Virgin Mobile Broadband incompatible with Snow Leopard?

*Has anyone had this same problem?*
After I installed Snow Leopard, it was not compatible with some of my software (specifically: Virgin USB Mobile Broadband) and I ended up having to revert to Leopard 10.5.8. It seemed there was nothing else I could do as the software would not work at all on the new OSX. It just kept crashing. As it is my internet software and the only access I have to the net from my Macbook, I wasn't able to gain access to the net to try and get an update or a fix from the Virgin Site, or Apple.com.
Does anyone have any idea when things like this will be ironed out In Snow Leopard? As I don't want to reinstall it knowing that my internet software will be incompatible again.
*Thanks heaps in advance. Soph*

The software installed as part of the virgin mobile broadband is coded to look for a 10.5.* or less. It crashes when it finds 10.6.*
As a work around i installed the huawei driver and manually configured the APN and dialup preferences and it worked fine and used far less CPU time
When i called Virgin tech support they were pretty vague and said that a hotfix should be available in a few weeks!!

  • Acrobat 9 seems incompatible with Snow Leopard

Got my Snow Leopard late this afternoon and have had great luck with it so far (did an upgrade, not a clean install)...except for Acrobat 9. Ugh! Attempting to print to PDF via Adobe PDF 9.0 printer/driver causes the printer/driver to fire up and the progress windows indicates that distiller launches, but after that, the prompt for where to save the PDF to never appears and the file in the print queue disappears. Checking the log file shows quite a few errors are happening:

I've done a full uninstall and cleaned out all files, then reinstalled. I did the old repair/restore trick from the Help menu. I even tried printing to PDF after each patch/upgrade all the way to the latest version. No luck at all. And yes, all other CS4 apps I have work fine.
    Any suggestions?

Hi all, things are still working for me. [Edit: not quite, see below.]
I've just successfully used the Save as Adobe PDF option from three different apps (current versions of Numbers, TextWrangler, Word), using both Standard and PDF-X options selected from the dialog box when printing.
I'm on an early 2008 MacBook Pro, OS 10.6 and Acrobat Pro 9.1.3 (I guess those last two are pretty clear).
Oh, wait, here's a new error.
Save as Adobe PDF quit unexpectedly while using the Adobe BIB plugin.
This error occurred when I selected Save as Adobe PDF from Safari while composing this message. I selected Press Quality from the printing options. I've just tried printing at Standard quality, and that works. In fact, Press Quality is now working again too!

  • Late 2007 model Incompatible with snow leopard?

Hello. I have a White Late 2007 model (the first with the x3100) macbook running at 2.0 ghz, with 2 gb ram and a 120gb hard drive.
After installing 10.6 from the retail Mac boxed set My screen backlight started to randomly die. Eventually it got so bad that the backlight would just flash on start up and go black after that.
Last night i loaded the Mac os X 10.5 retail DVD. and Low and behold, Backlight works Perfectly.
I now have the problem that It will not let me install Leopard. I have used disk utility to wipe the hard drive clean. But the installer gets to the "Use english for main language" section and then after pressing the continue button, says that "Mac os X cannot be installed on this computer"
i press "ok" and load the installer log
which says that the error is something along the lines of "installer tried to create a new folder with UID=0" or something about a new folder and UID=0
I have tried the retail 10.5.0 dvd, the Original 10.5.0 restore disks that came with the macbook, the 10.5.2 Imac restore disks and the 10.6 retail and restore disks that came with both the boxed set and the 13"macbook pro. Same problem. "Mac os X Cannot Be installed on this computer"
Before i installed Snow leopard i did have a leopard and ubuntu 9 installation on the machine, and deleted both via a fresh install.
Any ideas?. I have tried reseting the PMU/PRAM, no effect.

Have you formatted the drive? Sounds like you erased the drive but you haven't formatted it. In Disk Utility, under the Partition Tab, you need to select a number of partitions (usually 1) from the drop-down where it says Current. Give the drive a name (usually Macintosh HD). Next select GUID Partition Table by clicking the Options button located just under the hard drive graphic. When you do all of this, hit the Partition button at the bottom and let it do its thing. When you did the Erase, did you choose the Mac Extended (Journaled) format?
If this is unclear, there is a section on preparing a new drive in [*This Tutorial*|http://www.macinstruct.com/node/130] that has pictures and explanations.
Once you have it partitioned, you should be able to install off of the restore disks from your MacBook.

Does anyone know how to solve these iphoto problems?

Terrance thank you so much for responding. I was able to finally get my photo library to open by resetting the permissions then completing an upgrade. I accomplished this by reading through a number of posts here by you and others. Therefore I extend my thanks to you and everyone in the support network.

  • Novatel Wireless Merlin X950D not working with Snow Leopard

I've just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard and my Merlin X950D 3G broadband card has stopped working.
When I insert the card sometimes it's detected but won't connect, sometimes it's detected but only after being inserted for some time (5 mins or longer) and still won't connect, other times it's just not being detected at all.
I've tried on a clean install of Snow Leopard using the built-in WWAN drivers and I've also tried with Novatel's drivers. In both cases I've tried booting Snow Leopard in 32 and 64 bit modes. Can't think what else to do; has anyone got any ideas?

    I found a solution.
Download the older Novatel drivers (2.2.3) from this site:
    http://www.nvtl.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=174:macosxtiger -novatelevdo&catid=42:mac-installation-i
After a reboot, your modem will work fine. Something in the 3.0 drivers is incompatible with Snow Leopard.

  • How to configure a Snow base station with Snow Leopard?

According to "Mac OS X v10.6: About incompatible software"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258?viewlocale=en_US
...AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5 is incompatible with Snow Leopard.
I have a Snow AirPort Base Station, and AirPort Utility 5.4.2 doesn't seem to be able to see it. (At least I can't figure out how to make it do so.) Can it not work with a Snow Base Station?
    Now what?

One solution is to keep a pre-Snow Leopard OS installation (either on another partition or external drive) and then boot from that when you need to configure the snow AirPort base station (ABS).
Another solution is to use another Mac running a pre-Snow Leopard OS to configure the snow ABS.
Since the snow ABS was discontinued 6 years ago I can understand why support is going away.
The last PowerPC was shipped only 3 years ago and that is not supported by Snow Leopard either.

  • Ongoing, very frustrating problems with Snow Leopard

I've really been struggling to get my machine to work optimally with Snow Leopard. I recently upgraded to 4GB RAM thinking my problem was insufficient memory, but several seemingly intractable problems are persisting.
    1) Still having font issues. I am apparently missing a couple fonts, but cannot figure out which ones. The font that Apple uses during the installation of software is bitmapped, as are several fonts in my widgets (Stocks, for example). I've tried manually going through one by one in Font Book, but still can't get the right set, apparently.
    2) Firefox and Safari are now hanging like crazy on certain websites, and web browsing is generally sluggish. I recently upgraded by broadband to 6.0mps, so it's not the connection that's the problem. Some sites will not even load, and others are painfully slow.
    3) General system sluggishness. I have tried cleaning the cache with Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, I've tried repairing permissions. Performance is still slow relative to Leopard -- despite my RAM upgrade. For example, it takes forever for the widgets to load. They used to be lighting fast in Leopard.
    HELP!

Here is a solution to having a sluggish internet experience that has worked for some.
    1. Go Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    2. Move the the SystemConfiguration folder to your desktop:
    3. Reboot
The folder moved should be recreated upon reboot. You may have to reconnect to your wireless network if applicable. And, you may need to go System Preferences > Sharing and re-enter your computer's name. Check what name is given in sharing before following the instructions. If problems develop, then your can move the original folder back where they it started—overwriting anything recreated.
    3) General system sluggishness. I have tried cleaning the cache with Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, I've tried repairing permissions. Performance is still slow relative to Leopard -- despite my RAM upgrade. For example, it takes forever >for the widgets to load. They used to be lighting fast in Leopard.
There are a variety of possible fixes for general slowness, in addition, to maintenance that is not performed automatically in Sno. Here are some nonmaintenance-related possibilities:
    1. If you are running iAntivirus, then uninstall it.
    2. Look in Library > StartupItems and in System > Library > StartupItems. Move whatever you find in them to the desktop to see if your problem is resolved. You can move whatever you want back one at a time to test which, if any, is your problem.
    3. I Go > System > Library > LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist and delete this file. I caution you here that all possible solutions one tries are at his or her own risk.
You'll lose all system sounds in Finder with this possible fix, but restoring the plist and stopping then starting the service seems to put all back in order.
    4.
    1. Create a new user
    2. Test apps to see that they work with no crashing.
    3. Drag your data (not your whole home folder) into their proper places in your new user home folder
    4. Re-enter your app preferences if you are going to keep using the new user.
    5. If you want to use the old user name, then delete the old account; recreate it; and move everything back to the original locations.
    6. You will need to fix the permissions, app settings, etc.
    5. Go back to 10.6.

  • Cricket UM185C Broadband Modem and Snow Leopard 10.6.x

Cricket has (fraudulently in my opinion) jettisoned support for the UM185C USB Broadband modem and Snow Leopard after very little time. I only paid for the UM185C less than 6 months ago and here I am with wasted money and a service I've paid for that is useless.
Anyway, I saw here where intrepid forum users where able to get the Cricket A600 USB Broadband Modem and Snow Leopard to work together after a series of terminal hacks, etc.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2142240&start=15&tstart=0
Is there any hope for making the UM185C work or should I simply discontinue service with Cricket and report them to the BBB for fraud and leave well enough alone.
I think the fact that there's no mention of the UM185C in these forums tells me that most Mac users are ditching Cricket for broadband and I can't blame them. What an unethical company they are. By the way, want to have some fun? Try downloading the "mac" version of the driver from the Cricket site for the UM185C; it's an .exe file for Windows.

    Hi Cowicide Moo,
My name is Ryan and I work in partnership with Cricket Wireless. We are sorry to hear about any confusion you may have encountered regarding the types of software supported by our various selections of broadband devices. On our website, we provide a clear list of modems and support software for customers to be able to determine the correct device to purchase for their computer.
    http://www.mycricket.com/support/faq/What-computers-and-operating-softwareandnbs pare-the-Cricket-Broadband-modems-compatible-with
As you'll see, the UM185C is supported by Mac OS X Leopard (10.5+) and earlier, but does not currently support Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6+) 32-bit. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
    Best,
    Ryan on behalf of Cricket

  • Facebook video chat on Macbook with Snow Leopard-Experience???

I have a Macbook with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Safari for browser.
I'm looking for users of the same who have used or tried to use Facebook video chat and would love to know if it was a good experience or were there any problems and if so what were the nature of those problems?
    Thanks,
    Janie

No Sir, I am not having problems with FaceBook and this Granny isn't taking a survey or poll.  I gave all the information I did so that I could get the proper "help".  I am not planning to upgrade to Lion and thus cannot have iCloud.  I have moved my mail from MobileMe to iCloud but I am not sure that I will be able to use my iChat once MobileMe ends on June 30 and I am looking at alternatives to staying in touch wit my children and grandchildren.  I am limited in knowledge but I do know that some apps from FaceBook arent's so good.  I want to be sure that I don't download anything that would be incompatible with my Mac and my version/browser, etc.  Just trying to avoid problems and keep my Mac in good working order.  I thought there might be somebody out there that would know the answer to my question.

I have just migrated a mobile me account over to icloud on a brand new MBP, my other machines all run snow leopard so I want to set the email up on these computers as well, I have followed Roger Wilmut settings for using Icloud email with Snow Leopard but I get "The IMAP server “imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user “xxxxxxxxxxx”. Can anybody help me as I have tried with 2 different macs and get the same error on both?

Ok this happened to me I migrated over my mobileme accounts to icloud on my new MBP easy, but when I went to my older machines running Snow Leopard my emails wouldn't work (password errors). The solution was to change the password on my account as Apple's new rule says that passwords need to be a least 8 characters long etc, once I change the password and re-entered my email account details my email worked straight away. Use this link to check your email settings are correct http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html

  • HP 1312nfi Multi-funtion printer & brand new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I just got my Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard May 2010. I can only print and fax with my 1 year old HP 1312nfi color laserjet multi-function printer. I cannot SCAN at all. I tried loading the software that came with the printer but it wouldn't install the 'Print Director' as I had on my old iMac (with Leopard). Then I went to HP and it said not to install the software that came with the HP printer because Snow Leopard has it all. I read that there are 3 ways to scan from my computer which none of them work. I brought up the printer then clicked printer setup and when I try to bring up the 'print utility' from the last tab, it won't open anything. Where is the printer utility now? Why can't I scan? There has to be a way. HELP please?

Found the answer on the HP site. It's the original software that works with this printer OS X 10.6!!

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    That's it really.

  • I have a copy of Windows 7, and I am trying to bring up Boot Camp on my MacBook with Snow Leopard.

I have a copy of Windows 7, and I am trying to bring up Boot Camp on my MacBook with Snow Leopard. But my Snow Leopard install disk is too old for Windows 7, so attempted Boot Camp install of drivers fails.
I have hand-installed the NVidia graphics driver, and I have keyboard, minimal trackpad, and hardwire to internet all working. So the WIndows machine is usable. But I am hurting for wi-fi, better trackpad, and whatever else is delivered by Boot Camp. I can't use any of the Boot Camp upgrades because I do not have XP or Vista.

    Dear Nathan,
Many thanks. To the best of my memory, that is how I got where I am today. Initially I had one failed setup, then discovered compatibility mode and ran using it.  The result was not an obvious failure, but something was not there because not only were some drivers missing (wi-fi, trackpad, ...) but (much to my disappointment) the 3.1 update would not run. It complained that 3.0 wasn't there. If I hardwired to my home network, the machine would do almost everything I wanted, but the graphics were slow and clumsy. That is when I hunted around for the NVidia driver and downloaded it from NVidia. And that is where I stand now.
My son found this link http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/01/15/using-boot-camp-to-install-windows-7-on-you r-mac-the-complete-walkthrough/
which has instructions claiming to do the install straight to Win 7 without using compatibility mode.
Given that my clumsy efforts to patch things up have probably necessitated a Win 7 deinstall and reinstall to test either your plan or the one my son found, I am inclined to sit tight for a couple of days to see  how much I can learn.
I appreciate your interest in  this problem, and if you are up for reading the process at the link my son found and commenting, I would be grateful.
In any case, many thanks, Paul
