Video iPod, Color dock, and S-video

Has anyone used the v-iPod with the Color iPod dock and gotten S-video to work with music videos? It works fine with the Apple AV cable, but I get no video if I go from the S-video jack on the dock to the TV.

Welcome to discussions. I have not tried it, but please let me know what the quality is like via s-video when you do get it to work. It is it possible that the colour dock is not fully compatible with the 5G. I also assume that you have the TV channel set to s-video.

  • Apple iPod Universal Dock And Remote

So If I have the Apple iPod Universal Dock and the Apple Remote And a iPod nano do I have front row?

So in case anyone at Apple is paying attention:
    1) Offer a package of the Apple Remote, a USB receiver for it, and Front Row together as a bundle for existing Mac users. It is a perfect fit for the Mac mini sitting in my stereo cabinet connected to my TV.
    2) Assuming that Photobooth only works with an iSight camera, then why not offer it as a free download for all customers who already have iSights? Presumably it wouldn't do anyone without an iSight any good - right? It should then be packaged with all iSights as a standard part of the package.
If you can't do (1), then at least issue an update to Tiger (10.4.3 for example) that includes Front Row built in with the ability to drive it from a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse? Then offer the Apple Remote with a USB receiver later...
It's so obvious I can't believe it wasn't done today...

  • Nano iPod photo dock and S video out?

Has anyone with an iPod photo dock slipped their nano into it to see if the photos will display on a TV (attcheed via S-video?)
Since Apple didn't offer a video cable out for nano, I suspect it doesn't output slideshows, but it would be interesting to find out if the video signal gets sent to the dock connector. Easy way to test is to try to send the slide show out to a TV via ths S-video output of the dock.
    Any experience out there?

    Hi Dave,
No, I did not get a response, but Apple did announce the "Apple iPod Universal Dock" with the release of the new iMac on October 12th (the "one more thing" press conference).
The new dock replaces the old photo dock and supports ALL iPods with dock connector (including the nano and the recently introduced iPod with Video). The new dock retails for the same price as the old photo dock but is more feature rich.
The new photo dock supports slideshows out via S-video, as well as video for the video iPods. It also includes a sensor that works with the same IR remote that ships with the iMac. This remote does NOT come with the dock, but is available as an accessory for the dock for $29. If you are buying the new iMac, there is no need to purchase another remote (unless you tend to misplace remotes
Below is a description of the new dock from Apple's web site. The product doesn't ship for 3 to 4 weeks (as of Oct 23)
Here are some of the things you can do with the Universal Dock:
Connect the Dock to your computer with the cable that came with your iPod, then place your iPod in the Dock to sync and charge the battery. No more reaching behind the computer to plug it in.
Connect the Dock to an electrical outlet using an iPod Power Adapter, then place your iPod in the Dock to charge the battery.
Connect the Dock to a stereo or speakers using an iPod AV Cable or a stereo audio cable to play music from iPod.
Control playback from a distance using the Apple Remote.
Display photos on a TV or other video device using an iPod AV Cable or S-video cable if you have an iPod with a color display.
Display videos on a TV or other video device using an iPod AV Cable or S-video cable if you have an iPod with video capability.
    Hope this helps!

  • Ipod Nano Compatibility with Ipod Universal Dock and Remote

I have an 8GB Black 2nd Gen iPod Nano. I want to connect it to my stereo. I was told that the Apple Ipod Universal Dock would be a good solution.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C0 4E07A&nplm=MA045G/C
The website says that it is compatible with my nano, so no big deal right? I just wanted to make sure it would work fine with my iPod nano before I went and bought one. Does it come with the AV cable to connect the dock to my stereo / tv? DOes the dock have a graphical menu interface like some of the third party docks/remotes have?
Also, will the Apple Ipod Remote work with the universal dock?
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=BB5 E48CD&nplm=MA128G/A
The apple store website says that everything will be compatible, but I wanted confirmation from someone who has actually owned this or knows about this.
Can you offer any better docks/remotes ideas?

I was looking at the review CNET had for that Kensington dock.
    http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-player-accessories/kensington-entertainment-dock-500 /4505-6519_7-31631868.html?tag=uolst
I had a question about part of the review though, I am not sure I am understanding it correctly.
"We were impressed by the remote's ability to take control of our iPod; most of the third-party iPod-dock remotes we've seen only pause the music or video, skip tracks, and adjust the volume, not browse the menus. That said, the Entertainment Dock still isn't perfect. When you navigate the menus, your TV screen will be blank, so you must rely on the iPod's screen for your visual cues. Our other gripe is that the remote seems cheaply designed: The buttons on our review model looked misaligned (if usable), while the battery cover was annoyingly difficult to pry open. We got about 30 feet of range from the remote, which is more than adequate for most living rooms."
So this means that even though the remote can navigate the menus on the iPod, you wont be able to see what you are doing unless you go to the screen of your iPod?

  • Ipod universal dock and remote doesnt work!!!!!

I'm fairly new to the whole apple and ipod thing, i bought an ipod nano last week and bought a universal dock with remote today (proper apple one), but the menu button on the remote doesnt work(it does on the ipod itself but thats not the point) so i cant go 'back' from an album i'm playing to find another one i want to play. the volume works fine as does the track back and forth and play pause. But my menu button on the remote doesnt work, this is incredibly frustrating!!!!!
    Can anyone help?
one more thing it's not a fault with the remote as my brother has a mac mini with a remote which works fine with his, but the menu button again isnt recognised on my dock!

If you read the manual, you'll see that the menu button is for other devices, but not our Nano's. Apple doesn't make this clear on it's website, IMO. Had I known this, I would not have bought a u-dock. Plus, when my Nano is docked, I can't use the lower 1/3 of the wheel, as the Nano sits too low for my fingers to reach. It's going back to the store next week.

  • 5G iPod Universal Dock and FireWire

I'm thinking of upgrading from my 3G iPod to a new 5G version. Is the 3G dock (with FireWire connection) compatible with the new iPod, or is a new dock necessary? Is there no FireWire connection possible on the new 5G iPod? Thanks!

Apple do not ship docks with new iPods anymore. because they are only making one type of dock now. instead they are selling adaptors.
Also firewire is no longer compatable to transfur files from your PC / Mac to your iPod but you can still charge with the firewire cable you got with your 3G.
what im going to do when i get mine is charge using firewire into a plug socket in the wall. and keep the USB 2.0 cable attached to my computer so there will be no more diving behind my computer to update my pod all i'll have to do is switch cables

  • Took ipod off dock and it wont respond

So basically a few months ago I put my ipod nano 3g on an ipod dock while I slept, which I've done may times before. In the morning when I went to go remove it was really hot, it wouldn't turn on, so I tried re-setting it, that didn't work, so I plugged it into my computer and that also didn't work... I'm hoping somebody out there can help me out

First off, the touch will normally turn itself off after you unplug it from your computer or an external charger. However, you should be able to turn it on again.
I suggest you do a reset. Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together until you see the Apple logo. You may see a red slider appear but keep holding the buttons down - it will take about 10 seconds. This should get you back working again.
Since you are a relatively new user, you need to read up on iPod touch basic troubleshooting. This link will get you there: http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/troubleshooting/

  • S-Video + iPod Universal Dock supposed to work, doesn't

According to this Knowledgebase article, I'm supposed to be able to get video out of my iPod Classic using an iPod Universal Dock and an S-Video cable. (Scroll to the end of the article.) Doesn't work. When I try to play video, the iPod just puts up the "connect a video accessory" nag screen.
The KB article is quite specific about this configuration. Is the article incorrect, or is there some way to make this work that I'm missing?

    I'm having the same problem.

  • Old Apple dock and composite AV cables

My old iPod with Color display (circa 2005) recently died, so I'm getting a new iPod Touch 4G.
the old iPod could display pictures on the TV as well as play music. I had it in an old style genuine Apple dock and used a genuine Apple Composite AV cable to connect the dock and my home entertainment system so I could show the pictures on the TV and play music through my surround sound system. That old Apple AV cable did not connect through the dock connector but is connected to the dock through a headphone like 3.5mm plug. That old Dock also has an S-Video out
All the original stuff was bought years ago when I made good money... but I lost my job over a year and half ago and just got another after being out of work that long that pays significantly less than I used to make ...
As my old iPod died, after living on shoestring budget so long with NO frills, even though money is still tight, I decided to give myself a gift for the holidays and replace it with a Touch.
I knew i would have to replace my old Apple Firewire chargers (I have 2) and my old 3rd party firewire car charger (in the car I had a line out cable from dock connector as well which I connected to a cassette adaptor for my 9 year old car)..
But figured I could find USB chargers cheaply and could still use the old dock and AV cables (as those were - and still are- outrageously expensive)...
But I've started reading things which I think are saying is that I might not be use my old Apple Dock, and Apple Composite AV cables which is making me nervous.
So ... can I use the old Apple Dock and AV cables for video with the 4g Touch????
There should be no TECHNICAL reason for it not to work... but maybe Apple has gotten a bit more greedy...
If it does not work for video, will at least the audio part of the cable connected to that dock and the s-video out work? I can make that work with what I already have to get audio and video.
If not then I need a lot more new stuff I can't really afford... and will be very very disappointed and angry with Apple... There is no good reason those things should stop working other than purposely sabotaging them to make me have to buy new over priced accessories! I PAYED my apple tax on those already!
    Thanks for any info...
    A worried karen

Apparently there are at least 3 different Dock model numbers.
The Model number is the most important and can be found on the bottom of the dock.
The part numbers may change due to several things like boxing an AV cable with or without a wall charger. You would probably get the same cable but the part number on the box would be different due to possible other contents inside the box.

with Apple Composite AV Cable Part# MC748AM/A
or Apple Component AV Cable Part# MC917ZM/A
I had both items in #2 above. I still have the iPod Universal Dock and it came in its own box.
No remote, No cable(s), but did come with 5 dock adapters.
I never tried my iPod Touch through the Dock to the TV. I did try the iPod Touch using the older iPod AV Cable to the TV but that did not work and the link above tells us it doesn't. That's why I bought the newer Composite Cable which does work when directly connected to the TV and the iPod Touch.
I gave my older cable away to a friend so I can't test if it would work like the document says or not but like you said, in theory, it should work.
According to the document given above and below, the iPod Touch should work with your Dock you have now even though it doesn't list the 4th generation. (I don't think they have updated this yet)

If you buy a new iPod Touch 4th generation, then I guess the only way you will know for sure is to try it out and let us know here.

  • Ipod color display

I just bought an ipod color display and downloaded a movie to my MacBook. How do I download the movie to my ipod, so I can watch it?

The iPod with color display is not capable of movie playback.
The only iPod that is is the iPod 5th generation (iPod video).

  • Video Output on iPod Classic using Apple Universal Dock and Camcorder Cable

So, after a little experimentation and research, I've found a way to use Apple's Universal iPod Dock (Apple®-iPod™ Universal Dock-MA045G/A) and my camcorder's AV cable. That's right, no need to purchase Apple's expensive and proprietary AV cables. Of course, if resolution is a concern for you, this post is not for you. Note: if you don't already have a camcorder AV cable, they can be had cheaply online or in retail stores.
Here's what my output is like:
    Composite Video
    Analog Audio
    Here's how to do it:
    Step 1:
Get an Apple Universal iPod dock (if you are fortunate enough to already own one, your cost investment is $0). If not, you can order them online, just do a google search for the model # above.
    Step 2:
Go here (http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/mac/2005/11/18/video-ipod.html) and follow the details of the article precisely to allow you to output video and audio. Yes, I know it's an old article for the 5G video iPod, but it still applies if you are using the Universal iPod dock.
I just tested this all, so I know it works beautifully!
    Best of luck to all!
    David

For anyone else with similar issues - Apple removed that functionality in the iPod classic and you can simply buy Apple's cables to make it work.
Sadly, I cannot use it at my gym anymore, but at least there is a solution for the rest of you!
Here is the necessary cable in the Apple store:

  • Connecting Video ipod to 4th gen dock and cables

Can you charge and load music using the dock and USB/Firewire cables from a Monochrome 4th Gen Ipod to a Video Ipod?

They share the same dock connector so you can defininely charge off the Dock. However the new 5th gen iPods do not support data trasnfer with Firewire. So if th dock is connected via Firewire, you will only be able to charge, but not sync.

  • No Video via Universal Dock and Apple AV Cable 5.5g iPod

I recently tried outputting video from my 5.5g iPod via the Univrsal Dock and Apple's AV cable. When the iPod is docked, I get sound through the TV, but no video. If I move the AV cable to the headphone jack on the iPod itself, I then get Video and Audio. Does anyone have any insight into this? I am using the iPod specific AV cable and not the iBook AV cable like on other postings.

I am sorry that this seems to have gotten confusing. I hope this makes more sense.
Only iPod AV cable (RCA video, audio left, audio right) from Universal Dock to TV = No Video, Yes Audio. No SVHS cable from dock being used.
Only iPod AV cable from iPod’s headphone jack to TV = Yes Video and Audio. No SVHS cable being used.
Is the universal dock supposed to be used with an SVHS cable and Audio via the AV Cable for connection to a TV? I did not try that as my SVHS port is taken, but I might give it a whirl. (The video settings were set correctly to TV Out = On and NTSC.)

  • I have the apple univeral dock and AV cables and   can play videos and slide shows on my TV but not music How do I play the music

I am trying to connect an IPOD classic to my TV to play music
I have the dock and AV cables and can play videos and slide shows but not music

Actually, i figured part of it out. When I'm playing itunes to my Apple Tv and Airport Express stations around the house, then turn on the mirroring, the itunes volume bar goes all the way to zero. I can bring it back up manually, and it will play on Apple TV, but it won't broadcast to multiple Airport Express speakers, the way it was doing before I turned on mirroring. It seems that mirroring turns off the airport express stations.
