Video as separate library set up question

I have quite a large amount of purchased video on the internal harddrive of my powerbook. I would like to move most of video to a library on an external hard drive, but leave podcasts and music on the laptop. Can I create a new user account on the lap top and move the video to that iTunes library (directing that the iTunes library be located on the external disk). The iTunes account would be the same account but accessed from the separate user account on the on the laptop. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you

You could remove the video files from your library, but do not let iTunes put them in the trash. Now copy them over to a folder on your external drive. Once copied you can remove them from your internal.
Now in iTunes go to preferences and UN-check the option that copies any added media into the iTunes Music folder. Exit from there and now add those videos back to your library. iTunes will add them back in but will NOT copy them over into your internal drive. Instead it will access them from your external drive.
Now go back into preferences and recheck that box so new songs and such still get added into your internal drive location.
In the future, right before you buy a new video, go into iTunes preference and switch the location of the iTunes Music folder to the video folder on your external drive. This only tells iTunes where to add new files to your library and won't change the locations of your existing files. Buy the video and iTunes will download it from the store onto your external drive. When done, switch the location in preferences back to your internal drive location.
Kind of a pain and a manual operation, but you can manage the location of your video files that way.

  • HT201593 The newest version of iTunes deletes all of my iPod Touch 5th gen audible and visual media when I delete or add music or video to my library and add it to my device manually. Why?

The newest version of iTunes deletes all of my iPod Touch 5th gen audible and visual media when I delete or add music or video to my library and add it to my device manually. Why? I guess the question speaks for itself. I have the latest version of iTunes and iOS 8.2 on my iPod Touch.

If it's any consolation i've just had a similar thing happen. Went to add a playlist and it wiped 35 gig of music off my iPod touch 64g in a nanosecond. I've got the latest iTunes and osx but do not back up because i keep different styles of music (and loads of it) in separate libraries and devices which i don't want mixed together. All my stuff is burned from cd so it's not lost for good and i've got a hard drive with the "lost" mp3 music on it but even so it will take literally weeks to prune the tracks for my iPod to be the same again. Why do they make it so difficult to manage your music on these things. I have massive amounts of music on my computer so autofill is a disastrous unusable gimmick to me. The whole thing seems to be aimed at 9 year old kids with about 6 mp3's on their phone rather than serious music lovers (for example accessing EQ is a joke let alone the lack of a manual option). I'm a dj and use apple for that reason but to be honest i'm beginning to wonder why. I'm absolutely livid. The weird thing is that my mac still shows the titles of the missing tunes in the 'on my device' window but as my macbook storage display shows no increase i'm pretty sure it's all gone. Nightmare. I have no confidence in this device anymore and could barely use the previous osx 8.2 anyway. Why they have to change it every ten minutes is beyond me. As the old saying goes 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' but this format just gets more broken every time they update. An absolute disgrace. Why not just drag and drop or delete. No wonder the iPod is said to be a dying device, it's for music, it is not a phone. Not fit for purpose anymore. I can't be bothered to read a massive 'how to use' article every update. Good technology should be easier and more intuitive with each new version. I suppose i'll have to phone apple at my expense to find out what's going on, or maybe that's the whole idea. Very very very not happy.

  • Add  video  clips to library

Most camera shoot video clips now including some DSLRs. So add video clips to library and view video clips. I not talking about adding a new module but I would like to add those Point and shoot AVI files to the library and be able to view them.

After nearly two years of frustration both with LR itself and with the commentary posted by LR developers I am compelled to voice a certain question/complaint. Please understand that I have followed the requests and responses in this forum and elsewhere very closely since LR's inception (and earlier). My mind is very open to the various ways that different people work and the limitations of both current technology and development time. I understand that LR is a baby and will grow more and more useful over time as newer versions are produced.
I fail to clearly understand the purpose of LR.
After years of Adobe developing fragmented programs they decided to unify them within the Creative Suite. As newer versions of the CS have been developed, the way the individual programs interact has become more streamline. Unnecessary programs have been set aside and newer ones have been adapted to fit within the CS. Most recently the Macromedia product line, which first was loosely part of the CS family and now seems fully integrated with PS, Ai, ID and the others.
LR was purposely developed not to fit into the CS. Myself and others may not have fully understood the reasons for it but we accepted that LR promised to think outside the box - to bring a differnt way of thinking that was not subject to legacy workhabits. But with Jeff continually putting down the need for video and many other requested functions I doubt the legitimacy of the LR vision. To not allow photo & video to operate seamlessly together, even with limited functionality, completely lacks any foresight. Obviously video will be incorporated eventually, if for no other reason than we, the consumers, demand it. But to try and deny it is to deny the industry, the future.
My case in point is not RED or the Canon 5DM2, rather it is two of the programs within the newest iteration of Adobes own suite, CS4. The way InDesign files can be opened in Flash and manipulated there to allow for seamless publishing to the web. A few years ago most print publishers (and print software developers) may have balked at the suggestion that Quark or ID needed to "work well" with a web developer. But since all media (visual, motion, sound, database and web programming, animation, etc. see http://mediastorm.com/ for a taste of the future) are united it is hardly a stretch to ask Video and Still photography to live side by side - especially if they are created from the same device!
What's next, a phone that allows you to check your email, take photos & videos and surf the web?!
Why can't LR play nicely with everyone else? Maybe we need to start over.

  • How to delete video from iTunes library

Hello, I've only had my ipod for a few weeks now. I've finaly figured out how to rip dvds/encode them, etc. During this trial and error period I was putting all kinds of junk in my itunes library.
My question is how to remove videos from my itunes library.
    ..one more question.
I've been using a dvd ripper and video converter made by Xilisoft. After I import the movie from my pc to itunes video library and ipod, I've noticed that the audio doesn't match up with the video. Its like watching a poorly dubbed kung fu movie. Has anybody used Xilisoft software and had the same problems? If so, what did you do to recify the problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    self-built   Windows XP Pro

OK, I finally figured it out. I still don't have the clear option available. I had to double click on video, highlight, then press delete.
I'm curious why I don't have a clear option like I do in library.
Oh well, at least I can delete old files from my itunes now.
    Thanks for the quick responses.

  • HT5498 Is this information still valid after one and a half years? Are the lightning-to-HDMI or lightning-to-VGA cables the only available options to send video to a TV set?

There is a relative using an iPhone 5s and is interested in streaming video from her iPhone to an old TV set; unfortunately the TV set does not have either HDMI or VGA connectors; therefore we figured out getting a "lightning-to-30 Pin adapter", plug it to the iPhone 5s and use an old "Composite AV Cable" to do the trick. However, I found this post informing video streaming is not possible through the "lightning-to-30 Pin adapter", but -considering its post date- I would like to know if that info is still valid or if something has changed since then. Obviously changing the TV set is not an option, we have a limited "budget" to solve this.

Thanks for the feedback Rudegar. We're not planning using airplay mirroring using AppleTV, but directly as it used to work with old iPhone 4S. Just attaching the composite video cable (30pin-to-Composite) to the iPhone 4 worked on almost any TV set equipped with composite jacks. Maybe I have to rewrite the question to "...available wired options to send video to a TV set?"

  • How do I make a separate library for myself?

My husband has already set up itunes on our computer for himself with a full library of his songs. We listen to completely different music and when I start downloading tunes, I don't want them to be mixed in with his music. I tried searching this, but nothing was very clear to me. I'm thinking it must be possible to have a separate library for me, but can anyone tell me how? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

    Hello, Welcome to discussions.
The easiest method would be to create a new Windows user, So you both have your own Windows user account you can log into. This acts like a second computer in a way. You have your own desktop, your own programs customized to your needs. This includes iTunes.
When setting up iTunes in the new user. Tell it not to search for WMV or MP3 files. This will ensure you have a blank iTunes Library. And then from there you can start building it.
You can do a search on www.google.com or www.yahoo.com or any other search engine you use for key word " creating new windows user on Vista " without the quotation marks. And it will give you a list of quite a few sites with step by step instructions and pictures on creating a new user.

  • Library problem and question.

I'm sure that if I could check through the whole of the topic list and read all of the threads that seem to be relevant, I might find the answer, but I don't have enough time, and I don't know how to compose a search that would find me the answers I need accurately enough. I have two matters I need help with.
    (1) When the betas of LightRoom came out, I thought I would give it a try as it seemed to do what I wanted in terms of importing my photos and maintaining a database. Fundamentally it does, but as a result of the experimentation I did, things are a little confused in terms of the library.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with an external desktop HD, and I have recently bought a 120GB "pocket" HD. I am now shooting in RAW all the time, but some of the photos in the library are JPGs from my previous camera. My plan is to use the pocket drive to store the photos on, with a back-up on the desktop external. What I am currently doing is using DNG Converter to pull them off the card and save them on the pocket drive. Then I import the DNGs into LightRoom and organise them in collections. However, I also have many many JPGs from my previous camera which I would like to import. They are rather scattered in terms of where they are located.
The Library is currently the one that I set up when originally trialling the beta; it is on the HD of the MacBook Pro, backed up to the desktop HD, but there is another library on that HD that I set up while experimenting which contains other photos which I need to bring into a single library. I really feel I need to redo it completely starting again from scratch so that I can bring everything together in a better organised manner. What would be the best way to do that? And what is the best location for the library database?
    (2) The last time I imported some photos -- having done the DNG conversion and saved them to the pocket drive -- I then dragged them in batches to appropriate collection folders. However, for some of them, they do not appear in the folder I dragged them to, nor in any of the others ... they only appear in the overall "Library: all photographs" and "Library: Previous import". How can I retrieve them so that I can put them in the appropriate collection folder so that I can include them in the gallery based on that? The original DNGs are still in the folder on the pocket drive.
Sorry, this has been long and rambling, but I would really appreciate any help and advice.

Thanks for the reply Sean.<br /><br /><It sounds like you expect to be able to drag images from Previous Import into a folder. ><br /><br />I fear that is what I may have tried to do with these particular photos the first time when they got lost, but it is not what I normally do.<br /><br />I have a folder on the pocket drive called DNGs. Within this are a number of sub-folders for different sets of photos, Xiada, Longyan, Wuyishan, etc. When I use DNG Converter to take the RAW images off the card I have it put them in the main DNG folder, because for instance there may be some photos of flowers among them that I want eventually to go in the Flora sub-folder and photos of buildings that I want to go in the Xiada folder, even though all the photos were actually taken on the Xiada campus.<br /><br />When I import them into LR, they are found in a folder in the left pane of LR called DNGs. From there I drag them into the appropriate sub-folders, each time getting an alert about moving the photos on the disk.<br /><br />As I say, with the 9 photos in question, thinking back I may have dragged them from the "Previous Import". The result is that although the DNGs in question are invisible within LR, even though I deleted them rather than removed them, and I have gone through the whole process starting from getting them off the card again using DNG Converter, and they are now visible in the DNG folder in LR, when I drag them from there to the folder I want them in, LR issues an alert that "A file named P1000xxx.dng already exists at the destination" and doesn't move it, even though that photo is not visible.<br /><br />Again, as I said, on my desktop external drive, there is a parallel folder structure to the one on the pocket drive, and looking at the relevant folder using the finder, photos of those names are in that. I can delete them using the finder, but am worried that if I do so, the LR database will be corrupted. On the other hand, as they are there, but LR doesn't show them in the library, perhaps it is only the system that knows they are there and not LR, so deleting them will not affect the library.<br /><br />I guess the thing to do is to export all the photos in the library to a new location as DNGs with the metadata to XMPs, ready to redo the whole library set up from scratch  fortunately I am only dealing with a few hundred photos, not thousands or tens of thousands  and then try deleting them. If the current library is corrupted, then I can make a new one  I was going to wait until 1.1 and do that anyway  and if it doesn't then I should be able to do the move into the folders without problem.<br /><br />Also thinking round this, I should perhaps be using collections rather than folders anyway, so I must explore that for future reference.<br /><br />Mark in China

  • I have a library set up for my i-pop touch, how can my wife set up her i-phone on the same pc?

I have a library set up for my i-pod touch, how can my wife set up her i-phone on the same PC but with a seperate library location?

You can sync multiple iPods and iOS devices with the same iTunes library on one computer. Each device has its own sync preferences with iTunes and iTunes creates and updates a separate backup for each device.
Under the same computer login account, you can have separate iTunes libraries which will require manually having to log in and out of each one with iTunes which isn't necessary.
If you want separate iTunes libraries for you and your wife, probably best to create a separate computer login account for your wife where her iTunes library is completely seperate along with the rest of her data on the computer.

  • 2 videos...1 set of controls

I'm sort of a new user to Flash and what I'm looking to do is
run 2 seperate videos at the same time with both videos being
controlled by one set of buttons. So for instance, when I hit the
play button it would start both videos playing at the same time and
then if I hit the stop button both videos would stop at the same
point. I figure that this could be done using ActionScript but
everything I've tried hasn't worked at all. Any ideas?

    > Anyways, thanks for helping me out with this.
    Sure thing.
    > I was using the FLVPlayback Component to try to
    > make things work but really whatever will work best
    > because I've got the video in .flv format and in .wmv
    > format as well.
If you want to play an external video file, you'll have to
    use the FLV
version. Flash imports quite a few different video file
    formats for
internal playback, but that means the weight of the SWF
    itself will be
affected by the embedded video. Personally, I prefer a tiny
    SWF that
progressively downloads an FLV ... quicker experience overall
    for the user.
Nothing wrong with the FLVPlayback Component, but keep a few
    things in
mind: a) this particular Component requires Flash Player 8,
    which may or
may not bother you; b) this Component stands on its own
    (which is the point
of Components, of course) -- that is, its buttons are already
    "wired up," so
while it *may* be possible to re-wire them for two different
    videos, my
hunch is that it's easier to develop your own buttons
    altogether.

    > I don't know if that's because my PC isn't good enough
    > for that or that having 2 FLVPlayback Components is
    > too draining on the software.
Ehh, could be either. A lot depends on the size of your
    videos, too, as
well as framerate, bitrate, and so on. Generally speaking,
    the larger of
any facet, the harder your computer must work to display the
    video.
    > I'm mainly concerned with just figuring out how to get 2
    > videos going with one set of controls.
Here's a general, all purpose approach to Components and all
    objects in
Flash: just about everything in ActionScript can be referred
    to as an
object. Objects are defined by their namesake classes. For
    example, movie
clips are defined by the MovieClip class; dynamic and input
    text fields are
defined by the TextField class; FLVPlayback instances are
    defined by the
FLVPlayback class, and so on. This also applies to non-visual
    objects like
strings, dates, arrays -- the whole kaboodle.
Classes are essentially an Owner's Manual for the object in
    question.
Things the object can do are called methods; things the
    object reacts to are
called events; characteristics the object has are called
    properties. You'll
see one or more of these categories in practically every
    class entry.
See this article for additional information along these
    lines ...
    http://www.quip.net/blog/2006/flash/actionscript-20/ojects-building-blocks
... now, for better or worse, not all classes are organized
    the same way in
the documentation. FLVPlayback is one of those. The class
    entry for this
object is located in the Components Language Reference and
    doesn't list
methods, events, and properties on one convenient page.
Search the documentation on the phrase "Method summary for
    the
FLVPlayback class" and you'll find the methods page. Among
    these methods --
remember, these are things the object can *do* -- are
    FLVPlayback.play(),
    FLVPlayback.pause(), and more.
All you really need to do is drag two instance of the
    FLVPlayback
Component to the Stage, set the contentPath parameter of each
    instance to an
external FLV and give each instance an instance name via the
    Property
inspector. Once each has a unique name, you simple "call each
    by name," so
to speak, and tell it what to do.
You could create a button of your own -- just an ordinary
    button symbol
(which happens to be defined by the Button class) -- and wire
    up the button
to invoke the FLVPlayback.play() method of each instance ...
    myButton.onRelease = function() {
    myVideo1.play();
    myVideo2.play();
It's that simple. Of course, both of those FLVPlayback
    instances will
have their own play/pause buttons, which may get confusing.
    For this
reason, I would recommend you simply use a Video object as
    described in this
    article here ...
    http://www.quip.net/blog/2006/flash/how-to-load-external-video
Video objects (defined by the Video class) are fed by a
    combination of
NetConnetion and NetStream class instances. It's a bit more
    involved than
using the FLVPlayback class, but you'll see that it
    ultimately comes down to
naming your instance and invoking the relevant method (or
    event, or
    property) of the object.
I realize this may seem intimidating if you haven't done
    much
programming, but read through the above articles (not very
    long, apiece) and
see what you can accomplish. If you have additional
    questions, bring 'em
here and I'll be happy to continue helping you.
