Viewing External video through HDV Camera!?

I am trying to record some footage on to an HDV tape. The camera I am attempting to use as a deck is the Sony HDR-HC5 (it is a consumer based camera) I have my sequence set up as the preset for HDV1080i. But for some reason I can not get an image on the camera to show up. When I change the input on the camera to DV, I can see an image. But not when I change it back to HDV.
If anyone knows if this camera can actually take an hdv input that woud be great!
Cheers,
Jesse

Hi,
Are you recording a video or capturing (then trying to monitor your HDV footage externally?
You need a capture card to monitor HDV.
Also there are some threads reporting specific issues with your camera model,
Use the the search tool of the forum to check out topics about the HC5.

  • Can't Play Video Through To Camera iMovie Crashes

I was working with iMovie 3 the other day and viewing the project on my TV using my trusty old Canopus ADVC 100 with the "Play Video Through To Camera" option checked in Preferences. Today I went to preview a new project and iMovie crashes everytime it finishes loading all of the clips with the play through option checked. The only way to open the project is to turn off the ADVC and uncheck the play-though option and re-save. It will load whether the ADVC is on or off as long as the play through option is not checked.
    What could have changed?

    Hi David
This is a guessing question - so many ways things can go wrong.
May be You find some help in my list:
    Mac:
    - hardware
◊ Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
◊ I wonder how full your Mac's hard disc is. (David Babsky) A near full hard disk prevents Import/Capture. 10% free is recommended + space for Import/Capture + work space (about 4 to
5 times the amount needed for Capture) eg on a 200Gb hard disk You need 20Gb + (one hour tape)
    13Gb + 50Gb = about 80 to 90Gb free space.
◊ Disconnect all other ext devices (FW and USB) exept Camera (and keyboard + mouse) and try again
    ◊ Reset PRAM
    ◊ Bad RAM-chips
◊ disconnect Mac from powerline (not just switch off, really plug out) for a few minutes to reset FW ports
    - software
◊ File-Vault is on - turn it off
◊ Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
◊ Do You have desktop pictures or screen or energy-savers active? Try turning them off.
◊ Updating - OS has to be a clean install - not an update eg from X.3.x to X.4.x (no good) OS X.4.0-5 needs a clean install to work (I use X.3.9)
◊ Updating QT and/or other updates (to 7 needs v6 to be cleaned out first) QT v.7.0.0-4 needs a clean install to work (I use 6.5.2)
◊ Have you tried the crazy fix: Open GarageBand, play a few notes, close it and reopen iMovie. The camera should import fine now. Sue/SDillini
◊ Running iDVD at the same time as iMovie can cause problems: (Lennart Thelander)
◊ If You also have installed FinalCut Express/pro there are possibly problems with this
    iMovie:
◊ remove bookmarks in iMovie project
    ◊ Trash: com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie3.plist : files (Xinram)
    Connection:
◊ don’t Daisy chain Camcorder <--> external hard disk <--> Mac
◊ FW-wire cable, is it OK?
    ◊ USB/USB2 is NO GO !
◊ Cheque FW connection at Camera end. OK? (Adam Smith1)
◊ Cheque FW connection at Mac end. OK?
    Camera:
◊ The Camera is set to VTR ? (not as when You ”film” record with it)
◊ You may be need to go to the Camera menu and select digital out.
◊ defective camera TRY IT ON ANOTHER MAC ! (if the A/D chip in the camera is harmed then it will say in iMovie that the camera is connected and You can forward resp. backward the tape but there will be no picture or sound just the blue screen).
◊ connect camera to power-line, not battery-only....(Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Canons don't allow daisychaining on firewire, make it "only device" on port (Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Cheque the menu on Your Camera so that it communicates with the FW digitally to Your Mac
◊ Date and Time is correct on Your Camera ?
    Tape:
◊ Drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
◊ Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is pre-recorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)
◊ If You recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a standard 60 min tape with 12-bit sound). Try to change in iMovie pref. to import but not as individual clips. If this doesn’t work You have to make a Camera to Camera copy with the receiving Camera set to SP-mode and 16-bit sound.

    NEWS: Jerry Harris writes:
I know that in a lot of the new Sony HD cameras, iMovie requires that you turn iLink Conv off. I would look for a similar setting for your camera. This setting has to do with shooting a movie in one format, and using the camera to import as a different format. For instance, if you shoot HD footage and have iLink conv on - the camera will send DV to the computer etc...
So, case in point: look for a setting on your camera that has to do with the video format and see if that helps.

  • No external video from HDV timeline through Sony HDV deck.

Without buying an external video card, is there a way to view an HDV timeline on an external monitor? I can capture HDV footage easily and see it play back fine in the Canvas on my Mac Pro, but I can't see the captured HDV footage on my external monitor that's hooked up via FireWire to my Sony HVR-M25 deck.
Here are the Audio/Video Settings I'm using:
Sequence Preset is HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset is HDV
Device Control Preset os Sony HDV Firewire
I'm also noticing that the Video Playback HDV options are grayed out, so I'm assuming I would either need an external video card to play back the capture HDV footage the timeline on my external monitor, or use another combination of codecs to (maybe) use my stock Mac Pro setup. Whew.
    Thanks in advance.

No. Sorry, but the format doesn't allow it. You can send a downconverted SD signal out via firewire in realtime, but it won't be your full HD image. If you want the full HD image, you need an HD capture device. #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • Importing VHS video through digital camera

I am importing VHS video through my Sony camera (TRV22) to imovie.  For some reason it the screen will go blue for a few seconds then the picture will come back.  I was doing this on a older power pc mac and imovie would just stop recording.  On my new imac it doesn't stop recording but the screen goes blue.    Has this happened to anyone else and maybe know what is causing it?  Should I try a different way of video transfer with some other software?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Two possible causes:
    Faulty or badly connected cables
    You are not using Firewire

  • When will LT have "View ext. video through Firewire"?

Just installed the FCS upgrade and was dissapointed the I can't yet see using firewire to the monitor in LiveType. I do see that Soundtrack Pro has this now, which delights me but I would think that being text and all, that we would see this in LT as well. We need this!

(I'm answering in the off chance that you're asking the question seriously, David...)
Provided you have a video clip in your multitrack project, Soundtrack Pro will feed that video (via FireWire or PCI Capture Card) to an external monitor. (This needs to be setup in your Preferences first, of course). STP even uses the same shortcut as FCP to toggle External Video On/Off - Command-F12.
As for the question posted originally, LiveType does not have external monitoring because it works with Animation codec files - files which are way too beefy to play both on your computer monitor and send externally unless there is some type of GPU (or other hardware) acceleration, like there is with Motion. (and, of course, there is no hardware acceleration for LiveType currently)
Though I agree, it would be awesome to have external monitoring for LiveType.

  • How to view YouTube video through search engines

Flash Player version 10.1.102.64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users. However, this Flash version won't work for many videos on Facebook, YouTube and other sites. Adobe's latest version, 10.2.x or later, is only for Intel Macs. Adobe will not provide a newer Flash version for PPC Macs.
The message requesting that you download Adobe Flash Player takes you to Flash Player requiring an Intel processor. Doesn't work on a PowerPC processor. I found a hack, installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari.
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

  • Viewing only videos in the camera roll

How can I only view videos like I could with IOS 6 which let you choose in the upper right hand corner if you just wanted to look at photos or just videos.
    Thanks!

    No, sorry.
The only way now is you'll see the movie camera image superimposed on the thumbnail for the videos and at the bottom of the camera roll, you'll see a photo count and video count displayed.

  • Sqeaking watery sound over the top of external video?!

    Hi,
I was about to do some more work on a Heathrow video I am editing and I am outputting to external video through my camera. When I play any video or audio, the sound that is played through the external video is a high pitched squeaking wailing running water sound?! I need to be able to output video for colour work, but the audio is just a pain in the nuts. Whats wrong?
    Thanks.

Is Heathrow a new video format? What camera would that be?
Your description isn't working for me which means we can't talk about "audio," only water noises.
First flush is that you have recorded improperly at a lower sampling rate.

  • Capture a photo or video through my web cam

Greeting for the day to every one !!
I am trying to provide a facility in my project that any one capture his photo or video through web cam in their own computer. Is it possible in oracle /d2k ?? if yes please help me regarding this. How can i invoke my web cam through oracle/d2k and capture the photo.
    Any one help me ..

You will have to free some space up on your iPhone. Buying more iCloud storage will not increase the capacity of your iPhone. For the most part iCloud storage is for your iOS backups, documents such as iWork files and iCloud email. Aside from iTunes Match and PhotoStreams which do not count towards iCloud storage you can not store media files on iCloud. PhotoStream is not a photo backup service nor does it support video yet, it's intended use is for sharing and transferring photos to other devices.
Not sure of your setup but chances are you have a lot of video and photos on your iPhone taking up your storage space. These should be copied over to a computer where they can be properly backed up and organize. Once organized you can transfer them back to the iPhone through iTunes. You can sync a smaller number to free space. Or since you have a copy on the computer it is now possible to delete the photos from your iPhone when have the need to make a new video. Settings/General/Usage/Photos & Camera then swipe sideways to reveal the delete button is a quick way to delete photos in the library when you need more space. Ensure you still have a backup on a PC and an external drive.

  • Canvas View Not Following External Video

Hello, everyone. I've had this problem before, and somehow managed to figure out how to fix it, but I'm having it again, and - for the life of me - it's stumping the heck out of me and I haven't been able to figure out how to undo it.
My external monitor is indeed playing the timeline sequence realtime, but the video on the Canvas is frozen. It only shows the frame I'm on when I stop playback.
My caps lock button is NOT on (that's happened before and I undid it).
    View>External Video>All Frames
    Video Playback>Apple Firewire NTSC (720X480)
Audio Playback>Firewire 410 [this is the audio device I use for playback]
    Show Multiclip Angles is UNchecked
    I'm stumped!
It's always been a quick fix before - a button I accidentally pressed or unpressed - but I haven't figured it out this time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you very much,
    Javier Calderon

Also, and by the way, this is a feature I've been working on for a few months now - so it's a problem that just arose on a project I've been sailing decently on for a while now. Additionally, it seems to be something I did to FCP itself - and not to the specific project sequence I'm working on, because I opened up two other sequences to see if they were working well . . . and those other sequences weren't either. The other sequences had the same issue - letting me, again, know that it's some issue with the overall FCP program settings perhaps as opposed to the specific project I'm on.

  • Print to vide/External video not working in FCP, PLEASE HELP

I have the FCP HD 4.5 and am having difficulty communicating to my Panasonic PV-800. Capture is great, but when trying to view external video or print to video, the default blue screen of my cameras vtr mode is distorted and no video comes through. I have refreshed AV devices and have check all frames in the external video menus. When i pause the playback, the still frame appears on my camera, then if i resume playback, the video does not come through, but only distorts the blue screen. I made sure the settings were correct and even found an apple site that told me to copy two plugins from the FCP CD, and i did that. I also did the quicktime fix where u delete the reciepts and download the latest version of Quicktime, still same videoless situation.
I feel like i've tried everything. Please if anyone can help, i gotta get something printed to video soon!

    after doing everything it was:
Shutdown everything, power up connected camera, power up external drive, power up computer, launch fcp, and it worked. I dunno if the restart was a part of the process of one of my other things that i did or whatever. Maybe that's just how my computer reacts. Anyways, hope that helps anyone frustrated.

  • External Video will only show black or current frame

    Hello,
I am on an Intel Mac using FCP 5.1.2. This is my first time trying to view an external monitor using FCP, but I have done it in the past with Media 100 and Premiere.
Right now, when I try to view the Timeline or Canvas, all I am getting is the black screen not what is currently on the timeline. If I go to View > External Video > Show Current, I will get the current image, but it just stays on that, no matter what is showing on the timeline or Canvas. If I double click a clip so it opens in the Viewer, it shows that clip and stays on that as a freeze frame. I can hear the audio through my external speakers just fine.
So far I have done many searches on "external video" on this forum and looked up in all my manuals and Apple Training books, but no luck. Here's the list of all the things I tried.
My setup: MacPro > Sony TCRDV8 NTSC camcorder via firewire > camcorder to TV via audio/video cables. My external speakers are hooked up to the camcorder.
I have tried restarting FCP as well as rebooting my MacPro after connnecting everything, removed the tape from the camcorder, made sure it was on VTR.
I have also checked all the suggested Audio/Video Settings, all the things under View, like External Video, Video Playback and refresh A/V devices.
It seems odd that I can hear the video and see the current frame or other freeze frames, but it's not showing the motion on the timeline. Everything is rendered. Is my video camera too old for FCP?
I probably should not spend any more time on this but it's making crazy, I keep thinking that if I try just one more thing I will figure it out.
Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.
MacPro 2.66 8 GB RAM Final Cut Pro 5.1.2   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   A very old Sony TCRDV8 NTSC camcorder

Thanks for your answer. The window hanging off is a good suggestion, but still didn't work... I also tried switching my windows to the standard setting and still nothing. I've tried the window size thing before but I tried again and no luck.
In the meantime, I checked to see if Apple System Profiler sees my DV cam and it does, and even has the correct name and model number.
I wonder if it has something to do with the viewer window, it's always stuck on the same thing? Right now it's one of my movie clips. I've tried dragging the sequence to the viewer but it doesn't help. I am missing some tiny little detail?
