Video Capture: is this a good idea?  Also RAID 1 vs. 2 separate HDs

Family videos on VHS. Original idea was to copy them all to DVD before the tapes degrade. Now thinking to capture the video on hard drives at the same time. This by taking video out of vhs/dvd combo unit (RCA connectors) into Canopus box, then via fire wire into my mac.
I like the HD redundancy idea of something like the OWC Guardian Maximus RAID 1 but wonder if I'd be better off with two separate HDs daisy chained together.
(Using iMovie HD6, ultimately editing this stuff down, maybe with FCE)
Thanks much!

Hi
Don't know all You ask - but I share what I know and do.
I use a Canopus ADVC-300 and a VHS-VCR
• this gives as good quality possibly
• the ADVC-300 doesn't need to be baby-sit as much though it can do a bit of Timecode
mending/correcting.
And import to iMovie HD6 or FinalCut Express or Pro - all works greatly.
I import to a project on the inrternal hard disk and only FW-connection to the
Canopus A/D-box.
This to make it as simple possibly.

    ashish35,
No one from Apple here - we're just users like you. All I can tell you is that electronic fail and with MacBook Pros (and most notebooks) the components are so integrated as to make a repair to the logic board practically impossible, hence the high prices charged for repairs.
Only you can decide if you want to have your computer repaired or put the money towards the purchase of a new computer. If you do decide to purchase a new unit I would suggest that you also purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan which increases your warranty from one year to three years.
    Sorry and good luck,

  • Where can I find one of those silicone body covers (not hardshell) for the Mac Book Pro? And is this a good idea?

Where can I find one of those soft silicone body covers (not hardshell) for the Mac Book Pro? And is this a good idea since Apple no longer makes them? I-phones use them now.

Personally I use the Speck hard case on both of my MacBooks and they are the greates! Look around on Amazon and eBay and you can find them for $30-40. I wouldn't really recomend a silicon case for a macbook, but it's your preference.

  • I want to use a fantom diamond as an external hard drive for my mac, is this a good idea?

Using a Macbook pro, with Snow Leopard (I think), and my memory is full so I want to store my stuff on an external hard drive. I found a 2T Fantom Diamond EHD, but I'm now learning that I have to convert to NTFS-3g. I'm not computer savy so I want to know if this is a good idea, or should I look for something different. Also, can I set up the EHD as the default path for itunes?

This is not the forum for MacBook Pro owners.
You just need to reformat the drive in Disk Utility and erase the drive and have  Mac HFS.
If you did need to use NTFS then you would not want -3G but Paragon NTFS for OS X x. 10.0
Or buy something that isn't pre-formatted to Windows NT file system.
First though make sure you have backups of your system. TimeMachine being used now?

Maybe cleanout some files you don't need.
Install a larger notebook hard drive even.
http://www.macsales.com/firewire has a lot of choice in Mac compatible drives and enclosures so you don't need to worry about Fantom not working at some point.

  • Looking at using apple TV to assist with photo editing on my MB Pro, is this a good idea?

I have a mac book pro 13 (2011) I am looking at using the Apple TV to display my MBP to my TV for photo editing, anyone able to let me know if they either have done this before, good or bad, or if you think it would work if you have not tried it yourself. Will also be using it for TV etc not just editing.
    Thank you in advance.
Currently have Lightroom 5 and PS CC for editing etc.

So you plan to mirror the MBP's display via the Apple TV to your TV and edit off that image?
Right off the bat I can see problems with color calibration between the MBP's display and the TV.  I edit in Aperture and while the images when displayed on my TV vi Apple TV look ok they are not exactly the same as they appear on the iMac.
So I guess it depends on what you plan to do with the images once you have edited them. Is there any printing involved? That brings in another whole layer of complexity.
For sharing on the web and with family and friends it should be Ok, for anything more professional you'll need to get everything calibrated.

  • Is this a good idea for house keeping? (re: render files)

I have half a dozen or so projects that I am all finished with, and want to make some disc space.
I am thinking a good way to make some is to delete all render files for a project, then open i and just re-render all so only actual files used in the timeline take up space.
Is there any reason why this isn't a good idea?
    cheers
    hugh

Not that I can think of.

  • Video player, Is this a good project for Flex.

I am creating a video player similar to BrightCove player (
    http://www.brightcove.com)
and also allows viewers to dynamically change the skin with CSS
files (text file) at runtime. Is Flex a good choice for this
    project?
    Thanks

Sure, why not. I don't know all of what BrightCove can do,
but Flash handles video very well.

  • Designing with video files ... Good idea or bad?

    Hey guys,
I have a DVD interface designed, therefore all the idle menus
and transitions are composed of video. I want to design my website
to reflect the DVD... so would it be a wise choice to use all the
videos -- in this case, looping page backgrounds and transitions
(all Quicktime format) -- and then code interactive buttons to
them? Obviously it will have to be compressed, but I don't want to
lose too much quality, yet I don't want the user to have to wait
forever to load up the site. Any ideas, thoughts, and/or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I vote against them. Because then you will be hearing audio in a way that NO ONE ELSE will. Often, when we go the final mix of a show, we listen to the audio as it plays out of TV speakers...because this is how a majority of people will hear it. The audio guy mixes using his good speakers, but then the final playback is thru the TV ones so we know audio works there too, and we can hear everything. If you use noise cancelling headphones, and put in subtle audio, that audio might be lost in real world playback.

  • Is this a good idea?  Question about backing up data

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro that is about two years old. It's working well.
I have a year old WD MyBook premium edition, 500GB, that I've been using as an external hard drive to back up my data. Recently, it was working fine (as recent as three days ago). Now, all of a sudden, it won't mount onto my computer. I've tried it in both the USB and Firewire ports, as well as on a different MacBook, and it won't mount anywhere. I also turned it on and off, turned off the computer, connected everything in a different order, etc. Then, I tried it on a PC with XP and it had no problem finding the drive and I was able to open it.
So I called WD tech support and he told me to do this:
-Connect the external hard drive to the PC
-Drag/drop all of the data on the drive onto the PC
-Reformat the external hard drive in Windows
-Drag and drop/put the data back on it
-Try to connect it back to the MacBook pro, where it should mount
He said something about partitioning the drive, which I sort-of understand what he meant, but not completely. This process seems like it will be long and may not work, so I wanted to get someone else's opinion before I started it. Does this seem like the right idea to get the hard drive to mount?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I see four possible alternatives, in varying degrees of severity:
    # There's some minor problem with the volume, preventing an automatic mount. Start up Disk Utility, plug the drive in (preferably via FireWire). Does the device appear on the left column of D.U.'s window? With the volume name greyed out underneath? If this is the case, try doing a Disk Repair on it: if any errors pop up, you will have to redo the repair until you get no more error messages or D.U. says it can't repair and you need to use stronger stuff.
    # The volume is severely damaged and/or the partition is shot. In this case, the device pops up in D.U., but no volume name appears underneath or you get a generic name. In this case, stronger stuff is mandatory, such as Disk Warrior.
    # The electronics of the drive are damaged, so that nothing appears on D.U.'s window when you plug the drive in on yours and other Macs and with both FireWire or USB. This can be caused by damage to the power supply (drive isn't turning on), the USB/FW bridgeboard that connects those interfaces with the HDD's ATA/SATA controller, or the HDD controller card itself. This would mean that the drive is, indeed, dead but if the HDD still works, you may be able to salvage it by opening the case up, taking the HDD out and putting it in another case, at least till you copy your info over to another drive. Then, if there's any sort of warranty left, you can put it back together and send it in.
    # Your Mac's interface ports (USB/FW) are somehow compromised and not working. Does the drive mount on another Mac? Have you tried resetting the Mac's PRAM/NVRAM and the System Management Controller (SMC)? Are you able to connect your Mac to another via Target Disk Mode?
Since tools such as Disk Warrior are expensive, some Apple shops may offer checking/repairing your drive with them, for a fee.

  • Is This a Good Idea??

Following is a c/p of an ad which I just saw on my local Craigs List and I'm seriously considering it, but I'd like to get opinions from those more experienced than I. I would welcome any guidance which you could give---pros? cons? Does the price seem reasonable? Would I just be buying a bunch of problems waiting to happen? Thanks for your input.
    Apple Computer Intel Desktop Clone * 100% Compatible * - $499
Do you want to buy a Intel Mac but are not willing to pay 2500 to 3000 Dollars for a mac pro?
I say mac pro because that is the only Desktop class MAC apple sells.
the iMac and Mac Mini are Mobile(laptop) hardware.
This * Intel Mac Clone * fills the gap between the iMac and the mac pro.
Extremely inexpensive, Extremely upgradeable, Extremely Powerful
All the hardware that is in this computer use
apple supplied drivers, this is what makes this INTEL Mac Clone so
Completely Compatible, OSX Tiger sees this mac clone as a real mac, it just works perfectly.
Run "Software Update" With out any worry, as if it were a brand new mac form the apple store.
Here is what is in this machine:
*-Great Case! 4 optical Drive Bays - 6 Hard Drive Bays
*-The case is Black power coated, Quality made. as seen in picture!
    *-Intel Conroe-L Processor
    *-1 GIG DDR 2 667mhz RAM
    *-Intel GMA 950 Graphics
*-Need More Graphics Power? 16x PCI Express Slot *Upgrade if needed*
    *-160 Gig SATA-II Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 16 m Cache
    *-20x DVD +DL +R -R
    *-Gigabit Ethernet
    *-6 usb 2.0 ports
Now you are standardized, you have redeemed control of your computer's
hardware, you are much more able to do things that apple has never wanted
anyone to do in the past. For example:
like add memory for the going rate price, or change the power
supply when it goes bad (after years of use) for under 40 dollars.
And of course * Easily * change/upgrade the CPU.
Buy this system, you will be very pleased!
You just can't beat this deal, After 11/16/2007 (Friday) the price on these is going back up to 599. i have one left sell at this price!

If you want to price an HP or Lenovo and run Vista x64, do so. If you want a good value on Macs, Apple Store REFURBISHED Specials are excellent.
If you want to run Windown on Mac, that is acceptable. But OS X on x86 is not, not even as a VM currently. (Can't run OS X under OS X either, which is a shame, but maybe Leopard Server?)
And a fully configured HP etc with Xeon cpu? costs a bit but they may use single cpu with either dual or quad core.
Vista is fine... if the hardware is up to its demands.

  • Is there a way to convert my current library, which is in AAC format to MP3? and is this a good idea?

my current library is in aac format. about 250 gigs. I was wondering if it would be better to convert to mp3. I noticed my audio discs do not play on alot of older players. Will converting help this or should i just stay with AAC?

You can convert AAC to MP3 in iTunes.
First go to iTunes menu, EDIT/PREFERENCES, go in "Import Settings", under 'Import Using', select MP3 Encoder, then OK and OK.
Now highlight song(s) in music library, right mouse click and select Create MP3 format.

  • I want to upgrade from snow leopard to Yosemite all at one time.  is this a good idea on my imac 8.1 using OS X 10.6.8?

I am using snow leopard on a mac 8.1  can I up grade in one step to Yosemite or should I up grade to an earlier OS first?

Yes, you can jump to Yosemite directly. Before you do be sure your computer is compatible:
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
I would also suggest you do the following before installing the upgrade:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • HT5621 I have several apple devices, three are mine and the other ones belong to my little children.  I use the same ID and password for all the devices.  Is this a good idea? Do I need to change the apples ID?

I use the same apple ID for all my devices, 2 iphones, 2 itouch, 1 macbook pro, 2 ipads.  Becuse I have small children, can I change that and still, have control, and don´t need to buy the same things serveral times.

It is something I would avoid if possible.   I would want to educate my children to think possessively and therefore of security.  Yes, I know you are all family but at the end of the day you wouldn't want your children to be blaming each other for any problems that arise.  Well, that's how I see it, for what it is worth.

  • Is using a taskbar icon in .exe combined with windows service a good idea as part of an alarm system?

My client wants an alert system and his focus is on the taskbar.  He wants the icon to change, (and ideally even blink) and also to have some beeping when a new work request comes in.  It needs to run constantly, and grab the attention of an operator
who may not be paying much attention to the screen.
I’m excited to develop this, but after years of web development, I feel paralyzed.  I must be making this harder than it needs to be, but here’s my plan…  I'll start with a windows form, which will run minimized, and have an icon that looks like
a hammer in the taskbar.  A timer would continually check for a new service requests.  When it sees one it would change the toolbar icon to a red x and sent a few dozen beeps out to the operator.  I think I need a windows service running that
checks periodically to see if my windows exe is running.  If not, it should start it up.  Perhaps this could be a scheduled task, rather than a service.
    Some of my questions are;
How do I change the taskbar icon on the fly?
Is this a good idea, or is there an easier way?
Snippets of code or related articles are most welcome!
    Thanks!

So I created a windows form and added a timer to check for unacknowledged requests.  If it finds any, it changes the icon on for the taskbar, and makes a beep.  Simple, but it works.  However, I'm having a beep of a time trying to figure out
where to put the ico files so they are where they need when I publish it.  Others seem to suggest adding them using the properties of the application, under application / resources / Icon and manigest blah blah blah.  But I can only seem to add one
there.  I need the three different ones.  I'm confused!  Any suggestions?
            private bool iconBig = true;

                        else
                            iconBig = true;

                            this.Refresh();
                else

  • ATTENTION - PlayBook OS Enhancement Request - (REALLY Good Idea IMHO)

    Hey,
I love my PlayBook! The device and OS are great foundations for an excellent tool.
One of the innovative ideas is the use of the Bezel to execute special functions - bring up the keyboard, access the system menu, etc.  It is a GREAT Idea!
I have never been a big fan of Touch (it's one of the reasons I returned my Torch which I loved - but that's another story).  One of MY big problems is scrolling.  Although I've adapted decently to this, I constantly find myself doing things I don't want to do when I'm scrolling because instead of scrolling, an item on the screen I'm trying to scroll gets activated instead of allowing me to "push" the screen up/down/left/right.  I can't believe I'm so inept that I'm the only person that suffers this problem.
So here's the idea.  You've got that nice big bezel sitting there doing nothing while I'm trying to scroll and going off in all directions.  Why not allow me to scroll by swiping the bezel area?  Swipe up or down the left or right side of the bezel (or swipe left or right on the top or bottom bezel) and this would scroll the contents of the screen with no possibility of accidentally "setting off" some other "tap" link on the screen.
I have no idea if this is an original idea, but I would LOVE to have the ability to do this!  Likewise, zooming in and out could be controlled by pinching or stretching the bezel areas - again preventing accidentally activating any items on the screen - and the side benefit of the stretch/shrink being confined to either horizontal or vertical.  BTW - I've already checked and these actions don't do anything right now, so there's no conflict with existing gestures as far as I can tell.
So what do you think?  Am I just a total spaz, or is this a good idea?
    Jerry

I think the cursor control that I have on my iPhone is really great and would be perfect on the Playbook..  If you aren't familiar with how the iPhone works, when you place your finger on the screen and hold it there a couple of seconds then a magnifing glass pops up above your finger and shows you where your cursors is and as you move your finger the magnifinge glass moves with it and shows the position of the cursor moving also in the magnified view.  Butthat is one way to do it.. works well.
