Viewing on an external monitor?

I currently use an AJA T-tap to view my output on an external monitor. I have heard that with the new Mac Pro I can view pixel to pixel using HDMI. Is that true? And how do you do it? No longer a need for the T-Tap?
Best.
Tom

Yes, you can do AV monitoring in the new Mac Pro straight off the HDMI port.
Just plug a full HD or even 4K monitor with an HDMI cable.
Note however that this capability is, so far, on the Mac Pro only; although the Retina MBP also have an HDMI port, and you can connect a second display to it, you'd still need something like the AJA T-tap to do true AV monitoring.

  • Viewing video on external monitor

Using an external monitor. I am able to view the desktop on this monitor. However, I am unable to view my video on this monitor. What "Preference" settings do I need to enable me to view my video. Using Final Cut Pro 4.5. External monitor is JVC TM1400SU.

I have the first selection as "None" followed by the others
4 -Digital Cinema Desktop Preview selections. None
is selected. (Is that the default setting?) I don't
see a selection for my external monitor.

Wow -- slow down and read the posts.
Hook up your external monitor BEFORE starting FCP.
    Start FCP
View - External Video -- ALL FRAMES
View - Video Playback -- Apple Firewire (etc.) Use one of these based on where you are from and the size of your video.
DO NOT use desktop preview!! You'll be messed up and have NO way of figuring out how to get out of it.
    then...
View - Audio Playback -- Take your pick from the three... but make sure you've got all the correct buttons on your external source configured correctly.
Take your time and read the posts. You'll get it figured out.

  • Viewing ipad1 on external monitor

    Hi,
I realize I cannot "mirror" everything I see on my ipad1 on an external monitor. I'm able to view videos on my external monitor using my VGA adapter, but the video is not displayed on my ipad at the same time. Is this possible for videos?
    Thanks!
    ~Frank

Different devices you're using. The VGA is for the basic normal projector, while the HDMI is primarily on HD TV sets. I'm sure there are some HDMI projectors out there, but the vast majority are VGA. (One of the funnier moments of the iPad2 keynote was Jobs describing all the teachers mirroring on the flat screen TV's in their classrooms - since then I've gone to a number of educational technology conferences and meetings, and have yet to find a teacher with a flatscreen instead of a VGA projector ).
I believe the VGA can't output the full HD image, while of course the HDMI can.

  • Viewing HDV on external monitor

Hello, is there anyway to view HDV footage on an external monitor? Aside from creating a DV sequence from the HDV footage? If not please tell me why. I am using a Sony HDV deck. Any help would be appreciate. Thanks!

  • Viewing on an external monitor with 16:9 ratio

Can someone tell all the available resolution when viewing in a 16:9 external monitor?, i know the macbook is 16:10 so what happens in this circumstances?

A Mac notebook can be set to display two different ways when attached to an external screen. One way is to mirror the two displays. This means both will use the exact same format and show the exact same information. The highest common format the two screens support will be the default. Since one is 16:9 and one is 16:10, there will be black bars surrounding the image on one screen or the other.
The other way a Mac can run the second screen is independently, called extended desktop mode. Under that scenario (mirroring turned off), the two screens are free to display whatever is their native format, so the 16:9 will display a 16:9 format and the Mac will be at its native 16:10.
As to what will be the available resolutions for the 16:9 external display, that is established by the display's EDID, not the Mac, so the question can't be answered. There are really few limits on the Mac in this regard. Depending on the display, the Mac should be able to output formats like 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 720, 2048 x 1152, 1600 x 900 just to name a few.

  • Multicamera angle's view out to external monitor?

    Hello Forum,
Is it possible to have the angle view of multicamera viewable via transmit to my external monitor?  (via Blackmagic Intensity Pro)
Currently, it only displays the active angle.
    Thanks all!

You could get a Canopus box and put the video out firewire to a video monitor that composite video in.
To do this the video needs to be a DV stream.
If the video is the new hi def standard with a framerate of 23.97, you will see picture but it won't be frame accurate sync.
If you have a G5 or a Mac Pro you could get another video card and display the video on that.

  • Is it possible to view on an external monitor while working in DVDSP ??

Is there a way to output DVDSP to an external reference monitor ? This would be really helpful when working on menus/overlays so i can see exactly what it will look like on an external monitor. Thanks

This is not a guess it could, but a report of how I get the results of what you want to accomplish. I take the firewire 400 port of my MacPro, plug it vai a firewire cable into the firewire port of my DVD recorder, and then take the composite video output of the DVD recorder and plug it in to the composite input of my monitor. I also connect the audio out from the DVD recorder to the audio input of my monitor. It works... Do it all the time. Make sure to set the input on your DVD recorder to DV.

  • Final Cut Pro X will not playback viewer contents on external monitor

Tried to follow directions to Playback the Final Cut ProX Viewer on a separate monitor.
Option Window > A/V Output greyed out. how do I use a second Monitor to view results?

Typically you need A/V output hardware from AJA or Blackmagic (and they are recommended for various reasons) but if you want to use your TV or display as a second monitor and also use them for FCP X playback then the trick is to disable the Mavericks feature in Mission Control: "Displays have separate spaces"

  • Viewing on SD external monitor through Z1

    Hello all,
I posted this same message a few months ago but then went away so it went off the boil, hence my repost so apologies for that. Here's my problem, I'm trying to colour correct on my broadcast monitor. Initially the project was HDV but i downconverted to SD. I have connected my Z1 through firewire 400 to the computer and then the Camera is connected to the monitor by an S-Video cable. I have done this before with a PD170 and it has worked fine, but with the Z1 i get no signal on the camera or monitor. The monitor says no Sync, but if i try and play back a tape from the camera it shows up on the monitor.
My settings for the Z1 are
    Rec Format – DV
    Rec Mode – Dvcam
    Component - 576i
    i.link conversion – on
    Down Convert – Squeeze
    A/V - DV out - on
I have checked that View is on firewire pal and that it is all frames. So i'm kinda confused any help would be much appreciated.
    Fred

I'm pretty sure the HDV cameras won't do this even though you've down converted. i.e. the hardware to transcode DV digital coming into the FW port on the camera to analog isn't there. You'll need something else. The coolest thing I've seen for HDV users to monitor externally with is Matrox's MXO... very cool little box. That way you could monitor the HDV in SD all day long.
But if you're going to down convert to DV anyway, then an ADVC-110 will do the trick.

  • View Content on External Monitor

    Hi everyone,
I have a HD external TV monitor hooked up to my Final Cut editing system in this manner...FireWire out to my Panasonic deck, then component to the HD TV monitor.
The problem is that the video is grainy, there's ghosting, and also the monitor's picture jumps. How should I do this. I was looking into TV out video cards for the mac and hope that I can go HDMI out to HDMI in. Is this possible? What are your suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Unfortunately, that solution won't work.
From the BlackMagic site, "Compatible with Microsoft Windows™ and Apple Intel based Mac Pro systems. Apple Power PC systems are not yet supported."
That is if your are talking about using it with the G5 as indicated in your specs. If you really have a MacPro then this may just work.
What exactly are you trying to monitor over FW? DVCPRoHD should work, but HDV will be a downres signal that will look like poo on an HD monitor.

  • External monitor view looks stretched

Over the weekend, I ventured into the world of Mac ownership with a new macbook pro.  At my office, I've connected it to a 23" external monitor just to make it easier on my eyes.  When I first set it up last night, the view on the external monitor looked stretched or a like blown up version of what's on my computer screen.  (FTR, I have mirror display turned on because I'm keeping the macbook on a shelf under my desk and just want to work from the one screen.)  I messed with the resolution size of the external monitor but that didn't fix the problem.
Today, when I came in and hooked everything up, the screen looked like how I originally expected it to look - not stretched or any of that junk. Just very crisp and clean - exactly the way I wanted it.  Then a bit ago, I tried to mess with clamshell mode and for some reason, that made the external monitor go back to being stretched.  I've tried restarting several times and unplugging the DVI->mini display port converter but it's not fixing it.
I have no idea what I did right this morning, but can anyone help me?  It's a stupid problem, for sure but it's annoying staring at this stretched screen.

Try this instead, hit CMD F1 to place the monitor in extended desktop mode,  It should look good again.
Go to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab > notice the grey "menubar" at the top of the left display.  Move it to your other monitor display.  This will control which monitor has the dock and menubar.  If the external monitor is not available, it moves back to the MBpro.

  • Cannot view high quality on external monitor - Prores 422?

I am working on a music video and trying the Prores 422 codec for the first time. When I view the clips from the viewer in Final Cut pro I can insert in and outpoints as normal and watch the clips on my external monitor in full quality and that is all good (full quality and full screen 1080P).
But when I drag the clip into the timeline it becomes green. When I view the film on my external monitor now the resolution drops a bit and the quality looks coarse. Then I render it, but the same result occur (bad qality during viewing og the external monitor). I have managed good preview quality before (working with full quality, although that was from another camera and with a different codec, but still 1080P). I am using a laptop / Macbook Pro, 2.5 GHZ intel with 4GB of ram and an esata external drives + additinal FW 800 drives externally.

I did encode with Clipwrap (Prores 422 and for audio Convert Audio to LPCM). It seems Final Cut Pro does not recognize the settings as the sequence settings were to low.... as you said.
I tried changing the sequence settings to Prores 422 1920x1080 / 50i, with no change (it seemed like).
The camera I was shooting with is the Panasonic SD700 which shots at 50i (60 in the us).

  • IMac, external monitor flicker/blink blue

I have an external monitor hooked up to my iMac and I have had no problems until today. It's the mini-DVI to VGA style connector.
During the day, I jarred my desk with my knee. The iMac and external monitor both blinked about four times, becoming blue like in the startup process. The view on the external monitor also went fuzzy for a second. No CPU functions appear to have been affected.
I shut down, checked all the cable connections, and restarted. The problem seemed to be resolved - until later when I was using the computer, and the same thing happened twice in about two minutes. This time the desk hadn't moved at all. Again, no CPU functions appear to have been affected.
In the Console, I see these messages at the time of the events:
    <Error>: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSGetDisplayBounds (display 3e41b5b9)
    kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSGetCurrentDisplayMode
    kernel
EDID does not contain Extended EDID, not valid for audio
A search seems to indicate that it may be cable-related, which is the best-case scenario, and I'm hoping it's not the graphics card or logic board.
Can anything be done to stop this from reoccurring?

Now it appears the problem has gotten worse. Much worse.
I've had the external monitor disconnected for five days now. I tried to plug it back in and the computer did not recognize it AT ALL. Nothing showed up on the display.
In addition, or however, the mouse movement on the iMac itself became very, very unresponsive.
Once I disconnected the monitor, everything on the iMac was functioning normally.
Have I messed something up inside the iMac?

  • Possible to view quicktime in full screen on external monitor?

    Hey All!
Im wondering if there is any way to view quicktime movies in full screen (or use front row for that matter) on an external desktop set up us as an extended desktop (as opposed to mirror). This seems like quite a dumb thing to not be able to do.

This is a problem for most software on the mac, especially games. My experience has been most software uses the primary - in this case the macbook lcd - as its display monitor. There are a few ways to fudge it to force it on another screen, but quite frankly I find that the only way to use a macbook pro and external monitor is with the lid closed.
This is generally the best solution as the menu bar is always stuck on the primary anyway.
To use the macbook closed simply wake the computer from sleep with an external keyboard or mouse the laptop and the primary will now be the external monitor.
The only real downside is how do I now use the isight????

  • Viewer and External Monitor doesn't playback at same time

When watching clips in the viewer window, they playback fine. But on my external monitor, it only shows the first frame from when it's played. when I stop playback, the external monitor then shows the last frame the Viewer window is stopped on. How can I fix it so that the viewer and external monitor playback the clip at the same time?
At the moment we're digitizing footage with the Offline RT Photo JPEG codec set to 75% quality.
A few days ago we were digitizing footage at 35% quality and that footage plays back fine. We moved to 75% quality at the editor's request. A few days ago we had created a few sample 75% quality tests for the editor to view. I loaded those clips into Final Cut right now and they playback fine as well. So it's all of a sudden just these new clips created yesterday :S.

    Yes.
Forgot to mention that the timeline plays all the footage back properly on both the canvas window and the external monitor. Sorry for not mentioning that sooner.
More discoveries! The playback 'freeze' only happens if I open a clip from the browser into the viewer. If I open a clip from the timeline into the viewer, it plays-back fine!
