VGA to Component Video

Can anyone help, I've acquired a 500 Mhz iMac and would love to mirror the display on my TV. Unfortunately the scart socket on th back of my TV is taken up with other stuff (satellite and DVD) but I do have Component Video still available. Is it possible to find a cable to go from VGA to Component, or would it be better to go from VGA to DVI and then to Component?
I've searched Google, but am bewildered by the choices available. Can anyone provide so useful links?
Thanks,
Lee

VGA to component makes more sense (and is probably less expensive). VGA is analog and so is component. DVI is digital. There is no sense in going from analog to digital and back to analog.
But I've never tried such a cable on a Mac's VGA output, so I'm not saying it will definitely work.

  • IMac VGA to HDTV via component video?

I would like to connect an iMac Snow to a HDTV to display photos. Will it work to simply connect the two with a VGA-to-component video cable (price: about $20), or does the process require a VGA-to-component converter box (price: about $180-380)?
And if a converter is required, a brief explanation of why (in laymen's terms) would be appreciated.

I have a sharp LCD TV (LC-45GD5U) and I am trying to hook the TV up to my apple cube with a nVidea GeForce FX 5200. The TV has a DVI in, S-Video in, HD component in, and a normal component in. I have tried all of the connections with the TV alone and I can get nothing to work. However, I was able to get the TV to display if I had the TV on the DVI connection and the monitor on the VGA connection and only at a select few square resolutions. The whole point of having the TV connected is to have a bigger monitor so I consider it a waste that I have to have my smaller monitor connected as well and I am about out of ideas. If anybody has any ideas please let me know.

  • How do i stream my iMac screen to a device that accepts component video only

I have a new iMac (2015) and I want to send my screen from my mac to a video switcher called a NewTek Tricaster 40. It only accepts component or composite video input. I want to send my iMac's screen to it in real time so I can incorporate it into my live video productions. I have attempted to use several HDMI to component converters and none have worked. I am using the Kanex Pro HDMI to Component Converter to convert the HDMI out from two HD camcorders to component and sending that into my Tricaster 40. It is seeing the signal just fine and giving me solid HD video. So I attempted to use the same Kanex Pro for the iMac. First I used apple's lightning to HDMI cable then plugged that HDMI into another Kanex Pro HDMI to component converter. No dice. I tried all the component video settings: 1080p 30PsF, 1080 24PsF, 1080i, 720p, 720/30p, 720/24p. None worked

  • Mini DisplayPort to Component Video, is This Possible?

    Hi,
    I have a 2010 model 15" MacBook Pro i5.
I am currently using a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, this video converter (http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-VGA2TV-Computer-Presentation-Converter/dp/B000X3 FAJU/ref=accglance_MI_ai_purchase_similarities_t5), and a standard RCA video cable to connect it to my TV.
My TV also has component video (YPbPr) inputs. Is it possible to output video using the MDP-to-VGA adapter and a cable like this one?: http://www.amazon.com/VGA-Component-High-Resolution-Cable/dp/B000YI24J8/ref=sr18?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1255662264&sr=8-8
Anyone have any experience with MDP-to-component and can tell me what would be needed to achieve this connection?
    Thanks.

I don't believe the adapter you're asking about will work. You need a converter box:

  • Is there a COMPONENT video OUT solution for the iBook?

I am currently using Apple's Video Adapter (mini-VGA to S-Video) to hook up to my widescreen. Let's face it, S-Video *****. I am trying to find a solution that would allow me to get component video out of my iBook and run that into my widescreen.
Is there a VGA->Component Video Adapter available that would work with the mini-VGA -> VGA adapter that ships with the iBook? (Or some other way to get a component video signal?)
    Thanks!

    Hi Mactivist,
i am not an expert on this video stuff but I think
you might find this useful. Although the
procedure described is about a Mac Mini (which has a
dvi connector) the guy actually used a DVI-VGA
adapter. Therefore, I believe, the set-up described
    should work for you too.
    -Petra
Unfortunately, iBooks do not have DVI out. What I really need is a VGA to Component video adapter.
And for the person who wasn't sure what a component video cable looks like, this is a cable that has 3 rca-like plugs on it, each one supplies a different color (RGB I think).
So far, I've not found a VGA adapter that can do this unless you are using an ATI video card as the source.

  • VGA, component video or DVI

I have a new Mac Mini (Intel) I am using it as a media center to play DVDs, iTunes videos and MPEG-4 (H.264 converted from DVD).
I tried connecting to DVI but to no avail. Will I lose a lot of quality if I display video VGA or component (via VGA to component adapter)?
Keep in mind I am only using to play videos.

When I plug into the DVI port it just says "No Signal". Used tools like to SwitchresX and DisplayConfigX but to change the resolution, but same result.
Are you sure you have a good cable? Does the same one work with your PowerBook? Are you certain you've pushed the cable in far enough to the back of the Mac mini? My connection (with a DVI to HDMI cable) is very snug.
You say that DVD is ony 720x480, does that mean that it will show the same regardless of the connection (VGA, S-Videop, Component or DVI)?
Having a different connection won't change the original image coming from your DVD. However, the quality of the connection from the computer to the TV will be very different from each of those different connections. S-video, component and composite connections are analog and the digital signal from your Mac mini will have to be converted from digital to analog. So, you might lose some quality there. S-video is better than composite because it includes brightness and color.
DVI will give you a superior connection to all the other options. I would probably try to troubleshoot that problem before attempting other work-arounds like a component video connection.

  • I have a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, then I purchased 3 VGA adapters: a VGA to HDMI, VGA to Component, and VGA to RCA. When I hook them up to my TV (I've tried multiple TVs) they do not detect a display, even when I click Detect Displays.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a solution for this?  The only other Mini DP I found was a HDMI connection.  I want to make sure I can connect to not only TV's via HDMI, Component or RCA, but also projectors (some of which may be older requiring a Component or RCA connection).
    I'm using this Mini DisplayPort:

    VGA to RCA:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Y7T5UU
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

None of the three lower adapters pictured in your post will do you any good with your MBP.
    1. The VGA-HDMI adapter does the reverse of what you want: it yields VGA output from HDMI input. The opposite is not possible; a VGA input does not contain all the information necessary to create an HDMI output. You'll have to get a direct mini-Displayport-to-HDMI adapter instead.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
    2. VGA-Component: Lots of posters here when the MDP-equipped MBs and MBPs first came out tried adapters like this one with no success. What does work with the MDP (and a VGA adapter) is a converter box like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Startech-Component-YPbPr-Video-Converter/dp/B000G6Y0S6
    3. VGA-Composite: This doesn't work with MBPs either. For Composite or S-Video output, you need a converter box like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/PC-To-TV-Video-Converter/dp/B001CJOLBW/ref=pd_cp_e_2
    or this:
    http://www.startech.com/AV/Converters/Video/High-Resolution-PC-VGA-to-TV-Convert er-with-Remote-Control~VGA2NTSCPRO
These converter boxes will work fine in combination with your Apple MDP-VGA adapter.

  • ATI dvi to component video adapter?

I have an older HDTV that only has component video inputs (for HD signals anyway). The macbook pro has an ATI graphics processor, so I took a chance and ordered the ATI dvi to component video adapter:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&tag=replaylink-20&camp= 1789&creative=9325&path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB00068NSZA
I know it doesn't work with the old ati single-link dvi macs, has anyone tried it with the new x1600 based macs?

I have the same problem. I have found out that RGB output from computers is actually RGBHV, which includes vertical and horizontal sync signals. Therefore conversion from Macbook Pro DVI or RGB to plasma component (YPrPb) requires more than just a simple converter like ATI DVI to Component video adaptor, unless Apple can output component video from the video card (that's theoretically possible, but it depends on how Apple integrated the chipset into the motherboard, according to ATI).
The alternative is to use a processor to convert the signal. Key Digital produce a signal transcoder, KT-VTCA3. http://www.keydigital.com/ProductDetail.aspx?categorycode=500&itemno=KDVTCA3&pro ductname=Video%20and%20Control%20Adapters. I have ordered one of these and believe it will work, in lieu of Apple providing a means for outputting component video directly from the Macbook Pro.
This is also available from a seller in UK over ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Key-Digital-ClearColor3-VGA-To-Component-TRANSCODER_W0QQit emZ9700214677QQcategoryZ22610QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem.

  • DVI to Component Video - Compatibility Question

Hello, everyone. I am in a pickle with my soon to be new Mac Mini, concerning the issue of hooking it up to a TV for use as a monitor.
My problem is thus: The TV is a 26" LCD with only a maximum of a Component Video input (no VGA or HDMI), and the Mini has only DVI out. I have seen a cable and/or adapter on the internet that converts DVI to Component, but there is a warning that says the DVI port must support it, or the graphics card must support it. I am wondering if anyone knew if this would work with the Mac Mini. My only other alternative is to use the DVI to Video adapter with S-Video, which on the 1368x768 TV would be inferior. I would prefer component, but am unsure if it would even work because Apple's Tech Specs on the Mini lists only DVI to VGA conversion or the S-Video/Composite adapter, and does not specifically say if it supports Component.
Any support would be GREATLY appreciated, as I have been up for three hours into the wee hours researching all the aspects of my problem, and am unable to figure it out. THANK YOU!
    Duncan
EDIT: Here is a link to the adapter: http://sewelldirect.com/dvivideoadapter.asp
    And cable: http://sewelldirect.com/DVI-to-Component-Adapter-Cable-6ft.asp
That way you can see what I mean about that cryptic warning. All I need to know is if the Mac Mini can support that sucker! Thanks again!

The impression I get is that you might need a more expensive adapter to convert DVI to component.
BTW can you give us the model number of your LCD TV? Thanks!
AppleTV is probably better suited for a component-only TV, though the Mini can certainly do a good job when the TV does have digital or VGA inputs.

I'm looking at cables such as VGA to S-Video or a cheap graphics card with TV out (http://www.ghc.co.uk/acatalog/IndexGraphics_Cards59.html) or a vga/video converter. The pukka solutions seem to cost a lot and make me think it would be cheaper to buy a digibox and burn recorded stuff to DVD? e.g.http://www.savastore.com/productinfo/product.aspx?productid=10279411&catalogname=Savastore&page=productspecification&pid=207

  • Need help - connecting Monitor and TV at same time with component video

I have a mac mini, connected via DVI to a monitor - I bought a DVI splitter to connect the monitor to one port and the tv to the other via a DVI to Video adapter, using component video. When I plug in the DVI to Video adapter, the primary monitor loses its connection and I cannot seem to get the TV to recognize the signal - what am I doing wrong?

In my case, the Barco Cine7 CRT projector I would like to connect the new Mini to accepts a pretty wide variety of analog component video formats, but I cannot find a listing of what the Mini supports. Presuming I use a DVI to VGA adapter and then a VGA to RGB cable, can the mini video card output any one of the following analog component formats:
RGBs or RGsB - R, G and B with automatic sync detection between seperate sync (separate composite sync or with separate hor and vert. sync) or sync on green (composite sync)
RGB with tri level sync - R, G and B with separate tri level sync or with tri level sync on green.
Component video - R-Y, Y and B-Y with separate sync or with compositesync.

  • Component Video from a Mac Pro

Hey All, i have a dual 2.66 mac pro with the Nvidia geforce 7300GT. What i'm trying to do is go from DVI to Component out to my 42" plasma to watch videos from the computer. The methods I've tried have results in an image of the desktop that is purple and flickering. Has anyone else done this? Or what are my other options. The plasma only has VGA, Component, HDMI and composite inputs, and I'd really like to go component so i don't have to take the monitor off the wall and re-wire.
Any light that can be shed would be greatly appreciated.
PS - To give a little back story I had a PC with a component out, so that is what is currently cabled to the tv, but the PC had a meltdown so now i'm converting fully to the MAC that I have had. I also have a HIS Digital x850 PCI-E graphics card from the pc that I have read can be put into the mac, but I'm not sure if i can do this or not. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

No I understand the video card doesn't handle audio, let me tell you my pc setup that I had and you tell me if I can do this on a Mac.
Video wise I had a graphics card with a DVI and VGA port, along with a port that adapted to a component video output (3 RCA Plugs, Red Green Blue). That cable I fed to my 42" plasma into one of its component video inputs.
Audio wise I split the normal audio card output (headphone plug), one went to the computer speakers, the other went from headphone jack to 2 RCA plugs (right and left), which went I fed into the left and right audio channels of the plasma's component input alongside the 3 component video plugs.
Is there any way to do this with my Mac? The reason I really want to component is because everything is already wired and I won't have to take the monitor off the wall. Also, I’d like to go component because it seems like it is easier to get the audio into the monitor using component, as I don't see an audio input if I plug in VGA, and don't see a way to get audio into the chain if I go HDMI.
    Thanks.

  • Component Video to Scart Cable

    Hello
Has anyone in the UK tried to connect an Apple TV to regular TV with Scart?
Component Video to Scart Cables cabled can be bought for around £20, has anyone tried this with success?
    I'd welcome comments.

I'm sure you're correct RC-R - didn't see your post until I submitted my second reply.
I connect via HDMI/Component so have never tried a SCART solution for Apple TV, though if there was a cheap one that worked I'd love to know too.
Keene electronics used to sell a lot of AV converter type things, but I've never used them - just remember they always had big ads in the Hi-Fi/Home Cinema magazines a few years ago.
Personally I think that SCART cables and interfaces are the most confusing, cumbersome and clunky leads I've ever had the misfortune to use in the last 20 years or so. I absolutely hate them!
Sometimes you can be lucky with things and they work - for example about 2 years ago I managed to make a Component to VGA lead for my old projector using CAT5 cable following an online DIY guide - I was lucky and it worked, but in theory conversion electronics would also have been needed apart from plugs and cable, but I'd read that it worked with my particular projector and that was far cheaper than buying the dedicated converter lead/box. Having said that I wouldn't fork out on an Apple TV without being confident it would work with my TV.
    AC
I do think it's a bit of a shame they didn't have an S-Video or composite out on the Apple TV, but it probably boils down to protecting content sold at the iTunes store.
It is unlikely that this kind of cable will work (for
the reasons mentioned in my other post).
A better bet may be the first video signal converter
listed here. I have no experience with this
particular converter (or any such units, being a
resident of the USA) or the company in the link, but
some folks in other similar threads have reported
success with this or a very similar looking device, &
its price from this vendor is indeed much lower than
    previously reported.
The company is located in Kent, England & claims good
phone & email support, which you might try before you
    buy.
