VGA/DVI Input

The monitor I use for my PC just went up in smoke, and I'm wondering:
Is there any way I can allow my iMac's display to accept VGA or DVI input? I don't use my PC that often, and the amount I'm willing to invest in a new monitor would only fetch me something mediocre. BAH! I already love my iMac Display and it requires so little desk space...
I'm thinking of something like a USB or FireWire device that acts sort of like a KVM switch, allowing me to switch between my Mac/PC instantly. Could something this simple and useful possibly exist?

Microsoft has this:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopc lient
It works great. A few catches, but nothing major:
1.) have to set the IBM to a static IP on your network and use that as the login
2.) works for free on windows XP Pro. Not sure if they sell the option on the others or not.
3.) This is kinda funny, you have to have a password on your user and login, then the network shows up and the computer works.
Basically you need to borrow an older IBM CRT (most people give them away) to set it up and then you can use the mac. I just set a standard password I can easily type in.
In fact, it is like 100000% better than virtual PC for mac, because it actually runs the IBM and just transmits the info through the network (most are atleast 100Mbs)
Hope that helps,
Brian

  • No VGA or DVI input signal

I recently found my old HP Pavilion a6228x after 2 months of not using it, and hooked it up to my  w1907 monitor with a vga cable.  It says that there is no VGA or DVI input signal, with the black arrow pointing at DVI. I can't switch from DVI to VGA because everytime I press the menu button, the screen will say "Monitor going to sleep." The monitor works fine with my laptop and the same vga cable. Help?

    Hi,
Since the monitor and cable are known to be good then make sure that you are plugging the video card into the video card's VGA port if a a video card is installed.  If the video card has a DVI port then use a native DVI cable between the monitor and the video card.
If there is a video card in your PC then try reseating it (remove and replace). If that doesn't work then remove the video card and plug the VGA cable into the motherboard's VGA port.
Only connect one active video feed to the monitor.
Try a monitor reset. Unplug the monitor’s power cord and hold down the monitor’s power button for 30-60 seconds. Plug the monitor back in and power it up.

  • The difference between VGA, DVI-D and ADC?

    Hi.
The difference between VGA, DVI-D and ADC and which should be used with a T244 widescreen monitor into a Quicksilver G4 with a GeForce2 MX nVIDIA (0x10de) card. What's a good upgrade card if the above is not good enough?
    Thank you for your input.

  • Can I use a VGA/DVI-D monitor to a new 2014 Mac Mini?

My wife's PC just died (it was a cheap 300 pc that lasted probably 5 years.
She basically emails, web surfs, looks at pictures and plays candy crush on Facebook so she doesn't need anything too high end.
I was thinking of getting her the basic 2014 mac mini but I have a VGA/DVI-D monitor (an older Dell) and it fits perfectly on her desk.
Can I somehow hook up a new mac mini to either the DVI-D or VGA input?
If not, what is the best monitor to get HDMI or should I look into a thunderbolt monitor?
    Thanks,

Yes. You will have to purchase one of the following adopter:
    - HDMI to DVI and use the Minis HDMI output
    - Mini displayport to DVI adopter and use one of the Minis Thunderbolt ports
    - Mini displayport to VGA adopter and use one of the Minis Thunderbolt ports
I would use the monitor's DVI input over the VGA input

  • TV & monitor connected via DVI to VGA & DVI cable. Wont display

I have my TV & monitor connected to my mini via DVI(input) to> VGA(output) & DVI(output) splitter cable. I cant get both tv and monitor to work at the same time only one or the other. How can I get this to work?
Note: I dont want a continuous display, I just want one to show the same as the other. If there both plugged in why dont they both work?

The answer to your question would require having a block diagram of the mini's graphics sub-system. If the DAC (digital-to-analog converter) behind the VGA port is just driven from the same output as the TMDS transmitter behind the DVI port, then I agree it would be possible that both could output the same screen simultaneously. But if the VGA and DVI ports are treated as seperate channels all the way back to video memory, then likely one would be prioritized over the other, only one could be active, and they would not be able to output simultaneously.
Another potential problem is that TVs and computer monitors generally want to run at very different formats and they require different signal types to be happy. A TV will want an interlaced output whereas a computer monitor will not. And a TV will want a very low resolution, like 640 x 480, whereas a computer monitor will be happiest at a much higer resolution.
I hope for you that someone else has this working and chimes in with some practical advice. I try to avoid making posts where I have no practical advice to offer and only bad news, but in this case I thought you might want to know about some potential barriers to success. Good luck.

  • VGA/DVI cable - wanting to use two monitors.

I got a VGA/DVI cable to connect the VGA port on my LCD TV to the DVI port on my desktop computer. I'm trying to use 2 monitors on my computer which has both a VGA and DVI port. My regular monitor was already on, and the computer detected the TV as a monitor but the TV wouldn't detect a signal. I had the TV on the VGA/PC setting. The cable was a return item so it might be defective. I was wondering if there's anything else I could try to get it to work?

My computer's DVI port doesn't allow for the contacts above and below the flat blade like the DVI-I and DVI-A connectors in the picture. The cable that I got does have those contacts.
Ooooooh.  So your computer may be one of the rare animals that doesn't have a DVI-I output, only DVI-D.
Since your TV has HDMI inputs, this is the way to go.  Get a DVI-to-HDMI cable.  It will provide higher quality than VGA and is USUALLY easier to use, I've never had video timing/resolution support issues with HDMI.  (However, every computer I own has an Nvidia graphics card - the story may be different for ATI or Intel graphics!)

  • Two Monitors that need the DVI inputs...

Has anyone tried to use 2 VGA-DVI adaptors with their MacPro at the same time?  The inputs are designed so that I can't properly insert the two DVI inputs at the same time.  The two inputs on the back of the computer are too close together. I've forced them in but one of my screens constantly flickers because it's not connected properly. This seems like such a basic design issue... Anyone know of a different adaptor that is maybe slightly less wide on the DVI side?  Or another work around? Thanks

Sorry maybe I am not being clear.
I have a MacPro that I am trying to connect 2 monitors (screens) to.
Each monitor (screen) has a VGA cable that attaches to it.
My MacPro has 2 DVI ports in the back,
Hence, I bought 2 of these adaptors:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8754G/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
In theory, everything is great, the monitors do communicate with the computer via the adaptors.  The problem is, the two ports are too close together on the computer, and I can't fully plug in both adaptors at the same time.  My solution has been to squeeze them in, and I get an image on both screens, but neigher adaptor is fully screwed in, so my image flickers.
Thanks for any help.  I'm starting to think that my MacPro is a bootleg because I feel like someone else would have had this problem before and I can't find anything about it...

  • Graphics Card/DVI Input help...

    Hello,
Is someone could help me that would be great. I have a monitor that suppirts both VGA and DVI inputs. I want o use a DVI input but my computer only supports a VGA output, so I need a new graphics card. Could someone please recommend a good graphics card that would be compatible with my computer. My computer is a Gateway GT5674 with a AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core Processor 2.20 GHz, 3GB RAM and 32 Bit Operating system. Right mow it has a NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce430 graphics card. Thanks

upgrade with the 8000 series graphics, your computer i think comes with a 300watt power supply so you shouldn't need to spend any more money. i think the highest you can go is 8600gt/gs for the best quality.
if you don't play games 8400 is enough. even for high definition viewing.
if you play games, go with 8600gt/gts.
if you play games and want to go with the best picture possible, go with the 8800gt/gts (if you can still find one) u can find those really cheap now and they're actually like the best graphics card you can get for the money.
if you don't have a budget limit, you can get the gtx260/280 and upgrade the power supply to 600 watt or more.

  • Iphone cable to vga, dvi or s-video

i am building a video installation and i would like to run the video off my iphone, but the projector that was donated only has an s-video, vga, dvi-d and single video output. the budget it blown, so i cant afford a new projector, does anyone of a cable that can connect from iphone to vga or dvi.
    appreciate the help
    /brian

I don't know of any off the top of my head, I'd have to look around. If I find anything I'll let you know. Even if you could get an adapter for iphone to vga, dvi-d, or s-video, you won't have any sound, those formats only support video.
One way you could do it is by connecting a computer to it with iTunes installed that is connected to the projector. You can then hook your iPhone up to it, or if you have a wireless network installed you can download the remote application for the iPhone to control your iTunes library remotely if you are connected to the same Wi-Fi network the computer is on.

  • Mini to DVI Input on DLP TV

I've read this entire forum and had to try this myself. I went to Tweeter with Mini in hand and plugged it into a WD 62327 Mitsubishi 61" DLP TV (direct DVI input). The picture was excellent except for the top & bottom of the screen were cutoff. I could reduce the resolution of the Mini to its lowest setting and the entire screen was visible but obviously the picture was inadequate. I've seen this mentioned here but can't find a solution, I want to buy this TV but I need the mini connected and perfect (well, at least complete). Any ideas?
PS: Kudos to Tweeter, they had no problem with my experiments and were interested in the results.

Yes, a common but unfortunate problem that rear projection televisons, no matter the technology, overscan the image to make sure the video border is guaranteed to be beyond the physical edge of the screen. This creates big problems when connecting a computer where you expect to see all the pixels, even those at the extreme edge.
Most DLP televisions that I am aware of do not have a user setting to control the amount of overscan. I believe this applies to the Mitsubishi model you have mentioned as well. Unless there is a service setting for overscan inside the TV, the fix will have to come from the computer side.
I am pretty sure that if you make a connection to a televsion using S-video (requires an adapter sold by Apple in the case of the mini), you will then have control of overscan by means of a simple yes/no flag within Display Preferences. Better still, if you install ATI Displays 4.5.6 you will have a more granular level of control of overscan, but again, only over an S-video connection. ATI Displays does have a provision for adjusting overscan on DVI attached displays, but only for "some" graphics cards, and the mini doesn't seem to be one of them.
As far as finding a solution in other third party software, I am not optimistic. There are at least two good programs that allow you to set custom timings, but as far as I know, neither one of them allows you to control overscan on a digital display. Some people will say that altering what are called "porch" timings during video blanking will allow you to control the amount of overscan. While I agree that altering porches will have that affect on an analog, magnetically deflected system as in the case of a traditional TV, they do not work in the same manner for a digital device that is clocked. I'm not calling people liars that have claimed success using this technique, but I think those that have had success have just been lucky.
I realize I'm not offering a solution, or even hope for one. The best I can say is stay away from rear projection TVs if you aim to use them much with a computer connection, unless perhaps the TV is the second head and the primary head is a computer montior.

  • Dual VGA \ DVI output on Dynadock??

    Hello
We have recently got the DVI \ VGA Dynadocks U10 and have got all the software installed
In the box was a note stating that with windows XP it is not possible to set an external monitor to the primary screen and then set the notebook monitor to the secondary
This is fine, however I have got a VGA and a DVI monitor connected to the dynadock
Is it possible to have the notebook display turned off and have the VGA as the primary monitor and the DVI as the secondary?
Everything I have tried so far has failed

    Hello,
it is not possible to use both (VGA + DVI port) at the same time.
You can use either a VGA or DVI monitor with the dynadock but you can connect the VGA monitor to the computer directly.
    best regards
