager then select troubleshooting then logs and are look for 2 entries together which will show theconnection speed and noise margin for when your HH4 last sycned with the exchange.
There are more useful links on Keith's website here: If you have an ADSL connection, please select this link

  • WRT54GS VERY Slow Internet?

Well, We bought a router about 3-4 months ago, when my sister got her a laptop and I got a Nintendo DS. About a week ago, the internet on the main computer downstairs (the router/DSL box is RIGHT on top of the computer tower, so it isn't a interference or something problem...) Now, from about 2-9 pm, the main computer (one with box right on top) has the internet loading so it takes about a minute for a page to load, and 20 min for a 1 min video on youtube to load. So obviously, that's a very slow connection. Today, I try my Nintendo DS to test the connection, and even with just 2 bars, as it's upstairs (theres 3 bars total on DS), it was running the normal speed it always does. My sister on her laptop (which is even farther away from the router, on the other side of the house upstairs) says her internet is working perfectly fine.
Anyone know what could be causing this? I have rebooted the router multiple times, upgraded the firmware, and done everything else the automatic support says.

Are you saying that your wireless router is sitting on top of your computer, and that very same computer is connecting to the router wirelessly ?
If so, why don't you just turn off the wireless in your main computer, and connect an ethernet wire between it and your router ?
Also, you really should not keep your router on top of your computer.  Try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.

I recently purchased the 4510L LTE mobile hotspot as it was that or dial up. I have been getting download speeds that generally cap out at about 100 KBps. That seems very slow for this area, with 3G coverage. I am always at 3 or 4 bars of service and am unsure if this is standard for that or if I am for some reason getting incredibly slow internet.

Yes, I have tried to move it around the house and that helped in a very very small way. I just don't think my area is really cut out for this type of service, I recently discovered that there is one company that offers DSL and hopefully I can get that. I luckily still have time on my 14 days and hope that I don't have any trouble returning and canceling my service.
Thanks to the community member for your input.
    Hi MyUnluckyDay,
Have you kept trying to use your mobile hotspot to see if the speeds improved? Are you using a laptop with the connection that has an Anti Virus program running at the time slow speed occurs? If so, please try clearing the cache on your web browser and disable your Anti Virus program and retry using the hotspot to see if this improves the speed of your connection. Speeds can vary depending on what your doing on the connection such as downloading a large application or streaming videos, etc.  Also, there was a software update released on September 1st that can help with the connection issues. Here is a direct link to our website that will provide steps on how to obtain the software update. I hope these suggestions can help with your concerns.

  • Slow DSL bad service

On Wednesday, I called verizon service with very slow speed on my DSL.  For an hour we were resetting the modem and disconnecting the line from the wall. I was instructed by the technicican to type in speed test on google and we went the website, speedtest.net.  I was un able to even download the test.
In spite of this, the tech tried to explain to me that should either upgrade to verison fios, and/or there was something wrong with my computer.
I did a speed test on my own at my.verizon.com the results were this
    .37, and  .27 - download
    .40, and .41 - upload
today, The speed is somewhat bwtter  I did the speed test again (at my.verizon.com). The results are  this
    .94 - download
    .37 - upload
The upload could be better, but the download shows a remarkable improvement
    My question is this,
Can " In-home Agent" or "Virtual Agent" go directly to someone who knows what he is doing?
does "In-home agent" work with DSL ?
Is there another way to speed up the process and get information to a real technician?
    Thank you

  • Software updates download is very  slow

Today I downloaded 2 software updates; OSX 10.9.5 and Safari 7.1.  The download speed was very slow and erratic.  The activity monitor showed that the process "softwareipdated" was receiving data at anywhere from 1 to 25 kbs.  My DSL connection is never very fast but typically receives 130 to 150 kbs.  Other downloading such as streaming music or video has been normal.  Any ideas why this happened and could this be a symptom of some more fundamental problem?

It may not be exclusive to Verizon but considering that Apple updates are severely affected on my system, yet my next door neighbor with Comcast has no problems whatsoever, I am 100% confident that Verizon is playing a role in my woes.  In fact, I updated my wife's iPad to iOS 8 OTA on a relative's Xfinity wifi just to get it completed.  Took me about an hour to complete.  I came back home, less than a quarter mile away to my lovely FiOS and boom, 15-20 hour download estimate on my rMBP to update my iPad Mini (which I'm saving for last or at least until this issue is resolved).  Changing my DNS seemed to work briefly on my rMBP but less than a day later my speeds were back to being slow as molasses. At least I had the opportunity to update both my rMBP and iPad Air before the speed took a nosedive again.  Just wish I had updated the Mini too.  I figured the problem was resolved and I'd get a chance to update it later.
Judging by several posts I found online (links to two examples posted below), I see I'm not alone in thinking something funny is going on between Apple and Verizon.  I won't refute your claim that it is also affecting other providers, because your experience sounds pretty close to mine, but everyone I've encountered with problems in this area has FiOS. Folks around me who subscribe to other ISP's seem fine.  The link below to the discussion on dslreports (2nd link) is particularly telling because I read it after trying various troubleshooting steps and was surprised by the number of people who posted in that thread that had identical issues and troubleshooting experiences as me.  Several people also mentioned that the problem disappeared after they connected to Apple update through a VPN.
I assumed it was primarily on the East Coast because I have relatives in the West and Midwest with FiOS who have not had any issues.
I called Verizon but that was about as useful as your experience.  They didn't even bother pointing fingers.  They simply said "if everything else works then I'm getting what I pay for".  I promptly replied that as an almost exclusively Apple household, I am most certainly not getting what I pay for if I can't upgrade my software, apply security patches or use my Apple streaming devices.  Unfortunately, no one seems interested in fixing the issue, so we're left to find our own solutions.
And that's exactly what I did roughly an hour ago.  Comcast will be out to swap my equipment and service in 14 days.  Problem solved... At least I hope.

  • Internet connection very slow - ISP blames my computer...

    Greetings,
I have DSL connection that has been running very very slow... dialup slow... I use airport, so I unplugged it and connected the ethernet cable directly to the comp - with no results.
I called my ISP, they tested the modem speed, reset the modem & went through all the settings - with no results. The modem speed is fine, so they say the problem is with my powerbook. I've rebooted the computer numerous times, also I recently cleaned up my hard drive (which has been full for months) and I currently have 14gb of free space.
What else can I do? Are there any diagnostic utilities/etc you can recommend?
Thank you in advance for all your help.
    powerbook g4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You actually are close enough to their 3meg down that you can't complain. 2.8meg down and 700kb up is fine, unless it's supposed to be their FIOS that is.
Sounds like it is the site(s) that are slow, like these boards at times.

  • Very slow internet again

Internet is very very slow, I know my location is quite far away from the exchange but this is just silly.
    Just ran a speed test:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 41 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 100-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :1280 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 357 Kbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 448 Kbps
I have tried the obvious, resetting the router, checking the connections, checking for problems in my area and changing the filers but nothing seems to help.
The master socket is Openreach NTE5
    Any help would be good
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi Welcome Your IP Profile has dropped because of a noise issue on your line causing the exchange equipment to see your line as unstable normally the profile will rise within a period of 3/5 days providing there are no restarts on your hub all you can do is wait while the exchange equipment restores your profile

  • BB gone very slow ...help please

I live in a rural area, am about 3 miles from the exchange, so I'm used to not having a fast service, however my speed often runs around 1.22Mb/s download and 0.38Mb/s upload. But yesterday it dropped to very slow. I just decided to leave it for 24 hours to see if it sorted itself out. Well it didn't and I'm here now looking for some help please!
I have checked my local exchange, no problems reported.
I have worked through the BT BB Speed Wizard thing.
I did the Speedtester and these are the results

Obviously I'm pleased that it's back to normal but confused as to what caused the problem - 24 hours of extremely slow connection and then it's normal again. ANy ideas?
