Views in MDM

Dear MDM Experts,
1.
how can I define views for user groups in MDM? As I saw usage of masks are not too good for this, because when new items come into the repository, the Catalog Manager should everytime renew the masks. Am I right?
Can I define dinamic rules for views? For example I add a new field: VIEW IDs. If this VIEW ID field contains the 'View01' string the item is in the view V01, etc, if 'View02' the item is in the view V02. I would like to load this field from an Excel file, is it possible?
Is there any simplier solution?
2.
Maybe my problem can be solved by using Constraints Records (Roles/Tables and Fields).
I tried this:
In MDM Console
1. I copied the set of table Suppliers and create a table VIEWS with a field VIEW ID (as Supplier Name)
2. add a new field to table Catalog Items: VIEW (like Supplier - Lookup, flat)
In Data Manager
3. add some entries to table VIEWS (view01; view02; view03)
4. by some Catalog Items select view01 in the field VIEW
In MDM Console
5. the User1 has only one role: Catalog User
6. on the tab Tables and Fields of role 'Catalog User' select view01 for Constraint Record of VIEWS
After loading repository I looked the catalog on web by the User2. I saw all of the items, the filter with view01 didn't worked.
(When I set contraint one of Suppliers, the filter worked. Why is it?)
Thanks,
A

Hello:
I haven't yet seen any functionality that could serve for your. As you mention, the closest thing would be to use Views, but I don't see a (standard) way to dinamically assign records to those views.
You could, however, use the Java API and create a program that checks the field you added. Let's say you have 3 groups of users, and create a mask for each of them (mask1, mask2, mask3) and in this field, depending on the value, have your Java program assign the record to the appropiated mask.
This java program would have to be constantly running though, like a a daemon,
I hope this helps

  • MDM Server : NetWeaver installation is not necessary?

I have been assigned in a project which will require the usage of MDM for ironing data information between our Siebel and SAP system. I have got the information that in order to install MDM server, NetWeaver installation is not necessary.
I guess this is correct but from your experience, is it also recommended?
The installation will be on Linux with ORACLE DB.
    Thanks in advance,
    Loukas

    Hi Loukas,
if you want to use MDM, you (at least) need:
    - a Database Server, Oracle is fine
    - the MDM Server
    - MDM Console for Repository maintenance
    - MDM DataManager for viewing data
    - MDM ImportManager for importing data
    - MDM Syndicator for exporting data
You definitely do not need the whole Netweaver stuff - no application server or anything like that. However, if you want to integrate MDM into your system landscape, SAP XI is recommended to act a a message broker between any system and MDM. I don't know the requirements of XI.
You can run MDM Server on a single machine, together with the database and all the client tools can be on different machines.
I hope this helps. If you need further information, we'd need a more specific desciption of the requirements.
    Best regards,
    Martin

  • SAP MDM, ORACLE MDM, Microsoft MDM and IBM MDM

Could someone discuss the differences and similarities between these MDMs-
SAP MDM, ORACLE MDM, Microsoft MDM and IBM MDM. Who is/will dominate the Market?
    Thank you.
    Priya.

    Hi priya k  ,
These r the details regarding MDMs-SAP MDM, ORACLE MDM, Microsoft MDM and IBM MDM.
    SAP Master Data Management
SAP Master Data Management (SAP MDM) enables master data on customers, partners and products to be consolidated and harmonized across the enterprise, making it available to all staff and business partners. A key component of SAP NetWeaver, SAP MDM ensures data integrity across all IT systems.
The SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management (SAP NetWeaver MDM) component of SAP NetWeaver creates the preconditions for enterprise services and business process management. The functionality represents customers, products, employees, vendors, and user-defined data objects in unified form. With SAP NetWeaver MDM, customers can manage master data and supplemental content, such as texts, PDF documents, high-resolution images, or diagrams in a central business information warehouse.
SAP Master Data Management (SAP MDM) is a component of SAP's NetWeaver product group and is used as a platform to consolidate, cleanse and synchronise a single version of the truth for master data within a heterogeneous application landscape. It has the ability to distribute internally and externally to SAP and non-SAP applications. SAP MDM is a key enabler of SAP Enterprise Service-Oriented Architecture. Standard system architecture would consist of a single central MDM server connected to client systems through SAP Exchange Infrastructure using XML documents, although connectivity without SAP XI can also be achieved. There are five standard implementation scenarios:
Content Consolidation - centralised cleansing, de-duplication and consolidation, enabling key mapping and consolidated group reporting in SAP BI. No re-distribution of cleansed data.
Master Data Harmonisation - as for Content Consolidation, plus re-distribution of cleansed, consolidated master data.
Central Master Data Management - as for Master Data Harmonisation, but all master data is maintained in the central MDM system. No maintenance of master data occurs in the connected client systems.
Rich Product Content Management - Catalogue management and publishing. Uses elements of Content Consolidation to centrally store rich content (images, PDF files, video, sound etc.) together with standard content in order to produce product catalogues (web or print). Has standard adapters to export content to DTP packages.
Global Data Synchronization - provides consistent trade item information exchange with retailers through data hubs (e.g. 1SYNC) Some features (for example, workflow) require custom development out of the box to provide screens for end users to use.
    History
SAP is currently on its second iteration of MDM software. Facing limited adoption of its initial release, SAP changed direction and in 2004 purchased a small vendor in the PIM space called A2i. This code has become the basis for the currently shipping SAP MDM 5.5, and as such, most analysts consider SAP MDM to be more of a PIM than a general MDM product at this time.

    Oracle MDM
Oracle MDM is a core “Fusion” technology that will enable them to integrate their diverse portfolio of acquired solutions (PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, Siebel, etc.) and allow them to work together much more effectively.MDM is also a key component of Oracle’s middleware strategy to aggressively target heterogeneous environments – solutions running on different databases, operating systems, and using different data warehouse or analytical solutions. Oracle is a leading provider of ERP and CRM applications, but more broadly they are a provider of core platform solutions that help pull together and harmonise all a company’s IT assets.”
Master Data Management solutions provide the ability to consolidate and federate master information from disparate systems and lines of business into one central data repository or “hub.” As part of its Master Data Management strategy, Oracle offers solutions that enable customers to synchronise critical information in a single, central location to achieve an accurate, 360-degree view of data, whether from packaged, legacy or custom applications. Oracle offers the following solutions:
Oracle Product Information Management Data Hub – Enables companies to centralise, manage and synchronise all product information with heterogeneous systems and trading partners.
Oracle Customer Hub – Centralises, de-duplicates and enriches customer data, continuously synchronising with other data sources across the enterprise, to provide a single, accurate, authoritative source of customer information throughout the enterprise.
Oracle Financial Consolidation Hub – Allows companies to control the financial consolidation process by integrating and automating data synchronisation, currency translation, inter-company eliminations, acquisitions and disposals.
“Clean, consolidated and accurate master data distributed throughout the enterprise can save companies millions of dollars annually. With Oracle, organisations are equipped to leverage the best data management practices available today to help dramatically increase operating efficiencies, improve customer loyalty and ensure corporate governance.
MDM solutions provide the ability to consolidate and federate disparate systems and lines of business into one central data repository. Acxiom is the world's largest processor of consumer data and collects and manages more than a billion records a day for its customers, which include nine of the country's top ten credit-card issuers and most major retail banks, insurers and automakers. By integrating Acxiom's consumer data with Oracle's comprehensive MDM solutions, Oracle plans to provide customers with a pre-packaged, content-enriched customer information repository with unprecedented levels of data quality. This hybrid approach to customer data management will help clients conduct better, faster and easier MDM projects and perform more targeted marketing campaigns to cross-sell and up-sell into existing customer accounts.
Oracle's MDM solutions serve as a customer data hub to unify customer data across multiple business units and functionally disparate systems. Oracle's comprehensive functionality manages customer data over the entire lifecycle: from capturing customer data, to cleansing addresses and spelling, identifying potential duplicates, consolidating duplicates, enhancing customer profiles with external data and distributing the authoritative customer profile to the operational systems.

  • Global Attributes to be considered for Material Master

    Hello Experts,
I am working on Material Consolidation in MDM where in I have to consolidate the Material master from three different SAP systems in SAP MDM then harmonize the data back to each of these ECC systems. Centralization using portal will follow once this is done.
All the mentioned ECC systems are three entirely different business working independently
To define the enterprise data model there are two questions for which I am looking for answers based on Best practises standpoint and with your experiences in MDM projects
Question 1: Is it a good practice to maintain Plant, Sales org, Purchase org and Classification data and other Local data in SAP MDM  Material repository for all the three ECCsystems. I understand this would unnecessarily load the repositoryu. But still looking for your experiences to explore whether there is any business benefit to do this.
Question 2: Let's assume that we maintain only the Global attributes in SAP MDM for material repository then in that case , how do we define the material at global level. From my standpoint Material Global repository should have following fields which would uniquely define the material
(Material Description, Base unit of Measure, Material Type, Industry Sector, Alternative Unit of Measure, Material Group)
Is it the right approach or should I consider some other attributes as well?
Moreover If I define these as Global Attributes then these definitions will have to imposed on the all the three ECC systems which would be a major change as all of the three have different definitions for the abovementioned attributes.
Request your valuable inputs on what should feasible and practical best approach.
    Best Regards
    Manoj

    Hi Manoj,
This is something which comes to every consultants mind
See this is something very abstract and answer can vary from case to case depending on many parameters like :
    1.Client/Businessrequirement.
    2.Scenario requirement.(CMDM,Consolidation etc)
    3.System Landscape.
    4.Performance.
    5.Product capability.
    And many more.
In my experience I have had a material scenario with only one ERP system having and only one company code.Clients requirement was to have most of the plant related data into MDM as it was a CMDM scenario. So I did take most of the views into MDM system including Location Data,Valuation data,Quality data,Classification data and Sales Data.It worked well there.
However I was a part of another project where we had multiple ERP systems in landscape. It had multiple company codes and client wanted to keep only global data in MDM,after going into ERP system plant relevant data was populated.
So it totally depends and one only has to take a informed decision,I would suggest you prepare a attribute analysis matrix of fields global in nature and then after understanding the relation between fields take a call on data model.

  • Change Tracker Performance Impact

    MDM: 7.1
    CE: 7.2
    ERP: 6.0 EHP4
    Hi,
We are currently using CE/BPM based central master data management. A custom application is being developed for collaborative master data authoring.
As part of the MDM configuration, the client wishes to track changes on MDM records for audit purposes. We are looking at the MDM Change Tracking facility provided by SAP but not sure about the performance impact it will have on the MDM server.
We have over 300 attributes for the object we wish to track for changes. Not all attributes will change all the time but it is expected that the overall number of changes every month will be over 1000, each change including approx 20-30 fields. The number of users is expected to be approx 15 initially but will increase over time.
I have seen on SCN forums people talking about potential performance degrade by enabling change tracking. Has anyone actually experienced performance degrade due to enabling change tracking for MDM records? If so, have you tried any means to keep the impact low e.g. by allocating more resources to MDM server?
    Thanks and regards,

    Hi,
Change histoey does have impact on system performance. this can be controlled via regular archiving of Change History database. Lets say, Change history table data older than 3 months can be stored in another repository.
Second option could be to export all Change History data(Older than 1-2 days) to a BI system(using regular scheduled job), and have change hisotry report there. It will bring drastci change in MDM System performance. 1-2 days data can be viewed from MDM Change history database itself.

  • Viewing PDF in MDM Catalog

    Hi Gurus,
I have imported PDF into MDM successfully. Unfortunately when i browse thru the MDM catalog, i able to see a whole string of file link information and cannot view the PDF.
Anyone knows the PDF viewing works in catalog view?
    Many thanks,
    GG

    Hi Adrivit,
Unfortunately I do not agree with your last suggestion i.e. changing the field type/length. Below are my thoughts:
    1. Once the field is defined and saved in MDM then in most of the cases system doesn't allow to update the Field type. Yes, for some field types it allows, but very minimal options will be available. This field is defined as "Text" field with 250 characters. By design, MDM System won't allow you to change this field to any other field type. Yes, MDM will allow you to change it to "text normalized", but that won't help in this case, as text normalized also got same length restriction.
    2. Maximum length restriction of a text field is 333 characters.
    3. In SRM-MDM Catalog scenario, I do not consider it a best practice to change the standard fields/tables, especially when we don't know impact of the change on standard SRM-MDM Search UI and Catalog UI applications.
    Glen,
if your URLs are too long then I can think of only two ways:
    1. Copy your PDF from old location to new location (if it shortens the Path URL)
    OR
    2. Use some free URL generators to shorten the long URLs.
In case none of above solution is feasible for you, then Please check with SAP on this before making any change in the repository.

  • MDM DB Views - Can we create in SP08?

    Hi All,
MDM DB Views - Can we create in MDM 7.1 SP08? Please share the steps to be followed for this.
    Regards,
    ganga

    Hi Ganga,
DB Views is not part of the standard shipment of 7.1. However it could be provided to customers by an SAP consultant on a project basis.
DB Views in SP08 aren't officially supported, you can however generate the views using a standalone java utility described in SAP Note 1556213, again please note that since It is not part of the official released MDM product it will not be supported by SAP. No enhancements or bug support will be given so my recommendation would be to upgrade to SP10+.
Please see below link that answers few important questions:
    http://scn.sap.com/message/9423798#9423798
More information on DB views can be found in the MDM 7.1 SP10 Console Reference Guide in the section "Generating and Deleting MDM DB Views".
    Hope this information helps!

  • MDM Console - security and views

    Hi,
I access MDM console remotely on the Windows 2003 server that hosts the MDM system and locally on my own laptop. Both machines run the same version of MDM Console 5.5 SP6 (5.5.63.87) and I have Admin access.
When I view the repository on the Windows 2003 server I can see detailed information (individual fields and detail) when I view the repository from my laptop I can only see the detail.
If I use PORTS as an example. On the Windows 2003 server I can see a list of the ports and when I click on them I can see the port definition. On my local machine all I can see is the port detail (eg, the table definition).
As I have the same version of MDM Console installted on both machines (I have even checked the executable size and date) I'm at a loss to understand why the repository looks different when accessed from the server and my machine.
I have checked the MDM Console Guide and that doesn't offer an insight. I am still searching SDN without any luck.
    Your advice is appreciated.

    Rob
This might sound silly but are you sure the detail panel in MDM Console has not been pulled up to the top?
Can you attach a screenshot with the Port example?
