Video card VRAM changing

Here's a wacky one. I have a 867 TiBook that is in great shape, hardly used. But the display is wacky. It goes all funky and distorted but will eventually, if I restart a few times, be fine. So it was fine today, I had taken it apart to check the connectors from the display to the logic board, they were loose so I thought I was done. After an hour the screen slowly starts deteriorating. Little anomalies here and there, some yellowing etc...So I go into system info and look in graphics and it says 16MB for VRAM (Total). I rub my eyes. Still 16 MB. So I restart. Display is fine again. Check system info. 32 MB.
Huh?

Thanks much for your help. There's really no reason WHY I should spend any time at all trying to fix this thing as I already have an 800MHz TiBook that work great, a MacBook, an iMac G5, a Power Mac G5, a 466 MHz PowerMac G4, two Mac Minis (1.25 Power PC model and latest 2 GHz Intel), an XServe and a ton of Macs I support at work (not trying to brag, just trying to talk myself out of this really...errrg!! No luck.), but now I see this as a personal challenge. Thing is, I don't have the original CDs that came with it as this was a "If you can fix it, it's yours" situation. Any idea where I can get them? Feel free to say "No."

  • Changing the order of precedence of video card ports

My video card, a Radeon HD 5450, has three outputs: HDMI, DVI, and D-SUB. I have my TV plugged in to my computer via HDMI and my monitor via DVI. I ignore the D-SUB port.
The HDMI port appears to take precedence. When I start my computer, the resolution is configured for my TV, which is then mirrored to my monitor. This isn't a problem, because I configured X to switch resolutions (so the monitor is correct, and the TV disabled) as soon as X starts. But this doen't take into account the TTY screens and the other operating systems I have installed.
Is it possible to change the order of precedence of ports on my video card? Do any video cards support changing this?

Have you tried doing it through Catalyst Control Center (or whatever it's called these days)?
Or maybe there's some jumpers/headers on the card itself.
The only [remotely] similar experience I have had was with an nVidia card. It had VGA, DVI and HDMI. The HDMI was inactive during POST, and there was nothing could be done about it.

  • Snow Leopard Virus?  RAM?  Video Card?

I have a beautiful, original, Macbook Pro (2006) running 10.6.8.  About a month ago, a set of bars similar (see attached image) began appearing next to my trackpad cursor.  After about 15-20 minutes of the bars on screen, my computer would freeze.  Over the next week or so, this would happen more frequently and eventually my screen began distorting.  I'd have to force shut down and restart, but after a couple more days, I could barely get my laptop to boot.... it would freeze on gray screen.
Anyways, I eventually had to wipe the computer.  I couldn't get any of my restore discs to work, but I was able to boot off of an external drive and re image.  After reimaging, I totally wiped it with my original Tiger restore discs and worked it back up to 10.6.8 (which is as high as it can go).
Keep in mind, before I reimaged, my coworker ran a diagnostic on it and all it said was that my battery was bad.... I purchased a 3rd party battery on eBay about a year ago.... seems fine to me.   We also tried swapping the RAM with some other used RAM but this reproduced the same issues.
So now it's been a couple weeks since I reimaged and then wiped my laptop... it's been working beautifully.... but the issue just came back!!!!
Today, I was actually able to start it up with the original Tiger restore discs, but about 10 minutes into the install, the bars appeared next to the cursor!!!  I attached a pic so you can see what they look like.  The install is still going, with the bars!!!  I'm just gonna let it go and see what happens!!!
Has anybody ever seen this issue???  Any advice?  I don't want to put much more money into this laptop, but if it's a simple fix then I'm all ears!!!  I thought about buying some new RAM, but like I said, I've swapped out the (2) 1 GB sticks and it didn't help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!  I actually recently ordered a new MacBook Pro, but I'd really like to keep this one alive!!!
P.S.  The 2nd picture is an image of my screen when I boot up.... this screen appears "sometimes".

Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see double lines it's a Video card/VRAM problem, if the lines do not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or cable.

  • Is it possible to change the video card of a pavilion g7-1075dx?

So, I have an HP Pavilion g7-1075dx Notebook with Windows 7. I'm an avid gamer and wish to play the newest games. However, there's one problem thats keeping me from doing so. Alot of the newer games require newer video/graphics cards. This particular laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. The newest games seem to require ATI Radeon HD 4850 and above. This is the only thing thats keeping me from playing games like Starcraft II on the highest settings OR in the case of Star Wars: The Old Republic, it almost keeps me from playing the game, period, due to the graphics being too much for my current card to handle, causing massive lag. I was hoping I could change the video card. Upgrade. However, i've heard that with most laptops or notebooks you can't upgrade anything other than the RAM. I'm hoping anyone on here can help me out and tell me if it is possible to get a new video card for my laptop. We don't have a desktop computer so this laptop is my only hope for a long time to play newer PC games.

Alright, let me put this in a simpler message: Does anyone know if it is possible to change the video card currently in my laptop, the HP Pavilion g7-1075dx, for a newer and better one. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 to ATI Radeon HD 4850 or higher.

  • Can I upgrade the video card in my 2009 iMac with the new ATI 2 GB VRAM card?

I am looking for more video RAM for video, CGI and animation work in Blender.
I may purchase Final Cut Pro X in the near future and I need to make sure there is enough video RAM to be able to work with this version of FInal Cut.
I, currently, use Final Cut 4 Express and though this runs fine, through Rosetta, on my current setup, I fear this much newer version may need more graphics power than I have, now.
I, also noticed some lag when working with Blender.
No where near as much graphics or video/animation lag as when I using Blender on my old G4m but it's still slightly noticeable.
I realize I may have to install this myself.
Can I purchase, somewhere, Apple's 1 or 2 GB ATI card seperately or from a third party vendor and install, myself.
I have seen posts that tell that the 27 inch iMac has a removable video card and is not soldered to the logic board like in the 21 inch models.
If true, is there a complete procedure for the iMac breakdown, installation of the video card and reassembly procedure?
My iMac only has the stock 256 MB VRAM graphics card.
If the take down looks more difficult than I feel I can attempt, I have an Apple authorized reseller, repair facilty here, in my area.
Could I purchase the card and have them install it for a fee?
ThanX for all of the info and advice, in advance
    Michel

You will need to check if your model originally was offered with a custom build option that included a different graphics card. If so, you may be able to have it done; here is a fellow who managed to do it on a 2011 iMac (graphics card not soldered) and the model originally offered a better card option:

    Is this yours:
    http://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-3.06-27-inch-alumin um-late-2009-specs.html
In particular, click on the link in this section of the specs:
I'd check either with Apple and/or an AASP to see if it can be done with yours or if yours is one of those where it is part of the Logic Board/soldered to it.

  • My iMac is in the return program to change video card, how can I contact Apple ?

    Hello
I just saw that my iMac bought in 2011 is just in the replace program for video display card. How can I contact Apple to change freely the video card ?
    Thanks

Apple has announced that Mid 2011 iMacs have a defective ATI GPU and they are being repaired for free. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5167?viewlocale=en_US
Simply take the iMac to an Apple Store or reseller. Make a backup of your data before taking it in

    Let's see...
Sounds like you're running into an expected issue if you make an alias to removeable media.  The same thing would happen if you made the alias to a folder on a DVD-R disc or CD-R.  If you eject the original, you disable the alias.
If you copy the entire SD card volume to your drive, the PRIVATE package should copy across.  Then, as a folder on your hard drive rather than a volume on removeable media, you could make an alias to the STREAM package for quicker access later.
I'm pretty sure that Handbrake, like Prmeiere Pro, can see the MTS files directly.  That is, it's not dependant on the other folders in the PRIVATE directory sturcture.  As such, you could copy the contents of the STREAM package to another folder on your drive.  Just be mindful of the default MTS file names if you're using more than one SD card (you don't want to accidentally copy 00001.MTS from one card over 00001.MTS from another card).
As long as Handbrake sees MTS directly, you could even rename the MTS files after you've copied them.
On a side note, I almost always archive my SD cards with the data structure intact.  More often than not, that file structure is important to corretly access the video stored within that structure.  If something unexpected happens while working with the MTS files, it is good to have the original file structure to go back to.  Although, SD cards are getting to be so low cost that sometimes I just label the SD card and store it for archiving.

  • Post your changes upon disabling discrete video card.

Hi, I had problems with disabling discrete video card on my laptop and results are very disappointing. I think its good to compare my results with others. So could you post it, pls.
    For example my results:
    - laptop asus x53sc
    - nvidia 520mx
    - temp: 57-58 -> 52-53 Celcius (fan still make noise, on windows its 45 C and fan is unhearable)
    - battery: 1:50 > 2:30 (on windows it is 3:30 geez)
So as you see its not much. Maybe I do something wrong, thats why I want compare it with others.

I am not sure if simply echoing "OFF" is the right way to do this:
    sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
    0:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0
    1:DIS: :DynOff:0000:01:00.0
I have a Sandybridge - NV GT540M hybrid, so maybe this doesn't cover your cases.
But there were a lot of changes in kernel 3.12 regarding hybrid laptops, both for ATI/AMD and nVidia, so many instructions you find in the wiki and elsewhere could be outdated.

  • Driver video card changed

i've a question, in my pc i have a video card Via/S3G UniChrome Pro Igp (64 MB) integrated and the motherboard's chipset is Via K8M800/K8N800, i've changed the driver video to xf86-video-unichrome but now i've restarted the pc and all are more clearer, so what can i do to set up again the deafult brightness?
And another question, the driver xf86-video-unichrome are correct for my video card?
    p.s. i've installe this version,  xf86-video-unichrome-0.2.6-4
p.s.2. and if i want to use 3d in arch with this video card how can i do?
    thanks

The xf86-video-unichrome supports your card, you could also try the xf86-video-via driver .
I don't know the capabilities of this driver, but this is the xorg.config from another archlinux user with unichrome.

  • Firefox crashes when it starts. I tried to reset it; I uninstalled and reinstalled it; no way. The problems began after I changed my video card

    Crash ID: bp-1c18c383-28e4-426c-96a7-ff97e2130906
    OS: Windows 7 SP1 64bit
I had to change my video card, immediately after this FF started crashing at start.
The video card is a Nvidia GeForce 210.
    I tried to:
    - reset FF;
    - uninstall it, clear the register, reinstall it;
    - update Windows;
    - update the video card drivers (311.06)
    but no way.
I can start FF in Safe Mode.
Any help will be truly appreciated.

I solved it by disabling hardware acceleration in FF options.
It seems to be a conflict between FF and some Nvidia drivers.

  • How to change IP address if no video card??

I have an Xserve running Tiger with an assigned (static) IP address set in System Preferences. I just moved it from one company to another, so of course the static IP isn't right anymore because now it's on a different network with different numbers. I have a problem changing it in System Preferences though, because it has no monitor - the video card was replaced with a fiberchannel card for the XRaid. I used to run it headless and interact with it via VNC (remotely), but now that its IP address won't let it on our network, I can't reach it via VNC to change the IP. A chicken-and-egg problem - I need to VNC in to change the IP and I can't do it until the IP is correct... Anyone have any ideas - how do I get to the System Preferences and change it to DHCP or a correct static IP?
    Mike

Connect on the LOM if you have one (Intel Xserve) and if the LOM is configured, or connect on the 9-pin serial line and use bash shell to make the changes or (probably the easiest approach here) set up a completely private and completely isolated LAN with the existing (and wrong) IP addresses (do not connect this LAN to anything other than your client (give it a static "wrong" IP address in the same subnet as the Xserve and its "wrong" address) and your Xserve and your unmanaged network switch) and connect into the Xserve on the existing IP address using your familiar techniques and tools. Once the name is changed, you can set your IP addresses back to what is necessary.

    Hi fabiangs,
I'm not sure that I follow. Are you saying that when you open a PDF file in Acrobat or Reader, that the display resolution changes automatically on your system?
What version of Acrobat/Reader are you using? Do you see this same issue in other files/applications?
I look forward to hearing back from you.

  • Will this card work? - Nvidia Geforce 6800 ULTRA 256MB VRAM AGP Video Card

I posted a question about getting the maximum resolution from an Apple 30 inch Cinema Display and another card, which didn't work.
The replies were fast here in the forum and quite correct.
My next question is regarding the Nvidia Geforce 6800 ULTRA 256MB VRAM AGP Video Card.
I have an AGP card with an ATi Radeon 9600 Pro card that can't power the 30 inch because it's only 64MB and no DVI output.
I'm wondering whether this card will give me the maximum resolution?
    Thanks again.

    Hi Japamac-
    Thanks for the quick reply.
My System Profiler indicates a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, but it doesn't have the Dual Link since this is an older G5 with only 64MB of VRAM.
The GeForce 6800 is a refurb, but is Mac compatible.
I'm hoping that it will work, but since it won't be returnable, I don't want to spend the money needlessly.
I did order another card that the Apple support suggested should be compatible, but turned out that they sent me the PC version.
I've spoken to Apple as well and get conflicting info.
It boils down to the fact that this is a G5 with a late 2004 date.
It is fast enough for me and my only hang up is that I'm only getting 12980X800 resolution.
I'm not using it for gaming or graphics processing.
    HTH.
